  • Conspirators For The Constitution: When Anti-Government Speech Becomes Sedition

Conspirators For The Constitution: When Anti-Government Speech Becomes Sedition By John & Nisha Whitehead June 8, 2023 Share Let’s be clear about one thing: seditious conspiracy isn’t a real crime to anyone but the U.S. Government. To be convicted of seditious conspiracy, the charge levied against Stewart Rhodes who was sentenced to 18 years in prison for being the driving force behind the January 6th Capitol Riots, one doesn’t have to engage in violence against the government, vandalize government property, or even trespass on property that the government has declared off-limits to the general public. To be convicted of seditious conspiracy, one need only foment a revolution. This is not about whether Rhodes deserves such a hefty sentence. This is about the long-term ramifications of empowering the government to wage war on individuals whose political ideas and expression challenge the government’s power, reveal the government’s corruption, expose the government’s lies, and encourage the citizenry to push back against the government’s many injustices. This is about criminalizing political expression in thoughts, words and deeds. This is about how the government has used the events of January 6th in order to justify further power grabs and acquire more authoritarian emergency powers. This was never about so-called threats to democracy. In fact, the history of this nation is populated by individuals whose rhetoric was aimed at fomenting civil unrest and revolution. Indeed, by the government’s own definition, America’s founders were seditious conspirators based on the heavily charged rhetoric they used to birth the nation. Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, Marquis De Lafayette, and John Adams would certainly have been charged for suggesting that Americans should not only take up arms but be prepared to protect their liberties and defend themselves against the government should it violate their rights. Had America’s founders feared revolutionary words and ideas, there would have been no First Amendment, which protects the right to political expression, even if that expression is anti-government. No matter what one’s political persuasion might be, every American has a First Amendment right to protest government programs or policies with which they might disagree. The right to disagree with and speak out against the government is the quintessential freedom. Every individual has a right to speak truth to power—and foment change—using every nonviolent means available. Unfortunately, the government is increasingly losing its tolerance for anyone whose political views could be perceived as critical or “anti-government.” All of us are in danger. In recent years, the government has used the phrase “domestic terrorist” interchangeably with “anti-government,” “extremist” and “terrorist” to describe anyone who might fall somewhere on a very broad spectrum of viewpoints that could be considered “dangerous.” The ramifications are so far-reaching as to render almost every American with an opinion about the government or who knows someone with an opinion about the government an extremist in word, deed, thought or by association. Get ready for the next phase of the government’s war on thought crimes and truth-tellers. For years now, the government has used all of the weapons in its vast arsenal—surveillance, threat assessments, fusion centers, pre-crime programs, hate crime laws, militarized police, lockdowns, martial law, etc.—to target potential enemies of the state based on their ideologies, behaviors, affiliations and other characteristics that might be deemed suspicious or dangerous. For instance, if you believe in and exercise your rights under the Constitution (namely, your right to speak freely, worship freely, associate with like-minded individuals who share your political views, criticize the government, own a weapon, demand a warrant before being questioned or searched, or any other activity viewed as potentially anti-government, racist, bigoted, anarchic or sovereign), you could be at the top of the government’s terrorism watch list. Moreover, as a New York Times editorial warns, you may be an anti-government extremist (a.k.a. domestic terrorist) in the eyes of the police if you are afraid that the government is plotting to confiscate your firearms, if you believe the economy is about to collapse and the government will soon declare martial law, or if you display an unusual number of political and/or ideological bumper stickers on your car. According to one FBI report, you might also be classified as a domestic terrorism threat if you espouse conspiracy theories, especially if you “attempt to explain events or circumstances as the result of a group of actors working in secret to benefit themselves at the expense of others” and are “usually at odds with official or prevailing explanations of events.” In other words, if you dare to subscribe to any views that are contrary to the government’s, you might already be flagged as potentially anti-government in a government database somewhere—Main Core, for example—that identifies and tracks individuals who aren’t inclined to march in lockstep to the police state’s dictates. As The Intercept reported, the FBI, CIA, NSA and other government agencies have increasingly invested in corporate surveillance technologies that can mine constitutionally protected speech on the Social Media Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in order to identify potential extremists and predict who might engage in future acts of anti-government behavior. And then there is the treatment being meted out to those such as Julian Assange, for example, who blow the whistle on government misconduct that is within the public’s right to know. Since his April 2019 arrest, Assange has been locked up in a maximum-security British prison—in solitary confinement for up to 23 hours a day—pending extradition to the U.S., where if convicted, he could be sentenced to 175 years in prison. This is how the police state deals with those who challenge its chokehold on power. This is why the First Amendment is so critical. It gives the citizenry the right to speak freely, protest peacefully, expose government wrongdoing, and criticize the government without fear of arrest, isolation or any of the other punishments that have been meted out to whistleblowers. The challenge is holding the government accountable to obeying the law. Following the current trajectory, it won’t be long before anyone who believes in holding the government accountable is labeled an “extremist,” relegated to an underclass that doesn’t fit in, watched all the time, and rounded up when the government deems it necessary. We’re almost at that point now. Eventually, as I point out in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, we will all be seditious conspirators in the eyes of the government. We would do better to be conspirators for the Constitution starting right now. < Previous News Next News >

  • Ozempic & Surgeries: The Best Practices for Having Surgery While Taking New Weight Loss Drugs

Ozempic & Surgeries: The Best Practices for Having Surgery While Taking New Weight Loss Drugs July 25, 2024 Share Given that GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic are the latest major trend in clinical weight loss solutions, Dr. Bonati felt the need for his patients who take those drugs to understand how to approach surgical procedures. Dr. Bonati, a spine surgeon from Florida is offering his advice to those taking GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro who also need a surgical procedure. Right now, there are differing opinions on when or if patients taking GLP-1s should halt their use of the drugs before surgery. Typically, the evening before a surgery that requires general anesthesia, patients are instructed by their doctor not to eat, drink or take medications. That policy reduces the likelihood of aspiration while the patient is under general anesthesia, which can lead to choking and even death. However, explains Dr. Alfred Bonati, those taking GLP-1s should cease taking the drugs weeks before surgery, just to be safe. Since GLP-1s slow digestion to help the patient achieve weight loss, there may still be gastric contents in the stomach on the day of their surgery, putting them at risk for complications like the ones mentioned. According to the American Society of Anesthesiologists, people on Ozempic or other GLP-1 antagonists for Diabetes or weight management should stop taking the medications before elective surgery. “Extra weight puts pressure on the spine and could lead to more medical problems. But doctors have to be very careful with drugs like Ozempic, and should be advising patients to stop using the drug and others like it well before surgery,” said Dr. Bonati. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists—including Ozempic and Wegovy—may help people feel full longer and lose weight by delaying gastric emptying, meaning food will remain in the stomach for an extended period before digestion occurs. This slower digestion process can make one night of fasting too short a stretch to empty the stomach, leading to a riskier surgery. At the Bonati Spine Institute, this problem is alleviated due to the fact that Dr. Bonati does not use general anesthesia on his patients. Instead, he uses only a local anesthesia where the incisions for his minimally-invasive surgeries are made, and his patients are put under conscious IV sedation so they remain awake, conscious and communicative during the entire procedure. Dr. Bonati has completed nearly 80,000 surgical procedures using conscious IV sedation, and was the first spine surgeon in America to not use general anesthesia on his patients. Since Dr. Bonati’s success with conscious IV sedation, some other surgeons around the country have adopted that technique. “Ultimately, if you are taking a drug like Ozempic, you should be very cautious of being given general anesthesia during a surgical procedure,” he said. “At my practice and with my technique, we are fortunate to not have to worry about this issue. In many cases, people who are told by other doctors that they are too heavy to have surgery come to us because we don’t use general anesthesia. If that is your case, we would love for you to reach out before taking drastic measures like using GLP-1 drugs to lose weight rapidly so you can get the surgery you need.” For nearly 40 years, The Bonati Spine Institute, led by Dr. Alfred O. Bonati, has provided world class surgical treatment to patients suffering from spine pain. Dr. Bonati and his team of highly trained specialists have successfully performed nearly 80,000 patented procedures, helping patients with spine pathologies. While the Bonati Spine Institute is located in the Tampa Bay area, patients from all over the world have sought Dr. Bonati’s care, often after other doctors tried and failed to relieve their pain. Of those patients seen, 65 percent have had a history of failed back surgery prior to coming to the Bonati Spine Institute. The Bonati Spine Institute has received a patient-reported satisfaction rate of higher than 98 percent. < Previous News Next News >

  • April Is Stress Awareness Month: Six Stress Reduction Tips For Caregivers

April Is Stress Awareness Month: Six Stress Reduction Tips For Caregivers April 17, 2024 Share Stress doesn’t just affect your mood—it can have long-term health impacts as well if you don’t take steps to manage it constructively. For individuals who face the stressful task of caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s Disease or another Dementia-Related Illness, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is offering six stress reduction tips for caregivers as part of National Stress Awareness Month (April). “Family caregivers often find it challenging to make time for themselves, but being proactive about addressing caregiver Stress and self-care is not selfish; it’s essential and it benefits both the caregiver and the person for whom they are caring,” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services. “Failing to manage Stress increases the risks of caregiver burnout, Depression, and many other Mental and Physical Health Issues. Caregivers need to take care of themselves so they can provide the best possible care for their loved ones.” Family caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s and related Dementias are at greater risk for Anxiety, Depression, and poorer quality of life than caregivers of people with other conditions, and provide care for a longer duration of time, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). AFA offers these six Stress reduction tips for family caregivers: Be adaptable and positive. Your attitude influences stress levels for both you and the person you’re caring for. If you can “go with the flow,” and avoid fighting the current, that will help you both stay relaxed—conversely, becoming aggravated or agitated will increase the chances that your person will as well. Focus on how to adjust to the situation in a constructive way. Deal with what you can control. Some things are totally out of your control. What is in your power to control is how you respond and react to these outside factors. Concentrating on finding solutions can help make the problem itself a little less stressful. Set realistic goals and go slow. Everything cannot be resolved at once, nor does it need to be. Don’t hold yourself to unrealistic expectations. Prioritize, set practical goals, do your best to achieve them, and take things one day at a time. Mind your health. Inadequate rest, poor diet, and lack of exercise can all exacerbate Stress (and cause other health problems as well). As best you can, make it a priority to get sleep, eat right, drink plenty of water and find ways to be active. You cannot provide quality care to a loved one if you don’t take care of yourself. Clear and refresh your mind. Exercise, Yoga, Meditating, listening to music or even taking a few deep breaths can all help relax the mind and reduce Stress. Find something that works for you and do it regularly! Share your feelings. Disconnecting from your support structure and staying bottled-up increases Stress. Whether it’s with a loved one, trusted friend or a professional, don’t be reluctant to talk about your Stress, because that can actually help relieve it! AFA’s Helpline has licensed social workers available for caregivers seven days to provide support or even just listen. AFA’s Helpline, staffed entirely by licensed social workers who are specifically trained in Dementia Care, can provide additional information and support for families. The Helpline is available seven days a week by phone at: (866) 232-8484. By Text message at: (646) 586-5283. And Web Chat at: www.alzfdn.org . < Previous News Next News >

  • 8 Often Overlooked Playground Safety Errors Every Parent Should Know | sun-times

8 Often Overlooked Playground Safety Errors Every Parent Should Know South Florida Sun Times Apr 16, 2026 Playgrounds Are Where Childhood Memories Are Made, As They Are Where Kids Climb Higher, Run Faster, And Build Confidence Through Play. For Parents, They’re Also Places Of Constant Vigilance. While Most Caregivers Instinctively Watch For Obvious Dangers Like Tall Slides Or Roughhousing, Many Of The Most Common Playground Risks Come From Smaller, Easily Overlooked Details. The Good News? Preventing Injuries Doesn’t Require Hovering Or Limiting Fun. As the Chief Technology Officer at Rubberecycle Corporation (which offers top quality rubber surfacing products for playgrounds), I have seen firsthand how a few simple adjustments and a more intentional approach to supervision can go a long way. Here are eight often-missed playground safety errors and how to avoid them. Assuming All Playground Surfaces Are Safe Not all ground surfaces are created equal. Softer surfaces like rubber mulch and mats can cushion falls, while hard surfaces like concrete or packed dirt don’t provide adequate shock absorption during falls and can increase the risk of serious injury. So before your child starts playing, take a quick look at the ground beneath the equipment. Is it soft? Deep enough? Even a brief check can help you spot areas where falls could be more dangerous than they appear. Overlooking Equipment Temperature On sunny days, playground equipment (especially metal slides, swings, and climbing bars) can heat up quickly. What seems warm to an adult can be painfully hot for a child’s sensitive skin. Doing a simple “touch test” with your hand can prevent burns. If it’s too hot for you to comfortably hold, it’s too hot for your child to use. This quick habit is especially important during spring and summer afternoons or in direct sunlight. Ignoring Age-Appropriate Designations Most modern playgrounds are thoughtfully designed with separate areas for different age groups, typically 2 to 5 and 5 to 12. These distinctions aren’t arbitrary; they reflect differences in physical ability, coordination, and risk level. Letting a younger child play on equipment intended for older kids increases the chance of falls and injuries. So whenever possible, guide your child toward spaces designed for their age and developmental stage. Not Checking for Loose or Damaged Equipment Playgrounds endure constant use and exposure to the elements, which means wear and tear is inevitable. Loose chains, rusted bolts, cracked plastic, or splintered wood can pose serious risks, but they’re often subtle and easy to miss. So take a few seconds to scan the equipment before your child dives in. If something looks unstable or broken, it’s best to steer them elsewhere and report the issue if possible. Letting Kids Wear Unsafe Clothing or Accessories What your child wears to the playground matters more than you might think. Loose drawstrings, scarves, necklaces, or even bike helmets can get caught on equipment, which can create a risk of strangulation or injury. Opt for well-fitting clothing without dangling elements, and remove accessories before playtime. It’s a small step that can prevent rare but serious accidents. Failing to Supervise Strategically Being at the playground isn’t the same as actively supervising. It’s easy to get distracted by a phone, a conversation, or even just the mental break of sitting down. However, those moments can delay your response when something goes wrong. So position yourself where you can clearly see your child at all times, especially if the playground has multiple structures or blind spots. Strategic supervision doesn’t mean constant hovering; it means being ready and aware. Overcrowding and Poor Timing Choices A packed playground might seem like a sign of a great spot. However, it also increases the likelihood of collisions, falls, and overwhelmed kids. Busy environments can make it harder for children to navigate equipment safely and for parents to keep track of them. If possible, aim for off-peak times like early mornings or weekday afternoons. A less crowded playground often means a safer (and more enjoyable) experience for everyone. Skipping Basic Hygiene Practices Playgrounds are shared spaces, which means germs are part of the environment. Kids touch surfaces, climb, slide, and then often go straight to eating snacks without washing their hands. Bringing hand sanitizer or wipes and encouraging a quick clean-up after play can reduce exposure to bacteria and viruses. This simple habit will support overall health without interrupting the fun. Safer Play Starts with Smarter Awareness! Playgrounds are essential spaces for children’s physical, social, and emotional development. They encourage movement, creativity, and independence in ways few other environments can. While no playground is completely risk-free, most injuries are preventable with a bit of awareness. By paying attention to often-overlooked details, parents can help create a safer play experience without taking away the joy of exploration. Ultimately, playground safety is all about giving kids the freedom to play confidently, with the right amount of care behind the scenes. Sheryl Berkley is the Chief Technology Officer at Rubberecycle Corporation, a leader in top quality rubber surfacing products for playgrounds and commercial establishments since 1996. The company specializes in impact-absorbing playground mulch, tiles, and poured-in-place surfacing.. A playground safety expert, Sheryl educates the public on best practices for safe play environments, the benefits of sustainable surfacing materials, and strategies for preventing common injuries. • Property Insurance Going Up? 4-Point Inspections May Help Reduce Your Insurance Premiums

Property Insurance Going Up? 4-Point Inspections May Help Reduce Your Insurance Premiums By Christopher Carter - Real Estate Broker Associate November 9, 2023 Share Florida's Homeowners Insurance issues are well-known throughout our State and beyond. Coverage limitations, high premium costs, availability of basic coverage, and policy non-renewals are affecting property owners all across Florida. The contributing causes to this situation began decades ago, though are not the subject of this week's article. We will address those causes in an upcoming edition. Depending on the location and type of residence, property insurance coverage in Florida can include: • General Homeowners (Hazard, Liability) • Windstorm (Hurricane, Tropical Storm) • Flood (Rising Groundwater, Storm Surge) Anything a property owner can do to reduce exposure to hazards, damage, and deterioration has the potential to reduce premium amounts paid to the insurance company. This is known as mitigating risk, and should be a priority for all Florida property insurance policyholders. Today, we are discussing one of the best ways to evaluate exposure to some of the hazard damage areas that result in the most frequent insurance claims. Saving money on insurance premiums is always important, though not nearly as important as occupants finding and addressing property condition issues that can cause injury or health problems. The underlying purpose for Home Inspections and insurance 4-Points is to promote occupant/resident safety. A 4-Point insurance inspection is a look at the primary areas of a Single-Family Home acknowledged as having higher incidence of damage and insurance claims. When/if deficiencies are found in these 4 main areas of concern, they can be addressed by the property owner and brought up to the insurance company's condition standards for underwriting a Homeowners policy. The specific areas of inspection for an insurance 4-Point are: Roof, Electrical, HVAC & Plumbing. 4-Points are performed by licensed Home Inspectors, Contractors, or Building Code Inspectors, limited to visual inspection of these 4 specific areas and systems. They are not the same as complete Home Inspections which all buyers should have performed within the purchase contract's Due Diligence period. The newer a house is, the less time has gone by for parts of it to deteriorate, break, or wear out. Plus - more recent building codes tend to have stronger standards than older codes, which is why 4-Points are required for older homes, and why newer houses are usually less expensive to insure than older ones. For houses constructed 20+ years ago, insurance companies require the new property owners to have an independent 4-Point inspection performed before issuing a new Homeowners insurance policy. They could also ask for one at policy renewal in order for property condition information on an older home to be as current as possible. Having one performed can also be a good idea for owners thinking about selling their Single-Family Homes. The next owner will also need to insure the property, and providing a pre-listing 4-Point can greatly increase potential buyers' comfort levels when thinking about making an offer. Florida's ongoing property insurance concerns have caused most buyers to include insurance availability and premium cost as important parts of their pre-purchase Due Diligence. Without a 4-Point inspection, insurance companies assume that a given Single-Family Home has full exposure to hazards and damage, which usually means a full-price premium or in some cases declining to write coverage at all. This is because the actual condition of higher-risk parts of the property is unknown. Once the 4 primary systems and components in the property are inspected for condition and applicable code compliance, insurers may adjust premiums and possibly apply discounts to reflect actual exposure and risk. Here are some examples of what inspectors look for in each of the 4 categories: Electrical: • Breaker Panel Condition & Amperage Capacity • Wiring - Type, Damage, Proper Grounding • Any Observed Deficiencies HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning): • Age • Proper Function • Working Condition Evaluation Plumbing: • Type & Condition Of Interior Pipes • Evidence Of Leaks • Connections To Fixtures & Appliances • Water Heater Location, Age, Pressure Relief Valve Roof: • Covering Material (Shingle, Tile, Metal) • Age, Estimated Remaining Useful Life • Visible Damage Or Deterioration, Evidence Of Leaks A written 4-Point report must include supporting photos with comments, observations, and descriptions by the inspector. It goes from the licensed inspector directly to the property insurance company, with a copy going to the buyer (new policy) or current homeowner (renewal). Because of the current state of property insurance in Florida, buyers of Single-Family Homes more than about 10 years old will likely need to have a 4-Point performed by a licensed inspector before their Homeowners insurance company will issue a policy. Even when not required by the company, it is strongly suggested in order to receive any possible adjustments or discounts to the premium. The cost for a 4-Point is most often paid by the buyer directly to the inspector or inspection company. For current homeowners, it is a very good idea to get in touch with your Homeowners insurance agent every couple of years to see if an updated 4-Point might help reduce your premiums. Especially after doing upgrades, repairs, and renovations, homeowners should talk with their agents to update what the company has on file. A new 4-Point may provide details the company needs to accurately calculate risk exposure and apply premium discounts. There is NO guarantee that a new 4-Point inspection will reduce your current property insurance premiums. Though keep in mind that when insurance companies don't have accurate, up-to-date information on file about a property's pre-claim condition, it can be much more difficult and time consuming for any future claims to be processed and paid. There we are - a brief overview of how 4-Point insurance inspections are used in Florida. If you are a potential buyer of a Single-Family Home more than about 10 years old, understand their value in helping you receive an accurate Homeowners Insurance premium quote. If you already own a Florida SFH, it may be a good idea to ask your insurance agent if having a fresh 4-Point performed on yours could have any effect on your premiums. Be ready to describe any updates, upgrades, and repairs you may have done in the past few years. Very closely related to 4-Points are Florida Wind Mitigation inspections. 4-Points and "Wind Mits" are usually performed at the same time. Look for an article on them in the near future. The City of Aventura, in partnership with the Aventura Police Department, is gearing up to host an exhilarating event that not only promotes safe cycling practices but also fosters a sense of camaraderie among its residents. The "Share the Road" bike safety and ride event is slated for Sunday, September 10th, 2023, at the picturesque Founders Park located at 3105 Northeast 190th Street, Aventura, Florida 33180 and promises a morning of education, engagement and of course, a thrilling bike ride. Pedaling Towards Safety Safety takes center stage as the cornerstone of this event. Starting at 9:00 a.m., attendees will have the opportunity to attend various bike safety presentations. These informative sessions, conducted by experts in the field, will equip participants with essential knowledge about navigating city streets on two wheels. The importance of helmet usage, proper signaling, and obeying traffic rules will be among the topics covered, ensuring that every cyclist is well-versed in the art of responsible biking. To further incentivize safety-conscious habits, a limited number of helmets and water bottles will be distributed to attendees before the commencement of the bike ride. This thoughtful gesture not only emphasizes the significance of helmet use but also encourages individuals to embrace hydration as an integral part of their cycling routine. Community Engagement And Interaction One of the most exciting aspects of the Share The Road Event is the unique opportunity it provides for the community to engage with Law Enforcement Officers. Attendees will be able to interact with Aventura's finest and pose questions regarding Bike Safety directly to those who uphold the rules of the road. This direct interaction humanizes the Officers and breaks down barriers, fostering a sense of partnership between the Police Force and the Community they serve. Adding an element of festivity to the affair, participants can look forward to chances to learn about their own bikes and bike safety. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bikes for the ride. Riders of all ages should be able to safely ride a bike on the road. Exploring Aventura On Two Wheels The highlight of the day arrives at 9:00 a.m. when members of the Aventura Police Department lead a Community Bike Ride through the heart of Aventura. Setting off from Founders Park, this ride promises to be both invigorating and illuminating. Residents will not only get to experience the thrill of cycling in unison with their neighbors but also learn firsthand the practicalities of Safe Biking on real roads. On the day The Aventura Police Department will offer road safety training for riders, allowing them to become accustomed to their own bikes' unique dynamics and controls. From Kids to Adults, riders of all ages are welcome, as long as they can confidently and safely pedal through the urban landscape. Beyond The Bike Ride The Share The Road Event serves as more than just a one-day affair. It's a window into the ongoing efforts of the City of Aventura to promote cycling as a sustainable and healthy means of Transportation. Representatives from the Aventura B-Cycle Program will be on hand to enlighten attendees about the City's Bike Share Program.
