  • Be a Savvier Shopper: A Buying Strategy Can Reduce Prices Dramatically

Be a Savvier Shopper: A Buying Strategy Can Reduce Prices Dramatically July 28, 2022 Share Whether you're shopping online or in-store, you can ensure you're getting the most for your money with a little extra planning. These savvy shopping tips can help you score the most savings and added benefits while you're at it. Time Your Purchase Before any big purchase, spend time researching the product and retailers to find potential upcoming sales or promotions. Also be conscious of the calendar and holidays or gift-giving events that might prompt special offers on an item you're looking to buy. Another smart strategy: shopping end-of-season sales when items are marked down to make way for new inventory. Use Digital Shopping Tools You may be leery of signing up for promotional emails but remember - it's only junk mail if it isn't useful. Putting your name on mailing lists of your favorite retailers and brands is a good way to get early or exclusive access to special offers and coupons. Downloadable browser extensions and plug-ins are other cost-saving tools that are increasingly popular. When you're shopping with one or more of these tools installed, your browser automatically checks for coupons or price comparisons that allow you to get the best available deal. This browser extension will automatically apply coupon codes for free: https://capitaloneshopping.com Shop Refurbished Whether it be for savings or sustainability (or both) refurbished products are a top choice among savvy shoppers. An option like eBay Refurbished delivers quality, like-new products at deep discounts from premium brands that are thoroughly vetted to meet high performance standards. You can shop across multiple condition grades and a wide range of price points within categories like tablets, smartwatches, laptops, desktops and smartphones - giving you more choice and the reassurance of buying a product that fits your specific needs and budget. Score big savings on trusted refurbished products at https://www.ebay.com/b/eBay-Refurbished/bn_7040708936 Save on Shipping When you're researching an online purchase and comparing prices, be sure to factor shipping into your total cost. Many retailers offer free shipping once you spend a certain amount, extend free shipping to preferred shoppers or offer periodic shipping promotions, so it's worth exploring the options. Also beware that buying items on sale can drop you below free shipping minimums, so ultimately you pay more than you would have by paying full price. In some cases, you can also save money by having an item shipped to the local brick-and-mortar store and picking it up there. Take Advantage of Benefits Understanding the terms of your purchase can help protect you if there's a problem and may even allow you to take advantage of special rewards. Before finalizing a transaction, check into the warranty options. Even refurbished products can come with warranties for a specified time. For example, all eBay Refurbished products are backed by one- or two-year warranties. For new items, some retailers offer the option to extend your warranty beyond what the manufacturer provides. In addition, some retailers offer money back incentives on certain purchases or allow you to accumulate rewards for discounts on future purchases. With inflation and scarcity issues remaining top of mind for consumers, shopping refurbished provides another option to buy in-demand products. In addition to value and availability, sustainability is another motivator for purchasing like-new. Shopping for refurbished goods, extends the life of the product and reduces harmful waste. < Previous News Next News >

  • Gulfstream Academy Rain Garden

Gulfstream Academy Rain Garden By Stephen Cummings October 28, 2021 Share Hallandale Beach Organizations Working Side By Side Gulfstream Academy has been the recipient of a beautiful new landscape in the front of the school filled with Bahama Cassia plants that will attract butterflies punctuated with pulchritudinous shrubbery through the volunteer efforts of several organizations and volunteers. Volunteers planted a large variety of native plants including firebush, coontie, swamp lily, beautyberry and wild coffee. Jonathan Carrillo, Program Director for the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League garnered grant money from National P.A.L., the Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach and the city’s Rain Garden Rebate Program by creating a picturesque panorama. A rain garden was created capturing the rainwater from the school’s roof and filtering it through the layers of plant roots and rocks on the way to the aquifer. Rain gardens can help reduce flooding and support wildlife. A project of this magnitude required professional supervision for excavation of the soil and the proper design and placement for the sparkling brush and Ron Rollins is credited as the landscape architect who is employed by Broward County. He was greatly assisted by Alyssa Jones Wood who is the LEED Green Associate for the Department Of Sustainability And Resiliency in Hallandale Beach and Rose Bechard Butman serves as the Naturescape Broward Outreach Coordinator. Additionally, Victor Suarez and Yasmin Laycee were hands-on during the two-day event. In a period where violence has permeated our local communities, children and adults throughout Hallandale Beach were galvanized working side by side for the benefit of a common goal. Volunteers who worked tirelessly included the Hallandale High School Key Club revitalized by their new faculty advisor, Haymara Font, the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League Leadership Academy mentored by Robert Flagg and the Hallandale Beach Teen Zone sponsored through our Parks and Recreation Department. The young adults were rewarded with lunch from Marco’s Pizza and Wingstop for their untiring efforts. A very special recognition to Munawear Ahmad Chaudhry and her group from the Baitul Naseer Mosque located at 208 Northwest 7th Court, Hallandale Beach, Florida 33009. They showed no hesitation to engage in the physical work of digging the soil and pushing the wheelbarrows. Munawar serves as the Ambassador for a Charity named: Humanity First linked with her Mosque that generously runs a Food Pantry that donates food on the last Sunday of each month. A modest accolade must go out to Hallandale Beach City Commissioner, Sabrina Javellana who demonstrated her passion for service knee deep in dirt working in the garden both days. Javellana has supported a vast number of charities and causes and constantly seeks agenda items that will benefit the residents of whom she proudly represents. Sabrina worked side by side with her dear friend and fellow Hallandale High School alumni, Noemi Lopez. Noemi is a recent honors graduate from the University of Tampa and works in the film industry behind the camera, but has been an indefatigable volunteer since she joined the key club at the age of 15. Hallandale Beach City Manager, Jeremy Earle stopped by to view the progress and ensured the success of the project by providing the necessary equipment needed from the City for its completion. Stop by Gulfstream Academy located in the southwest quadrant of Hallandale Beach located at 1000 Southwest 3rd Street, Hallandale Beach, Florida 33009 and view the magnificent collaborative efforts of men, women and children of all backgrounds beautifying their community and leaving them bursting with pride. < Previous News Next News >

  • Florida Communities Support Pro-Public Education School Board Candidates

Florida Communities Support Pro-Public Education School Board Candidates August 23, 2024 Share The Florida Education Association (FEA) and its locals have called to endorse pro-public education candidates for the August 20th Florida primary election that will help ensure Florida’s teachers, parents and students are heard. “Voters want to elect leaders who will ensure that every child in Florida has a free and world class public education,” said Andrew Spar, President of the Florida Education Association. “They are tired of hearing promises made to them about public education and then having to deal with the real life consequences of schools closing down in favor of exclusionary corporate schools, public school funds being siphoned away from our classrooms and students toward those same corporate run schools, teachers who are ranked #50 in the nation in average teacher pay, education staff professionals who are not paid enough to live where they work, and policies that force educators to spend more time figuring out laws instead of advocating for their students. We have seen how Governor DeSantis has focused on pouring political bias into school board races across the state, turning school board meetings into political debate stages instead of places where communities can focus on creating schools that allow our students to learn and grow. Teachers, parents, students and communities need more.” The FEA is dedicated to strengthening the professions and careers of our members. We endorse candidates who support policies that enhance public education, including fully funding our schools. We also endorse candidates who respect our union's right to collective bargaining, allowing teachers and education staff professionals to negotiate for better salaries and working conditions. Equally important, we endorse candidates who are committed to reducing the disparities in education. Additionally, we endorse candidates who prioritize the health and safety of our students, teachers, and staff. Having a safe school environment is paramount. The Florida Education Association makes candidate endorsements through a thorough process that includes research, local input, and democratic decision-making. This process ensures that our endorsements are based on education issues and a commitment to our neighborhood public schools, colleges, universities, students, and the people who work in public education. “Unlike the anti-public education politicians in Florida who are making endorsements based on what benefits them the most, the FEA and local union endorsements are nonpartisan,” said Spar. “Excellent public schools and supporting teachers, education staff professionals, and students can be achieved through bipartisan efforts. We don’t endorse candidates simply because they have an (R) or (D) next to their name but instead, endorse candidates who will champion our students and educators.” FEA and local union school board endorsements by county include: ALACHUA: Thomas Vu (District 2), Leanetta McNealy (District 4) BREVARD: John Thomas (District 3), Matt Susin (District 4) BROWARD: Debra Hixon (At-Large District), John Christopher Canter (District 1), Rebecca Lynne Larew Thompson (District 2), Sarah Margaret Kreuz Leonardi (District 3), Jeff Holness (District 5) CLAY: James "Jim" Hughes (District 2) COLLIER: Stephanie Lucarelli (District 2), Erick Carter (District 4) DUVAL: Nadine Ebri (District 1), Cindy Pearson (District 3), Hank Rogers (District 5), Sarah Mannion (District 7) HERNANDO: Kayce Hawkins (District 2; Elected without opposition), Gregg Laskoski (District 4) HILLSBOROUGH: Nadia Combs (District 1), Jessica Vaughn (District 3), Henry ‘Shake’ Washington (District 5), Lynn Gray and Johnny Bush (District 7) INDIAN RIVER: Peggy Jones (District 3), David Dyer (District 5) LEON: Rosanne Wood (District 2), Jeremy Rogers (District 4) MIAMI-DADE: Joe Geller (District 3), Maxeme "Max" Tuchman (District 7), Luisa Santos (District 9) MONROE: Yvette Mira-Talbott (District 2) ORANGE: Jake Petroski (District 4), Vicki-Elaine Felder (District 5, Elected without opposition), Stephanie Vanos (District 6), Melissa Mitchell Byrd (District 7, Elected without opposition) PALM BEACH: Matthew Jay Lane (District 1), Virginia Savietto (District 2, Elected without opposition), Mindy Koch (District 5) PINELLAS: Laura Hine (District 1), Eileen M. • Spotlight On The City Of Hollywood: Adopt A Catch Basin, The Alert Hollywood Service & A Free ArtsPark Concert

Spotlight On The City Of Hollywood: Adopt A Catch Basin, The Alert Hollywood Service & A Free ArtsPark Concert June 6, 2024 Share Now that we are in the rainy season, frequent heavy rainstorms increase the potential for localized flooding. City of Hollywood crews work to keep the more than 157 miles of underground storm system piping and 4900 catch basins clean. Residents can also do their part by pitching in to help control flooding in and around their neighborhood by adopting their own catch basin. The adoption is easy - just sign-up to adopt, take a look at the basin at least once a month and clean it as needed. Then submit proof of your efforts. In doing so, you can earn points for rewards for helping to prevent flooding and waterway pollution. Help to make a real difference in your neighborhood, sign up today: www.hollywoodfl.org/1460/Adopt-A-Catch-Basin-Program You can also reduce the amount of debris that flows into the storm drain system by throwing coconuts into your garbage cart for collection, and ensuring your lawn clippings and yard waste is properly disposed of. For catch basin issues in the City of Hollywood, please call the Underground Utilities Division at: (954) 921-3046. Flood Safety Tips • Call 911 if flood water impacts your home and creates an emergency situation such as a fire. Motorists should not attempt to drive through flooded areas. Remember, "Turn Around, Don't Drown." • Use caution with electrical appliances, electrical cords and outlets if floodwaters have entered your home. • Residents should not wade in standing flood water, which can contain contaminants. Following a heavy storm, sharp debris and other items from overturned garbage bins could be hidden in the water and cause injury. Standing water also may contain harmful bacteria that could cause infection. Children and pets should not be allowed to play in flood water. • Residents should prepare to notify their homeowner’s insurance providers if they experience flood damage and seek their advice on documenting the damage and drying out your home. The same applies for contacting your vehicle insurance provider if you find your vehicle has been damaged.
