AAA Warns: The “100 Deadliest Days” Have Begun - Eight People Are Killed Each Summer Day In Crashes Involving A Teen Driver South Florida Sun Times Jun 11, 2025 The Stretch Between Memorial Day And Labor Day Is Known As The 100 Deadliest Days For Teen Drivers—A Period When Crashes Involving Teen Drivers Spike, Leading To Tragic Consequences. As Teens Hit The Road With Newfound Freedom, Many Underestimate The Dangers Of Distraction, Speeding, And Risky Driving Behaviors. AAA’s review of crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows a 30% increase in deadly crashes involving teen drivers during summer compared to the rest of the year. On average, eight people lose their lives every day in a teen-related crash between Memorial Day and Labor Day. "During the summer, teen drivers are on the road more often, usually with friends, which increases the risk of distraction and dangerous driving habits,” said Rachel Wilson, Director of Driver Education for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Many feel invincible behind the wheel, underestimating the dangers of speeding, distractions, and not wearing a seatbelt. But crashes hit different when they happen to you —and by then, it’s too late." Key Risk Factors for Teen Drivers New teen drivers (ages 16-17) are nearly three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash compared to adults. The biggest contributing factors include: Distraction: Nearly six out of ten teen crashes involve some form of distraction. Teen passengers are the leading distraction, followed by cell phones and infotainment systems. Speeding: Almost 30% of fatal teen crashes involve excessive speed. Driving with teen passengers: Studies show that the risk of a fatal crash increases with each additional teen passenger (NHTSA). Failure to wear a seatbelt: Seatbelt use significantly reduces the likelihood of serious injury or death. "Teens are inexperienced behind the wheel, and that lack of experience combined with risky behaviors is a dangerous mix,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “More teens die in car crashes during summer than any other season. Parents must take an active role in coaching their teens and reinforcing safe driving habits.” AAA’s Advice for Parents AAA urges parents to take proactive steps to ensure their teens are driving safely: • Lead by example. Model good driving behavior by avoiding distractions, obeying speed limits, and always buckling up. • Provide at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice. Give teens experience driving in diverse conditions—nighttime, inclement weather, highways, and busy streets. • Teach defensive driving skills. Encourage teens to anticipate hazards, stay alert, and maintain a safe following distance. • Create a parent-teen driving agreement. Establish clear rules about when, where, and with whom your teen can drive. Clearly outline the consequences for breaking the rules and rewards for driving safe. AAA’s Driver Education Resources AAA offers educational tools to help teens develop safe driving habits: How to Drive Online: A self-paced 25-hour online course featuring interactive exercises, videos, and simulations. AAA Approved Driving School Network: Identifies high-quality driving schools that meet AAA’s standards. For more information, visit: www.AAA.com/Drive , Contact: DriverTraining2@acg.aaa.com . Or call: (888) 222-7108. “Crashes Hit Different’ This Summer The key risk factors for teen drivers also happen to be the four leading contributors to traffic injuries and fatalities for all drivers. On average, someone is killed in a car crash every 12 minutes on our nation’s roads, primarily due to four factors: impaired driving, distractions, not buckling up and speed. This is the focus of AAA’s new “Crashes Hit Different” campaign. The Auto Club Group is partnering with roadway safety organizations, community groups, and drivers themselves in an effort to end these senseless tragedies. About AAA - The Auto Club Group The Auto Club Group (ACG) is the second largest AAA club in North America with more than 13 million members across 14 U.S. states and two U.S. territories. ACG and its affiliates provide members with roadside assistance, insurance products, banking and financial services, travel offerings and more. - The Breast Cancer Journey to “HOPE!”
The Breast Cancer Journey to “HOPE!” By Robert B. Donoway, MD, FACS October 6, 2022 Share October begins a very busy time of year filled with meetings and my usual surgical schedule but also from the beginning to the end with Community Outreach Lectures on the advances we’ve made in Breast Cancer during the past year or so. It is aimed at showing the importance a single voice, whether a survivor or healthcare provider, can make in our community and that above all, there are exciting new discoveries being made each day, which gives a reason to be HOPEFUL. This Saturday I will participate in the Annual Hepburn Women’s Cancer Event in Hallandale Beach which I have done since it’s inception. It’s an all day fun event for Survivors, families and the Community alike to get together one on one with our local Oncologists and in my case I get to see many women, who as patients have become friends. October 2022 will represent the 38th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month which first started in 1985 to focus awareness on early detection and Breast Cancer Prevention; highlighting the important role of Mammography in early detection first proven by Dr. Philip Strax, a former Broward resident. During the mid 1980s and early 1990s less than 5% of the NCI budget was dedicated to Breast Cancer, its early detection and methods of prevention. Through the efforts of leading organizations, such as Estée Lauder, Avon, the Komen foundation and the American Cancer Society recruiting a “pink” army of thousands of survivors and their families the necessary attention to Breast Cancer finally became a matter for discussion at every major cancer center. We in Broward were no exception. As a recent transplant from New York’s Sloan Kettering in 1990 to the Memorial Regional Cancer Center (now the Memorial Cancer Institute) here in Hollywood/Hallandale Beach, I remember the great excitement that surrounded all of our early Breast Cancer events to support fundraising that went on long after October had passed. Funding from Komen and ACS resulted in our community having a strong investment in Community Outreach Programs and Mobile Mammography Units. As a Surgical Oncologist we also were among the first to adopt techniques of minimal Lymph Node sampling of Breast Cancer in 1993; which did not become popular for over 10 more years. There have been many such advances in our community that our residents have benefitted from. We had the first Breast MRI in 1995 and for many years women from all over South Florida came to be tested at Memorial, even from the University of Miami. Targeted Breast Irradiation, both internally and externally, has long been a staple among the options patients have been offered for over 22 years. And as support through community activism has grown and provided much necessary funding so too has the many Alliances with leading National Cancer Programs that has enabled patients to receive State-Of-The-Art Therapies, whether Chemotherapy, Immunotherapy, Radiation, CryoAblation or surgery, all without leaving their community. For over 32 years we have been truly able to make the best Cancer Care available anywhere, available to all within 5 miles of their home. During these 30+ years over 50,000 women and about 500 men with Breast Cancer have been treated in Broward County. Diagnostics, Treatment and Social support services that were all stretched to their limits during the Pandemic are at last returning with great vigor and with renewed vitality to their Pre-Pandemic levels. They say “it takes a village” and nowhere is it more apparent than in Cancer Care where the role every person and organization builds ever stronger the ties that bind us together as members of the human race, who can come together despite all, to build a healthier community, where one can find all the necessary supports in place to help everyone regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or sexual alignment. Myself and my staff at the Donoway Center are very proud of the role we have played in our community and want to thank all those who entrusted their and their families lives’ to us these past 32 years. It has always been our goal to ensure every patient receives the most advanced treatment while never forgetting the human touch of compassion that enables one to understand that HOPE is the Answer. Through our Donoway Center Foundation we are offering Hope to those with advanced cancers who are often written off and have presented our research at National meetings of the successful options many have available simply by living here and if you’d like to contribute and this is only the beginning, you can log onto: www.DonowayCenterfoundation.com We look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming Annual Women’s Breast Cancer Event at the Hepburn Center in Hallandale Beach on Saturday, October 8th, 2022 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Look on-line to see the events. We are a proud supporter of it since its earliest beginnings. Robert B. - Education is Failing America's Future By Forgetting its Past
Education is Failing America's Future By Forgetting its Past By Jamie Gass and Chris Sinacola January 31, 2024 Share In 2022, eighth grade test scores in civics and U.S. history hit record lows. The decline didn't start with pandemic school closings. But they made it worse and revealed its extent. Less than half of adults can name the three branches of the U.S. government. Another 25% can't name even one. And just over one-third of Americans can pass the U.S. citizenship test. These sad facts are a reminder that the future success of our nation is far from guaranteed. We must acknowledge the imperfections of our current system and work to reform them -- a challenging but hardly impossible task. For starters, history curricula should be based on the United States' founding documents: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Federalist Papers. Some states have prioritized reading primary sources and writing assignments so that students develop background knowledge, vocabulary, and the ability to advance evidence-based arguments. The 1993 Massachusetts Education Reform Act, for example, prioritized the study of U.S. history through primary documents in each grade and required passing a U.S. history exam for high school graduation. South Carolina, California, Alabama, Indiana, and New York have also previously adopted rigorous state standards for history and social science. In some cases, these reforms were repealed in favor of trendier classes in "social studies." But the principles underlying the 1993 Massachusetts law and others like it got the fundamental questions right. They are worthy of revival. All states should also require a passing mark on a civics test or the U.S. citizenship exam for a high-school diploma. Today, only eight states do so. If we're to truly become the educated society the Founders envisioned, we'll have to invest in better training for teachers as well. Most states have dropped even basic requirements for people entering the teaching profession, blaming a shortage of qualified labor. Finally, the institutes of higher learning that train teachers must convey the centrality of civics and history in a curriculum geared toward producing good citizens. Education is the responsibility of state and local actors. Rather than retaining the top-down approach that has led to our current failures, school systems should engage with parents to understand their educational priorities for their children. Expanded school-choice programs can provide the means for parents to go elsewhere when they are dissatisfied with available public education options. The importance of a nonpartisan, fact-based U.S. history and civics education cannot be overstated. Without one, students will not be able to take their place as informed and engaged citizens dedicated to preserving the legacy of America's Founders. We know how to provide that sort of education. We just need the will to make it happen. The future of our great country depends on it. Jamie Gass is Director for the Center for School Reform at Pioneer Institute, where Chris Sinacola is Director of Communications. They are co-editors of Restoring the City on a Hill: U.S. History and Civics in America's Schools. A longer version of this piece was originally published in the Miami Herald. - Post-Passover Pizzas Prepared With Panache At A Local Hallandale Restaurant | sun-times
Post-Passover Pizzas Prepared With Panache At A Local Hallandale Restaurant By Ira Liebowitz Apr 23, 2026 Pizzas Are Served Alongside Other Popular Dishes At Imaleh Grill, A Not-Yet-Famous Eatery In Hallandale Beach Offering Mediterranean-Style Fare. The restaurant opened in 2024 in a location long known for ice cream. The space once drew loyal customers for frozen treats popularized by New York entrepreneur Tom Carvel, whose soft-serve “custard” became a well-known rival to Dairy Queen. Now, in the present day, Imaleh Grill has taken on a different identity. It is just after midnight on a Thursday turning into Friday. An unusual hour, perhaps, to find a restaurant bustling with activity and a “clamoring clientele.” But following the conclusion of the eight-day Jewish holiday of Passover—during which observant tradition prohibits leavened bread—the demand for freshly made pizza returns almost immediately. Inside the back section of Imaleh Grill, a crowd of roughly 50 customers waits eagerly as pizzas are prepared five at a time and placed into a steel oven. The pace is relentless. Dough is continuously shaped, portioned, and placed on the counter, then quickly transformed into round bases ready for sauce and cheese. Next to him, the owner, Eric Huziza, moves with equal speed, spreading tomato sauce and cheese across each uncooked base as they arrive. These pizzas are prepared in accordance with dietary observance for the holiday transition, emphasizing simple, meatless preparations. Only two staff members handle the pizza station that night, yet their speed keeps the line moving without pause. Some customers order four or five pizzas at once, along with garlic rolls and other items. Despite the intensity of the rush, neither worker appears to stop for breaks or even a sip of water. At one point, Eric calls out, “Grab a water for me, please,” as the nonstop rhythm of preparation continues. By estimating the pace—about five pizzas every few minutes—it becomes clear how quickly the output adds up. Over the course of several hours, hundreds of pizzas are produced and served. If service begins around 9:00 p.m. and continues past midnight, it is reasonable to estimate that several hundred pizzas are prepared during the night, alongside additional dishes such as shawarma wraps made in the front section of the restaurant. In total, more than 200 customers—families, groups, and late-night diners—are served and satisfied as the post-holiday rush winds down. - Recognizing Holiday Hazards: 5 Seasonal Safety Tips For Pet Owners
Recognizing Holiday Hazards: 5 Seasonal Safety Tips For Pet Owners (Family Features) December 1, 2022 Share The holiday season presents opportunities for celebrating with loved ones, for many families, that includes their dogs and cats. However, holiday foods and decorations can pose health risks for pets and the hustle and bustle may be overwhelming. To help keep your pet safe amid the jolly chaos, consider these potential hazards from the experts at VCA Animal Hospitals, which has more than 1,000 locations across North America that cared for more than 4.5 million pets last year. Decorations Decorations are part of almost every holiday celebration but making some pet-proofed choices can make your home safe for four-legged guests as well. If you put up a tree (live or artificial), ensure it's set up securely and use shatter-proof ornaments, ideally hung above tail height and out of paws' reach. If you have kittens less than 1 year old in your home, they sometimes like to climb up the tree trunk to the top, so extra care may be needed. Hang smaller ornaments toward the top of the tree to reduce potential choking hazards and avoid salt dough ornaments, which may look like a snack to pets but can cause electrolyte problems, tinsel as it can become lodged in a pet's gut and cause issues. Additionally, consider battery-operated candles instead of real ones, which can be easily knocked over by curious pets and burn them or lead to more serious fire risks. Dangling cords from seasonal decor can also appeal to pets, if chewed while plugged in could result in electrical shock or burns to the tongue, so secure them out of sight and unplug them when not in use. Food With the holidays comes a delicious variety of baked goods, Chocolate confections and other rich foods. However, some of those seasonal goodies can present problems for pets. For example, Chocolate and Cocoa contain Theobromine, a chemical similar to Caffeine that's highly toxic to both dogs and cats. Ingestion in small amounts can cause vomiting and Diarrhea, but large amounts can cause Seizures and Heart Arrhythmias. Other traditional holiday mainstays such as fruitcakes, breads and cookies that contain grapes, raisins or currants can cause Kidney Failure in dogs. Sugarless Gums and Candies may contain Xylitol, a natural sweetener, which can cause serious conditions like dangerously low Blood Sugar and Liver Failure in dogs. Leftover fatty meat scraps can produce severe inflammation of the Pancreas (Pancreatitis), leading to abdominal pain, vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Plants Although live trees are non-toxic, their needles do not digest well and their water may contain Bacteria, Mold or Fertilizer that should not be ingested. Additionally, Poinsettias, which often have a bad reputation among pet owners, can cause upset stomachs if the leaves are ingested though it's typically milder than the symptoms associated with Holly, Mistletoe and Amaryllis. Daffodils, Lilies and Narcissi are also toxic to pets. Guests An increase in visitors, ringing of the doorbell and extra excitement of the holiday season can be stressful for pets. Try to keep your four-legged friend's feeding and exercise schedule as regular as possible, make time for additional stress-relieving playtime and snuggles. To help avoid overstimulation, it may be best to keep your pets in their own crates or a quiet room with food, water and comfortable bedding while you have company. If you need additional assistance, consult with your Veterinarian. Travel Holiday travel with your four-legged family members requires some extra packing and precautions. If traveling by car, make sure your pet is safely restrained using a secure harness or carrier and placed away from any airbags. Make sure pets are Microchipped and their Registration is up to date in case you become separated. Never leave pets alone in a vehicle or transport them in the bed of a truck. Also be sure you have updated Health Certificates from your Veterinarian, if required by any states you will visit or pass through and pack copies of Medical Records, First Aid Supplies, food and Medications, leashes, collars and favorite toys. - At The Heart Of Philanthropy - Strengthening Cardiovascular Care For The Future | sun-times
At The Heart Of Philanthropy - Strengthening Cardiovascular Care For The Future South Florida Sun Times Mar 19, 2026 While American Heart Month Just Passed, Every Month Should Draw Attention To Cardiovascular Disease, The Leading Cause Of Death In The United States. Although Medical Advances Have Improved Outcomes Over Time, Rising Rates Of Obesity And Diabetes And An Aging Population Are Placing New Pressure On Health Systems To Plan For The Future. Memorial Healthcare System, In Partnership With The Memorial Foundation And The Memorial Cardiac And Vascular Institute, Is Doing Just That, Advancing A Forward-Looking Approach To Cardiovascular Care Focused On Clinical Integration, Physician Training And Targeted Investment. According to Ralph M. Levy, MD, Chief of Cardiology at Memorial Healthcare System and a member of the Memorial Foundation Board of Directors, Cardiovascular care is constantly evolving. “The field continues to change,” Dr. Levy said. “Our knowledge, our tools and our needs change with it. As new medications, procedures and technologies emerge, meeting those changes requires ongoing investment in equipment, infrastructure and innovation.” When Dr. Levy assumed the role of Chief of Cardiology more than seven years ago, Memorial’s Cardiovascular program had not yet fully adopted an integrated institute model. One of Dr. Levy’s primary priorities was building a coordinated structure with defined subspecialties and a strong culture of collaboration. Today, the Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute operates as a fully integrated program, with physicians across multiple subspecialties working together to evaluate complex cases and determine the most effective course of care for each patient. The Institute now includes 60 to 70 physicians specializing in areas such as Electrophysiology, advanced Heart Failure and transplantation, Cardiac Imaging, Interventional Cardiology and Clinical Cardiology. Dedicated teams support heart rhythm care, advanced Heart Failure services and sophisticated diagnostic imaging, while interventional and structural cardiologists perform procedures including stent placement and minimally invasive valve interventions. Cardiac, transplant and vascular surgeons work closely with the Institute as part of a comprehensive, team-based care model. Each year, the Institute manages an estimated 120,000 patient encounters. Just as important as its size is how the program functions. Physicians meet regularly across disciplines to review complex cases and align on treatment plans. Weekly Cardiovascular rounds further support this collaborative environment, bringing clinicians together to share clinical advances, emerging research and insights from visiting experts. The Institute has made a deliberate shift toward a more academic model of care. Its cardiology fellowship program now includes 15 fellows, with five trainees entering each year. The program has graduated its first two classes over the past two years, and Memorial has begun hiring fellowship graduates to join the medical staff. “When you’re teaching fellows, everyone stays focused and accountable,” Dr. Levy said. “You have to explain your decisions and justify your approach, and that raises the level of care across the board.” Training is also central to addressing long-term access to Cardiovascular care, as the specialty faces a national workforce challenge. Nearly a quarter of cardiologists are over the age of 60, while demand for Cardiovascular services continues to rise as the population ages and rates of Obesity and Diabetes increase. “We’re seeing more patients, more complexity and fewer physicians entering the field at the same pace,” Levy said. “That makes it essential to invest not just in facilities and technology, but in training the next generation of Cardiologists so access doesn’t become a barrier to care.” National projections reflect that concern. According to the American College of Cardiology, demand for Cardiovascular care is expected to outpace the cardiology workforce over the next decade as retirements accelerate and training capacity remains limited. The organization has also reported that more than 60% of U.S. counties have no cardiologists. As demand for Cardiovascular care continues to increase, access is a central consideration for heart programs nationwide. Even as the Memorial system recruits new physicians, schedules fill quickly, reflecting the volume of patients seeking care. To meet that demand, the Institute must continue expanding capacity and updating the tools clinicians rely on every day. Philanthropy plays a complementary role in supporting Memorial’s long-term goal by helping to address targeted needs that emerge as Cardiovascular care continues to evolve. In the past, philanthropic investment has supported community health screenings and specialized equipment such as a Cardiometabolic Stress Laboratory, which has strengthened diagnostic capabilities for patients with complex conditions. One current area of focus is cardiac imaging. As imaging volumes grow, Memorial is evaluating advanced workflow technologies designed to improve efficiency and expand capacity. According to Dr. Levy, one proposed imaging platform could increase throughput by as much as 30% to 40%, allowing physicians to interpret studies more efficiently and enable more patients to be evaluated in a timely manner. “New technology can standardize visualization and analysis, allowing physicians to interpret complex studies more efficiently and reduce delays in patient care,” Dr. Levy said. “It’s a very specific, measurable need, and we can clearly define the benefit.” Memorial also continues to invest in Infrastructure that supports Cardiovascular care, including an approximately $15 Million retrofit of its Memorial Hospital West facility. This project will relocate Clinical Cardiology offices, house Memorial’s first dedicated Cardiac CT scanner, and expand capacity for adult heart transplant services, while the remainder of Memorial Cardiac & Vascular Institute services will continue to operate at Memorial Regional Hospital. Dr. Levy recently joined the Memorial Foundation Board, where he hopes to help align philanthropic priorities with the evolving needs of adult cardiovascular care, which is central to the health system’s mission and long-term impact. “Philanthropy allows us to move faster and be more precise in how we expand access,” Dr. Levy said. “It’s about investing strategically in capacity so we can meet the needs of our community over the long term.” For Dr. Levy, the message is one of readiness. Cardiovascular Disease is not going away, and the responsibility of health systems is to be prepared. That means having the right people, the right tools and the right infrastructure in place not only for today, but for the future. Previous Next
- Keeping Pets Safe At Halloween: A Veterinarian’s Advice | sun-times
Keeping Pets Safe At Halloween: A Veterinarian’s Advice South Florida Sun Times Oct 29, 2025 When The Leaves Begin To Turn Colors And Pumpkins Begin Appearing On Neighborhood Porches, You Know That Halloween Is Just Around The Corner. While Spooky Season Is A Fun Time Of The Year For Many People, It Can Also Become A Little Too Scary For Pets If Owners Don’t Take Precautions. Dr. Erin Ray, a clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), and Dr. Lori Teller, a VMBS clinical professor, share their veterinary advice for keeping pets safe at Halloween to help pet owners best celebrate the spooky season with their furry friends. Halloween Food Safety For Pets One of the most iconic parts of Halloween is the food, including candy and party snacks like popcorn balls and caramel-covered apples. Because these foods are abundant at this time of year, pet owners should pay close attention to what treats their animals indulge in. “It is vital to be careful with any candy and food that could be potentially toxic for your pet to ingest throughout this holiday season,” Ray said. Common ingredients that are harmful for pets include: • Chocolate • Onion • Garlic • Xylitol (an artificial sweetener) • Any fatty or rich food “Pet treats are a fun thing to give to pets, as long as they aren’t too rich, don’t contain toxic ingredients, can’t pose a choking hazard, or aren’t too hard,” Ray said. If you find yourself in a situation where your pet has consumed something potentially detrimental to their health, The ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control can be reached at (888) 426-4435 and the Pet Poison Helpline can be reached at (855) 764-7661. Alternatives To Offering Treats If you’re concerned about the contents of pet treats, another way to celebrate Halloween while keeping your pet safe is by investing in a new toy. “Toys that can’t be ripped apart, broken into pieces, or have pieces taken off of them are a great thing to give your furry friend during the holidays, with owner supervision,” Ray said. “This is particularly true for string toys for cats.” Helping Pets Cope With Crowds And Noises Visiting haunted houses and watching horror movies may be how some Halloween enthusiasts enjoy celebrating the season, but pets don’t always share their owners’ affinity for the frightening. “Pets can exhibit signs of fear in new, crowded, or loud situations, which would include places like haunted houses, hay mazes, and even loud movies in their normal home,” Ray said. “They can often mirror their owner’s emotions, too, so if an owner is scared, nervous, or anxious, the pet can show similar signs.” Ways that pets exhibit fear and anxiety can include: • Ears back and tail tucked • Dilated pupils • Hiding/cowering • Trying to run away • Hair on back/tail erect Dogs may also show fear by barking or biting, while cats may hiss or swat. Is Trick-Or-Treating Safe For Pets? Whether your pet should accompany you out for a night of trick-or-treating is largely dependent on their personality and how familiar they are with the activity. Even if you intend to stay at home for the night, Ray encourages owners to make sure to consider your pet’s comfort when making your Halloween plans. “Parties and trick-or-treating can be fun for some animals, such as well-socialized dogs or cats who enjoy the attention, but these activities can be stressful for others because of the scary shapes and sounds, like the doorbell ringing,” Ray said. “Costumes can also scare pets if they are big, elaborate, or not something that the animal has seen before.” With this in mind, Ray strongly recommends that pet owners take caution during parties where a pet could come across unsuspecting threats. If people are visiting, it’s also important to communicate which treats can and cannot be shared with pets. “A trial run with a small group of friends can be a good way to assess how your pet will respond to other people, and start getting them familiar with parties and festivities,” Ray said. Dealing With Halloween Decorations Just as some people prefer to celebrate the season with harvest imagery and others lean into the spooky side, pets’ love of Halloween decorations can be personality-dependent. “Many animals do not appreciate large, new decorations that could scare them or make them nervous, while others may enjoy playing with them or trying to chew them,” Ray said. “Any decorative items lying around that could be chewed on or swallowed have the opportunity to become foreign body risks.” Are Pumpkins Safe For Pets? In general, pumpkin can be an excellent treat for cats and dogs because it is both tasty and low in calories, making it a healthy alternative to traditional treats. “Pumpkins are roughly 90% water, so they can be filling for a pet without increasing their caloric intake, which is beneficial for overweight or obese pets,” Teller said. Letting pets munch on the insides of a fresh pumpkin, can provide other health benefits, specifically by providing fiber that can ease digestive issues, but only if eaten in conservative amounts. “Because the seeds or the fibrous strands are very high in fiber, eating too much can cause stomach upset,” Teller said. “When owners let their pet eat pumpkin, they should think of it like they are feeding their pet treats — treats should make up less than 10% of their total caloric intake.” Halloween is a time for candy, laughs, and a scare or two. With some simple adjustments, it can be a fun holiday for the entire family. Previous Next

- A Paw-sitive Impact: How Pets Enrich The Lives Of The Elderly | sun-times
A Paw-sitive Impact: How Pets Enrich The Lives Of The Elderly South Florida Sun Times Jun 19, 2025 The Number Of Adults Aged 65 And Older Is Growing, And Older Adults Are At Higher Risk For Social Isolation And Loneliness Due To Changes In Health And Social Connections That Can Come With Growing Older, According To The National Institute On Aging. The Companionship Of A Wagging Tail Or A Soft Purr, However, Can Enrich The Lives Of Older Adults. Dr. Erin Ray, a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, shares the physical and mental health benefits of older adults having a pet to walk by their side through their golden years. Four-Legged Therapists One of the benefits of investing in a companion animal, according to Ray, is that it offers an older population a renewed sense of purpose and responsibility in their daily lives. “Numerous studies have been conducted to assess the advantages of pet ownership,” Ray said. “Pet owners tend to be more physically active, have a reduced risk of Heart Disease, and engage in more social interactions with others due to their pets. Consequently, they often experience less loneliness and stress compared to people without pets.” Having a pet also provides structure to older owners’ days and keeps them busier as they establish and maintain their pet’s daily routine, including regular meals, walks, and play time. “This routine can provide a mutual benefit, improving physical activity, mental stimulation, and positive interactions for both the owner and their pet,” Ray said. In addition, pets help fulfill the emotional and caregiving instincts that many humans have, especially for those whose children no longer rely on them for constant care. “Getting out of bed, getting yourself dressed, and caring for the house and yard tend to be more important when another living creature is relying on you,” Ray said. “Also, pets are often very affectionate and can be great listeners, acting as a confidant for their owner.” Furry Friendships A perhaps unexpected consequence of pet ownership for older people is that a pet may bring them out into their neighborhood, attracting neighbors and friendly faces of all kinds, thereby alleviating isolation. “Older owners with pets are oftentimes more sociable within the neighborhood with both fellow pet owners and people without pets,” Ray said. “Pets often encourage people to step outside for walks or visit public places like dog parks, horse barns, and so on, where they can interact with other people.” Forming connections in the community becomes much easier with an adorable companion by your side, as people tend to be more comfortable talking to or about an animal rather than directly to a stranger. Ray also notes that these relationships can often lead to people performing favors for one another, such as house sitting or feeding a neighbor’s pet. This can effectively foster a support system from non-family members to become invested in the well-being of the older adult – especially when family is not nearby. Challenges And Considerations The greatest priority in older adult pet ownership is ensuring that the owner can properly care for the animal they are committing to. Specific challenges older pet owners may encounter include: • Difficulty administering medication for a pet’s chronic illness or other ailment. • Struggling to keep up with more active pets’ physical needs, like frequent walks, playing with toys, or horseback riding. • Getting pets to and from veterinary visits, traveling with owners, or finding care when leaving town. Ray also identifies behavioral challenges as another potential hurdle for older owners. Extreme co-dependence can lead to high cases of anxiety that can pose occasional dilemmas for an older owner. Finding The Paw-fect Match When an older adult is selecting the “purrfect” pet to match the specific needs in their life, there are several important factors to consider. For example, the size and type of pet is entirely dependent on the person. “Pets can range from horses, to dogs, to birds, to fish, and everything in between,” Ray said. “A few things owners should consider when choosing a companion are their lifestyle and personal physical abilities; the cost of ownership; and breed characteristics.” Much like searching for a best friend whose lifestyle aligns with their own, their next furry best friend should desire the day-to-day routine they are able to offer. “For example, owners who don't want to or are unable to go on hikes, runs, or long walks may avoid very athletic and high-energy dogs,” Ray said. Another consideration is being wary of pets that showcase signs of separation anxiety if the owner travels frequently and is unable to bring their nervous furry friend along for the ride. On a more serious note, older individuals who are more susceptible to Autoimmune risks should be cautious when choosing a fish, as some tank environments can carry the potential for disease transmission. A Lifelong Companion Investing in a furry friend can bring an immense amount of joy and companionship to an older person’s life, as long as the owner is capable of providing proper care. Family may play an important role in making this pet ownership possible if they are inclined to assist with the animal's care to help minimize the challenges experienced by the older owner. “Oftentimes, the benefits of pet ownership vastly outweigh the potential complications or hurdles for many older people for the right pet,” Ray said. “Ultimately, pet ownership can help an isolated person feel loved and appreciated.” Pet Talk is a service of the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Texas A&M University.
