  • A Paw-sitive Impact: How Pets Enrich The Lives Of The Elderly | sun-times

A Paw-sitive Impact: How Pets Enrich The Lives Of The Elderly South Florida Sun Times Jun 19, 2025 The Number Of Adults Aged 65 And Older Is Growing, And Older Adults Are At Higher Risk For Social Isolation And Loneliness Due To Changes In Health And Social Connections That Can Come With Growing Older, According To The National Institute On Aging. The Companionship Of A Wagging Tail Or A Soft Purr, However, Can Enrich The Lives Of Older Adults. Dr. Erin Ray, a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, shares the physical and mental health benefits of older adults having a pet to walk by their side through their golden years. Four-Legged Therapists One of the benefits of investing in a companion animal, according to Ray, is that it offers an older population a renewed sense of purpose and responsibility in their daily lives. “Numerous studies have been conducted to assess the advantages of pet ownership,” Ray said. “Pet owners tend to be more physically active, have a reduced risk of Heart Disease, and engage in more social interactions with others due to their pets. Consequently, they often experience less loneliness and stress compared to people without pets.” Having a pet also provides structure to older owners’ days and keeps them busier as they establish and maintain their pet’s daily routine, including regular meals, walks, and play time. “This routine can provide a mutual benefit, improving physical activity, mental stimulation, and positive interactions for both the owner and their pet,” Ray said. In addition, pets help fulfill the emotional and caregiving instincts that many humans have, especially for those whose children no longer rely on them for constant care. “Getting out of bed, getting yourself dressed, and caring for the house and yard tend to be more important when another living creature is relying on you,” Ray said. “Also, pets are often very affectionate and can be great listeners, acting as a confidant for their owner.” Furry Friendships A perhaps unexpected consequence of pet ownership for older people is that a pet may bring them out into their neighborhood, attracting neighbors and friendly faces of all kinds, thereby alleviating isolation. “Older owners with pets are oftentimes more sociable within the neighborhood with both fellow pet owners and people without pets,” Ray said. “Pets often encourage people to step outside for walks or visit public places like dog parks, horse barns, and so on, where they can interact with other people.” Forming connections in the community becomes much easier with an adorable companion by your side, as people tend to be more comfortable talking to or about an animal rather than directly to a stranger. Ray also notes that these relationships can often lead to people performing favors for one another, such as house sitting or feeding a neighbor’s pet. This can effectively foster a support system from non-family members to become invested in the well-being of the older adult – especially when family is not nearby. Challenges And Considerations The greatest priority in older adult pet ownership is ensuring that the owner can properly care for the animal they are committing to. Specific challenges older pet owners may encounter include: • Difficulty administering medication for a pet’s chronic illness or other ailment. • Struggling to keep up with more active pets’ physical needs, like frequent walks, playing with toys, or horseback riding. • Getting pets to and from veterinary visits, traveling with owners, or finding care when leaving town. Ray also identifies behavioral challenges as another potential hurdle for older owners. Extreme co-dependence can lead to high cases of anxiety that can pose occasional dilemmas for an older owner. Finding The Paw-fect Match When an older adult is selecting the “purrfect” pet to match the specific needs in their life, there are several important factors to consider. For example, the size and type of pet is entirely dependent on the person. “Pets can range from horses, to dogs, to birds, to fish, and everything in between,” Ray said. “A few things owners should consider when choosing a companion are their lifestyle and personal physical abilities; the cost of ownership; and breed characteristics.” Much like searching for a best friend whose lifestyle aligns with their own, their next furry best friend should desire the day-to-day routine they are able to offer. “For example, owners who don't want to or are unable to go on hikes, runs, or long walks may avoid very athletic and high-energy dogs,” Ray said. Another consideration is being wary of pets that showcase signs of separation anxiety if the owner travels frequently and is unable to bring their nervous furry friend along for the ride. On a more serious note, older individuals who are more susceptible to Autoimmune risks should be cautious when choosing a fish, as some tank environments can carry the potential for disease transmission. A Lifelong Companion Investing in a furry friend can bring an immense amount of joy and companionship to an older person’s life, as long as the owner is capable of providing proper care. Family may play an important role in making this pet ownership possible if they are inclined to assist with the animal's care to help minimize the challenges experienced by the older owner. “Oftentimes, the benefits of pet ownership vastly outweigh the potential complications or hurdles for many older people for the right pet,” Ray said. “Ultimately, pet ownership can help an isolated person feel loved and appreciated.” Pet Talk is a service of the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Texas A&M University. • Transportation Of The Future | sun-times

Transportation Of The Future By Hallandale Beach, Mayor Joy Cooper May 14, 2026 Last Thursday, I Had The Privilege And Honor Of Celebrating The National Day Of Prayer Interfaith Breakfast. This Year’s Theme Was Peace For Every Generation In Unity. I Want To Thank Our City’s Faith Leaders Who Made It All Possible. Reverend Dr. Jennifer B. Reynolds Of Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Was This Year’s Gracious MC And Vocalist, Qunea Gordon Of Greater Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Reverend Dr. Anthony A. Sanders Of The Vision Center, Senator Shevrin Jones Of Koinonia Worship Center And Village, Imam MR Sarjeel Ahmed Of Our Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s Miami Chapter, Minister Glenda Henderson Of The Vision Center, Minister Shirley King Of The Vision Center And Founder Of Life On Power, And Dr. Deborah Brown Of The Gathering Of Warriors Fellowship And Zamar School Of Performing Arts. A Special Thanks To The Ministerial Alliance Of South Broward, PAL Of Hallandale Beach, Hallandale Beach Police Department And Rabbi Mordy Feiner Of The Chabad Of South Broward Who Has Been A Long Time Supporter. Miami was all about tech last week. It started with the e-Merge event, then Israel Tech week kicked off and CoMotion. I was able to attend CoMotion on Tuesday and Wednesday which was hosted at Wolfson Campus of Miami Dade College. Our Transportation Director Dr. Shen actually made a presentation of our Cloud Bus system. I was excited to research and connect with the many new alternative modes of transportation, EVTols, Wing and Waymo to name a few. With the adoption of enabling legislation on the national and most importantly state levels, Florida is poised to unleash this transformational wave of technology. Waymo is already on the road in Miami and Zook the new competitor can also be seen traveling on the roadways. Some readers may be unaware that currently the new Tesla’s already have the capability to drive without a driver. A driver can sit back and watch the car drive itself. I approached the representative of Waymo to inquire about a partnership. The new laws have made it much easier to enter into pilot programs. Aventura now has an agreement with Waymo through an FDOT Grant. Waymo shared that they have a goal to build out through the U.S. 1 Corridor. These driverless cars can address what transportation industry calls the last half mile. The micro transit can connect riders to fixed routes and mass transit. EvTols Electric vertical take off and landing aircrafts are currently being tested throughout the country. These manned drones are now being tested in NYC. Joby and Archer are the two companies that have been successful to date, bringing them to the market as a new wave helicopter. They are battery powered so they are much quieter than traditional with a target of 20 decimals. This level can be compared to the rustle of leave. I have been following this issue very closely as we look to redevelop our city hall into a complete civic center with a combination of multiple uses. Looking toward the future our City should be planning for this new mode of transit. Companies now are scouting locations for leases and storage. In our plan we know we need a parking garage. Sharing the garage with a lease could generate revenue. The next new wave of transportation is drone delivery. Wings, a company out of Texas has successfully partnered with Door Dash and Walmart. The system allows for delivery of items in a fraction of the time as you do not need to wait for a driver. The drone has a built-in hook system. The package is connected; the drone lifts off and is sent promptly to the delivery location. The drone does not land it actually drops the package down and the weight dislodges the package. I approached them at the conference to inquire about our Walmart. As fate would have it, they are looking to our Walmart to add Wing. I requested an agenda item to have discussions about the program and what steps we need to take by the City to implement Wings. While these are exciting times, changes of this nature can be daunting. The whole shift to the use of AI and these newer technologies is here and it is moving pretty fast. The FAA on the state and national levels are the main players when it comes to regulations. On the city side we need to ensure we are planning to integrate them properly. As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org . When properties are occupied, they are sanctuaries. When vacant, they are presented with the reverence of a private collection. The promise is simple: Protect what is precious—both the property and the people who inhabit it. Below, Mita Residential CEO Angel Sarmiento provides a deeper dive into what makes this luxury vacation villa rental company so extraordinary, as well as a spotlight look at one of the highly-popular properties in its portfolio. MK: For those unfamiliar with Mita Residential, what defines your brand and what makes it distinct in Mexico’s luxury villa market? AS: We offer Punta Mita’s most extensive collection of distinguished properties, with more than 120 residences representing the peninsula’s largest and most diverse portfolio. Our dedicated in-house team has spent two decades cultivating exclusive relationships and insider access throughout Mexico. Most vacation rental companies outsource services to third parties—we do not. Everything we offer, from chefs and yacht charters to helicopter transfers, is managed by our own trusted network. That allows us to deliver seamless, uncompromising service. MK: What has contributed to Punta Mita remaining one of the world’s most sought-after destinations for high-end travelers? AS: Safety and natural beauty, above all. Punta Mita is consistently rated the safest beach destination in Mexico, where mountain jungle meets the Pacific. Guests come for extraordinary golfing and surfing and stay for the food, with fresh local tuna, shrimp and red snapper often paired with what many tell us is the best margarita they have ever had. It helps that Punta Mita is only two hours from the town of Tequila, Jalisco. MK: Mita Residential is known for its highly-personalized concierge services. How do you tailor the Punta Mita experience for each guest before they even arrive? AS: Every booking triggers contact from our bilingual on-site concierge, who learns the group’s tastes, dietary restrictions and priorities. Tee times, yacht charters, menus and security coordination are handled before arrival. The concierge greets guests personally and the household staff are pre-briefed on each traveler’s needs and itinerary. Anything can be charged to the property, and billing is reviewed at checkout in the privacy of the living room. We have welcomed celebrities, CEOs, athletes and public figures and our goal is always to make luxury feel effortless. MK: Many Punta Mita homes include access to exclusive beach clubs and golf courses. How does this elevate the guest experience compared to other luxury markets? AS: This gated community is regarded as the safest beach destination in Mexico. Guests are not confined to the property, since residences include golf carts to explore the peninsula. That’s where five beach clubs, two Jack Nicklaus golf courses and a village with off-resort dining options await. These courses, run by Four Seasons Resorts, are open only to guests who stay in hotels or residences inside the compound. MK: How do you curate activities so guests can enjoy both adventure and relaxation during their stay? AS: We are never stuffy. Luxury is casual, which is the first step toward relaxing. Some families want a full itinerary months in advance, and we create it. Others wake up and decide to go fishing that day and we will have a boat and crew at our private dock within hours. MK: You have been recognized by Airbnb as one of the best in the region. What standards or practices helped earn that distinction, and how will you continue to grow the brand? AS: We are the No. 1 company for guest experience in Mexico and all Caribbean countries, according to Airbnb—which aligns with our repeat guest rate of about one-third. Earning that required years of work. There are no shortcuts. Every AC unit must be well maintained, and every bedsheet must be ironed and inspected. Our plan is to expand this standard to other luxury destinations in Mexico. We now offer an impressive Cabo portfolio focused on quiet, relaxed luxury for families. MK: Your portfolio ranges from intimate villas to sprawling oceanfront estates. How do you match each guest or family to the perfect property? AS: We encourage guests to call our rental agents, who have each worked at our properties in person—most often as a concierge. If a guest wants a sunset view, the agent can tell them which bedroom faces the sunset because they have been there. If a guest needs extra photos to gauge closet space, they receive them in a few hours. When you are paying for luxury, you deserve that level of service. MK: How do you balance maintaining privacy and exclusivity with showcasing properties to potential guests? AS: When a property is occupied, no one except authorized staff may enter. We have earned the trust of many public figures through quiet, effective security measures and a culture of discretion. MK: What role does sustainability play in how you manage and market Punta Mita properties? AS: Most staff travel using electric cars or golf carts that we charge with in-house solar panels. Punta Mita operates one of Mexico’s best recycling and responsible garbage disposal programs. MK: How has the profile of your guests changed in recent years? AS: Remote workers were a major trend in 2020 through 2023, but that growth has leveled. We now see increasing demand for destination weddings and corporate events, especially for companies with executives in different locations. Thanksgiving and Christmas have also grown in popularity, given easy direct flights and excellent private chefs. MK: What is the magic moment that keeps guests returning to Punta Mita year after year? AS: Every trip is different, yet one memory stands out: a private whale-watching tour. Each group sails with a marine biologist who drops an underwater microphone into the sea. We encountered mothers tending to their newborns, and the choir of their songs moved my mother to tears. This six-bedroom, six-and-a-half-bath oceanfront sanctuary in the Kupuri Estates enclave fuses contemporary Mexican artistry with sweeping Pacific views. The vision was to create a space where art flourishes beside coastal luxury. The owner personally selected each piece from Jalisco galleries and artist studios, building relationships with creators who understand the soul of Mexican culture. Palapa-inspired architecture, warm wood tones and natural materials allow the art collection and the ocean to share center stage, so the home feels authentically Mexican and thoroughly sophisticated. MK: How do three words capture the Casa Yeiya experience? AS: Art. Ocean. Soul. Casa Yeiya immerses guests in luxurious Punta Mita comfort while steeping them in culture and breathtaking Pacific views. The curated art takes guests on a journey through Mexico through the eyes of its artists, while the oceanfront setting provides endless natural beauty. The care and soul poured into every detail create a home that guests do not want to leave. MK: In a region where many villas offer pools and views, how does Casa Yeiya set itself apart? AS: Casa Yeiya offers experiences. The private cinema becomes a family tradition, the golf simulator encourages friendly competition and the game room brings generations together. It is an art gallery by day and an entertainment complex by evening—always with full ocean views and dedicated staff ensuring everything flows easily. The owner prefers that guests enjoy the home’s offerings instead of planning excursions, since the property has everything needed. MK: How do two, six-person golf carts and full-time staff shape the stay? AS: These details reflect a philosophy that luxury should be effortless. Guests never worry about transportation or daily needs. A personal cook prepares fresh breakfast without planning, and the concierge arranges spa treatments, cultural outings or yacht charters. It is the difference between a vacation rental and a lifestyle experience. MK: How do guests balance in-villa relaxation with resort activities? AS: The team anticipates every need, so movement between villa and resort amenities is simple. Casa Yeiya includes access to Kupuri Beach Club and multiple Punta Mita amenities, and the staff handles plans so guests can focus on rest or play as they prefer. MK: What makes Casa Yeiya well-suited for multi-generational families or group gatherings? AS: The layout naturally creates spaces for different needs, with quiet art appreciation upstairs and lively entertainment downstairs. Grandparents enjoy culture and views, parents value full service and teenagers are drawn to the game room and cinema. The art collection sparks conversation across generations, and multiple entertaining areas ensure everyone finds a favorite place—with the pool as a central gathering point. MK: Can you share a memorable concierge request that shows Casa Yeiya’s spirit? AS: We organized a sunset tequila tasting around the fire pit for the adults. The children wanted to participate, so the team created a juice tasting on the spot so they could observe colors and scents and feel included with their family. MK: Which architectural or design features make Casa Yeiya stand out in Punta Mita? AS: A monumental whale tail sculpture greets guests at the entrance, signaling that this is not a typical beach house. Crafted from tens of thousands of glass beads using an ancestral local technique, it honors the whale migration at Punta Mita. The seamless integration of gallery spaces and living areas, the monochromatic Xolo dog sculpture and the newspaper portrait collection reveal discoveries at every turn, while palapa-inspired architecture frames art and ocean views. MK: How do you ensure seamless and discreet service for high-profile guests? AS: Punta Mita is ideal for privacy. HOA guidelines ensure no property blocks another’s views or provides visual access into windows or common areas. The full-time staff are on-site, understand discretion and anticipate needs and the layout provides natural privacy with separate zones for retreat and activity. MK: Which seasons or events make Casa Yeiya especially attractive? AS: Whale-watching season, from November to March, transforms the infinity pool into front-row seating for nature’s greatest show. The outdoor pizza oven makes December celebrations special and the cinema is a perfect refuge during occasional summer rains. The art and ocean views make every season extraordinary. The Next Chapter: A Nationwide Expansion In July 2025, Mita Residential announced a landmark expansion into Los Cabos and the Riviera Maya, adding 37 premier homes to its growing portfolio—with 27 along the Pacific coast in Los Cabos and 10 on the Caribbean shores of the Riviera Maya. “Expanding to Los Cabos and the Riviera Maya is more than just growth—it is a natural extension of our promise to deliver unforgettable moments to both our guests and homeowners,” Sarmiento said. “We are proud to bring our signature blend of personalized service, exclusivity and warmth to two of the world’s most iconic beach destinations.” In Los Cabos, desert landscapes meet the Sea of Cortez in a dramatic canvas of light. Here, Mita Residential’s collection of oceanfront estates include private pools, chef services and sea-view terraces. In the Riviera Maya, the focus turns to the Caribbean’s gentle rhythm, with 10 homes located in Tulum and the Sian Ka’an Nature Reserve, surrounded by pristine beaches and Mayan heritage. This dual-coast expansion positions Mita Residential to support homeowners and travelers across every stage—from property care and staffing to guest curation and concierge logistics. As Mita Residential continues to expand its reach across Mexico’s most coveted coastlines, the company’s ethos remains rooted in something timeless: the belief that true luxury is felt, not flaunted. Whether experienced in the hushed calm of Casa Yeiya or the curated ease of a family retreat in Los Cabos, Mita’s world is one where art, nature and hospitality converge—where every detail whispers, rather than shouts, of care. • Historic Home Re-Opens: The Newly Renovated Home Is Now The Historical Society and Museum Of Dania Beach | sun-times

Historic Home Re-Opens: The Newly Renovated Home Is Now The Historical Society and Museum Of Dania Beach South Florida Sun Times Feb 27, 2025 The extensive renovation of Dania Beach’s historic 20th century Colonial Revival Nyberg-Swanson house is complete. The re-opening ceremony held this past Tuesday, February 25th, at 5:00 p.m., located at 102 West Dania Beach Boulevard, Dania Beach, Florida, 33004, in the city’s downtown arts district. The historic home has a new and /or improved roof, masonry, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, landscaping, paint, windows and doors, HVAC, floors, and information technology Infrastructure. The $1,245,053.18 renovation cost was covered by funds made available through the American Rescue Plan. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Nyberg-Swanson house once stood at the corner of U.S. 1 and Stirling Road. It served as the multigenerational home of Dania Beach settlers until 1975 when it was adapted as a hair salon. To save the house from destruction in the 1990s, the homeowner and the City of Dania Beach cooperated to relocate the structure to its present location at 102 West Dania Beach Boulevard. The home was the temporary home of city administrative offices and the Dania Beach Chamber of Commerce over the years, while undergoing several repairs. The recent renovation was the most significant and brought the home up to today’s building standards. Historical Significance The Nyberg-Swanson House was constructed in the Park Hill subdivision, a ten-acre tract that had been acquired about 1905 by Jena and Kjerstine Eskilsen, residents of Cook County, Illinois, and representatives of the Dania Beach Brotherhood of America. The Eskilsens apparently did not reside in Dania Beach. As early investors and developers of Dania Beach real estate, they opened Eskilsen’s Addition to Dania Beach ca. 1904 on the north end of Henry Flagler’s Modelo town plan. In August 1911, they sold their ten-acre tract in section three to settlers Charles and Olive Nelson. In May 1912, Charles Nelson hired Civil Engineer Charles Pratt to subdivide the ten acres for residential development. The subdivision lay at the south end of the Dania Beach town plan and west of South Federal Highway. Nelson recorded the plat, named Park Hill, on October 12, 1912. It consisted of nearly 100 building lots and a small central park. Shortly after plating the subdivision, Nelson constructed the masonry dwellings, which originally faced Chicago Avenue, now called Federal Highway. Immediately to the north lay Denmark Street, now Southeast 2 Street. By 1924, three additional masonry houses had been built in the Park Hill subdivision, none of which remain standing. Nelson had immigrated to the United States from Denmark in 1896. He was among the first Scandinavian settlers in Dania Beach. Between 1904 and 1917 he acquired numerous town lots and farm parcels and operated a truck farm. He was elected to the Dania Beach town council, serving one term (1914-1915). His wife, Olive, helped organize the Dania Beach Civic Improvement Club in 1913 and served as its first secretary. In 1917 the Nelsons sold their home to Carl Gustaf and Emmy Nyberg for $4,700 and apparently left the area. Carl Gustaf Nyberg, known popularly as “Gust,” arrived in Dania Beach around 1901 and was joined by Emmy in 1907. Between 1907 and 1911, Gust acquired approximately 100 acres of farmland surrounding Dania Beach and town lots in the city from the Florida East Coast Railway’s Model Land Company and from several early Dania Beach settlers. In 1906, he acquired a two-story house at 125 South Federal Highway in lot 16, block 25 of the Modelo town plan, where they resided for approximately a decade. He became a successful farmer and in 1911 leased a fourteen-foot by sixty-foot lot next to the Florida East Coast Railway tracks. On the site, he built a packing house, which was one of eleven packing houses located on the east side of the tracks between Dania Beach Boulevard and Northwest 2nd Street. He served one term (1912-1913) on the Dania Beach town council. In December 1918, about eighteen months after acquiring the house, Gust was killed when his automobile was struck by a Florida East Coast Railway train at the Stirling Road crossing, just two blocks west of his home. The Ft. Lauderdale Sentinel reported that the car was completely wrecked and Nyberg died within minutes of the crash. Nyberg was survived by his wife and two children, five-year-old Ellen and two-year-old Viola. His estate was appraised at $18,500, including 400 acres of farmland. Emmy continued to operate the truck farm and packing house. About 1921 she married Richard Swanson, a native of Sweden who had immigrated to the United States in 1906 and had been naturalized as a citizen in 1915, about the time of his arrival in Dania Beach. Richard and Emmy Swanson continued to operate the truck farm and packing house. Swanson developed a partnership with Ira C. Williams and operated the farm and packing house under the name Swanson and Williams Company. During the 1920’s, Richard and Emmy speculated in real estate. About 1923, Emmy and her daughter, Ellen Stoinoff, developed Nyberg Apartments, a two-story masonry building located at 107 North Federal Highway in Dania Beach. Ellen managed the property. Richard Swanson opened a real estate business about 1926. Swanson’s success as a farmer and businessman spilled over into politics. In November 1929 he won a seat on the town council and was re-elected several times, serving one-year terms between 1931 and 1935. During this period, Swanson expanded his family interest with Ira Williams, and by 1940 the partners had added a fruit packing house along the railroad tracks. Emmy prospered from her investments and farm operations. She died in May 1945, leaving an estate of $97,229.27, including $35,000 in cash, bonds, and certificates. Richard Swanson and his descendants continued to reside in the dwelling until 1975. The building was then adapted for use as a hair styling salon, a purpose it served until the 1990’s when the property was purchased for the construction of a new commercial building. To save the house from destruction, the owner and the City of Dania Beach cooperated to relocate the structure to its present location. The LaPlant-Adair Company of Boynton Beach, recipient of an award from the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation for its part in preserving Sea Gull Cottage in Palm Beach, moved the Nyberg-Swanson House to its present site in 1994. For several years, the City used it as city administrative offices. In 2000, it became the temporary home of the Greater Dania Beach Chamber of Commerce. In the late 1990’s, a grant from the Florida Bureau of Historic Resources helped pay for the restoration of the exterior; another such grant provided funds for the interior restoration that were completed in July of 2004. In 2025, a major restoration was completed that included a roof, electrical, plumbing, and technology Infrastructure. Architectural Significance The Nyberg-Swanson House is a good, local example of early 20th century Colonial Revival architecture in Dania Beach and Broward County. The Building, a rectangular structure with a hipped-roof, consists of 1-1/2 stories, with a one-story, fully width veranda supported by classical columns. It is unusual in its use of rusticated concrete blocks instead of the more familiar brick or weatherboard characteristic of Colonial Revival architecture. Colonial Revival features include wooden Tuscan columns on the veranda and the small pedimented entrance portico. Other defining features are the classical serliana that separates the foyer from the dining room, the oval-shaped, beveled glass light in the main entrance door, and the delicate spindle balusters of the staircase found in the foyer. The Nyberg-Swanson House is one of two surviving examples of the use of rusticated concrete block construction in the City of Dania Beach. The house is also notable for its large, hipped dormers and for its use of metal shingles as a roofing material, which was popular in South Florida during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The 18+1/1-light windows are another unusual detail, probably derived from the vocabulary of Queen Anne architecture. The next historic Dania Beach structure to undergo renovations will be the Dania Beach Woman’s Club, which is next door to the Nyberg-Swanson house. Previous Next

  • JCS Matzah Mitzvah 2026 - This Passover, More Than 500 Seniors Are Counting On Us | sun-times

JCS Matzah Mitzvah 2026 - This Passover, More Than 500 Seniors Are Counting On Us South Florida Sun Times Feb 25, 2026 On Sunday, March 8th, 2026 At 9:00 a.m. Sharp, Hundreds Of Volunteers Will Gather With A Shared Purpose: To Ensure That More Than 500 Homebound Seniors And Holocaust Survivors Feel Remembered, Honored, And Cared For This Passover. The Annual JCS Matzah Mitzvah Returns In 2026 With Renewed Energy, Deeper Connection, And A Clear Message To The Community — Our Seniors Are Counting On You. Organized by Jewish Community Services of South Florida (JCS), this beloved initiative transforms the weeks before Passover into a hands-on experience of kindness. Volunteers don’t just pack food; they deliver dignity. They don’t simply assemble baskets; they carry stories, heritage, and human connection straight to the doorsteps of those who need it most. And this year, spots are filling quickly. A Morning That Matters The day begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. at two community locations: • North - Scheck Hillel Community School • South - Bet Shira Congregation From the moment volunteers arrive, the atmosphere is charged with purpose. Tables fill with Passover essentials — matzah, shelf-stable holiday foods, and thoughtfully selected personal hygiene items. Every box is assembled with care, knowing that for many recipients, this delivery is more than practical support — it is a lifeline to the community. Clients expect their deliveries between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., making punctuality essential. Delivery assignments are first come, first served. Arriving late may mean missing the opportunity to deliver. This is not a drop-in event. It is a coordinated mission. More Than a Basket Passover is a holiday rooted in memory, resilience, and freedom. For Holocaust Survivors in our community, those themes are deeply personal. A holiday basket is not simply a convenience; it is a reaffirmation that their lives and stories matter. Many recipients are over 80 or 90 years old. Some live alone. Others are physically unable to shop or prepare for the holiday without assistance. Through JCS Matzah Mitzvah, volunteers bridge the gap between isolation and inclusion. Each knock on the door carries warmth. Each smile exchanged reinforces that no one is forgotten. Participation requires commitment — and that’s part of what makes it meaningful. Volunteers will dedicate up to four hours to both packing and delivering Passover food and personal hygiene baskets. Packing only is not allowed; every participant completes the full experience. Delivery drivers should be prepared to travel 25+ miles if needed. Assignments depend on demand and geography, and flexibility ensures that every senior receives their package on time. All volunteers over age 18 must be registered in advance. Children under 18 no longer need to register, but must be accompanied by an adult for the entirety of the event. Registration closes on March 1st, 2026. There will be no walk-ins or guest changes after that date. All guests must present their registration ticket and photo ID at the door. Without these items, entry will be denied. These guidelines aren’t barriers — they’re safeguards that allow the operation to run smoothly and respectfully for the vulnerable clients who depend on it. The Vibe: Community, Caring, Connection Step into the packing room and you’ll feel it immediately. Multi-generational volunteers working side by side. Parents teaching children about giving back. Teens lifting boxes. Adults coordinating routes. Friends laughing as they tape packages shut. Then comes the delivery — often the most moving part of the morning. Volunteers are welcomed into living rooms adorned with family photos and memories of decades past. Conversations unfold about childhood Seders, immigration journeys, grandchildren, and hope. Sometimes the exchange lasts just a few minutes. Sometimes it lingers. But it always matters. This is what a community looks like in action. Matzah Mitzvah is a reflection of this mission — practical support delivered with compassion. Why Your Participation Matters The need is real. More than 500 seniors and Holocaust Survivors are expecting deliveries this year. Many rely on fixed incomes. Some have limited family nearby. All deserve to celebrate Passover with dignity. By showing up, you become part of something larger than yourself: • You preserve memory. • You strengthen community bonds. • You honor resilience. • You ensure that no elder feels forgotten. And in return, volunteers often say they receive far more than they give. Important Details at a Glance Matzah Mitzvah 2026 Sunday, March 8th, 2026 9:00 a.m. (arrive on time) • Registration closes: March 1st, 2026 • No walk-ins permitted. • Photo ID and confirmation ticket required for entry. • Ages 18+ must register. • Children must be accompanied by an adult. • Packing and delivery required. All deliveries are first come, first served. Arriving promptly ensures you will receive a delivery assignment. Ways to Get Involved Beyond Volunteering Not everyone can attend in person — but everyone can help. Financial contributions directly support the purchase of food, hygiene items, and logistical coordination required to reach hundreds of households in just one morning. There are moments in the year that define who we are as a community. JCS Matzah Mitzvah is one of them. It is not glamorous. It is not complicated. It is simply neighbors helping neighbors — honoring elders who helped build the very community we cherish today. Cars will fill with boxes. Doorbells will ring. And in homes across Miami-Dade County, seniors and Holocaust Survivors will feel the warmth of being remembered. Spots are filling quickly. Registration closes March 1st, 2026. Show up. Pack with purpose. Deliver with heart. Because this Passover, more than 500 seniors are counting on us. A Century of Service Since 1920, Jewish Community Services of South Florida has remained true to its original mission of providing exemplary social services through compassionate and comprehensive programs that help people stay healthy and productive. 7 Ways To Create A Sensory-Friendly Holiday Celebration For Kids With Autism South Florida Sun Times Dec 25, 2025 Whether It’s A Festive Family Dinner Or A Party, A Holiday Celebration Is Often Meant To Be A Joyful Time Of Connection. However, For Many Autistic Children And Their Families, A Holiday Get-Together Can Present Unique Challenges. Sensory Sensitivities, Changes To Familiar Routines, And Increased Social Expectations May Make Festive Environments Feel Overwhelming Or Distressing. Recognizing And Respecting These Differences Is Key To Creating A More Inclusive And Supportive Holiday Experience For Everyone Involved. As the CEO of Above and Beyond Therapy, where we provide personalized ABA therapy in Georgia, I’ve seen firsthand how thoughtfulness, flexibility, and inclusion can positively shape holiday gatherings for children with Autism and their families. With intentional planning and compassion, traditions and environments can be adapted so every child feels safe, supported, and empowered to engage in ways that respect their individual needs and preferences. Here are seven ways to create a sensory-friendly holiday celebration that supports autistic children. Respect and Maintain Predictable Routines Children with Autism often thrive on structure and predictability. A holiday event can disrupt daily routines, such as mealtimes, sleep schedules, or familiar activities, which may increase anxiety or emotional dysregulation. To help ease this transition, try to keep as much of the child’s regular routine intact as possible on the day of the event. Using visual schedules, countdowns, or social stories can help prepare the child for what to expect. Letting them know when it will start and end and what activities might happen can also reduce uncertainty. Even small efforts, such as keeping bedtime consistent or eating familiar foods beforehand, can help a child feel more grounded. Create a Quiet Space for Regulation Holiday celebrations often involve noise, crowds, and constant activity. For children with sensory sensitivities, having access to a quiet, calming space is essential. Designate a room or area where the child can take breaks as needed. This space might include soft lighting, noise-canceling headphones, weighted blankets, favorite toys, or books. If you’re attending an event outside your home, consider bringing a small sensory kit and asking the host in advance if a quiet space is available. Allowing a child to step away without judgment helps prevent sensory overload and supports emotional regulation. Be Mindful of Sensory Overload From bright decorations and loud music to strong scents and lots of movement, a holiday celebration can be filled with intense sensory input. Thoughtfully adjusting the environment can make a significant difference. Opt for soft or adjustable lighting instead of flashing lights, keep music at a lower volume, and avoid strong fragrances when possible. Introducing sensory elements gradually and respecting a child’s need to opt out is important. Offering alternatives, such as quiet crafts, familiar games, or one-on-one activities, will also allow children to engage without feeling overwhelmed. Give Choices and Respect Autonomy Holiday traditions can be meaningful, but they should never override a child’s comfort or sense of control. Giving children choices helps them feel empowered and respected. You might ask, “Would you like to help decorate or take a break nearby?” or “Do you want to stay for the whole get-together or just part of it?”If a child chooses not to participate in certain activities, honor that decision without pressure. Connection and emotional safety matter more than following traditions exactly as planned. Prepare for Social Interactions A holiday celebration often includes extended family, friends, or unfamiliar guests, which can create added social pressure. Expectations around greetings, conversation, or physical affection may feel uncomfortable for children with autism. Preparing ahead of time with social stories or role-playing common scenarios can help set clear expectations. Reassure the child that it’s okay to wave instead of hug, take breaks from conversations, or communicate in their own way. It’s also helpful to inform guests in advance so they understand and respect the child’s boundaries. Authentic connection should always take priority over social norms. Plan Food Options With Sensory Needs in Mind Holiday events often center around food, which can be challenging for children with sensory sensitivities or selective eating preferences. Including familiar, preferred foods alongside traditional dishes can help the child feel safe and included. There’s no need to pressure them to try new foods during the celebration. If the event is at someone else’s home, bringing along favorite snacks or a familiar meal can ease stress and make the experience more enjoyable for everyone. Communicate With Family and Friends Open communication is essential for creating a supportive holiday event. Talk with family members or hosts ahead of time about your child’s needs, preferences, and boundaries. Share what helps them feel comfortable and what may be overwhelming. This isn’t about apologizing; it’s about advocating. Let others know the child may need breaks, may not participate in every activity, or may express joy differently. Encouraging empathy, flexibility, and understanding helps create a truly inclusive environment. Put Connection and Inclusion at the Heart of the Celebration! A holiday get-together can be meaningful and joyful for autistic children when their needs are respected and supported. Thoughtful planning, flexibility, and clear communication go a long way in creating a positive experience. At its core, a holiday celebration is about connection, not perfection. By prioritizing inclusion and sensory-friendly choices, we help ensure every child feels seen, valued, and welcome.
