- Ain't Misbehavin': Don't Miss the Opportunity To Step Back in Time
Ain't Misbehavin': Don't Miss the Opportunity To Step Back in Time July 18, 2023 Share Ain't Misbehavin', presented by the City of Aventura, is set to take center stage at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center for two exciting showings on Saturday, January 27th, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. and at 8:00 p.m. This musical revue, winner of three Drama Desk Awards and three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, promises an unforgettable journey into the vibrant world of the Harlem Renaissance. The show pays homage to the black musicians who shaped the 1920’s and the 1930’s, a time of cultural awakening, artistic brilliance, and ethnic pride. Its title derives from the Iconic 1929 Fats Waller Song, "Ain't Misbehavin'" (composed by Waller, Harry Brooks, and Andy Razaf). During this era, Manhattan's renowned nightclubs such as the Cotton Club and the Savoy Ballroom became playgrounds for high society, while piano players filled the air of Lenox Avenue dives with the infectious rhythms of Swing. Ain't Misbehavin' captures the spirit of this transformative period, taking audiences on a journey of pleasure, playfulness, and lively entertainment. The musical, with a book by Murray Horwitz and Richard Maltby, Jr., features a rich selection of music from various composers and lyricists, all artfully arranged and orchestrated by Luther Henderson. Its five performers expertly bring to life a repertoire of rowdy, raunchy, and humorous songs that reflect the diverse moods and experiences of the time. Critics have showered Ain't Misbehavin' with praise, describing it as "deliciously entertaining" by the Chicago Tribute. The Chicago Sun Times hails the show as "fun and off-the-charts galvanic energy," emphasizing the pure joy it exudes. The Chicago Reader applauds the top-flight cast and band for capturing the score's ebullient energy and swinging stylishness. The Huffington Post describes the production as a boozy, after-hours party that welcomes all. Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, known for its commitment to delivering exceptional artistic experiences, provides the perfect setting for Ain't Misbehavin'.
