Understanding Trauma Through Lived Experience Psychologist Turns Expertise Toward His Own Troubled History Aventura Digest Mar 19, 2025 As A Child Growing Up In Southern California, Trauma Was Woven Inextricably Into The Fabric Of Dr. Neal King’s Day-To-Day Life. Born Into A Profoundly Disturbed Family, King Experienced Various Forms Of Trauma, Including Sexual And Physical Abuse, Abandonment, And The Prevalence Of Addiction Among Family Members. These Early Experiences Left Indelible Marks On His Psyche, Influencing Not Only His Personal Life But Also His Professional Trajectory. As a child growing up in Southern California, trauma was woven inextricably into the fabric of Dr. He grew up to become a leader in international education, a Licensed Psychologist and Professor of Psychology, and eventually, the President of Antioch University Los Angeles. He has dedicated his life to deepening his understanding of trauma and aiding those with similar lived experiences. Now, in his deeply personal new book, Trauma is a Thief, King invites readers into his traumatic childhood, connecting the dots with as much candor, compassion and impartiality as he can summon to offer his own story as a “case study” for anyone else whose lives have been impacted by trauma. “Whatever its form or context, trauma is invariably a thief. It steals something essential from you that you can never fully recover,” King writes. Memoir-like but woven with professional insights from King’s own training and research as well as the wisdom of Carl Jung, Trauma is a Thief delves deeply into how King survived, the price he paid to survive, and how his trauma continues to live inside and inform him even today. “I have battled mightily to be here today to share this tale with you — in hopes that if you or someone you love has suffered their own trauma, my tale might render some comfort, serve as a resource, or help you feel seen and understood,” he writes. King’s new book is designed for fellow survivors of trauma, those who love them, and those who study and work with them. About the Author Dr. Neal King, a cisgender gay male, has served as Psychologist/Psychotherapist, Professor of Psychology, author, keynote speaker and college president in his professional life. He has worked with multiple survivors of trauma in his clinical practice. In Trauma is a Thief, he applies the same case study methodology he used in his dissertation at UC Berkeley to his own lived experience in a deeply disturbed family. King is recognized for his contributions to LGBTQ and general population trauma issues through his research and clinical work. He focuses on the psychological impacts of trauma both to the LGBTQ community and more broadly, including the effects of discrimination, violence and marginalization. An avid photographer who loves to travel, devour fiction and tend the roses, King lives with his partner of many years, Peter, in Southern California. - Why Are There CRAs? Part II - The Hallandale Beach CRA Was Established 28 Years Ago | sun-times
Why Are There CRAs? Part II - The Hallandale Beach CRA Was Established 28 Years Ago By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper May 1, 2025 In My Previous Article, I Began Explaining The History Of CRAs And Our CRA. The CRA Was Established 28 Years Ago, And We Had To Decide What To Do With It In Two Years. When I first was elected, I began to understand CRAs and believed in their mission. I explained by saying. “You can have a car but will not be able to go anywhere with a flat tire.” For years, the western part of our City was neglected and that was the target area of improvement. The combined revenues from the City, county, children services council and hospital district have been allocated to address the many needs. The questions became: What if the State passes the Bill to end CRAs by October? Is our work done? Should we continue with the CRA if the state keeps the law? Should we reduce the size? Should we totally sunset it? Should the city continue the programs? What would that look like? What programs would continue? To start, we need to look back on what we have done. Our City was developed parcel by parcel unlike communities today that are preplanned and built with all new Infrastructure. In addition, the area of the northwest that was segregated needed major investment. The parks were crumbling. The pool was closed and filled in. We had plenty of work to do. We had a long list, and these types of projects cost millions of dollars. When the CRA was first established the Base Revenues were a little over $1 Million. We began with a vision of improvements and addition to housing. We began to build a land bank and set aside parcels for affordable housing. We continued to work while the TIF increased bit by bit. By 2016, we had a robust plan to rebuild the three parks in the Northwest, OB Johnson, BF James and Foster. OB Johnson alone cost $14 Million. We borrow money based on a Revenue Bond. This is typically done with CRAs. Rebuilding on time and on Budget laid the groundwork for our citywide Parks Master Plan. This year the Base has grown to over $24 Million annually. The City’s contribution is $14.3 Million. This may sound like a tremendous amount, but projects cost millions of dollars. We paid back the CRA portion of the Revenue Bond and began to look to leverage future TIF. Over the years, we continued to plan many programs. We made an additional Revenue Bond of $20 Million five years ago. This has been utilized to build out all sidewalks and implement lighting throughout the CRA. We have built affordable housing units over the years. Partnered with developers to build market rate housing. I for one pushed for inclusionary zoning which would require a percentage of affordable units for years. This policy is now the norm not simply in Hallandale Beach, but is being implemented throughout the state. Five years ago, we set out to build 50 CRA owned affordable housing units. This was to address gentrification and persevere affordable units for the future. We have all watched Investors’ flipping homes and selling them for twice market rate. This is not bad from a Tax Revenue standpoint but it has priced many of our residents out of the market. To date we are up to 35. Other signature projects include a partnership with Gulfstream and Forest City to build the Village at Gulfstream. We also are building out District8, formerly Schmatta Row and The Fashion Art and Design District. We also continue to provide home improvement programs called Neighborhood Improvement Program, NIP. These include a shutter, window, roof and other improvements to update blighted housing. As mentioned, the life of the CRA as we know it will end in two years. The state every year for years has presented bills to kill CRAs. This year has been no different with a bill to require every CRA to end and have all money earmarked for projects or return to the other contributing tax agencies. So, we as a community have been faced with what to do with our CRA. In the short term and possible long-term depending on what happens in the state. So, what is the true benefit of the CRA if the city keeps it? In short, if it is kept we can enter into an agreement with the City to fund the trust and continue the CRA. The Revenue would be set in place and would have to be spent in the CRA for 10 years. If we do away with the CRA there is truly no guarantee money will be put aside for the programs many of our residents have utilized. The City held a two-hour meeting to debate the pros and cons of the CRA. Next week, I will share that outcome. As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org . - Hurricane Season Has Begun: 1-in-4 Floridians Would Ignore Hurricane Evacuation Warnings
Hurricane Season Has Begun: 1-in-4 Floridians Would Ignore Hurricane Evacuation Warnings June 16, 2022 Share The 2022 Hurricane Season officially began June 1st and runs through November 30th. Last week’s Storm should be a wake up call for all of us. According to NOAA Climate Prediction Center, the 2022 Season Outlook predicts above normal Hurricane Activity. For the 2022 Hurricane Season, NOAA is forecasting a likely range of 14 to 21 Named Storms with winds of 39 miles per hour or higher, of which 6 to 10 could become Hurricanes with winds of 74 miles per hour or higher, including 3 to 6 Major CAT 3, 4 or 5 Hurricanes with winds of 111 miles per hour or higher. NOAA provides these ranges with a 70% confidence. Regardless of how many Storms are predicted, we need to be prepared at all times for the possibility of a direct hit. Hurricane Preparedness for Condo Dwellers Living in an Apartment/Condo Community poses some unique considerations for Hurricane Preparedness. Sharing your walls and Communal Areas means some actions are your responsibilities, while others depend on your neighbors and management. The following tips will help Apartment Dwellers be prepared in case of a Storm. Storage space in Apartments is often limited and storing your supplies may be challenging. If your kitchen is small, find space in a closet, under the bed or even behind the couch. Fill bathtubs and the washer with water that can be used to flush down toilets and used for sanitation needs. Don't stand near windows during a storm and keep your curtains drawn. The National Hurricane Center advises against using tape since it can cause a false sense of security and also lead to larger, more dangerous shards of glass blowing through your Apartment. Pre-Register For Emergency Services (Broward) Register with Broward County's Vulnerable Population Registry, this is especially important because COVID-19 Infections are still on the rise. This Registry allows people who are Disabled, frail or have health issues to register in advance with their City so that Emergency Workers may plan a better response to vulnerable residents in a Recovery Effort following a Hurricane or Other Emergency. The Registry is not a guarantee of services, but it enables Emergency Workers to better respond in a Recovery Effort. Each City may use the Vulnerable Population Registry List in a different way, based on their City's Recovery Plans. For more information or to Register, Call: 3-1-1. Or: (954) 831-4000. Or Visit: https://webapps2.broward.org/VulnerableRegistry/Welcome.aspx. The Vulnerable Population Registry does not sign you up for a Special Needs Shelter or Evacuation Transportation. High Gas Prices are beginning to factor into Floridians’ hesitation to get out of harm’s way. Two-in-five Respondents (42%) say high prices and the availability of Gas would make them less willing to Evacuate their Home, if recommended to do so. “Prices at the pump are likely to remain high throughout the summer,” said Mark Jenkins, The Spokesman Of AAA Auto Club Group. “So, if you’re worried about Evacuation costs, it may be a good idea to start setting aside some money now.” Storm Strength, Pets and Property Damage A quarter of Floridians (25%) say they would ignore Evacuation Warnings altogether. Of those who would Evacuate, three-in-five (60%) would only leave for an approaching Category 3 Hurricane or stronger. Some of the top reasons people cited for staying home are: Being unable to bring their Pets or don’t have a safe option for them (30%), Don’t know where to go (28%), in case there’s Damage to their Home/Property that I can fix (25%) and Other Financial Reasons (e.g. can’t afford a Hotel – 23%). “Preparation is key to making sure you aren’t stuck in the path of a deadly storm,” Jenkins said. “Now is the time to develop a few options for your Pets. Keep in mind there are various Pet-Friendly Hotels and Shelters. If you’re worried about Property Damage, contact an Insurance Professional now to review your Policies. Having adequate Coverage will give you the peace of mind in knowing that anything Damaged while you’re gone can be repaired or replaced.” There are some things people can do right now to prepare for the Storm Season. If you have not taken steps to prepare your Household, now is the time to make sure you have a plan and build a Disaster Supply Kit. Consumers can purchase qualifying Disaster Preparedness Tax Exempt Supplies during the 2022 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday. Passed by the Florida Legislature and signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis, the Sales Tax Holiday began on Saturday, May 28th, 2022 and ends soon on Friday, June 10th, 2022. For a list of covered items, Please Visit: https://floridarevenue.com/disasterprep/Documents/2022DPposter11X17.pdf Review your Insurance Coverage Review your Homeowner’s Insurance with your Licensed Insurance Agent to determine if you have adequate Protection and remember to discuss your Deductibles. Flood Damage is not covered under your Homeowner’s Policy. “Unfortunately, many Homeowners do not realize until it’s too late that their Homeowner’s Policy does not cover Flooding,” Pintacuda said. “We encourage residents to look into a Flood Policy now. There’s a 30 day waiting period for all new Flood Insurance Policies. So if you wait until a Storm is approaching, it will be too late.” The two biggest sources of Hurricane Damage are Wind and Torrential Rain resulting in Flooding. Flooding is the number one Disaster in the United States. A quarter of Floridians (25%) are unaware that most Homeowner’s Insurance Policies do not cover Flood Damage. While 3-in-5 (61%) say they are concerned about experiencing a Flood at their Home, only 25% claim to have a Flood Insurance Policy. Every zone is a Flood Zone. Nearly 40% of all Flood Insurance Claims come from Homes which are not considered High-Risk Flood Zones. Flood losses are costly. One inch of water can cost $27,000 or more to repair. From 2015-2020, Flood Insurance Policyholders that sustained a Covered Flood Loss received an average Claim Payment of $68,000, which never has to be repaid. Federal Disaster Assistance is not compensation for your losses, it is a Low-Interest Loan. A ‘Preferred Risk’ Flood Insurance Policy can cost around a dollar a day for Coverage of $75,000 in Structural Damage and $30,000 for Damage to contents inside the Home, so it's a smart investment! Review your Auto Policy Do you have Comprehensive Coverage? Storm Damage to your car is not automatically covered by your Homeowner’s Insurance Policy. Comprehensive Coverage is not required in Florida, but would help if your vehicle is damaged by hail, is flooded, or a tree falls on it. Store Your Information Store your Insurance Policy Number and Claim Phone Number in your phone in case you need to make a Claim after the Storm. Also pack away Important Documents in a portable waterproof container. Documents could include: Birth Certificates, Social Security Cards, Insurance Policy Information and more. You should also document your belongings by walking through your home with a video camera or smartphone. Keep a record of large purchases including the cost of the item, purchase date and Model and Serial Numbers. Now is the time to start making preparations, not when a Storm approaches. Follow these simple tips and you will save yourself a lot of worry over the next six months. < Previous News Next News >

- King Mango Strut Kicks Off Countdown To 43rd Parade With Poster Unveiling | sun-times
King Mango Strut Kicks Off Countdown To 43rd Parade With Poster Unveiling South Florida Sun Times Oct 8, 2026 Another Wild, Wacky And, Yes, Weird Year Is Winding Down, And That Can Mean Only One Thing: It’s Time To Keep The Nut In Coconut Grove. The King Mango Strut launches the countdown to its 43rd parade with a free block party along the Fuller Street promenade Saturday, October 10th, 2026, where organizers will unveil DaveL’s official poster and the 2027 parade poster and theme. The King Mango Strut Poster and Theme Unveiling Block Party runs from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and offers the first glimpse of what’s in store for the self-proclaimed “Weirdest Parade in the Universe.” The Coconut Grove School of Rock opens the night at 6 p.m. Then comes the moment Strutters and King Mango fans have been waiting for: At 7:00 p.m., organizers reveal the 2027 theme and DaveL’s poster. Reggae-fusion-funk band The Chili Guys ends the evening from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The parade itself steps off Sunday, January 3rd, 2027, at 2:00 p.m. “The poster and theme unveiling is really where the King Mango Strut begins each year,” said Carl Levin, President of the King Mango Strut. “It’s the first chance for everyone to get a taste of what’s coming and to start thinking about all the wonderfully ridiculous material the past year has given us. More than anything, it’s a chance to bring people together in the heart of the Grove, have some fun, and officially kick off another season of Mango madness.” Where the Strut Begins For longtime Grovites, the unveiling means more than a new poster. It signals the start of another King Mango season and offers the first clue to the irreverence that will spill onto the streets in January. That’s when hundreds of Strutters turn the year’s headlines, personalities and absurdities into costumes, signs, performances, and decidedly unconventional parade entries. Predicting what will show up is nearly impossible. That’s part of the fun. Over the decades, audiences have met the Marching Freds, the Synchronized Briefcase Brigade, the Million Chad March, Weapons of Mass Distraction, and the “Running of the Bullshitters.” Each captured its moment in time, and with another headline-heavy year nearing its end, the 2027 parade should not lack for material. Decades of Mango Madness Coconut Grove is home to some of Miami’s most colorful outdoor traditions, from the Coconut Grove Arts Festival and Goombay Festival to the legendary Coconut Grove Bed Race. But the King Mango Strut occupies a particularly eccentric corner of Grove history. The Strut began more than four decades ago as a parody of the pomp surrounding the King Orange Jamboree Parade, the former Orange Bowl tradition. It has since grown into a beloved community institution without losing touch with its bohemian roots. “The Strut has always reflected the personality of Coconut Grove — creative, unconventional and never afraid to laugh at itself,” Levin said. “After more than four decades, people still come out because they never quite know what they’re going to see. We take the headlines and absurdities of the year, turn them upside down and have a good time with them. That spirit is what has kept the Strut going all these years.” Today, more than 10,000 spectators turn out to laugh, cheer, and dance along as Strutters poke fun at the year gone by. The parade remains free and open to all, whether watching from the curb or marching in it. The only requirements are an open mind and a willingness to laugh — occasionally at yourself. In Coconut Grove, even announcing a parade calls for a party. So what madness will the 2027 Strut bring? The first clue comes on Saturday, October 10th, 2026. About the King Mango Strut The King Mango Strut is a satirical parade through the streets of Coconut Grove that celebrates and skewers, what’s weird and wonderful about Miami and the year gone by. Born more than four decades ago as a parody of the former King Orange Jamboree Parade, the Strut has become one of Coconut Grove’s most distinctive community traditions. The 43rd King Mango Strut steps off Sunday, January 3rd, 2027, at 2:00 p.m. For information, visit: www.kingmangostrut.org . Previous Next

Emerging Nutritional Science Is Clear That What People Eat Doesn't Just Fuel The Body; It Shapes Memory, Mood And Cognitive Health. Among the foods you can include in your diet to give your brain a boost are peanuts and peanut butter, staples valued not only for their convenience but also for their cognitive benefits. It's not just the older generation that can benefit. According to research published in "Clinical Nutrition," a study of college students ages 18-33 showed consumption of peanuts and peanut butter was associated with improved memory function and decreased anxiety, depression and stress. Consider this key information from the Georgia Peanut Commission before your next meal planning session. Nutrients that Give the Brain a Boost Despite their small stature, peanuts pack a nutrition punch. Their unique blend of various vitamins, minerals and bioactive compounds includes: • Niacin, which can slow cognitive decline and reduce the risk for Alzheimer's Disease, according to the "Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry" • Vitamin E, found to promote healthy brain aging and delay cognitive decline • Resveratrol, believed to be beneficial in fighting against Alzheimer's Disease and other nerve degenerating diseases, per the "Journal of Biological Chemistry" • P-coumaric acid, an antioxidant that appears to target the neurotransmitters in the brain that regulate mood, stress and anxiety Peace of MIND Peanuts are included in the MIND diet, a combination of the Mediterranean and DASH diets, which specifically includes foods shown to benefit the brain. Adding peanuts to your menu can be a breeze. Look no further than a powerful main course like Crunchy and Creamy Cold Green Pea and Peanut Salad, a perfect accompaniment at potlucks and cookouts as an easy side or light main course. Make breakfast-on-the-go part of your daily commute with Flourless Blueberry Muffins that require just five ingredients, including creamy peanut butter, or add a pinch of protein to snack time with Protein Balls that can be refrigerated until hunger strikes. Brain Food for Thought Supporting your brain starts with the right nutrition, and evidence makes clear peanuts and peanut butter should be top-of-mind as you head to the grocery store. From elegant prix fixe brunches to relaxed, family-style feasts, Miami-Dade and Broward counties offer a diverse range of ways to celebrate. Whether you’re craving Mediterranean refinement, French café charm, or a lively beachfront brunch with bottomless cocktails, this guide highlights some of the most compelling destinations to gather, indulge, and toast the season. Miami-Dade Restaurants Rose Cafe & Restaurant: For those seeking a refined yet inviting Easter brunch, Rose Cafe & Restaurant delivers a thoughtfully curated Mediterranean-Italian experience in the heart of Sunny Isles Beach. On Easter Sunday, the restaurant transforms into a celebratory haven, offering a three-course prix fixe menu that feels both indulgent and seasonal. The meal begins with a choice of elegant starters. The Carpaccio di Tonno—delicate slices of fresh tuna accented with arugula, lemon zest, and capers—captures the lightness of spring, while the Asparagi alla Milanese pairs roasted asparagus with a perfectly poached egg and shaved Parmigiano Reggiano. For something richer, the Burrata e Pomodorini offers creamy indulgence balanced by roasted cherry tomatoes and basil. Main courses lean into tradition with a modern touch. The Tagliatelle al Ragu di Agnello features tender, slow-braised lamb woven into fresh pasta, while the Branzino al Forno delivers a clean, herbaceous seafood option. Dessert arrives in the form of a flawless Creme Brulee, its caramelized sugar shell cracking to reveal a silky custard beneath. With brunch served from morning through mid-afternoon, this is a destination for those who want their Easter to feel both leisurely and luxurious.
