  • Golden Isles Safe Neighborhood District: A Special Meeting For Residents Was Held To Discuss Changes

Golden Isles Safe Neighborhood District: A Special Meeting For Residents Was Held To Discuss Changes By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper April 7, 2022 Share This past Monday the Golden Isles Safe Neighborhood District held a special meeting for residents of the district to present design concepts for Layne Boulevard. For some time, the district has been discussing upgrading our road to provide a safer environment for pedestrians, bikes and vehicles. Golden Isles was never a planned community so there were never what they call today, “Complete Streets”. Over 50 years ago “Pappy Layne” developed the area by creating finger islands that was once a swamp area divided by A1A and the Intracoastal Waterway. The land was dredged by Layne Boulevard and enclosed with seawalls. The lots were then individually sold to the builders. Many of the homes were built by the same builders that is why there are so many similar types of homes. 31 years ago, we purchased our home from Frank Ippolitto who used to live on Holiday Drive and has since retired. As a side note his son has continued in his footsteps and is a builder here in Hallandale Beach, Troy Ippolitto of Troy Dean Interiors on 8th Avenue and still resides in the neighborhood. In 1991, there were still lots that were filled with Australian Pines or were simply vacant. The Point in Aventura was not even in existence and Aventura was not even a City. There are still no sidewalks and we still have original streets like many other areas of our City. Once the neighborhood grew a group of neighbors united to address security in the area and establish a guard house. In the mid 1980’s Mr David Markowitz went door to door to collect donations and the guard house was built. In order to maintain the operations of the security Mr Markowitz united with Commissioner Sonny Rosenberg to ask Tallahassee to develop, as part of Chapter 163 of Florida State Statutes, Safe Neighborhood District rules and regulations. The district was established as a separate taxing district. Since that time residents living south of the guard house have been paying extra tax to provide the guard house, guards, extra police patrols and upgrades to safety. Our City has another SND (Safe Neighborhood District) in Three Islands. Both of these districts are not private roads but a layer of additional service. They are both unique in the fact that GISND only has one way in and one way out. Three Islands has three. Three Islands Boulevard North and South and Atlantic different types of guard houses. The SND’s are separate dependent districts and are part of the City. The advisory board is comprised of property owners in the district. They make recommendations to the Board of Directors which is comprised of the City Commission. Both districts pay an administrative fee to the City, so that all of the expenses are truly covered by the property owners. Over the past months, the group and the GI Homeowners Association have been working with Stantec Group to develop a Master Plan for GISND. Mon-day’s focus was for Layne Boulevard only. There were three proposals shared by the engineers. Two created a central linear park that would have a ten-foot mixed use trail protected on each side with curbed landscaped islands. These plans would have one lane in and one lane out or a double lane for entrance and exiting the homes and the designated lane for the condominiums. The other plan would provide for a large median and one shared multiple use lane on the east side. The meeting was well attended and many residents seemed to be open to improvements. There were plenty of questions. A super majority in attendance wanted to bury all of the above ground electric and utility lines. Condominium owners were worried about their parking and access. I believe once they saw the designs they understood the parking would be preserved. Ideally many wanted the parking to be moved to the back. This concept will be researched, but there may not be enough right of way in the back. There is a large ten-acre parcel, but it is owned by Gulfstream Park. This meeting was only one (1) of the first rounds for input. Please remember that donations for Ukraine are being collected and include only: SLEEPING BAGS AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES INCLUDING BANDAGES ANTIBIOTIC OINTMENT, ASPIRIN, ETC. • In Times of Tragedy, Check Your Mezuzahs

In Times of Tragedy, Check Your Mezuzahs By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil July 29, 2021 Share It is well known that whenever a tragedy G-d forbid hits, we right away check our Mezuzahs. As every homeowner knows, it's not our alarm system that protects your home, but rather who the alarm will call. You just need to make sure the alarm is connected. A mezuzah on your doorpost works the same way - only that it's connected to a Higher Protection Agency. Much higher. What is a Mezuzah? The mezuzah (Lit. “doorpost”) is a small scroll that contains the Hebrew words of the Shema. Mezuzah scrolls are rolled up and affixed (usually inside a decorative case) to the doorposts of Jewish homes, reminding those who live there of their connection to G‑d and their heritage. The Mezuzah is seen as a symbol of protection for the home. With the start of the Jewish New Year approaching, Chabad Chayil will be hosting a scribe to help the community ensure that their Mezuzahs are legit and properly Kosher. The time leading up to the High Holidays is traditionally dedicated to personal introspection, and according to a wide-spread Jewish custom, this includes checking the mezuzot to ensure they are not fake or unkosher. A Mezuzah is a scroll upon which the first two sections of the Shema — Biblical verses that form a core tenet of the Jewish faith — are handwritten, beginning with the Shema Yisrael prayer - the eternal words “Hear o Israel, the L‑rd is our G‑d, the L‑rd is One." These selections each contain G‑d’s instruction to affix the mezuzah: “You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” These words are handwritten by an expert scribe who is trained in the many laws involved in writing a mezuzah, including the requirement that it be written with special intention, that the words be written in order and on genuine parchment from a Kosher animal, using a special ink. At least twice in seven years, we take down our mezuzahs and have them professionally checked to ascertain that they are still intact. The scribe examines the scrolls to ensure that each letter is still there with all their crowns, no letters have been cracked or faded and that the mezuzah is still good. Our vigilance keeps our mezuzahs performing their function: bringing holiness, protection and merit to our home. It can't be emphasized enough how important it is that a mezuzah should be purchased only from a reputable seller. I would highly advise against purchasing a mezuzah online or from an unknown source. In my experience, many mezuzot sold today do not conform to the kosher standards. Some of them are even printed on paper instead of parchment — essentially making them fake mezuzot! Weather conditions can also effect the Mezuzah, causing even good Mezuzahs, to become unkosher. Especially here in South Florida, where there is so much humidity, it is very common for the scrolls to often need to be replaced. Although we have no financial benefit from bringing down the Sofer, we will gladly help cover the expenses of the checking, for whomever needs. If anyone needs a Mezuzah and can’t afford to pay or would like to make a payment plan, feel free to contact my office and we will help you arrange that. Another great community resource is the Mezuzah Club ( http://www.mezuzahclub.org ), where they will happily give a Mezuzah to any Jewish student that needs one for their dorm room. For more information about the Mezuzah or directions on how to hang it in your home or business, visit https://www.chabadchayil.org/library/article_cdo/aid/278476/jewish/Mezuzah.htm. You can get certified kosher Mezuzahs or Tefillin at the Chabad Chayil front desk. For help installing your Mezuzah, simply contact your local Chabad rabbi or call (305) 770-1919 and we'll either help you get in touch with your local Chabad or send someone to help you place them properly. • Broward County Transit 2025 Bus Safety Roadeo: A Celebration Of Community And Skill At This Family-Friendly Event

Broward County Transit 2025 Bus Safety Roadeo: A Celebration Of Community And Skill At This Family-Friendly Event February 6, 2025 Share This past Sunday, Broward County Transit (BCT) held the 2025 Bus Safety Roadeo, the exciting event celebrated the dedication and skill of BCT's bus operators and maintenance technicians. This year's Roadeo took place at the Amerant Bank Arena Park and Ride, marking the first time this event was open to the public. A highlight of the day was the live bus operator competition showcasing driving precision and safety skills. BCT's highly skilled bus operators navigated many challenging obstacle courses. The Roadeo course was designed to test every aspect of operation that a Bus Operator may encounter in daily driving situations. The course contained 11 obstacles that test a driver’s ability to negotiate: • Left Turn • Right Turn • Passenger Stops • Overall Judgement situations Each obstacle was assigned a specific point total, and a missed or imperfect operation of a maneuver resulted in points being deducted from this total. During the contestants’ time on the course, a judge also evaluated their safety habits (25 points). This included use of: • Turn Signals • Horn • Flashers • Mirrors • Hands • Feet • Overall posture The contestant was also judged on other factors: • Their ability to deliver a smooth ride. This includes when they are stopping, turning and starting. (25 points) • Professional appearance, including their uniform (50 points) • A penalty of 1 point per second for every second over a 7 minute running time. OBSTACLES: OBSTACLE 1: SERPENTINE PROBLEM - This maneuver tests a driver’s ability to negotiate tight turns. The driver is required to enter a gate, weave in and out through three cones, and exit through another gate. OBSTACLE 2: OFFSET STREET - In this maneuver the driver is required to drive through the separate narrow lanes that are offset one full lane’s width from each other. OBSTACLE 3: 1ST PASSENGER STOP - The driver makes a maneuver at a bus stop made of simulated curbing. To make the bus stop properly, the front tires of the bus must be six inches or less from the curb while the rear tires are 15 inches or less. The stop must be made without touching the curb with the tires. The operator must also announce the stop to his onboard passengers as he/she pulls in. OBSTACLE 4: RIGHT HAND REVERSE - This maneuver is designed to simulate a bus turn around, requiring a bus to back up to the right and is scored identically to the left hand reverse. OBSTACLE 5: LEFT TURN PROBLEM - This maneuver tests a driver’s ability to make a tight left turn in a close situation. The driver is required to swing the bus into a 90 degree turn and not touch any of the cones outlining the problem even though he/she will lose sight of some of the cones. OBSTACLE 6: REAR DUALS CLEARANCE - This is an obstacle where the driver must drive through a lane with his or her right dual tires. The lane is only slightly wider than the total outside width of the pair of rear duals and is marked by rows of tennis balls. OBSTACLE 7: 2ND PASSENGER STOP - The driver makes a maneuver at a bus stop made of simulated curbing. To make the bus stop properly, the front tires of the bus must be six inches or less from the curb while the rear tires are 15 inches or less. The stop must be made without touching the curb with the tires. The operator must also announce the stop to their onboard passengers as he/she pulls in. This stop is scored identically to the first passenger stop. OBSTACLE 8: RIGHT TURN PROBLEM - This maneuver tests a driver’s ability to negotiate a tight 90 degree turn. The corner is marked with cones and the rear tire of the bus must pass within six inches of the corner. OBSTACLE 9: LEFT HAND REVERSE - This maneuver is designed to simulate a bus turn around, requiring a bus to back up to the left. It measures a driver’s skill, accuracy, and safety consciousness when backing up a bus. The bus must stop within 36 inches of a rear cone without touching the cone. OBSTACLE 10: DIMINISHING CLEARANCE - This is an obstacle that tests the driver’s ability to judge position and speed of the bus. The driver is required to drive through a narrowing V-shape channel outlined with barrels, while maintaining a minimum speed of 20 miles per hour. OBSTACLE 11: JUDGMENT STOP - This obstacle tests the driver’s ability to judge closing distances between the bus and a small object directly ahead. A cone is placed on the finish line and the bus must stop with the front bumper within six inches of the cone without hitting it. After the competition, an awards ceremony recognizing the top-performing operators was held. These top performers will advance to the Florida Triple Crown Roadeo in Gainesville. In addition to the competition there were family-friendly activities, including games, crafts, giveaways, and food trucks offering a variety of delicious options, plus live entertainment featuring a live DJ and Mariachi Band!
