  • At The Heart Of Philanthropy - Strengthening Cardiovascular Care For The Future | sun-times

At The Heart Of Philanthropy - Strengthening Cardiovascular Care For The Future South Florida Sun Times Mar 19, 2026 While American Heart Month Just Passed, Every Month Should Draw Attention To Cardiovascular Disease, The Leading Cause Of Death In The United States. Although Medical Advances Have Improved Outcomes Over Time, Rising Rates Of Obesity And Diabetes And An Aging Population Are Placing New Pressure On Health Systems To Plan For The Future. Memorial Healthcare System, In Partnership With The Memorial Foundation And The Memorial Cardiac And Vascular Institute, Is Doing Just That, Advancing A Forward-Looking Approach To Cardiovascular Care Focused On Clinical Integration, Physician Training And Targeted Investment. According to Ralph M. Levy, MD, Chief of Cardiology at Memorial Healthcare System and a member of the Memorial Foundation Board of Directors, Cardiovascular care is constantly evolving. “The field continues to change,” Dr. Levy said. “Our knowledge, our tools and our needs change with it. As new medications, procedures and technologies emerge, meeting those changes requires ongoing investment in equipment, infrastructure and innovation.” When Dr. Levy assumed the role of Chief of Cardiology more than seven years ago, Memorial’s Cardiovascular program had not yet fully adopted an integrated institute model. One of Dr. Levy’s primary priorities was building a coordinated structure with defined subspecialties and a strong culture of collaboration. Today, the Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute operates as a fully integrated program, with physicians across multiple subspecialties working together to evaluate complex cases and determine the most effective course of care for each patient. The Institute now includes 60 to 70 physicians specializing in areas such as Electrophysiology, advanced Heart Failure and transplantation, Cardiac Imaging, Interventional Cardiology and Clinical Cardiology. Dedicated teams support heart rhythm care, advanced Heart Failure services and sophisticated diagnostic imaging, while interventional and structural cardiologists perform procedures including stent placement and minimally invasive valve interventions. Cardiac, transplant and vascular surgeons work closely with the Institute as part of a comprehensive, team-based care model. Each year, the Institute manages an estimated 120,000 patient encounters. Just as important as its size is how the program functions. Physicians meet regularly across disciplines to review complex cases and align on treatment plans. Weekly Cardiovascular rounds further support this collaborative environment, bringing clinicians together to share clinical advances, emerging research and insights from visiting experts. The Institute has made a deliberate shift toward a more academic model of care. Its cardiology fellowship program now includes 15 fellows, with five trainees entering each year. The program has graduated its first two classes over the past two years, and Memorial has begun hiring fellowship graduates to join the medical staff. “When you’re teaching fellows, everyone stays focused and accountable,” Dr. Levy said. “You have to explain your decisions and justify your approach, and that raises the level of care across the board.” Training is also central to addressing long-term access to Cardiovascular care, as the specialty faces a national workforce challenge. Nearly a quarter of cardiologists are over the age of 60, while demand for Cardiovascular services continues to rise as the population ages and rates of Obesity and Diabetes increase. “We’re seeing more patients, more complexity and fewer physicians entering the field at the same pace,” Levy said. “That makes it essential to invest not just in facilities and technology, but in training the next generation of Cardiologists so access doesn’t become a barrier to care.” National projections reflect that concern. According to the American College of Cardiology, demand for Cardiovascular care is expected to outpace the cardiology workforce over the next decade as retirements accelerate and training capacity remains limited. The organization has also reported that more than 60% of U.S. counties have no cardiologists. As demand for Cardiovascular care continues to increase, access is a central consideration for heart programs nationwide. Even as the Memorial system recruits new physicians, schedules fill quickly, reflecting the volume of patients seeking care. To meet that demand, the Institute must continue expanding capacity and updating the tools clinicians rely on every day. Philanthropy plays a complementary role in supporting Memorial’s long-term goal by helping to address targeted needs that emerge as Cardiovascular care continues to evolve. In the past, philanthropic investment has supported community health screenings and specialized equipment such as a Cardiometabolic Stress Laboratory, which has strengthened diagnostic capabilities for patients with complex conditions. One current area of focus is cardiac imaging. As imaging volumes grow, Memorial is evaluating advanced workflow technologies designed to improve efficiency and expand capacity. According to Dr. Levy, one proposed imaging platform could increase throughput by as much as 30% to 40%, allowing physicians to interpret studies more efficiently and enable more patients to be evaluated in a timely manner. “New technology can standardize visualization and analysis, allowing physicians to interpret complex studies more efficiently and reduce delays in patient care,” Dr. Levy said. “It’s a very specific, measurable need, and we can clearly define the benefit.” Memorial also continues to invest in Infrastructure that supports Cardiovascular care, including an approximately $15 Million retrofit of its Memorial Hospital West facility. This project will relocate Clinical Cardiology offices, house Memorial’s first dedicated Cardiac CT scanner, and expand capacity for adult heart transplant services, while the remainder of Memorial Cardiac & Vascular Institute services will continue to operate at Memorial Regional Hospital. Dr. Levy recently joined the Memorial Foundation Board, where he hopes to help align philanthropic priorities with the evolving needs of adult cardiovascular care, which is central to the health system’s mission and long-term impact. “Philanthropy allows us to move faster and be more precise in how we expand access,” Dr. Levy said. “It’s about investing strategically in capacity so we can meet the needs of our community over the long term.” For Dr. Levy, the message is one of readiness. Cardiovascular Disease is not going away, and the responsibility of health systems is to be prepared. That means having the right people, the right tools and the right infrastructure in place not only for today, but for the future. Previous Next

  • Keeping Pets Safe At Halloween: A Veterinarian’s Advice | sun-times

Keeping Pets Safe At Halloween: A Veterinarian’s Advice South Florida Sun Times Oct 29, 2025 When The Leaves Begin To Turn Colors And Pumpkins Begin Appearing On Neighborhood Porches, You Know That Halloween Is Just Around The Corner. While Spooky Season Is A Fun Time Of The Year For Many People, It Can Also Become A Little Too Scary For Pets If Owners Don’t Take Precautions. Dr. Erin Ray, a clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), and Dr. Lori Teller, a VMBS clinical professor, share their veterinary advice for keeping pets safe at Halloween to help pet owners best celebrate the spooky season with their furry friends. Halloween Food Safety For Pets One of the most iconic parts of Halloween is the food, including candy and party snacks like popcorn balls and caramel-covered apples. Because these foods are abundant at this time of year, pet owners should pay close attention to what treats their animals indulge in. “It is vital to be careful with any candy and food that could be potentially toxic for your pet to ingest throughout this holiday season,” Ray said. Common ingredients that are harmful for pets include: • Chocolate • Onion • Garlic • Xylitol (an artificial sweetener) • Any fatty or rich food “Pet treats are a fun thing to give to pets, as long as they aren’t too rich, don’t contain toxic ingredients, can’t pose a choking hazard, or aren’t too hard,” Ray said. If you find yourself in a situation where your pet has consumed something potentially detrimental to their health, The ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control can be reached at (888) 426-4435 and the Pet Poison Helpline can be reached at (855) 764-7661. Alternatives To Offering Treats If you’re concerned about the contents of pet treats, another way to celebrate Halloween while keeping your pet safe is by investing in a new toy. “Toys that can’t be ripped apart, broken into pieces, or have pieces taken off of them are a great thing to give your furry friend during the holidays, with owner supervision,” Ray said. “This is particularly true for string toys for cats.” Helping Pets Cope With Crowds And Noises Visiting haunted houses and watching horror movies may be how some Halloween enthusiasts enjoy celebrating the season, but pets don’t always share their owners’ affinity for the frightening. “Pets can exhibit signs of fear in new, crowded, or loud situations, which would include places like haunted houses, hay mazes, and even loud movies in their normal home,” Ray said. “They can often mirror their owner’s emotions, too, so if an owner is scared, nervous, or anxious, the pet can show similar signs.” Ways that pets exhibit fear and anxiety can include: • Ears back and tail tucked • Dilated pupils • Hiding/cowering • Trying to run away • Hair on back/tail erect Dogs may also show fear by barking or biting, while cats may hiss or swat. Is Trick-Or-Treating Safe For Pets? Whether your pet should accompany you out for a night of trick-or-treating is largely dependent on their personality and how familiar they are with the activity. Even if you intend to stay at home for the night, Ray encourages owners to make sure to consider your pet’s comfort when making your Halloween plans. “Parties and trick-or-treating can be fun for some animals, such as well-socialized dogs or cats who enjoy the attention, but these activities can be stressful for others because of the scary shapes and sounds, like the doorbell ringing,” Ray said. “Costumes can also scare pets if they are big, elaborate, or not something that the animal has seen before.” With this in mind, Ray strongly recommends that pet owners take caution during parties where a pet could come across unsuspecting threats. If people are visiting, it’s also important to communicate which treats can and cannot be shared with pets. “A trial run with a small group of friends can be a good way to assess how your pet will respond to other people, and start getting them familiar with parties and festivities,” Ray said. Dealing With Halloween Decorations Just as some people prefer to celebrate the season with harvest imagery and others lean into the spooky side, pets’ love of Halloween decorations can be personality-dependent. “Many animals do not appreciate large, new decorations that could scare them or make them nervous, while others may enjoy playing with them or trying to chew them,” Ray said. “Any decorative items lying around that could be chewed on or swallowed have the opportunity to become foreign body risks.” Are Pumpkins Safe For Pets? In general, pumpkin can be an excellent treat for cats and dogs because it is both tasty and low in calories, making it a healthy alternative to traditional treats. “Pumpkins are roughly 90% water, so they can be filling for a pet without increasing their caloric intake, which is beneficial for overweight or obese pets,” Teller said. Letting pets munch on the insides of a fresh pumpkin, can provide other health benefits, specifically by providing fiber that can ease digestive issues, but only if eaten in conservative amounts. “Because the seeds or the fibrous strands are very high in fiber, eating too much can cause stomach upset,” Teller said. “When owners let their pet eat pumpkin, they should think of it like they are feeding their pet treats — treats should make up less than 10% of their total caloric intake.” Halloween is a time for candy, laughs, and a scare or two. With some simple adjustments, it can be a fun holiday for the entire family. Previous Next

  • A Paw-sitive Impact: How Pets Enrich The Lives Of The Elderly | sun-times

A Paw-sitive Impact: How Pets Enrich The Lives Of The Elderly South Florida Sun Times Jun 19, 2025 The Number Of Adults Aged 65 And Older Is Growing, And Older Adults Are At Higher Risk For Social Isolation And Loneliness Due To Changes In Health And Social Connections That Can Come With Growing Older, According To The National Institute On Aging. The Companionship Of A Wagging Tail Or A Soft Purr, However, Can Enrich The Lives Of Older Adults. Dr. Erin Ray, a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, shares the physical and mental health benefits of older adults having a pet to walk by their side through their golden years. Four-Legged Therapists One of the benefits of investing in a companion animal, according to Ray, is that it offers an older population a renewed sense of purpose and responsibility in their daily lives. “Numerous studies have been conducted to assess the advantages of pet ownership,” Ray said. “Pet owners tend to be more physically active, have a reduced risk of Heart Disease, and engage in more social interactions with others due to their pets. Consequently, they often experience less loneliness and stress compared to people without pets.” Having a pet also provides structure to older owners’ days and keeps them busier as they establish and maintain their pet’s daily routine, including regular meals, walks, and play time. “This routine can provide a mutual benefit, improving physical activity, mental stimulation, and positive interactions for both the owner and their pet,” Ray said. In addition, pets help fulfill the emotional and caregiving instincts that many humans have, especially for those whose children no longer rely on them for constant care. “Getting out of bed, getting yourself dressed, and caring for the house and yard tend to be more important when another living creature is relying on you,” Ray said. “Also, pets are often very affectionate and can be great listeners, acting as a confidant for their owner.” Furry Friendships A perhaps unexpected consequence of pet ownership for older people is that a pet may bring them out into their neighborhood, attracting neighbors and friendly faces of all kinds, thereby alleviating isolation. “Older owners with pets are oftentimes more sociable within the neighborhood with both fellow pet owners and people without pets,” Ray said. “Pets often encourage people to step outside for walks or visit public places like dog parks, horse barns, and so on, where they can interact with other people.” Forming connections in the community becomes much easier with an adorable companion by your side, as people tend to be more comfortable talking to or about an animal rather than directly to a stranger. Ray also notes that these relationships can often lead to people performing favors for one another, such as house sitting or feeding a neighbor’s pet. This can effectively foster a support system from non-family members to become invested in the well-being of the older adult – especially when family is not nearby. Challenges And Considerations The greatest priority in older adult pet ownership is ensuring that the owner can properly care for the animal they are committing to. Specific challenges older pet owners may encounter include: • Difficulty administering medication for a pet’s chronic illness or other ailment. • Struggling to keep up with more active pets’ physical needs, like frequent walks, playing with toys, or horseback riding. • Getting pets to and from veterinary visits, traveling with owners, or finding care when leaving town. Ray also identifies behavioral challenges as another potential hurdle for older owners. Extreme co-dependence can lead to high cases of anxiety that can pose occasional dilemmas for an older owner. Finding The Paw-fect Match When an older adult is selecting the “purrfect” pet to match the specific needs in their life, there are several important factors to consider. For example, the size and type of pet is entirely dependent on the person. “Pets can range from horses, to dogs, to birds, to fish, and everything in between,” Ray said. “A few things owners should consider when choosing a companion are their lifestyle and personal physical abilities; the cost of ownership; and breed characteristics.” Much like searching for a best friend whose lifestyle aligns with their own, their next furry best friend should desire the day-to-day routine they are able to offer. “For example, owners who don't want to or are unable to go on hikes, runs, or long walks may avoid very athletic and high-energy dogs,” Ray said. Another consideration is being wary of pets that showcase signs of separation anxiety if the owner travels frequently and is unable to bring their nervous furry friend along for the ride. On a more serious note, older individuals who are more susceptible to Autoimmune risks should be cautious when choosing a fish, as some tank environments can carry the potential for disease transmission. A Lifelong Companion Investing in a furry friend can bring an immense amount of joy and companionship to an older person’s life, as long as the owner is capable of providing proper care. Family may play an important role in making this pet ownership possible if they are inclined to assist with the animal's care to help minimize the challenges experienced by the older owner. “Oftentimes, the benefits of pet ownership vastly outweigh the potential complications or hurdles for many older people for the right pet,” Ray said. “Ultimately, pet ownership can help an isolated person feel loved and appreciated.” Pet Talk is a service of the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Texas A&M University. Transportation Of The Future By Hallandale Beach, Mayor Joy Cooper May 14, 2026 Last Thursday, I Had The Privilege And Honor Of Celebrating The National Day Of Prayer Interfaith Breakfast. This Year’s Theme Was Peace For Every Generation In Unity. I Want To Thank Our City’s Faith Leaders Who Made It All Possible. Reverend Dr. Jennifer B. Reynolds Of Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Was This Year’s Gracious MC And Vocalist, Qunea Gordon Of Greater Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Reverend Dr. Anthony A. Sanders Of The Vision Center, Senator Shevrin Jones Of Koinonia Worship Center And Village, Imam MR Sarjeel Ahmed Of Our Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s Miami Chapter, Minister Glenda Henderson Of The Vision Center, Minister Shirley King Of The Vision Center And Founder Of Life On Power, And Dr. Deborah Brown Of The Gathering Of Warriors Fellowship And Zamar School Of Performing Arts. A Special Thanks To The Ministerial Alliance Of South Broward, PAL Of Hallandale Beach, Hallandale Beach Police Department And Rabbi Mordy Feiner Of The Chabad Of South Broward Who Has Been A Long Time Supporter. Miami was all about tech last week. It started with the e-Merge event, then Israel Tech week kicked off and CoMotion. I was able to attend CoMotion on Tuesday and Wednesday which was hosted at Wolfson Campus of Miami Dade College. Our Transportation Director Dr. Shen actually made a presentation of our Cloud Bus system. I was excited to research and connect with the many new alternative modes of transportation, EVTols, Wing and Waymo to name a few. With the adoption of enabling legislation on the national and most importantly state levels, Florida is poised to unleash this transformational wave of technology. Waymo is already on the road in Miami and Zook the new competitor can also be seen traveling on the roadways. Some readers may be unaware that currently the new Tesla’s already have the capability to drive without a driver. A driver can sit back and watch the car drive itself. I approached the representative of Waymo to inquire about a partnership. The new laws have made it much easier to enter into pilot programs. Aventura now has an agreement with Waymo through an FDOT Grant. Waymo shared that they have a goal to build out through the U.S. 1 Corridor. These driverless cars can address what transportation industry calls the last half mile. The micro transit can connect riders to fixed routes and mass transit. EvTols Electric vertical take off and landing aircrafts are currently being tested throughout the country. These manned drones are now being tested in NYC. Joby and Archer are the two companies that have been successful to date, bringing them to the market as a new wave helicopter. They are battery powered so they are much quieter than traditional with a target of 20 decimals. This level can be compared to the rustle of leave. I have been following this issue very closely as we look to redevelop our city hall into a complete civic center with a combination of multiple uses. Looking toward the future our City should be planning for this new mode of transit. Companies now are scouting locations for leases and storage. In our plan we know we need a parking garage. Sharing the garage with a lease could generate revenue. The next new wave of transportation is drone delivery. Wings, a company out of Texas has successfully partnered with Door Dash and Walmart. The system allows for delivery of items in a fraction of the time as you do not need to wait for a driver. The drone has a built-in hook system. The package is connected; the drone lifts off and is sent promptly to the delivery location. The drone does not land it actually drops the package down and the weight dislodges the package. I approached them at the conference to inquire about our Walmart. As fate would have it, they are looking to our Walmart to add Wing. I requested an agenda item to have discussions about the program and what steps we need to take by the City to implement Wings. While these are exciting times, changes of this nature can be daunting. The whole shift to the use of AI and these newer technologies is here and it is moving pretty fast. The FAA on the state and national levels are the main players when it comes to regulations. On the city side we need to ensure we are planning to integrate them properly. • ‘Shari & Lamb Chop’ Documentary At The Boca International Jewish Film Festival | sun-times

‘Shari & Lamb Chop’ Documentary At The Boca International Jewish Film Festival By Linda Chase - Jewish Connection News Jan 7, 2025 The Boca International Jewish Film Festival returns for its second season with the Florida premiere screening of the documentary “Shari & Lamb Chop.” The film will be presented during the festival’s Cinebash on January 27th, 2025, at the Wick Theater in Boca Raton. The evening includes a patron dinner beginning at 5:00 p.m., film screening and a live performance by Mallory Lewis (Shari Lewis’ daughter) and Lamb Chop. Film only tickets are available for $36. The festival runs from February 23rd through March 16th with screenings presented at both Movies of Delray and Cinemark Palace 20 in Boca Raton. “Shari & Lamb Chop” explores the legacy of Puppeteer and Television Host Shari Lewis through Mallory’s eyes. During our interview, Mallory (who tours performing the Lamb Chop Legacy Show) shared memories of her mother. “Mom was from the Bronx. My grandfather was Peter Pan the Magic Man (the official magician for the city of New York.) He was also a professor at the Yeshiva. My grandmother was a music teacher in the Bronx schools. Between them, my mother inherited both the magic and the music. She was surrounded by Vaudeville performers as a child and used to perform alongside her father. She learned all of the Vaudeville arts, but it was the ventriloquism that made her famous.” Mallory shared how her mother and Lamb Chop became cultural icons and changed the face of children’s television. “When mom got her first television series in 1956/57 she did something no other performers were doing at the time; she broke the fourth wall and looked into the camera and connected deeply with the children. Throughout her career, she treated children with respect and encouraged them to be their best self rather than just offering them mindless entertainment. In fact, mom was the creator of the term ‘edu-tainment.’ It is important to remember that when mom first began performing there were only three channels and most homes only had one TV, so likely most families were watching the same program. Unlike children’s performers of her time she did a very sophisticated show that appealed to parents as well.” “It was wonderful to grow up as Shari’s daughter and even to this day it is wonderful being her daughter. I am very blessed to always be greeted by people with the love that she engendered. My comments section on my Social Media is filled with people telling me how much my mother meant to them and how happy they are that I have kept the legacy alive for the last 25 years,” Mallory continued. Mallory shared her thoughts on her mother receiving the long overdue cinematic tribute she deserves. “Director Lisa D'Apolito is passionate about telling the stories of strong, smart, funny women, so mom‘s story spoke to her. I am very happy that the true story will be told. Not with mom being portrayed as a ‘cute little lady with a puppet’ but a more accurate portrayal of her as a three-dimensional woman and a brilliant business person.” For more information regarding the film festival, visit: www.JFilmBoca.org Photo credit is Brad Hood Previous Next

  • Zionist Organization of America - Strongly Opposes A Dangerous Palestinian State Which Reports Claim Is Being Supported By U.S. & Israel | sun-times

Zionist Organization of America - Strongly Opposes A Dangerous Palestinian State Which Reports Claim Is Being Supported By U.S. & Israel By ZOA Jul 9, 2025 Zionist Organization Of America (ZOA) National President Morton A. Klein And ZOA Director Of Research And Special Projects Liz Berney, Esq. Released The Following Statement: Reports yesterday indicate that President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu reached consensus on several “general fundamental principles.” Some of these principles are highly praiseworthy (see below) but others are deeply concerning. We need to say “no” to a Palestinian state: ZOA is deeply concerned that one of the principles is Israel declaring her willingness for future Palestinian conflict resolution under a “two states concept, contingent upon the Palestinian Authority reforms.” A “two-states concept” really means creating a Palestinian Arab terror state on land to which Israel has the sovereign right under binding international law. The “fundamental principle” should be saying “no” to a Palestinian state, as Netanyahu (see below), Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, the Israeli people and their elected parliament has repeatedly done up to now! After so many Israelis suffered on October 7th, and so many fought, died and suffered in the recent and ongoing wars to dramatically set back Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities and its terror proxies’ encirclement of the Jewish homeland, the last thing Israel needs is a Palestinian terror state in the Jewish heartland. After Israel suffered so much damage to stop missiles from Iran, it makes no sense to make any agreements or take any steps toward creating a Palestinian state that can and will use the Judean Hills to fire rockets into Israel’s population centers. A Palestinian state would moreover reward perpetrators of October 7th – including Fatah, the Palestinian Authority’s governing party, which gleefully participated in the October 7th massacres. ZOA reminds all concerned that last July (2024), the Israeli Knesset overwhelmingly voted (68 to 9) that the Knesset opposes the creation of a Palestinian state. (The only nine votes against this were from the Arab Knesset members.) Further, an agreement to create a Palestinian state – even a future or conditioned agreement – will likely be illegal. Under Israel’s Basic Law: Referendum (2014) (Israel’s closest equivalent to a constitution), any agreement that causes Israeli law, jurisdiction or administration to no longer apply to territory in which they currently apply, including an agreement that involves a future undertaking, and a conditioned undertaking, must be approved by either: a majority of the Knesset plus a national referendum, or two-thirds (80 members) of the Knesset. Given the Knesset’s and the Israeli public’s strong opposition to a Palestinian Arab terror state, a Knesset vote or referendum agreeing to a “two states concept” is not likely to pass. Praiseworthy items: The highly praiseworthy general principles that President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu reportedly agreed to include: “remaining Hamas leadership will face exile to other countries;” “multiple nations globally will accept numerous Gaza inhabitants seeking emigration;” and the Abraham Accords will be expanded. Another principle reportedly agreed to (“The United States will acknowledge limited Israeli sovereignty implementation in Judea and Samaria”) is helpful, but “limited” sovereignty does not go nearly far enough. Israel has the right to Judea and Samaria under binding international law. This is home to over 600,000 Jews, and is the historic and religious heartland of the Jewish people. Serious issues items: There are additional serious issues with several general fundamental principles reportedly agreed to: • Only one contingency is mentioned regarding a Palestinian state (“Palestinian Authority reforms”). It is unclear what this means. There is no mention of even the pre-conditions described in President Trump’s 2019 Peace to Prosperity Vision, such as full, permanent demilitarization; overall Israeli security control; monitoring to prevent diversion of dual use items for terror purposes; ending the Palestinian Authority’s terror incitement and financial and other incentives to terrorists, etc. • Egypt is mentioned as one of four Arab nations that will administer the Gaza strip. This is extremely concerning, in light of Egypt’s massive recent buildup of military forces and Infrastructure on its border with Israel, which violates the 1979 Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty and poses a major threat to Israel. Giving Egypt a role in Gaza would provide Egypt with an expanded springboard for endangering and potentially attacking Israel. This isn’t what Israelis fought and died for in Gaza. • There is no explanation of how or when the hostages “will gain freedom” – only a statement that this will somehow occur. By contrast, the reported principles call for hostilities in Gaza to end in two weeks. How can hostilities end in two weeks if the hostages are still not home by then? ZOA urges the U.S. to exert massive pressure on Iran, Qatar and Turkey to obtain the hostages’ release now. There is no mention of this in the agreement. • The security of Israel’s southern communities requires that Israel retain at least some of Gaza. But this is not mentioned. Netanyahu’s Warnings Against a Palestinian State: For numerous good reasons, Prime Minister Netanyahu has repeatedly opposed a Palestinian state and recognized that such a state would be an existential threat to Israel.[i] For instance: • In June 2023, Prime Minister Netanyahu stated during a Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee meeting: “We need to eliminate their [Palestinian Authority Arabs’] aspirations for a state.” (See “ZOA Praises Prime Minister Netanyahu for Opposing Creation of Palestinian Arab (Terrorist Dictatorship) State,” June 27th, 2023). • In March 2018, Netanyahu stated in The New York Times that a Palestinian state “doesn’t work. . . . When we leave land, Arab terror organizations take over. Immediately.” • In July 2017, Netanyahu’s Likud Party (Israel’s largest political party) formally voted to oppose forming a Palestinian Arab state. • In 2015, Netanyahu promised he will not allow a Palestinian Arab state, saying: “Whoever moves to establish a Palestinian state or intends to withdraw from territory is simply yielding territory for radical Islamic terrorist attacks against Israel.” • Netanyahu correctly explained, in his famous 2002 speech to the Likud Central Committee, that a Palestinian Arab state would never keep a demilitarization agreement; would make alliances with foreign powers; would import weapons; would shoot down Israeli planes; and cause Israel to be blamed and curtailed if Israel attempted to enforce demilitarization and prevent terror. Netanyahu declared that if Israel agreed to a Palestinian Arab state, “We will thus have created with our own hands a threat to our very existence.” [i] The sole exception was Netanyahu’s Bar Ilan University speech in 2009 suggesting he would accept a demilitarized Palestinian state under a series of conditions which the Palestinian Arabs have never met and will likely never agree to. Netanyahu made the speech under severe pressure from then-President Obama. (Photo Credit: ZOA) Previous Next
