  • The Mad Tea Party at WMODA

The Mad Tea Party at WMODA March 24, 2022 Share Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There was published 150 years ago as a sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. These fantastical stories by Lewis Carroll have inspired a pop-up exhibit within the Art of Tea at WMODA. Follow Alice down the rabbit hole and through the looking glass to meet some of the curious characters of Wonderland as seen through the eyes of famous pottery and porcelain artists. In the 19th century, the Jabberwock monster inspired Doulton’s Mark V. Marshall and Victorian tile artist, William de Morgan, was enthralled by the Dodo. Lewis Carroll reputedly introduced the extinct flightless bird into his story as a caricature of himself. The Ardmore Ceramic Art studio in South Africa made a Dodo teapot which would enhance any Mad Hatter’s tea party. It Is always 6 o’clock in Wonderland at the Hatter’s endless tea party with the March Hare who is equally mad. Novel and ingenious teapots are a feature of the Art of Tea exhibition and some of the craziest designs have been loaned to the Mad Tea Party exhibit by Dr. Unjeria Jackson, author of Teapots by Design. There are also tiny teapots, less than an inch tall, created by master potter Alex Meiklejohn and a miniature tea party presented by dollhouse designer Judith Rudin. Alice experiences extreme size distortions in Wonderland caused by a Drink Me potion and an Eat Me cake She also nibbles on a magic mushroom which makes her the right size to enter the magic garden where she meets the Queen of Hearts from a pack of playing cards. This formidable monarch orders executions at the slightest offense, shrieking “Off with their heads”. The playing card motifs inspired designs by the Moorcroft Pottery as well as the British porcelain artist David Burnham Smith. The Royal Doulton group portrayed many Wonderland characters in their popular collections of figures and character jugs. • Water Worries: The Dangers Of Dehydration In Pets | sun-times

Water Worries: The Dangers Of Dehydration In Pets Aventura Digest Jul 24, 2026 The Summer Heat Can Be Unrelenting, Sending Pets Who Usually Run Straight To Their Owners After Being Outside In Search Of Their Water Bowls Instead. Rehydrating After Playtime Is Important, So If A Pet Does Not Have Proper Access — Or A Desire To Seek Out — Water, Their Owner Must Step In Before Their Companion’s Health Is At Risk. Dr. Sarah Manning, a clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, provides insight on how to ensure pets maintain the proper level of hydration as the temperature continues to rise. Why Water Matters Hydration is a basic necessity for a pet’s daily well-being, with water intake playing an important role in bodily functions such as: • Digestion • Joint mobility • Organ function • Regulating body temperature However, the amount of water needed depends on the species and size of the animal. “A cat should drink about a cup of water per day,” Manning said. When considering dogs' year-round hydration needs, body shapes and sizes are factors that must be considered. “For dogs weighing less than 50 pounds, it is advised to intake up to 5 cups of water per day; dogs greater than 50 pounds need upwards of 10 cups per day,” Manning said. “However, when they start to get hot and exercise, they will need more water.” Owners must actively make hydration a priority, as the complications caused by dehydration can become life-threatening over time. Pets not properly hydrated, especially in the summer, are at risk for serious complications, including: • Heatstroke • Kidney failure • Neurological issues • Hypovolemic shock — a type of critical body state that occurs when the body loses too much fluid volume (like in severe dehydration or major blood loss), which can lead to organ failure Signs of Dehydration The key to detecting early signs of dehydration resides in a pet’s mouth. “You can check their mucus membrane — the pink tissue underneath their lips and over their teeth,” Manning said. “If it feels very sticky to the touch, that's a sign that they're getting a little dehydrated. You would hope that their gums would be really slick with saliva, but if it's dry and sticking to you, that's going to be a problem.” Another way you can check for dehydration is by gently pinching the skin on the back of their neck and lifting it up to create a tent-like shape. “In a well-hydrated animal, that skin tent should drop right back down,” Manning said. “In an animal that's starting to get dehydrated, it'll stay in place a little before it slowly starts to return down.” When dehydration becomes severe, owners may notice a decline in their pet’s overall well-being. “They may appear to not be feeling well,” Manning said. “They won't be as active and may not want to eat or drink.” Dental Disease, nausea, an unclean water bowl, Arthritis, or more serious illnesses could be additional explanations for a pet's avoidance to drinking water. Contacting a veterinarian when concerns arise is important to determine whether the issue is behavioral or related to an underlying problem. Methods To Help For pets who are picky or avoid daily hydration, Manning says there are strategies that can help. “Typically, owners choose to flavor the water or make the experience of drinking fun in some way,” Manning said. “One technique to flavor water is called ‘water baiting,’ which means adding a supplement to the water to encourage consumption. For example, owners can mix a tablespoon or two of wet food into the water to get their pet to drink more.” When “water baiting” is not feasible, engaging dogs with moving water can encourage them to drink. “Some dogs really like to play with the water hose, and inherently, when you're playing with the water hose, they're going to drink some of the water at the same time,” Manning said. Cats, on the other hand, can be more particular. “Some cats prefer water that's in a nice big bowl; some cats prefer water that's moving — such as from a fountain," Manning said. “So, having different types of water out and available for them is the key.” Another way to increase hydration is through diet. Wet food contains more moisture and can boost overall water intake, though many animals have set preferences when it comes to a wet or dry food diet. “Dry foods don't have much moisture to them, whereas a large component of wet foods is water,” Manning said. “With that said, you can always add water to a dry food and that kibble will soak it up. With the cans of wet food, you can add additional water and make it more of a soup-type consistency.” Before choosing a hydration strategy, consult with a veterinarian to determine which option best serves your pet. Pinpointing Preferences Meeting the basic needs of a furry companion comes from taking the time to understand how they prefer to eat, drink, and play. “I think an owner’s mistakes with hydration can come from not recognizing preferences — at least with cats,” Manning said. “Dogs tend to be better drinkers on their own. In the sense of summertime activities and heat, though, we sometimes don't fully recognize that they might want to drink more.” With hydration — as well as any aspect of care — an owner should carefully monitor their pet’s well-being and intervene when necessary. “Some dogs might try to drink a lot of water all at once when they are dealing with heat stress and that can actually make them throw up, which makes them sicker,” Manning said. “Encouraging steady hydration throughout the day and being proactive with hydration measures are what's most important to prevent dehydration and further bodily harm.” Pet Talk is a service of the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Texas A&M University. • First Pancreas Transplant Program In Broward County: Simultaneous Transplantation Could Afford A Solution To Both Diabetes And Kidney Failure

First Pancreas Transplant Program In Broward County: Simultaneous Transplantation Could Afford A Solution To Both Diabetes And Kidney Failure May 11, 2023 Share Memorial Healthcare System has launched a new Pancreas Transplant Program, complementing Memorial Transplant Institute’s existing Pediatric and Adult Kidney and Heart Transplant Services. This new program is a significant step forward in the field of Organ Transplantation in Broward County, as it is the only one offering patients with Diabetes and other related conditions a chance at a new life with a healthy Pancreas. The Abdominal Transplant Program at Memorial is led by two renowned experts in the field: Dr. Basit Javaid, a Transplant Nephrologist with more than 25 years of experience Facilitating Transplantation with excellent Post-Transplant outcomes for patients, serves as Chief of Abdominal Transplant Medicine; and Dr. Seyed Ghasemian, who has more than 30 years of experience with Organ Transplantations, serves as Chief of The Abdominal Transplant Surgery Program. "With the addition of the Pancreas Transplant Program, we further enhance our reputation as a leading Transplant Center in the region, with the advanced expertise to take on the most complex cases," said Dr. Javaid. "Together, our Transplant Nephrologists, Surgeons, Nurse Coordinators, Dieticians, Social Workers, and other Healthcare Specialists are committed to ensuring positive outcomes for our patients." The Need Kidney Failure is a devastating condition that can have life-altering consequences for patients. Insulin-Dependent Diabetes is one of the leading causes of Kidney Failure, as high levels of Blood Sugar can damage the Kidneys over time. Patients experiencing Kidney Failure due to Insulin-Dependent Diabetes require specialized care and treatment to manage their condition effectively. One of the most common treatments for patients with Kidney Failure is Dialysis. Dialysis is a medical procedure that filters waste and excess fluids from the blood, replicating the function of healthy Kidneys. For patients with Insulin-Dependent Diabetes, Dialysis is a critical treatment option that can help manage their condition and prevent further damage to their Kidneys. Another important aspect of managing Kidney Failure in patients with Insulin-Dependent Diabetes is controlling Blood Sugar Levels. High Blood Sugar can exacerbate Kidney Damage and increase the risk of complications. Patients must work closely with their Healthcare Team to monitor their Blood Sugar Levels, adjust their Insulin Dosages, and make any necessary lifestyle changes to manage their condition effectively. Furthermore, patients with Kidney Failure may require additional Medical Interventions, such as transplantation. Patients experiencing Kidney Failure due to having Insulin-Dependent Diabetes could qualify for a simultaneous Pancreas and Kidney Transplant (SPK), affording a cure to both Diabetes and Kidney Failure. According to CDC estimates, of almost 130,000 persons in the US who initiated treatment for End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) in 2020, nearly 60,000 had Diabetes as the underlying cause of Kidney Failure. Some of these patients would be best suited for SPK Transplants. “Pancreas Transplants occur most often in conjunction with Kidney Transplants for patients who have Advanced Kidney Disease caused by Diabetes,” said Dr. Javaid. “A simultaneous Pancreas and Kidney Transplant will treat a patient’s Kidney Disease, freeing them from Dialysis, as well as the requirement for Blood Sugar monitoring and Insulin – a remarkable improvement in their quality of life.” Memorial’s Pancreas Transplant Program received approval from UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) in April 2023. "The launch of the Pancreas Transplant Program is an important milestone for Memorial Transplant Institute and its team of experts who continue to reach new heights for the benefit of their patients and families,” said Peter Powers, CEO of Memorial Regional Hospital, which houses the Institute. The Pancreas is a large Organ behind the Stomach that produces Insulin to regulate Blood Sugar and helps with Digestion. When it produces little or no Insulin, as is the case with people with Diabetes, the body can’t sustain its Blood Sugar in a normal range. Serious medical complications can occur, including Kidney Disease, Heart Attack, Stroke, and Premature Death. For more information, please call: (954) 265-7450. • ZOA Says Reject Nexstar Merger ─ Threatens Media Balance | sun-times

ZOA Says Reject Nexstar Merger ─ Threatens Media Balance Jewish Connection News Dec 18, 2025 The Zionist Organization Of America (ZOA), The Nation’s Oldest Pro-Israel Organization, Today Called On President Donald J. Trump, Members Of Congress, The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), And The Department Of Justice (DOJ) To Reject The Proposed Merger Between Nexstar Media Group And Tegna Inc. The merger would create the largest television station group in the United States, placing unprecedented control of local broadcast news in the hands of a single corporate entity and violating the media ownership cap established by federal law. Under current federal statute, Congress set a national television ownership cap of 39%, expressly to prevent a single company from dominating the local broadcast landscape. The proposed Nexstar-Tegna merger would have a reach of 80% ─ exceeding that limit by a substantial margin. Any approval of this transaction would constitute a clear violation of congressional intent and undermine the checks and balances designed to protect the mandate of the FCC: localism, diversity of viewpoints, and fair competition. “At a time when media bias is already undermining public trust, the last thing our nation needs is even greater consolidation of the television broadcast industry,” said Morton A. Klein, ZOA National President. Klein said: “Local news remains the most influential source of information for millions of Americans. Handing control of a vast portion of the nation’s local television stations to one politically powerful corporation—or a handful, including ABC, CBS, and NBC—poses a grave threat to the diversity of opinions essential in a free society.” Multiple studies confirm that Americans rely more on local television stations for news than on any other medium. Even as digital platforms expand, local TV remains the most trusted and widely accessed source of daily information, especially in regional and mid-sized markets. This makes local broadcasters uniquely powerful in shaping public opinion and civic engagement. Allowing Nexstar and Tegna to merge would give a single conglomerate extraordinary influence over community-level narratives, political coverage, and what information Americans receive about government policies, elections, and world events. ZOA warns that this merger would further diminish the diversity of perspectives available to the American public. “Democracy thrives when citizens hear many voices,” Klein added. “But if one corporation gains the ability to dictate news content across dozens of states, those voices risk becoming uniform and slanted. “This is particularly dangerous when national networks already display troubling biases, especially regarding Israel, the Middle East, and issues affecting the Jewish community. “ZOA stands firmly against any consolidation that could amplify these biases.” Beyond the severe implications for media plurality, ZOA also warns of significant economic harm to American consumers. Industry analysts predict that the merger would lead to substantial increases in retransmission fees—the payments that cable and satellite providers must make to broadcasters to carry local channels. These higher fees are inevitably passed on to subscribers in the form of higher monthly bills. “Higher cable and satellite bills are the last thing working families need in this economy,” Klein said. Klein noted that President Reagan created the TV ownership cap to protect against national media control and Congress deliberately imposed the 39% ownership cap to preserve localism. Local communities deserve news coverage that reflects local priorities rather than the political and economic interests of a single national corporate owner. “The FCC was created to protect local TV licenses, not to guarantee mega-corporations massive profits through consolidation,” Klein said. ZOA urges federal officials to reaffirm their commitment to a competitive, vibrant, and ideologically diverse media landscape. This requires strict adherence to congressional limits and robust antitrust enforcement by the DOJ and FCC. The ZOA respectfully calls on: • President Trump to publicly oppose the merger and support media diversity by re-affirming his support for the 39% cap. • Congress to demand enforcement of the 39% ownership cap and conduct hearings on the dangers of excessive broadcast consolidation. • The FCC to reject any waiver, reinterpretation, or circumvention of statutory ownership limits. • The DOJ to scrutinize the merger’s antitrust implications and block any transaction that threatens fair competition and consumer welfare. “ZOA stands for truth, fairness, and the protection of democratic values,” Klein said. “This merger endangers all three. America must not allow a single corporation to gain such sweeping control of the news that shapes our national conversation. For the sake of our democracy, this merger must be stopped.” Previous Next

See It, Be It And Do It: The Success Guidebook Opens The Door To Bold New Possibilities June 27, 2024 Share Most people don’t realize they are already wildly successful, says master life coach and bestselling Author Elizabeth Hamilton-Guarino. In her new book, The Success Guidebook: How to Visualize, Actualize, and Amplify You, Hamilton-Guarino helps readers redefine success for themselves — so it becomes meaningful to the individual. “It’s time to stop spinning your wheels and over-working for a fragile concept that feels unattainable,” Hamilton-Guarino wrote in the book’s introduction. “The Success Guidebook will help you stop feeling like you have to prove your worth to others or prove people wrong.” In her book, she shares 10 factors of success (they aren’t what you think) and weaves them with heartfelt experiences and strategies to help readers redefine success and manifest it in their own lives. “Your breakthrough to your best success happens when reality intersects with infinite possibilities,” she said. “When this happens in our real lives, the stars align. It’s time to redefine success for yourself personally and to pursue the life you want by also giving thought and attention comprehensively to various areas of your life, such as health or relationships, which suffer when attention is paid in such a focused manner to another area in the pursuit of ‘success.’” Hamilton-Guarino also believes that traditional measurements for success are unrealistic and largely unattainable. “This disconnect has created multiple issues on many fronts. Success isn’t one-size-fits-all. We need a new way forward: a new definition of success that is individualized,” she explained. “Imagine taking an express route to excellence and success by learning the art of comprehensive and well-rounded success. Here you have your best awareness for excelling in all areas of your life at a world class level.” By implementing Hamilton-Guarino’s unique Ten Factors of Success — the behaviors consistently exhibited by people who stand out and behave with world-class excellence — readers will learn how to finally overcome the stubborn obstacles that have stood in their way and harness the power to move forward with clarity, a renewed purpose and the personalized confidence to build a life of bold, brave and infinite possibilities. Included are profiles of 20 people who exemplify these principles, including Actress Rhys Olivia Cote; Georgetown University’s Head Baseball Coach, Edwin Thompson; Founder/CEO of Wedo.ai, Indiana Gregg; and Olympian Mitch Gaylord. “Here’s the secret: You don’t need to be on a national or international platform to be world-class,” Hamilton-Guarino added. “You can have it right in your own home, to be and feel successful in each and every moment of your life. This book will help you learn how to tap into world-class behaviors and get the results you desire — at last.” The Author In 2008, Elizabeth Hamilton-Guarino closed the door to her office to think about her life. • Sasa Italian Gourmet Opens in Downtown Hollywood on Harrison Street

Sasa Italian Gourmet Opens in Downtown Hollywood on Harrison Street May 30, 2024 Share He's lived in three countries and many cities. He's had multiple businesses, ranging from fashion boutiques to furniture manufacturers to restaurants, in even more cities. He's a businessman, an artist, and a risktaker, but Hollywood is the only place to which he has ever come back to reinvent a business and make it even better. He's Salvatore Savarese, better known as Sasa, the owner of the former eponymous restaurant located in a little house on South 20th Avenue at Van Buren Street. Now he's back with a newer, better version of the restaurant, Sasa Italian Gourmet, at 2000 Harrison Street #2 in Downtown Hollywood. Never one to repeat himself, though, Sasa (the man) has created the new Sasa (the shop), to be even more than its predecessor, with an Italian market in the front, and a bright, art-filled cafe in the back. There, he and his wife, Loiris Lakatos, sell the paninis, salads and Italian desserts for which the original restaurant is known, while in the market, they offer a unique variety of wines, cheeses, handmade pastas and flatbreads, and other items that cannot be found anywhere else nearby. "We started with a boutique on Hollywood Boulevard," recalled Sasa, who has been in the US for over 20 years. "Then we began looking for our next adventure, and my wife said 'Why don't we make a place for coffee and breakfast?' And then we found the charming little house where we began with coffee, then expanded with food. We were there for seven years but left when the house was sold. It took two years to find a new place." He continued, "I like a place with music. And, of course, if you are in Italy and you find a romantic restaurant, it's not only the food; it's the music, the atmosphere that makes you stay. It's beautiful this place where you spend one or two hours and relax; it's like being on vacation. I love this! This is my conception of a restaurant." That concept is evident at Sasa Italian Gourmet. In the cafe, Sasa serves a simple fare of paninis, salads, flatbreads, and Italian desserts. Favorites from the original location have returned, including the Sasa Appetizer ($21 per person, minimum 2 people). And for dessert, the Sasa Cake, the couple's unique creation of chocolate cake with classic Italian custard crema, orange, and Amaretto liquor ($8.50). "A lot of Amaretto," Lakatos added. "This one is not for kids." "And there is music," confirmed her husband. "No TV." The new part of the business, the market, sells a host of mostly Italian specialty products. "We have Italian mineral waters, and we chose the best wines from all over Europe and South America," Savarese explained. "They're not too expensive and not too cheap — we start at $20 and go up to $45 or $50 a bottle. "The food though, it's all Italian. 99.99% Italian. We have fresh mozzarella, ricotta, caciocavallo, pecorino Romano, we have parmesan. I buy all these fresh. "We have wine, we have cheese, and we have pasta, pasta, pasta. We have a dry pasta and fresh-made pasta. We have two types of flatbread. It's crispy, it's beautiful because it's not like normal flatbread — it's different and is a specialty from Roma." At the restaurant, as a painter, as a designer, Savarese puts all of himself into his work, and it's easy to see when you visit Sasa Italian Gourmet. "In any work in my life, my hand is my soul," he asserted. "At Sasa Italian Gourmet, my concept is Soul Amore. My concept is me giving you something special because it is something that I would make for myself." Sasa Italian Gourmet is open from 10 am to 6 pm, Monday to Thursday, 10 am to 8 pm on Friday and Saturday, and is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 754-800-5959 or email sasagourmetitaliano@gmail.com . You can also follow them on Facebook or Instagram @sasaitaliangourmet. Downtown Hollywood offers on-street metered parking for $1.50 per hour, as well as municipal garage parking for $1 per hour at 251 S. 20th Avenue (between Harrison Street and Van Buren Street). In addition, a $10 flat rate public valet station, located at 1925 Hollywood Boulevard, is open Thursday to Sunday, from 5 pm to 5 am.
