  • New Community Court Launched In The City Of Hollywood

New Community Court Launched In The City Of Hollywood April 25, 2024 Share Broward County’s newest Community Court has officially launched at The Caring Place - Broward Outreach Center in Hollywood. The 17th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida, in partnership with the City of Hollywood, spearheaded a community court location in the City to address Low-Level First Time and Repeat Misdemeanor and Municipal Ordinance Offenders. “This is the third community court now operating in Broward County,” says Chief Judge Jack Tuter. “The Court wishes to thank Mayor Levy and the Hollywood City Commission for their assistance in getting the Court off the ground.” Community Court participants will be held accountable for their conduct, via community service, while also receiving access to one-on-one assistance and referrals to available resources, therapies, and opportunities to help them. “When you are out on the street it’s hard to know what services are available to you, let alone how to gain access,” says Judge Corey Cawthon. “So, when individuals come here, they really are appreciative of the help they receive.” Community Court is a collaborative effort between the 17th Circuit, the City of Hollywood, Broward County, Broward County Clerk of Courts, the Law Office of the Public Defender, the Public Defender assigned to Hollywood, the Broward County State Attorney’s Office, Broward County Sheriff, and several service and treatment providers, including Henderson Behavioral Health, The Caring Place-Broward Outreach Center, TaskForce For Ending Homelessness, Memorial Healthcare System and James Club Recovery. “Community Court will play an important role in the City’s efforts to connect people experiencing homelessness with the services they need, while addressing the underlying issues,” says Ryon Coote, the Community Development Division Manager for the City of Hollywood. “I am grateful for the partnership that our Judicial Circuit has formed with us,” says Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy. “The Community Court will hold individuals accountable, but also will provide them with an opportunity to access the help they need to break the cycle and move forward to recovery and life off the street.” The initiative was funded by a 4-year, $532,305 Grant that was pursued and secured from the Community Courts Initiative of the U.S. Department of Justice, and would not be possible without the steadfast commitment of Broward Chief Judge Tuter, Judge Barner, Judge Cawthorn and the Hollywood Police Department to see it through. Since its inaugural session in January, the Community Court has already connected 73 people with the agencies that can help them. Each person’s progress is supervised by a case manager, who also oversees community service hour requirements. Ultimately, a graduation ceremony is held to provide the graduate with a deserving sense of accomplishment for their recovery. Hearings of the Community Court are held every Tuesday afternoon at The Caring Place’s Broward Outreach Center on Scott Street. “The Court thanks Judges Corey Cawthon, and Florence Barner for their service in getting this Court operational,” says Chief Judge Tuter. Community Court will be held every other Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at The Caring Place - Broward Outreach Center located at 2056 Scott Street, Hollywood, Florida 33020. • Shop With A Cop: The City Of Hallandale Beach Defines The Spirit Of A Community

Shop With A Cop: The City Of Hallandale Beach Defines The Spirit Of A Community Stephen Cummings December 29, 2022 Share As the holiday season approaches, the spirit of giving to those less fortunate than ourselves defines the spirit of a community. The Hallandale Beach Police Department in conjunction with the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League brightened the lives of 110 deserving children showering them with gifts and encouragement building gingerbread houses together celebrating the annual tradition of Shop With A Cop. Foster Park has become the newest venue for the Police Athletic League hosting their various programs and PAL Program Director, Jonathan Carrillo decorated the facility with great assistance from Laqueshia Brinson and fellow staff members from Gulfstream Academy reflecting a scene from a winter wonderland. The children were chosen by the Police Department and the schools as each child created a wish list for Santa Claus and the presents were purchased at a local Walmart. Carrillo is grateful to the lead sponsors for their continued generosity who include Harry Escandon from Crosstown Towing and Recovery and David Burton who serves as the fundraising chair for the PAL as well the Windhover Foundation with Richard Quadracci. Also, this event is made possible by local Attorneys Robert and Stephanie Fehnstersheib, AIG Technologies, Page Properties LLC. and Kiwanis Member Stephen Cummings. Prior to Santa delivering the gifts to the anxious children, Ricardo Mendez, Director Of Community Relations for Chick Fil A ensured that all the guests and volunteers were well fed with chicken sandwiches, chips, cookies and juice packs. Mendez has been a huge supporter of the Police Athletic League often providing complimentary food. Shop With A Cop takes place in several communities, but none to my memory serve as many needy kids as in Hallandale Beach. This program was implemented in Hallandale Beach in the late nineties and often took place inside Walmart, but Jonathan Carrillo has slightly redesigned the program since the wave of COVID-19 swept the nation. Hallandale Beach Police Chief Michel Michel, a twenty year Veteran of the Police force proudly watched scores of officers volunteer their time sitting with the children making the gingerbread houses presenting themselves in a very positive fashion. The reality is that we usually see police officers when we are in trouble or receiving a traffic citation, but they relish the opportunity to perform community service with our youth. The world has been plagued by the rising costs of goods and services due to inflation, but the City of Hallandale Beach rallies each year ensuring smiles and laughter to those children who are selected to participate in this altruistic program. Stephen Cummings is a Past LT. Governor with Kiwanis International and can be reached at: (954) 907-2392. < Previous News Next News >

  • State Of The City Of Hallandale Beach, Part 8 | sun-times

State Of The City Of Hallandale Beach, Part 8 By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper Jul 23, 2025 Both Safe Neighborhood Districts Are Looking To Enhance Safety And Security. The Three Islands Plan Has Been Approved, Just This Past Month We Have Established A Funding Plan To Pay For Over $4.2 Million In Roadway Safety Improvements. We are applying for a loan to be paid back over five years. Every property owner will pay a yearly flat assessment. There is an exemption provision for those currently on the tax roll listed for disabilities, Veterans, and homestead seniors, 65 with limited incomes. Construction should begin within the year so long as the underground improvements are completed. The lift station project on Parkview will not delay the construction as it is not directly done in the right way. Golden Isles will be planning for over $15 Million in improvements. We will be addressing that financing in the coming months. There is still major underground work for Holiday Drive so improvement will begin after that project. We are planning to replace all the guard arms due to damage and age. Operational changes at the guardhouse were adopted to enhance security after extensive research by our City Attorney. All visitors entering the guard gate will need to produce IDs. This will address residential concerns over recent car thefts and attempted thefts. While the Business Survey is underway some results have come in and it is no surprise Traffic has remained a top issue for business as well as residents. Since I have owned property and moved to Florida full time. I hear people complaining about traffic. Traffic congestion is a huge reality in South Florida. We are the fifth ranked area for traffic congestion according to U.S. World Reports, we have joined Chicago and others to being above the Pre-COVID-19 Pandemic numbers. So, what really can be done about traffic? Even if we had all the money to complete the $75 Million dollars worth of road projects, we like all communities, will not rid society of rush hour. We certainly can and will not stop trying to improve traffic flow and congestion, but there is not one silver bullet. We have conducted traffic studies over the years and are now in partnership with the Metropolitan Planning Organization to conduct an updated survey. As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org .
