All residents are invited to join us for a day of activities, entertainment, and a resource fair with over 40 government agencies and service providers. When I first met with the Police Activities League and Andre MacDonald of Advise Athletes we envisioned a celebration of the life of Alex “Budda” Collins who started his NFL career in HB PAL, a day of entertainment geared to unity and healing and a gathering of providers that can bring service to all our residents. We set off to plan an event with no funding and only the donation of a location granted by the city commission. We all have been working hard to plan a wonderful day of fun, food, and something for every resident just before the Super Bowl! The event will be FREE to the public. We will be kicking off with an entertainment lineup including Gospel Singer Annette Hall and three other national groups. There will be a special memorial for “Budda,” a DJ and special guest speakers will be participating throughout the event. A FREE tailgate lunch will be provided while supplies last. The CRA will be giving out our free trees as part of the city’s greening efforts. Inside we will have a free resource fair where residents will receive a passport. At each table participants will be checked in for a chance to win FREE raffle prizes Including a TV, show tickets, dinners, gift certificates and other free prizes. The next two years they will provide all types of partnerships which include Mental Health, jobs, housing, education and all quality-of-life issues. Many government agencies will be there including Hallandale Hepburn Center, Hallandale Beach CRA, Property Appraiser Office, Broward Housing Authority, Broward Housing Finance, and State Attorney. Broward County Environmental Services, the Supervisor of Elections, Hispanic Unity and other agencies. Many of our residents do not have the ability to speak directly to agencies due to transportation or simply must work during the week. This is your way to find out more. The following week PAL will be hosting the Annual Comedy Show at Gulfstream's Sport of Kings. This show is always an amazing evening filled with national comedians, buffet dinner and great auction to benefit our Police Activity League PAL. Individual tickets are $50 Dollars and there are other sponsorship opportunities. All the proceeds go to the many sports and initiatives for our local children. We hope that all our community partners and residents support our PAL. They are always looking for financial support but also volunteers. • FREE Microchips Available: This Could Mean The Difference For You & Your Pet

FREE Microchips Available: This Could Mean The Difference For You & Your Pet October 20, 2022 Share Thanks to a recent Grant from the ASPCA and Subaru, The Humane Society Of Broward County will be providing 200 FREE Microchips to pet owners who visit the shelter’s Vaccine Clinic and purchase a Vaccine Package. The clinic is located at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312. The hours are: Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. with no appointment necessary and it is closed daily from 11:40 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Thanks to technology, a Microchip is the size of a grain of rice and administered under the skin between a pet’s shoulder blades. When a Chip is properly registered it contains the owner’s contact information. Should your pet become lost and taken to a vet’s office or shelter, a scanner is used to see if the animal has a chip and then the owner can be contacted. It is important to understand that a Microchip is not a tracking device. It is also imperative that if you move or change your phone number, that you update the contact information with the Microchip Company. Microchipped pets are reunited with their owners frequently. In April 2019, a 2 1/2 year old German Shepherd named Cedar was reunited with her Southwest Ranches family after being stolen from her home at the age of four months. Found injured in a ditch by law enforcement in Colorado, Cedar was taken to a vet office where a Registered Chip was located by the scanner. She was flown home after she recovered. Should your pet become lost, a Microchip could mean the difference between being reunited quickly or waiting for days, weeks or months in a shelter, rescue or someone’s home hoping you will find your lost pet. According to the AVMA – American Veterinary Medical Association’s website, “A study of more than 7,700 stray animals at animal shelters showed that dogs without Microchips were returned to their owners 21.9% of the time, whereas Microchipped dogs were returned to their owners 52.2% of the time. Cats without Microchips were reunited with their owners only 1.8% of the time, whereas Microchipped cats went back home 38.5% of the time. Lord et al, JAVMA, July 15, 2009” For Microchipped animals that weren't returned to their owners, most of the time it was due to incorrect owner information or no owner information in the Microchip Registry Database – so don't forget to register and keep your information updated. Microchipping is crucial to your pet’s well-being. In addition, a collar and ID Tag are a visible sign of identification and should be kept on your pet at all times. That way, if your dog or cat wanders from home and is found, you can be reunited quickly. The Humane Society of Broward County is a private, Non-Profit Organization that is not affiliated with any national or local group with a similar name. The shelter’s programs and services are made possible by the generosity of those that want to make a difference for animals and people. • Sexy, Savvy 70-Year-Old: A New Kind of Hero for the Modern Era

Sexy, Savvy 70-Year-Old: A New Kind of Hero for the Modern Era January 26, 2024 Share Sexy, intelligent and resourceful septuagenarian Lori Brill finds herself caught in the web of a murder investigation during what should have been an enjoyable vacation in London to visit her granddaughter in the lively, award-winning mystery from Charlene Wexler, Murder Across the Ocean. As the story begins, Lori, a silver-haired spitfire long divorced from her alcoholic husband, enjoys an unexpected night of passion in a London hotel with old flame Josh Wheeler. Like Lori, Josh’s looks and appetite for adventure belie his 70-plus years, and Lori finds herself mesmerized by his blue eyes and sweet talk. Lori is all smiles as she steps out of the shower the next morning — until she sees his bloody corpse lying in the bed where they had just made love. The London police naturally suspect Lori, but the case becomes infinitely more complicated when it’s discovered that plenty of people have a motive to murder Josh. On the case is Scotland Yard Inspector Geoffrey Holmes, American FBI agent Jordan Gould, and Lori’s granddaughter Cate and her fiancé, Joseph, who both happen to be London solicitors. Sparks fly, as Cate and Jordan Gould experience a growing mutual attraction, as do Lori and Inspector Holmes. Adding another twist is that Lori’s family has an unforeseen connection to Joseph’s father, Lord Roger Lunt, and to the wealthy German nobleman Baron Joseph Braun and the horror of the Holocaust. So who killed Josh? Was it Josh’s beautiful girlfriend Suzi, who unexpectedly appears in London? Josh’s Chinese financial backers? British mobsters, who kidnap Lori in an attempt to find Josh’s hidden millions? Was it Baron Braun, who summons Lori to Germany to tell her a 70-year-old secret? Or was it someone else entirely? Murder Across the Ocean can be read as a standalone murder mystery or as the follow-up to Wexler’s book, Lori, the origin story of the plucky protagonist. “Lori Brill combines the unexpected smarts of Miss Marple; the genteel strength of character and family circle of Jessica Fletcher; and the hard-boiled sexiness of V.I. Warshawski,” Wexler said. “Readers who enjoy books about those characters will enjoy Murder Across the Ocean. Mature female readers, who have not yet found a hero who is like them, will at last have one in Lori Brill.” About the Author A native Chicagoan, Charlene Wexler has been a teacher, wife, dental office manager, mother and grandmother. In retirement, her lifelong passion for writing has led her to create several essays and novels. Her other books include Murder on Skid Row, Milk and Oranges, Lori and Elephants In The Room. Her newest books, Farewell To South Shore and We Won't Go Back, are scheduled for publication in 2024. Her work has also appeared in Chicago Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, The Northwest Herald, The JUF Magazine, the Gazette newspaper of Chicago, North Shore Magazine, the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry’s Vision magazine, Alpha Omegan magazine and several blogs. • Back-To-School Savings: Your Comprehensive Guide To Florida's Sales Tax Holidays

Back-To-School Savings: Your Comprehensive Guide To Florida's Sales Tax Holidays January 11, 2024 Share Florida gears up for an annual event that has become a crucial window of opportunity for savvy shoppers—the Back-To-School Sales Tax Holiday. These designated periods offer consumers the chance to snag essential items without shouldering the burden of Sales Tax, helping families save significantly on their Back-To-School Shopping. With the 2024 Tax Holiday currently underway until the 14th, here's everything you need to know to make the most of these advantageous periods. 1. What Items Qualify For Exemption?: During the Back-To-School Sales Tax Holiday 2024 starting on Monday, January 1st, 2024 and ending on Sunday, January 14th, 2024, specific categories of items enjoy Exemption from Sales Tax and these include: • Clothing, Footwear And Accessories: Priced at $100 or less Per Item. • School Supplies: With a Sales Price of $50 or less Per Item. • Learning Aids And Jigsaw Puzzles: Valued at $30 or less. • Personal Computers and Related Accessories: For Non-Commercial Home or Personal Use, up to $1,500 Per Item. • A comprehensive list of exempt items is provided by the Florida Department of Revenue including: Personal Computers, School Supplies like Pens and Notebooks, Clothing Items, and Learning Aids. For more items on the list, visit: www.floridarevenue.com 2. Exceptions To The Exemption: It's important to note that items exceeding the specified price limits will not qualify for the Tax Exemption. For instance, if a single item costs more than $100 for clothing or $50 for school supplies, it will not be eligible for the Tax-FREE Benefit. 3. No Limit On Quantity: Unlike some promotions that cap the number of discounted items, the Sales Tax Holiday Exemption is based on the sales price of each eligible item, not the quantity purchased. Shoppers can leverage this advantage without any restriction on the number of qualifying items. 4. Understanding Learning Aids: The term "Learning Aids" encompasses various Educational Tools, such as: Flashcards, Memory Games, Puzzle Books, Interactive Educational Toys and more. These aids, priced at $30 or less, fall under the Tax-Exempt category during the Sales Tax Holiday. 5. Items Not Covered: Certain items do not qualify for the Exemption, including: Clothing exceeding $100, School Supplies above $50, Learning Aids exceeding $30, Books not otherwise Exempt, Computers exceeding $1,500, items for Commercial Purposes, Rentals, and more. 6. Mixed Purchases: When purchasing a package containing both Taxable and Tax-Exempt Items, Sales Tax must be calculated on the entire package or set, even if it contains qualifying items. 7. Special Offers: Promotions like: "Buy One, Get One FREE" or "Buy One, Get One For A Reduced Price" cannot be averaged to meet Exemption Criteria. The total price of the items determines their Tax Status. 8. Online Purchases: Online Purchases qualify for Exemption if the order is accepted by the company during the Sales Tax Holidays, regardless of the delivery date. 9. Refunds For Tax Errors: In case a seller mistakenly charges Sales Tax for an Exempt Item, customers can request a refund from the selling dealer. If unresolved, reporting the issue to the Department of Revenue is an option. 10. Responsibility And Additional Information: The Florida Legislature establishes the Sales Tax Holidays and the items eligible for Exemption. For inquiries about specific items or additional information, consumers can contact the Florida Department of Revenue directly. The 2024 Florida Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday presents an excellent opportunity for consumers to save on essential purchases for the upcoming school year. By understanding the qualifying items, limitations, and terms of the Exemption, shoppers can make informed decisions to maximize their savings during these designated periods. For a comprehensive overview of all Tax Relief Holidays outlined by House Bill 7063, including their respective timeframes, consumers can refer to the Florida Department of Revenue's website for printable calendars and detailed information: www.floridarevenue.com Remember to plan ahead, make a list of necessities, and take advantage of this cost-saving opportunity. Considered one of the oldest living musicians who is still actively touring, recording and performing, Gaither, who turns 89 in March, says it’s that desire to spread the message of hope through music that keeps the Indiana native thriving. “The truth is,” Gaither says smiling, “I just love doing what I do, and I believe in the message in the songs. Songs like ‘we have this moment to hold in our hands…’ ‘because He lives I can face tomorrow…’ ‘I just feel like something good is about to happen…’ ‘Jesus only will never fail…’ ‘I’m gonna love like I’m leaving, give more than I’m receiving, laugh until it takes my breath away, say what needs saying, pray what needs praying, I’m gonna love like I’m leaving today…’ - those are pretty important messages. Each night we try to create moments that will allow our audience to walk away feeling differently than when they came. That’s why we continue to do what we do. I still love it!” Tickets for the 2025 LOVE LIKE I’M LEAVING Tour are on sale now. Make plans to join Bill Gaither & The Gaither Vocal Band in Tamarac at the Community Christian Church on Thursday, February 20th. This exciting evening begins at 7:00 p.m. To purchase tickets or obtain additional details, visit: www.gaither.com . < Previous News Next News >
