Reversing Osteoporosis - With A Pill: FIU Scientists Pinpoint A New Method To Help Bone-Producing Cells Make More Bone February 2, 2023 Share Reversing Osteoporosis could one day be as easy as taking a pill. A team of FIU Drug Development Scientists found a possible new way to counteract the effects of the disease that turns bones into honeycomb-like structures — so fragile even a cough can cause a fracture or break. The discovery, recently published in Communications Biology, is the first step toward cheaper, effective, easy-to-take treatments for Osteoporosis and other diseases associated with bone loss. Currently available drugs only stop bone loss and require expensive daily injections. Researchers from FIU’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine — along with a collaborative team from the National Center For Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), part of the National Institutes Of Health (NIH) and the University Of Arkansas For Medical Sciences — identified a method that can be taken orally and helps bone-producing cells make more bone. “Our experiments in the lab showed small molecule activators delivered orally improve bone density, an exciting discovery that could lead to a new treatment for Osteoporosis,” said study Author Alexander Agoulnik, FIU Professor and Interim Chair Of The Department Of Human And Molecular Genetics. Bones are essentially always under renovation. Cells break down and reform bone around the clock. Bone-making cells build bone tissue, while bone-eating ones reabsorb it to keep bones from getting too big or bulky. It’s a delicate dance and it goes awry during Osteoporosis when bone-making cells slow down and bone-eating cells keep at a steady pace. To help bone-producing cells keep up, the researchers focused on a specific target. A hormone receptor —Relaxin Family Peptide Receptor 2 (RXFP2), known to play a role in the formation of reproductive organs. “When we first screened patients with Cryptorchidism, or Undescended Testes, we found in some of them this receptor was mutated,” Agoulnik said. “Then, colleagues from the University Of Padova, Italy, surprisingly discovered that a significant portion of these men also happened to have Osteoporosis.” The team suspected the receptor also had something to do with bone development. Further research revealed it did. The team first had to pinpoint the right chemical compound to activate the receptor. The NCATS Team used robots to screen for small molecules, among more than 80,000 different compounds. Chemists then tested hundreds more variations until they found the right match. It was like a key fitting a lock. When they tested it on mouse models in the lab, they saw an improvement in bone density. “This opens up a new area of study to allow for clinical application to prevent or reverse Osteoporosis,” said Maria Esteban Lopez, who worked with Agoulnik on this research as an FIU Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. Candidate. “This was an exciting opportunity. I was able to work with phenomenal scientists across various institutions and see how the impact of our work could lead to meaningful therapeutic breakthroughs.” Researchers know a new treatment could be life-changing for millions of people and look forward to the next phase of research. “Without collaboration, we would never have found the link between our genes and bone development. The collaboration with NIH was crucial because they are the best in the field to look for the right compounds,” Agoulnik said. “The main ingredient for success in science is collaboration.” This research was supported by the National Institute Of Arthritis And Musculoskeletal And Skin Diseases (NIAMS) at the NIH. A Sacred Responsibility: Solution To The Shaimos Burial Problem By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil November 10, 2023 Share Sheimos, also spelled "Shaimos," is a fundamental concept in Judaism that pertains to the respectful disposal of sacred religious texts. The term "Sheimos" itself is derived from the Hebrew word "shem," which means "name," and it encompasses any text containing the name of G-d or other holy content. The proper handling and disposal of Sheimos materials are essential aspects of Jewish religious practice, emphasizing the reverence and sanctity attributed to written words and the divine name. For years, local cemeteries provided space for burying these holy objects. More recently, as more Jewish texts are being printed, the cemeteries are being less accommodating. First the excuse was COVID-19. Then they began charging per box, and now they want people to buy an entire grave to bury their few boxes, making it almost impossible for any individual to be able to properly care for Sheimos. Synagogues are begging people not to bring their Sheimos, as it becomes very costly to handle and as of late, not even possible to deal with. Many people are notorious for dropping off bags of Sheimos at their local synagogue and just leaving it to the synagogues to figure it out, creating a clergy nightmare. There's got to be some type of solution! The Significance Of Sheimos In Judaism, written materials that contain the name of G-d or other sacred content are considered holy. This includes Torah scrolls, prayer books, and any other documents or materials that feature divine names or verses from the Torah. The underlying principle is that the name of G-d is sacred and must be treated with the utmost respect. This belief is deeply rooted in the second of the Ten Commandments, which commands the people not to take the name of the Lord in vain (Exodus 20:7). Types Of Sheimos Sheimos materials encompass a wide range of items, each of which must be handled and disposed of with care and reverence: 1. Torah Scrolls: The most sacred of all Sheimos, Torah Scrolls are meticulously written copies of the first five books of the Bible. When a Torah Scroll becomes damaged or is no longer usable, it must be buried in a special ceremony. 2. Prayer Books: Prayer Books, or Siddurim, contain sacred prayers and verses from the Torah. When they become worn out or damaged, they are also disposed of through burial. 3. Tefillin and Mezuzahs: Tefillin are small black leather boxes containing passages from the Torah that are worn during morning prayers. Mezuzahs are parchment scrolls inscribed with specific biblical verses placed on the doorposts of Jewish homes. When these items are no longer serviceable, they are buried. 4. Other Sacred Materials: Shaimos materials can also include any paper, books, or objects containing G-d's name or verses from the Torah. This encompasses a wide array of items, from synagogue signage to religious pamphlets. Disposal Of Sheimos Periodically, the contents of the Genizah are collected and buried in a Jewish cemetery or other designated Shaimos burial site. A special ceremony accompanies the burial, demonstrating respect for the sacred content being interred. The concept of Sheimos underscores the profound respect and veneration that Judaism places on the written word and the name of G-d. It serves as a reminder of the importance of treating sacred materials with the utmost care and reverence throughout their lifecycle, from their creation to their eventual disposal. The practice of Sheimos preservation and burial reflects the enduring commitment of Jewish tradition to uphold the sanctity of the divine name and the written word. Chabad Chayil Solution Although Sheimos needs to be buried, unlike a person, it does not need to be buried in a cemetery. Perhaps Synagogues and Jewish Schools being built or undergoing expansion can designate a space under their building to bury these holy objects. This will solve the Sheimos problem while building their structure on a holy foundation! Before we poured concrete for the foundation of the new Chabad Chayil Educational Center in Highland Lakes, we accepted Shaimos from over 30 Shuls and schools, burying several thousand books. During the most recent pour there were several truckloads of old Jewish books that were brought to the burial during the foundation pour. Today, Dania Beach continued to escalate its economic importance when Spirit Airlines opened the first phase of their global world headquarters, operations center, and simulation training facility in the city. “Dania Beach proudly welcomes Spirit and their global team to Broward’s first city. Protect Our Kids From AI: We Must Stop Predators From Using AI to Exploit Children By Teresa Huizar February 23, 2024 Share Sexual predators are using a new tool to exploit children - AI image generators. Users on a dark-web forum shared 3,000 AI-generated images of child sexual abuse in one month, according to the Internet Watch Foundation. Current child sexual abuse laws are outdated. They don't account for the dangers AI and emerging technologies pose. Lawmakers must act fast to put legal protections in place. The national CyberTipline -- a reporting system for suspected online child exploitation -- received a staggering 32 million reports in 2022, up from 21 million two years prior. That figure is sure to grow with the rise of AI. AI platforms are "trained" on existing visual material. Sources used to create images may include real children's faces taken from social media, or photographs of real-life exploitation. Advanced AI-generated images are virtually indistinguishable from unaltered photographs. Investigators have found new images of old victims, images of "de-aged" celebrities depicted as children in abuse scenarios, and "nudified" images taken from otherwise benign photos of clothed children. Much of this technology is downloadable, so offenders can generate images off-line without fear of discovery. Using AI to create pictures of child sex abuse is not a victimless crime. Behind every AI image, there are real children. And studies show that a majority of those who possess child sex abuse material also commit hands-on abuse. Adults can also use platforms like ChatGPT to better lure children. Criminals have long used fake online identities to meet young people in games or on social media, gain their trust and manipulate them into sending explicit images, then "sextort" them for money, more pictures, or physical acts. ChatGPT makes it shockingly easy to masquerade as a child or teen with youthful language. President Biden recently signed an executive order geared at managing the risks of AI. But we need help from lawmakers. We need to update the federal definition of child sexual abuse material to include AI-generated depictions. As the law stands, prosecutors must show harm to an actual child. A defense team could claim that AI material is not depicting a real child, even though AI images often pull from material that victimizes real children. We must adopt policies requiring tech companies to monitor and report exploitative material. Only three companies were responsible for 98% of all CyberTips in 2020 and 2021: Facebook, Google, and Snapchat. Many state laws identify "mandatory reporters," or professionals who are legally required to report suspected abuse. Employees of social media and tech companies ought to have mandated reporting responsibilities. We need to rethink how we use end-to-end encryption, in which only the sender and receiver can access a message or file. While it has valid applications, end-to-end encryption can help people store and share child abuse images. To illustrate how many abusers go undetected, consider that out of the 29 million tips the CyberTipline received in 2021, just 160 came from Apple, which maintains end-to-end encryption for iMessages and iCloud. Even if law enforcement has a warrant to access a perpetrator's files, a tech company with end-to-end encryption can claim that it can't help. Surely an industry built on innovation is capable of developing solutions to protect our children. AI and social media are evolving every day. If lawmakers act now, we can prevent wide-scale harm to kids. Hallandale’s Vapor Shark evolves into Elevate Smoke Shop PROFILES February 4, 2022 Share Vapor Shark in Hallandale Beach, opened nine years ago as a vaporizer store selling electronic cigarettes. Two years ago, it began evolving into a full-service smoke shop, doing business as Elevate Smoke Shop, selling all kinds of smoking products, including tobacco. “We have the credibility and trust from consumers after our many years in the market delivering high-quality products and service,” says proprietor Geo Tejada. “We specialize in what we do and focus on excellent products, product knowledge, and customer service. “We know all of the alternatives to smoking cigarettes, so we can help our customers to transition to a product that is more beneficial to their smoking experience.” Also, as the laws governing smoking have changed, placing an online order for smoking products has become more complicated. “Lawmakers don’t want these products to end up in the hands of minors,” Tejada says. “The new laws force you to come to a reputable store, where the salesperson can check your identification, to make sure these products and devices are being sold only to responsible adults. “At Vapor Shark, we follow the rules for what is being done ethically and correctly in the marketplace. A lot of mom-and-pop smoke shops will help anybody who walks in. We don’t do that.” Today, the 1,500 sq. ft. establishment is a smoker’s version of the proverbial “kid in a candy store,” filled with displays for all kinds of tobacco and alternative products. Here is an overview: E-cigarettes Electronic cigarettes were developed as an alternative to smoking tobacco. They eliminate the tars and other byproducts found in tobacco smoke, and in this sense, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “E-cigarettes have the potential to benefit adult smokers who are not pregnant, if used as a complete substitute for regular cigarettes and other smoked tobacco products.” E-cigarettes are vapor products. They consist of a battery-powered heating element and a tank holding a liquid “juice.” When heated, the juice forms an aerosol that the user inhales. The juice contains nicotine, the primary addictive ingredient in tobacco. Other ingredients in the vapor may include propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin and a flavoring agent. “The level of nicotine in the juice ranges from 0 to 50 percent,” Tejada says. “This helps smokers switch from smoking cigarettes to vaping and gradually reduce their nicotine consumption.” Vapor Shark offers a wide variety of vaping devices and juices. Fumes Fumes are disposable electronic cigarette devices. They come with a built-in battery, coils and filters that don’t need changing and a supply of flavored e-juice. “You buy it for the flavor, use it for 1,000 to 2,500 puffs, then dispose of it and buy a different flavor,” Tejada says. Some of Vapor Shark’s most popular flavors are cool mint, grape, mango, melon ice, piña colada, and strawberry banana. Also available is “Cuban tobacco” flavor, which doesn’t come from Cuba. “That would be illegal,” Tejada emphasizes. Hookahs A hookah (water pipe) is a glass or plastic vase topped with a bowl where tobacco or some other substance, called shisha, is burned. The smoke passes through water in the vase and then into a hose on which the smoker sucks. Shisha may be a combination of flavored tobacco with a molasses base, or some tobacco-free herbal preparation, plus charcoal to create the combustion, Tejada explains. Shisha flavors span a broad range, including fruit, mint, spice, vegetable combinations and different kinds of tobacco with varying strengths of nicotine (or none at all). Vapor Shark sells a complete line of hookahs and supplies, including the pipes themselves in a variety of sizes, shapes and a vast array of smoking options. Pipes Unless you’re watching a Sherlock Holmes movie, you may not see many old-style pipes these days, but they’re still around. Vapor Shark sells an assortment of wooden and glass pipes. They come in different sizes and shapes. You pack the bowl with tobacco and light it directly with a match or lighter. The shop also sells multiple flavors and strains of pipe tobacco. These pipes also can be used to smoke hemp flowers. Roll-your-own cigarettes The paper on commercially manufactured cigarettes may contain many impurities that affect the flavor of the product.
