- Where Have All Of The Beach Chairs Gone In Hallandale?
Where Have All Of The Beach Chairs Gone In Hallandale? By Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper August 15, 2024 Share I know it has been a while since this issue arose about storing and presetting beach chairs on our beach. As promised, I worked hard over the past months to make sure this was resolved. I have been in contact with multiple boards and their members to discuss how a fair and equitable plan could be put in place. The goal was to provide the ability for condominiums to provide courtesy chair service to their owners as they have without being forced to use a set contractor. Many beachfront condominiums have been providing this service for years. The issue is the beach is Public and Services outside of City Services are only permitted through a licensing agreement. This allows everyone, residents, and visitors alike, the use of our beach. From day one, I was opposed to an exclusive vendor contract. Before summer break, I worked with our commission and passed a 3-2 vote to prevent an exclusive contract. This was a step forward that would allow the building to provide a service just like they have been. We could not, however, reach an agreement about what an ordinance or program would look like. I presented at that initial meeting a list of suggested recommendations which I compiled information from other cities. After that meeting the city worked with the Beach Club and their attorney to produce an agreed upon pilot. A pilot program was set up with a sample agreement to allow storage and presets. First, the proposal suggested a $1,000 Filing Fee and $30 Per Unit Charge. This was not acceptable to me and other commissioners. Before summer break, I wanted to make sure the service which was stopped during beach renourishment was made available. Before the break, I asked that we address the Fee Structure at our Budget hearing in June. I suggested a Flat Registration Fee but that did not pass. I then suggested a Flat Fee and a Per Chair Fee. That still did not pass. There was a stalemate. So, before summer break the City Manager provided the ability for buildings to apply for use with no fee attached. The goal was to take a few weeks until we could resolve the issue and establish an ordinance. The commission discussed the Beach Chair Agreement at our June 3rd Regular Meeting. At that meeting there was once again a debate. One motion was to do an Application Fee for $1,000 and a $30 Per Unit Fee. That failed. Then there was a debate to reduce it to $25 Per Unit. That went nowhere. I made a motion for the Flat Fee with a $5 Per Chair Fee. Vice Mayor Lima Taub raised the issue about condominiums that do not want to store but simply place chairs on demand. I amended my motion to be a $1,000 Application Fee and a $5 Per Chair for those buildings that want to store and present a $500 Fee for condominiums that want to simply do on demand courtesy chairs. That motion did pass 3-2. So, we finally have a path forward. While many asked why we are not simply letting everyone do it free of charge, that would create a huge issue. Our ordinance simply does not allow this service without an agreement. Executing these agreements and monitoring them will utilize staff time which equates to Taxpayer Costs. The beach is a Public and a City Asset. We need to adopt laws and regulations fairly and equitably. This resolution is just that. It allows our beachfront condominiums to be able to utilize the Public Beach Park in their backyard and not be burdened by excessive fees. The next step will include updating the licensing agreement and our ordinance. The ordinance will take two readings after it is ready. Hopefully, the ordinance and final lease documents will be finalized and in place in early September. In the meantime, condominiums abutting the beach can utilize the beach for chair services. It also does not prevent a beach chair concession. In other good news, staff have informed us they have been out to bid and have received three proposers interested in offering services to run our South Beach Concessions. The vendors will also be able to provide chair services. Look for further updates. I encourage you to reach out and share your questions, concerns, and ideas to help make our city an even better place. As always, it is an honor to be your Mayor of Hallandale Beach. - Hollywood Native: Serves Aboard USS Essex
Hollywood Native: Serves Aboard USS Essex By Stephanie Fox, Navy Office of Community Outreach January 27, 2022 Share A Hollywood, Florida, native is serving aboard USS Essex, a U.S. Navy Wasp class amphibious assault ship. Airman Malyck Strachan serves as an aviation boatswain’s mate (fuel). Aviation boatswain's mate (fuel) sailors are responsible for preparing and fueling Navy planes prior to launch and after landing, as well as pumping fuel to all areas of the ship. “I enjoy the challenge of being an aviation boatswain’s mate (fuel),” said Strachan. “Jumping into the aviation boatswain’s mate (fuel) lifestyle right after leaving bootcamp can be overwhelming at first and the stress of the job can be intimidating, but over time it becomes a breeze.” Strachan joined the Navy to serve the country. “I initially joined the Navy for the benefits the military has to offer,” said Strachan. “As time went on, however, I realized I could gain so much more. I realized that I had gained a second family, I had gained maturity and I had gained discipline.” According to Strachan, the values required to succeed in the military are similar to those found in Hollywood. "A phrase that helped me during tough times is, ‘If they can do it then so can you,’" said Strachan. “When all of your peers seem to be doing things that you think would be impossible for you to accomplish, think about that phrase and believe in yourself.” Homeported in San Diego, California, USS Essex is the second ship in the Wasp-class of multipurpose amphibious assault ships and the fifth ship named for Essex County, Massachusetts. Essex was a 1000-ton ironclad river gunboat of the U.S. Army and later U.S. Navy during the American Civil War. According to Navy officials, amphibious assault ships are designed to deliver U.S. Marines and their equipment where they are needed to support a variety of missions ranging from amphibious assaults to humanitarian relief efforts. Designed to be versatile, the ship has the option of simultaneously using helicopters, Harrier jets, and Landing Craft Air Cushioned, as well as conventional landing craft and assault vehicles in various combinations. Serving in the Navy means Strachan is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy. “The Navy contributes to national defense by intimidating those who do harm to the innocent,” said Strachan. “We show them that we are not ones to stand by idly in the face of injustice. Wherever the fight is, expect the Navy to be there.” There are many opportunities for sailors to earn recognition in their command, community and careers while serving in the Navy. "My proudest Navy accomplishment so far is completing a full deployment in my first year as an active duty sailor," said Strachan. “I look forward to many more deployments and much greater accomplishments in the future.” As a member of the U.S. Navy, Strachan, as well as other sailors, know they are a part of a service tradition providing unforgettable experiences through leadership development, world affairs and humanitarian assistance. Their efforts will have a lasting effect around the globe and for generations of sailors who will follow. "To me, serving in the Navy means that I have overcome hardships that life has thrown at me and that I can continue to do so," added Strachan. “As long as I believe and trust in myself and my Navy family, we can do anything.” < Previous News Next News >

- Navigate Chronic Illness Adversities: Organ Transplant Recipient Details Ways to Live a Joyful Life Amid Long-Term Adversity
Navigate Chronic Illness Adversities: Organ Transplant Recipient Details Ways to Live a Joyful Life Amid Long-Term Adversity October 18, 2023 Share Navigating chronic illness can present more than its fair share of challenges, but with the right strategies and mindset, it is possible to lead a fulfilling and rewarding life. It is expected and perfectly okay to have difficult moments and turbulent emotions throughout sustained periods of adversity. Finding joy doesn't mean ignoring the challenges that inevitably present but rather finding ways to thrive despite them. It means being patient with yourself, and remembering that even small, singular steps can ultimately lead to significant improvements in your overall well-being and joy in life. According to two-time Kidney transplant recipient (who has lived with Kidney Disease for one-third of his life) Gregory S. Works, author of “Triumph: Life on the Other Side of Trials, Transplants and Transformation,” here are some tactical ways to achieve that: Acceptance Accepting your condition is the first step towards effectively managing it. Acknowledge that your life might be different from what you initially imagined, but there are still many possibilities for happiness and fulfillment. Build A Support Network Surround yourself with understanding and caring individuals – family, friends, or support groups – who can provide emotional support and practical assistance when needed. Educate Yourself Learn as much as you can about your condition from reliable sources. Understanding your illness empowers you to make informed decisions about your treatment and lifestyle choices. Set Realistic Goals Adjust your goals to align with your current capabilities. Celebrate every achievement, no matter how small, as each step counts towards progress. Manage Stress And Practice Self-Care Chronic illness can be emotionally taxing. Practice techniques that experts have proven to reduce stress such as mindfulness, meditation, Yoga, deep breathing or prayer to improve your overall Mental Well-Being. It’s also helpful to engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation, such as hobbies, exercise, spending time in nature or reading. Advocate For Yourself Be an active participant in your healthcare journey. Communicate openly with your healthcare providers, ask questions, and express your concerns to ensure you receive the best possible care. Adapt And Modify With Positive Routines Be flexible in adapting to your changing needs. Modify your daily routines, work arrangements, or social activities to accommodate your health requirements. Establish a daily routine that includes positive habits and activities. Structure can provide a sense of stability and control, even during challenging times. Celebrate Small Victories Recognize and appreciate the small victories and progress you make each day. Finding joy in small moments can bring immense satisfaction. Find Meaning And Purpose Find activities that give you a sense of purpose and joy. Pursue hobbies, volunteering, or creative outlets that bring fulfillment and a sense of accomplishment. Limit Negative Influences Cultivate a positive mindset and focus on the aspects of life that bring joy and happiness. Surround yourself with positive influences and try to let go of negativity. Minimize exposure to negative news, social media, or toxic relationships that may contribute to feelings of stress and sadness. Surround yourself with positive and uplifting content and people. Practice Gratitude Appreciate the things you still have and the experiences you can enjoy. Gratitude can shift your focus from what you lack to what you have. Stay Connected Even if your condition limits your physical abilities, technology allows for connections. Maintain social relationships through phone calls, video chats, or social media. Mindfulness And Presence Practice being present in the moment and cultivate mindfulness. Engage fully in the activities you enjoy, even if they are simple. Mindfulness can help you appreciate the small joys that may often go unnoticed. Focus On What You Can Control While some aspects of your life may be beyond your control, focus on the things you can influence. Concentrate your energy on taking positive actions rather than dwelling on what you cannot change. Cultivate Resilience Build resilience by reframing challenges as opportunities for growth. Learn from difficult experiences and use them to become stronger and more resilient. Embrace Imperfection Accept that life is imperfect, and setbacks are a natural part of the journey. Be kind to yourself and avoid self-criticism when facing challenges. Engage In Acts of Kindness Helping others and performing acts of kindness can be a source of joy and fulfillment. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference, both for others and yourself. Practice Humor Humor can be a powerful tool to cope with adversity. Find moments of laughter and joy, even in difficult situations. Visualize A Bright Future Allow yourself to envision a better future, filled with joy and happiness. Visualization can help create a positive outlook and motivate you to work towards your dreams. Be Patient With Yourself Living with a chronic illness can be frustrating. Remember to be patient with yourself and treat yourself with the same compassion you would show to others. “Challenges are inevitable, but the decisions we make—whether to face them or flee—can profoundly impact our ability to overcome or be overtaken by trials, pain, and suffering in our lives," Works says. Everyone’s journey with chronic illness is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. It's crucial to find a personalized approach that suits your needs and helps you live a fulfilling life despite the challenges you face. About the Expert Gregory S. Works is a two-time Kidney transplant recipient who has lived with Kidney Disease for one-third of his life. As an author, Gregory counsels others on this disease, providing advice on how to approach getting a transplant, dietary considerations, managing life during COVID, post-transplant living, and how faith can be the cornerstone of addressing this challenge.
