- Tax Day Is Coming: Protect Your Identity And Refund From Online Scammers
Tax Day Is Coming: Protect Your Identity And Refund From Online Scammers April 11, 2024 Share Filing taxes online has made an often-dreaded task easier and more convenient. However, it's important to be aware of heightened cyber security risks during Tax Season that could lead to Identity Theft. In 2023, the IRS flagged over a million tax returns for possible Identity Theft and found a 31% increase in fraudulent returns from the previous year. With a large majority of taxpayers opting to file electronically, the threat of cybercriminals using your SSN to file and steal your return is real. The experts at LifeLock have pro tips on how to safeguard your identity by learning about common scams and the steps to take to keep your information safe during Tax Season. Online criminals that prey on taxpayers seek ways to obtain personal and financial information to steal your identity, file tax returns under your name to steal your refund, or convince you to send them Money, Gift Cards or Cryptocurrencies. While you may not think you're vulnerable to obvious tax and IRS imposter scams, criminals are using convincingly sophisticated tactics. And they love to prey on late filers. So, it's vital to stay alert when it comes to your personal information as the tax deadline approaches. Watch for these tax scams, here are four common tactics you may see, and how to avoid falling for them: 1. Phishy IRS Schemes These scams are designed to convince you that a message supposedly from the IRS is legitimate, tricking you into clicking an embedded link in an email or text. These links then lead to fake IRS websites created to record information you input. Or they contact you by phone or text pretending to be from the IRS and rope you into a scam. Some fraudsters will use phishing scams to get your personal information, threaten or trick you into paying a "balance you owe" using Gift Cards, Cryptocurrency or Wire Transfers. If you would like to verify a contact from the IRS go to: www.IRS.gov and search on the letter, notice, or form number. Please be aware fraudsters often modify legitimate IRS letters and forms. You can also find information at Understanding your notice or letter or by searching forms and instructions. For additional information please see How to know it’s really the IRS calling or knocking on your door. If it is legitimate, you'll find instructions on how to respond. If the completion of a form is required and it’s provided by a questionable contact, you should verify the form is identical to the same form on: www.IRS.gov by searching forms and instructions. If you don't find information on our website or the instructions are different from what you were told to do in the letter, notice or form, please use the appropriate online resources. Once you have determined that it is not legitimate, report the incident to: phishing@irs.gov . Pro Tip: The IRS will never contact you via email, text or phone without reaching out by mail first. The IRS does not accept payments via Gift Cards, Cryptocurrency or Wire Transfers. For concerns about your taxes from this year or any year, go straight to: www.IRS.gov . If an email looks "phishy," it probably is. You can flag the message as phishing or junk and/or simply delete it. Get a threatening or suspicious phone call supposedly from the IRS? Hang up. 2. Ghost Tax Prep Services When hiring someone to do your taxes, make sure to use a reputable tax preparation service. A legitimate tax preparer must have a valid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) and sign your return once complete. Refusing to sign is an indication they could be a ghost tax preparer, only interested in collecting the fee. Another warning sign is requiring a cash payment. Pro Tip: You can check the credentials of legitimate tax preparers by using the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers. 3. Social Media Scams Fake tax advice groups and profiles lure people by promising insider tips and bigger refunds, only to phish for sensitive data. These groups often appear legit, and may contact you via direct messages, comments or through seemingly harmless quizzes or surveys. Phishing links disguised as helpful resources or urgent notifications trick users into revealing critical information or downloading malware. Pro Tip: Privacy settings are your first line of defense against Identity Theft on Social Media. These settings control who sees your posts, personal details and even friend lists, which can all be used by cybercriminals. Learn more about staying safe on Social Media and other tips on LifeLock's blog. 4. Tax Identity Theft Scammers can use information like your SSN, birthdate and employer to file a fraudulent return in your name. Then they can collect your refund and use your information to open Credit Cards and Accounts. Pro Tip: Get an IP (Identity Protection) PIN, a six-digit number known only to you and the IRS, each year before filing as an added layer of security against thieves. Filing with an incorrect or missing IP PIN will result in the rejection of your e-filed return and it may be flagged for potential fraud until it can be verified. The easiest way to get an IP PIN is to register on the IRS website. How To Protect Yourself Regularly monitor your Financial Accounts, Credit Cards and Credit Scores for unusual activity and fraudulent transactions. If you try filing and are notified that a Tax Return was already filed in your name, you can complete a paper return and include form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit) that provides all the necessary details for the IRS to open an investigation. Request a copy of the fraudulent return to help understand what information was used by the thief. If you receive a telephone call or message from someone claiming to be with the IRS and you are not comfortable providing the information, you should contact the IRS customer service line at: 1 (800) 829-4933 to verify the validity of the call or message. < Previous News Next News >

- Where Have All Of The Beach Chairs Gone In Hallandale?
Where Have All Of The Beach Chairs Gone In Hallandale? By Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper August 15, 2024 Share I know it has been a while since this issue arose about storing and presetting beach chairs on our beach. As promised, I worked hard over the past months to make sure this was resolved. I have been in contact with multiple boards and their members to discuss how a fair and equitable plan could be put in place. The goal was to provide the ability for condominiums to provide courtesy chair service to their owners as they have without being forced to use a set contractor. Many beachfront condominiums have been providing this service for years. The issue is the beach is Public and Services outside of City Services are only permitted through a licensing agreement. This allows everyone, residents, and visitors alike, the use of our beach. From day one, I was opposed to an exclusive vendor contract. Before summer break, I worked with our commission and passed a 3-2 vote to prevent an exclusive contract. This was a step forward that would allow the building to provide a service just like they have been. We could not, however, reach an agreement about what an ordinance or program would look like. I presented at that initial meeting a list of suggested recommendations which I compiled information from other cities. After that meeting the city worked with the Beach Club and their attorney to produce an agreed upon pilot. A pilot program was set up with a sample agreement to allow storage and presets. First, the proposal suggested a $1,000 Filing Fee and $30 Per Unit Charge. This was not acceptable to me and other commissioners. Before summer break, I wanted to make sure the service which was stopped during beach renourishment was made available. Before the break, I asked that we address the Fee Structure at our Budget hearing in June. I suggested a Flat Registration Fee but that did not pass. I then suggested a Flat Fee and a Per Chair Fee. That still did not pass. There was a stalemate. So, before summer break the City Manager provided the ability for buildings to apply for use with no fee attached. The goal was to take a few weeks until we could resolve the issue and establish an ordinance. The commission discussed the Beach Chair Agreement at our June 3rd Regular Meeting. At that meeting there was once again a debate. One motion was to do an Application Fee for $1,000 and a $30 Per Unit Fee. That failed. Then there was a debate to reduce it to $25 Per Unit. That went nowhere. I made a motion for the Flat Fee with a $5 Per Chair Fee. Vice Mayor Lima Taub raised the issue about condominiums that do not want to store but simply place chairs on demand. I amended my motion to be a $1,000 Application Fee and a $5 Per Chair for those buildings that want to store and present a $500 Fee for condominiums that want to simply do on demand courtesy chairs. That motion did pass 3-2. So, we finally have a path forward. While many asked why we are not simply letting everyone do it free of charge, that would create a huge issue. Our ordinance simply does not allow this service without an agreement. Executing these agreements and monitoring them will utilize staff time which equates to Taxpayer Costs. The beach is a Public and a City Asset. We need to adopt laws and regulations fairly and equitably. This resolution is just that. It allows our beachfront condominiums to be able to utilize the Public Beach Park in their backyard and not be burdened by excessive fees. The next step will include updating the licensing agreement and our ordinance. The ordinance will take two readings after it is ready. Hopefully, the ordinance and final lease documents will be finalized and in place in early September. In the meantime, condominiums abutting the beach can utilize the beach for chair services. It also does not prevent a beach chair concession. In other good news, staff have informed us they have been out to bid and have received three proposers interested in offering services to run our South Beach Concessions. The vendors will also be able to provide chair services. Look for further updates. I encourage you to reach out and share your questions, concerns, and ideas to help make our city an even better place. As always, it is an honor to be your Mayor of Hallandale Beach. - The Politics Of Hate - Weaponized Discord Is The Deep State’s Most Effective Tool | sun-times
The Politics Of Hate - Weaponized Discord Is The Deep State’s Most Effective Tool By John & Nisha Whitehead Feb 19, 2026 This Country Was Built On The Radical Idea That The Government Exists To Serve The People—Not To Control Them, Monitor Them, Manage Them, Or Rule Over Them. That idea is being systematically dismantled by a Deep State determined to entrench its power at our expense by keeping the nation divided, distracted, and perpetually at war with itself. This is what happens when those in power discover that a divided people are easier to manipulate than a united one—and that hate is not a byproduct of politics, but one of its most effective weapons. This nation is being destabilized by forces that masquerade as political movements, but dig down deep, and you’ll find that power and greed work the same no matter which party hat they wear. The “politics of hate” is a bipartisan tool. The division that is tearing this country apart is not an accident. It has been cultivated, weaponized, and exploited. As a result, life in America has become a gut-wrenching, soul-sucking, misery-drenched existence. “We the people” are being subjected to crackdowns, clampdowns, shutdowns, showdowns, shootdowns, standdowns, knockdowns, putdowns, breakdowns, lockdowns, takedowns, slowdowns, meltdowns, and never-ending letdowns. We’ve been held up, stripped down, faked out, photographed, frisked, fracked, hacked, tracked, cracked, intercepted, accessed, spied on, zapped, mapped, searched, shot at, tasered, tortured, tackled, trussed up, tricked, lied to, labeled, libeled, leered at, shoved aside, saddled with debt not of our own making, sold a bill of goods about national security, tuned out by those representing us, tossed aside, and taken to the cleaners. We’ve had our freedoms turned inside out, our democratic structure flipped upside down, and our house of cards left in a shambles. We’ve been locked down, shut in, fenced off, fined, cited, censored, silenced, surveilled, tracked, traced, coerced, mandated, ordered, threatened, and punished in the name of “public health,” with our rights treated not as inalienable, but as conditional privileges—granted, suspended, or revoked at the whim of governors, bureaucrats, and unelected officials. We’ve been told that as citizens we have no rights within 100 miles of our own border. Now those “Constitution-free zones” have expanded far beyond the nation’s borders, as federal agents stop, question, detain, raid, and surveil Americans in a profit-driven quest to fill quotas and establish a “papers please” society. We’ve seen the police transformed from community peacekeepers to point guards for the militarized corporate state. We’ve been pushed around, prodded, poked, pried at, spied on, scanned, shot and intimidated by the very individuals—police—hired to safeguard our rights. We’ve been sodomized, victimized, jeopardized, demoralized, traumatized, stigmatized, vandalized, demonized, polarized and terrorized, often without having done anything to justify such treatment. Blame it on a government mindset that renders us guilty before we’ve even been charged, let alone convicted, of any wrongdoing. We’ve been railroaded into believing that our votes count, that we live in a democracy, that elections make a difference, that it matters whether we vote Republican or Democrat, and that our elected officials are looking out for our best interests. Truth be told, we live in an oligarchy. We’ve gone from having privacy in our inner sanctums to having nowhere to hide, with wearable devices and biometric trackers monitoring our bodies, apps logging our movements and interactions, homes that spy on us through smart meters, cameras, and remotely controlled systems, and cars that listen to our conversations and track our whereabouts. Even our cities have become wall-to-wall electronic concentration camps, with license-plate readers, facial recognition systems, and high-definition cameras recording everything that takes place within city limits. We’ve been rendered enemy combatants in our own country, denied basic due process rights, held against our will without access to an attorney or being charged with a crime, and left to molder in jail until such a time as the government is willing to let us go or allow us to defend ourselves. We’ve seen families ripped apart by militarized ICE raids, homes entered without judicial warrants, asylum seekers caged, long-time residents disappeared into detention centers, and entire communities terrorized by quota-driven enforcement schemes that trample due process and treat human beings as collateral damage. We’ve been silenced, censored and forced to conform, shut up in free speech zones, gagged by hate crime laws, stifled by political correctness, muzzled by misguided anti-bullying statutes, and pepper sprayed for taking part in peaceful protests. We’ve had our tax dollars burned on no-bid emergency contracts, bloated surveillance programs, militarized policing grants, mass detention facilities, endless foreign wars, and government handouts to private corporations tasked with censoring speech, tracking behavior, enforcing mandates, and building databases on the American people—while roads crumble, schools fail, and basic needs go unmet. We are no longer just being governed. In many parts of the country, we are being occupied—by our own government. American cities are increasingly treated as hostile territory—patrolled by National Guard units, federalized police forces, and armed immigration agents operating with military tactics, military equipment, and military rules of engagement. At the same time, the country has seen the quiet expansion of vast warehouse-style detention centers—human storage facilities designed to make so-called “undesirables” disappear. Are you exhausted yet? You should be. More than exhausted, however, you should be outraged at what has been done to our country. I’m outraged at what has been done to our freedoms. This is not a culture war. It is not a partisan feud. It is not a battle between left and right, red and blue, believer and nonbeliever. It is a power struggle between a ruling class that governs through fear, division, and exhaustion—and a people whose greatest strength lies not in violence, but in solidarity. We do not have to agree on politics to see what is happening. We only have to decide whether to continue playing a role in our own manipulation. America will not be saved by rage. As I make clear in Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, America will be saved—if it is saved at all—by people who refuse to play by the Deep State’s rules. Demand instead that the government play by our rules—the rules of the Constitution. And when those in power fail to do so, when they trample over the rule of the law and disregard the contract that holds them accountable, boot every last one of them out— peacefully, lawfully, and without exception. A New Kind of Boat Show: An Entertaining Three-day Experience That’s So Miami September 29, 2022 Share The Pandemic had an unusual effect on the Boat Industry. As new boaters entered the market, a domino effect took place, with their friends and families getting into the activity as well. The trend has slowed since the high of 2020, but the industry is still going strong. So if you are in the market, a new kind of boat show will come ashore just in time for the Summer of 2023.
