  • Pedaling For a Purpose: Son Honors The Memory of His Mother

Pedaling For a Purpose: Son Honors The Memory of His Mother February 8, 2024 Share Under the early morning sun, Rob Adams pedaled his bike along a familiar path heading toward Treetops Park in Davie. The rhythmic whirl of the wheels beneath him provided a comforting soundtrack. But even in this meditative state, his thoughts were focused elsewhere – on his mother, Jean Adams, who left this world too soon, passing away from Throat Cancer in 2011. As he rode, memories of her flooded his mind. “I think a lot about her time working in real estate and living in South Florida. Together we watched the buildup of the county she was so heavily involved in,” said Adams. “She would be stunned by the amount of growth today.” Bicycling quickly became Adams’ solace, a way to connect with the memories of his mother, while also giving him the drive to prioritize his physical health. He pushed himself to go further, conquering every turn or extra mile just as Jean had faced challenges in her own life. “I look back at the toughness and determination my mom applied to her fight against cancer with awe. First tackling Breast Cancer and then the treatment for Throat Cancer. I tell my legs to ‘be quiet.’ This ride is nothing compared to that,” he said. One day, as Adams headed toward the airport in Miami Gardens, he discovered the roadways were flooded with thousands of bicyclists. Intrigued, he went home to research the event and discovered the bicyclists were participating in Dolphins Challenge Cancer (DCC), a year-round Cancer Initiative that culminates in their signature ride, run and walk fundraising event in support of Innovative Cancer Research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. DCC is a signature Miami Dolphins’ initiative and the leading fundraising event in the NFL. Fourteen years in, the DCC has raised more than $64 Million for Cancer Research through innovative science, leading-edge technology and personalized patient care. “I thought to myself ‘wow, what a cool way to take what I love doing, riding my bike, and to try to raise money in memory of my mom,’” said Adams. Nearly a decade later, Adams leads his company’s team in raising funds and awareness for Cancer Research through the DCC. As a captain of Florida Power & Light Company’s (FPL) team for the last five years and a participant for nine, he finds joy in sharing his mission with his coworkers, friends, family and community. “When you’re further along in your career like me, you start looking at how you’ll leave your legacy,” said Adams. “I’ve found great purpose in working with the Dolphins Challenge Cancer Event.” At work, Adams is no stranger to leadership. In the last 35 years with FPL, he’s held positions across the company from supervising power delivery field crews to running the systems that keep customers’ lights on. Today, he serves as a Senior Director of Power Delivery Technology. That leadership experience helped him lead his cycling team for DCC, which has raised nearly $1 Million in the last 11 years. “We believe that you don’t need to have cancer to fight cancer. Through the DCC's year-round initiative, we engage the South Florida community in the fight against a disease that impacts us all,” said Dolphins Challenge Cancer Executive Director Javier Sanchez. “It’s thanks to people like Rob Adams, FPL and the collective effort of all DCC participants that we are able to raise funds for innovative cancer research.” This year's DCC will take place February 24th at the Hard Rock Stadium. More than 80 riders and runners are gearing up to take part in the race as part of team FPL. “Too many of us have lost parents, relatives and friends to cancer,” said Adams. “Raising money for Cancer Research honors their memory and helps our community.” < Previous News Next News >

  • The Famed Gallaghers Steakhouse Of South Florida - Wildly Popular Boca Raton Location Exudes A Legacy Of Quality, Hospitality, And Old-World Charm | sun-times

The Famed Gallaghers Steakhouse Of South Florida - Wildly Popular Boca Raton Location Exudes A Legacy Of Quality, Hospitality, And Old-World Charm By Merilee Kern, MBA Jul 10, 2025 Gallaghers Steakhouse Has Long Been Synonymous With Culinary Excellence And Timeless Charm. With Its Roots Tracing Back To A Speakeasy On Manhattan’s 52nd Street During Prohibition, The Iconic Restaurant Has Evolved Into A Revered Dining Institution. Now, Its Boca Raton Location Carries On The Legacy, Blending Old-World Sophistication With The Breezy Elegance Of South Florida. Known For Its Meticulously Dry-Aged Steaks, Hickory Coal Grilling, And World-Class Hospitality, Gallaghers Stands Out In A Crowded Landscape Of Fine Dining Options. But, what truly sets Gallaghers apart isn’t just its history or menu—it’s the unwavering commitment to quality and authenticity at every turn. From maintaining an on-site meat locker for dry-aging to recreating the ambiance of early-century Palm Beach, Gallaghers Boca offers an experience that is as luxurious as it is inviting. To dive deeper into what makes this restaurant a must-visit South Florida fine dining spot, we spoke with the team behind Gallaghers to explore its unique offerings, historical ties, and dedication to delivering an exceptional dining experience. MK: What sets Gallaghers Steakhouse apart from other steakhouses in the Boca Raton, Florida area? A: Gallaghers stands out as one of the few remaining steakhouses that refuses to compromise on quality and genuine hospitality. For example, we maintain an on-site meat locker where we dry-age our beef—a meticulous and expensive process that ensures unmatched freshness and quality control. Unlike many steakhouses that buy pre-aged, pre-cut beef, we oversee every step of the process, including hiring professional butchers to cut the meat on-site. We also grill our steaks over hickory coals, requiring expertly trained cooks to ensure consistent temperatures and flavor—a rarity in an era where most competitors rely on broilers and flat-top stoves. Despite these added costs, we ensure our menu prices remain competitive. MK: How does Gallaghers Boca Raton reflect the legacy of the iconic New York location? A: The Boca Raton location embodies the essence of the original New York restaurant while incorporating site-specific elements. Like its Manhattan counterpart, Boca offers an authentic, old-world dining experience, complete with top-quality aged beef and impeccable service. However, we’ve added touches unique to South Florida, such as shaded outdoor seating and a more extensive selection of fresh Florida seafood dishes. MK: Can you explain the restaurant’s dry-aging process and its impact on the flavor of the steaks? A: Dry-aging and butchering on-site is what gives a steak that nutty flavor that so many enjoy. Our dry-aging process occurs in a glass-encased meat locker on-site, which is kept below 36 degrees Fahrenheit with controlled humidity. This prevents mold and bacteria growth while intensifying the beef's flavor and tenderness. At any given time, our meat locker can hold 2,800–3,800 pounds of beef. This traditional process, combined with our hickory coal grilling, ensures an unparalleled dining experience. Fresh meat is received in NYC and shipped to Boca and dry aged for 28-30 days. Because of that, the flavor is what is called “nutty flavor” as opposed to a “musty” flavor. MK: What are your top-selling seafood dishes? A: Our seafood selections rival our prime steaks in quality and popularity. Favorites include jumbo lump crab cakes, Hamachi crudo, shrimp and lobster dumplings, and fresh catch entrées like Dover sole, and salmon. Our lobster tail, particularly as part of a surf-and-turf pairing, is a perennial crowd-pleaser. MK: How does Gallaghers cater to guests with dietary preferences or restrictions? A: Our team is trained to customize dishes to accommodate dietary needs. Staff members are well-versed in the ingredients and preparation methods of every dish and are proactive in inquiring about dietary restrictions to ensure all guests enjoy their meal without compromise. MK: What role does the restaurant’s ambiance play in creating a memorable experience? A: The ambiance is integral to the Gallaghers experience. In Boca Raton, we’ve recreated the style of 1920s South Florida, with green leather banquettes, saddle leather accents, terrazzo flooring, stucco walls, Mahogony paneling and lofty pecky-cypress ceilings. The experience is further elevated by servers in jackets and ties, silver-plate silverware, coffee service and overall hospitality presented traditionally without, though being pretentious. Guests also dine surrounded by walls adorned with authentic photographs of Broadway stars, politicians, sports legends, and more—each with a connection to Gallaghers' storied history. We’ve earned a very good reputation of service here in South Florida. Many of our guests ask for our servers by name, so it has become like a club atmosphere in that sense. The music we play also makes people feel as if they’ve been transported to a place in time. MK: Can you share a bit about the history of Gallaghers Steakhouse? A: Gallaghers began in 1927 as a speakeasy on Manhattan’s 52nd Street, founded by Broadway showgirl Helen Gallagher and gambler Jack Solomon. After Prohibition, it evolved into a steakhouse frequented by Broadway stars, bootleggers, and politicians. Though it changed hands over the years, the restaurant has remained a bastion of mid-century charm and culinary excellence, with the current owner, Dean Poll, restoring it to its former glory. MK: What selection represents a personal favorite dish on the menu? A: Owner Dean Poll’s go-to order is a chopped wedge salad, rare sirloin steak, creamed spinach, Brussels sprouts, hashed browns, and cheesecake for dessert. MK: What should people know about Gallaghers that they might not? A: Many don’t realize the original Gallaghers in New York started as a speakeasy during Prohibition. Additionally, our walls are adorned with photographs of famous guests that have dined here throughout the years- spanning nearly a century, including actors, Broadway stars, athletes, and politicians. MK: What is Gallaghers’ target clientele? A: While our menu appeals to everyone, we often attract an affluent clientele who dine out regularly and appreciate exceptional quality and service. Not everyone knows about Gallaghers in its speakeasy days, but it’s really a fascinating story. When it was a speakeasy, it was owned by a chorus girl, actress and model named Evelyn Nesbit. She had a love affair with renowned architect Stanford White, who was murdered by her ex-husband Harry Thaw. When Thaw was released from jail, he came to her speakeasy—Club Evelyn—and made a huge scene, which is documented in a New York Times story, causing Evelyn to quit the business. Helen Gallagher and Jack Solomon had the food concession of that Speakeasy so, once Evelyn left, they took it over and called it “Gallaghers Steakhouse,” continuing to serve illegal liquor … listing it on the menu as “the other soup.” Today, there’s no secret that Gallaghers Steakhouse is more than just a dining destination—it’s a celebration of timeless traditions, unparalleled quality, and genuine hospitality. Whether visiting the Boca Raton location to savor a perfectly dry-aged steak; indulge in fresh premium seafood specialties; or soak in the old-world ambiance over a fine wine, martini or craft cocktail, every visit offers a taste of history and refinement. By honoring its New York roots while embracing the spirit of South Florida, Gallaghers continues to set the gold standard for fine dining. For those seeking an unforgettable experience where culinary artistry meets warm, welcoming service, this iteration of Gallaghers Steakhouse is truly in a league of its own. Previous Next

  • Origin Of Oceans Makes Waves Across Four Cities With Handcrafted, Sustainable Swimwear By Kathleen Bily | sun-times

Origin Of Oceans Makes Waves Across Four Cities With Handcrafted, Sustainable Swimwear By Kathleen Bily Aventura Digest Aug 12, 2025 As Runways Lit Up In Austin, Miami, Ibiza, And New York City This Season, One Swimwear Brand Stood Out For More Than Its Radiant Colors And Luxe Silhouettes. Origin Of Oceans, The Brainchild Of Designer Kathleen Bily, Delivered A Runway-To-Retail Moment Defined By Purpose, Craftsmanship, And Beauty Inspired By The Earth Itself. This year’s international showcase marks the fourth consecutive year Bily has brought her handmade, sustainable creations to the runway, but 2025 has become something of a turning point. “From the desert to the sea, every collection is a love letter to the natural world,” Kathleen explains. “Everything I design has intention... from the fabrics we choose to the beading that tells a story.” Kathleen started her Runway Tour for 2025 in May showcasing her collection at Austin Fashion Week. Two weeks later she was in Miami for Miami Swim Week, followed by Ibiza Swim Week in June. The finale of the four shows, New York Swim Week happened on July 26th where Kathleen presented 13 looks to a sold out New York Swim Week Show founded by Evita Scoccia. 22 other designers presented that day as well, with Origin of Oceans being one of the 22. Sustainability Meets Storytelling What sets Origin of Oceans apart isn’t just aesthetic even though the ethereal beadwork and flowing silhouettes leave a lasting impression but it’s the purpose behind every stitch. Each garment is handmade, hand-beaded, and hand-embroidered, using intricate techniques and waterproof embellishments that can withstand fresh or saltwater. “Every piece is a keepsake,” says Kathleen. “They’re wearable memories that make you feel confident, powerful, and connected to the environment.” Her collections are released in small batches, ensuring exclusivity while minimizing waste. Once a piece is sold out, it’s rarely reproduced. From dawn-inspired pastels to bold midday brights and starlit dusk hues, Kathleen's work mimics the daily rhythm of natural environments. “I build each collection like a day in nature with gradations of color and emotion,” she shares. It’s a design philosophy rooted in her travels and her deep connection to the Earth’s landscapes. From Texas to the World Stage Kathleen, who splits her time between New York and Texas, is no stranger to the fashion world. With dual degrees in Fashion Design and Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin, she built a decade-plus career in New York designing for fashion powerhouses including Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, Kate Spade, and Tory Burch. “I started Origin of Oceans during COVID,” she explains. “It had been my dream for years to create a swimwear brand that felt luxurious but intentional. I’ve always been happiest near water, and I wanted to create something that reflected that joy.” That joy translates to every corner of her brand from the hand-sourced textiles to the way each design comes to life. “Seeing my pieces go down the runway is surreal,” she says. “It starts as a sketch, and then, suddenly, it’s a real garment that people wear and love. That feeling never gets old.” Where to Shop the Collection The latest Origin of Oceans runway collection is exclusively available now at: www.originofoceans.com , with pieces featured at recent swim weeks already live and ready for purchase. Since all items are handmade in limited quantities, shoppers are encouraged to act quickly before styles sell out. The Vision Behind the Brand Kathleen Bily’s long-term goals for Origin of Oceans go beyond beautiful swimwear. “The runway has become a place not just for showcasing fashion but for sharing our story, our mission, and our values,” she says. “We want to grow globally, connect with more creatives, and keep our commitment to craftsmanship and sustainability.” Origin of Oceans has already been tapped for international fashion weeks in Italy, Dubai, and France, giving the brand momentum to expand its reach and its purpose on a global scale. Final Word from the Designer When asked about her proudest moment, Kathleen reflects not on accolades but on growth. “I’m proud every time I take a risk that pays off. Every time someone wears my design and feels powerful. That’s the magic.” With each bead, each thread, and each intentional design, Origin of Oceans is redefining what it means to create swimwear not just something you wear, but something you remember. And when you remember the moment you wore her garments and swimwear you also remember that beautiful place in the world you were in. The people you were with and moments you shared with those around you. That is the power of her brand. Moments, memories and remembering. Previous Next

7 Tricks To Ease Back-To-School Chaos With A Little Magic By Feature Impact Aug 20, 2026 Everyone Could Use A Little More Magic In Their Everyday Lives - But When It Comes To Back-To-School Season, "Manic" Often Feels Like The More Accurate Word. Between Shopping For Supplies, Coordinating The Family's Schedules And Trying To Make Sure Everyone Is Looking And Feeling Their Best, There's A Lot Going On This Time Of Year. While you may not be able to wave a wand and make all the stress disappear, you can use these tips and tricks - courtesy of the haircut magicians at Great Clips - to save time and add a touch of excitement to the back-to-school season. Start Routines Early Instead of waiting for the first day of school to change all your routines, guide your family into the time warp a little more gradually. Shift sleep and wake times a week or two ahead of time so the early wakeups won't come as such a shock to the system. Adapt meal schedules and other daily habits the same way. Before you know it, the spell will be complete and you'll be ready to roll with the regular school-day schedules. Create a Special Back-to-School Tradition Watching your kids' eyes light up is its own mini dose of magic that never gets old. Start a fun new tradition to brighten their first day or week. That could be a special breakfast, new outfit, porch photoshoot, surprise gift for them to discover in their backpacks or another creative idea personalized to your family. Get a Convenient and Affordable Haircut A haircut can help children and parents get into the back-to-school spirit. That's why Great Clips partnered with internet celebrity and magician Justin Flom, known for his mind-bending optical illusions, to help remind parents they don't need complicated tricks to make getting a back-to-school haircut a breeze. With the Great Clips app, parents can easily check in multiple family members at once, keep an eye on wait times and get notified when it's their turn for a haircut. No illusions, no sleight of hand - just convenient, affordable haircuts that feel like much needed relief for parents. "Our goal is to help families spend less time waiting and more time doing what matters during one of the busiest seasons of the year," said Traci Elder, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Great Clips, Inc. "The Great Clips app helps families save time by making haircuts fit more seamlessly into their busy schedules and at a great price, too." Plan Outfits Ahead of Time The morning rush often feels like the furthest thing from a fairytale. Take at least one groggy decision off your plate by choosing clothes the evening before - or even assembling a week's worth of outfits on Sunday and storing them in a special drawer that gives your child an instant portal to getting dressed. Personalize School Supplies From preferred colors to beloved characters, all kids have their favorites. Stock them up with pens, notebooks, lunchboxes and other supplies that match their current obsessions; that way, it's more exciting to use them at school and show their swag off to their friends. Refresh the Study Space Homework time might look like less of a wizard battle if your kids have a special place to do it. Add some whimsy to their study spaces by putting up string lights, letting them pick out a new piece of furniture or art, and making their environment cozy and comfortable. Set School Year Goals As a family, take some time to figure out what each of you wants to achieve this year - and make it fun. Amp up the magic here by writing down your goals; then, keep track of progress by filling up a goal jar with shiny stars, swirly marbles or fun charms. Throughout the school year, set up different "quests" for your family to accomplish.
