  • Make The Summer "Purr-Fect": Here Are Some Fun Ideas To Do With Your Furry Friend

Make The Summer "Purr-Fect": Here Are Some Fun Ideas To Do With Your Furry Friend June 15, 2023 Share Americans are no strangers to spending money on their pets and summer is the "purr-fect" time for families to spoil their furry family members. In fact, pet parents are taking greater initiative in providing for their pets' health and lifestyle. In 2022, Americans spent $136 Billion on their pets, up more than 10% from 2021, according to the American Pet Products Association. Here are some fun ideas to do with your furry friend this summer: Get Outside Going for a walk, heading to a dog park or simply running in the backyard can all provide fun, engaging ways for pets to get outside and enjoy some sunshine. Join in on the action with a game of fetch using your pet's favorite ball or toy so you can bond with your furry friend all while getting a little exercise. Feed Pets Their Favorite Foods Feeding your dog the best food possible, like fresh food, has become increasingly popular. A veterinary-formulated option like Pure Balance Pro+, which can be found at WalMart, has its own fresh dog food and is a healthy and affordable option to keep pups satisfied. Plan A Playdate Inviting a friend or family member who has his or her own furry friend gives your pet an opportunity to play with another animal while you enjoy catching up with your own companion. Whether you're in the backyard or at a dog park, it's an out-of-the-norm experience for pets that allows them to socialize, play and make the day feel special. Just toss out a few toys and let them run or, for a more challenging and engaging day of play, set up an obstacle course for them to explore together. Support A Good Cause If you want to shop for a cause to help other pets while celebrating your own, check out Best Friends Animal Society's line of pet gear, apparel, toys and accessories, exclusively available on: www.Walmart.com - Proceeds support the nonprofit organization and its mission to make every shelter no-kill by 2025. Pet parents can also spread the pet love by using the retailer's Spark Good Round Up at checkout online or in-app to donate to more than 500 pet charities. Keep Your Pet Healthy and Happy Keeping pets healthy is the most important thing a pet parent can do. With innovative cat litter options available in the cat aisle, it's easy to get the scoop on your cat's well-being. For example, some lines make keeping track of your cat's health easier with crystals that detect medical issues by changing colors when something is wrong. She likes to play fetch, will sleep in her own bed at night, is super sweet and is good with other dogs. Handsome Bevo (ID 651929) wants a family to love. After having a home since he was a kitten, this fellow who is just 1 ½ years old now, is in search of another family to call his home. Bevo is a gorgeous cocoa and white, golden-eyed kitty who doesn't understand why he could not move with his family. This has not affected his loving personality, as he still is a curious explorer who thrives with attention. Bevo enjoys interactive play, treats, and a lot of petting and cuddling. • More Than A Meal - Goodman JFS Hand-Delivers Dignity & Joy To Holocaust Survivor This Passover | sun-times

More Than A Meal - Goodman JFS Hand-Delivers Dignity & Joy To Holocaust Survivor This Passover South Florida Sun Times Apr 10, 2025 This Passover, Goodman Jewish Family Services (JFS) Is Uniting Broward County Through A Holiday Initiative To Distribute Over 1,100 Seder Meals And Gift Bags To Those In Need, Including Over 600 To Seniors And Holocaust Survivors Like Viviane Yassur. Beyond tradition and nourishment, these visits offer a vital connection for many seniors—nearly half of whom experience loneliness—making each delivery not just a meal but an emotional and memorable experience for all. Goodman JFS, serving one of the largest Holocaust survivor populations in the U.S., is transforming these deliveries into moments of hope and holiday spirit. Each Kosher meal package includes traditional favorites and a personal note. Passover runs from the evening of April 12th to April 20th. About Viviane Yassur Born in Fes, Morocco in 1939, Viviane's early life was shaped by adversity. As antisemitic laws spread in 1940, her family was forced from their home in Fes to the Jewish Quarter--The Mallah Ghetto, where essentials like bread and milk were rationed. Growing up undernourished, Viviane battled Tuberculosis and various medical conditions from a young age. Most of what she knows about her time in Mallah was told to her by her parents. However, she does have memories of the darkness, consequently causing her to live in fear. She later learned that the darkness stemmed from curfews and blue paper covering the window panes to conceal their presence from the outside. To this day, she is still afraid of the dark. Despite these challenges, Viviane's resilience shone through. After the war, an opportunity emerged for young people to study in the United States and return to their country to teach what they studied. Viviane would go on to earn a full scholarship to UCLA for a certification to teach English. Her time in LA was transformative, living with a Psychiatrist's family and helping care for their daughter while going to school. Returning to Morocco, Viviane taught English briefly before moving to Israel, where she continued her teaching career and met her first husband, an American. The marriage ended in divorce, but she later found love again in Maryland, where she worked as a bookkeeper. Viviane and her second husband eventually retired to Hallandale Beach. She has no children but remains close to her nieces and holds a rich history of memories from a life of resilience and reinvention. This Thursday Goodman JFS leaders will personally visit 86-year-old Holocaust survivor and Hallandale Beach resident Viviane Yassur to deliver her Passover Seder meal and holiday package at Highland Park Village in Hallandale Beach. • Time V.S. Treasure: The Average Floridian Willing To Forgo Over 5 Years Of Life To Live Like A Millionaire

Time V.S. Treasure: The Average Floridian Willing To Forgo Over 5 Years Of Life To Live Like A Millionaire February 21, 2024 Share Imagining a life rich with private yachts, elite jets, and the finest of five-star retreats is something millions of Americans dream of each day. The allure of a millionaire lifestyle, devoid of debt and seemingly absent of stress, is irresistible to many. But what would an everyday American surrender to step into the shoes of a Silicon Valley mogul, a Wall Street titan, or even a Hollywood A-lister? It is a question that: www.WealthofGeeks.com - sought an answer to. They ran a survey of 3,000 respondents asking a hypothetical question: How many years of your life would you willingly trade to enjoy the splendors of a millionaire's existence indefinitely? The findings were eye-opening. On average, Americans would give up 4 years and 11 months of their lives for an endless taste of wealth! Geographical differences showed varied levels of willingness to make this trade-off. For example, residents of New Hampshire, despite their state motto "Live Free or Die," would give up the most time – a whole 7 years and 11 months – to live like millionaires. Given that the average lifespan in New Hampshire is 79 years, they might feel they have extra time to spare. On the flip side, the people of Indiana and North Dakota seem to hold their time on earth dearer than vast riches. The average survey participant from these states would ‘only’ trade half a year for a slice of the millionaire pie. The survey results indicate that Floridians, on average, would surrender a whopping 5 years and 2 months of their life for the opportunity to indulge in the endless luxuries of a millionaire. It seems that for many in Florida, the allure of sipping cocktails on a private beach or jet-setting to exotic destinations is worth the trade-off. Here is an Interactive Map to show how many years of life Americans in each state are willing to trade for a millionaire lifestyle (click on 'embed' to host on your site) Digging deeper, Wealth of Geeks explored what else Floridians would forfeit for a life of extravagance. A surprising 23% would let go of their career goals, which is understandable if financial worries were off the table. More concerning, though, is that 16% would sacrifice quality sleep, and 15% would abandon hobbies, including model train enthusiasts among them. Personal privacy is a commodity 13% would part with, while 11% would forego living close to family. A smaller group, 4%, would be willing to cut ties with friends, assuming they could make new ones in their new swanky circles. However, in a heartwarming revelation, just 1% would trade away the chance at love for the sake of wealth, affirming the belief that money can't buy happiness. Respondents also weighed in on which aspects of a millionaire's life appealed to them most. High-end real estate took the top spot with 27%, followed closely by luxury goods at 23%. The allure of luxury travel enticed 22%, and the idea of personal services like butlers and private chefs appealed to 21%. Meanwhile, 7% were most attracted to the exclusive events that come with a wealthy status. However, nearly half the respondents were skeptical about how accurately the media portrays the millionaire lifestyle, with 48% doubting the reality matches the glitz and glamor often depicted. When asked how adopting such a lavish lifestyle would affect their personal relationships, opinions were mixed. About half predicted a positive outcome, 24% feared a negative impact, and 26% felt things would stay the same. It seems that even when it comes to the prospect of immense wealth, Americans have varied views on what truly matters. "The results of our survey reveal a striking paradox in the American psyche. On the one hand, there's a deep-rooted desire for financial freedom and the amenities that come with it. On the other, for the vast majority there's a poignant awareness that wealth and luxury are not substitutes for genuine relationships and emotional connections,” says Michael Dinich of: www.WealthofGeeks.com . < Previous News Next News >

  • Monday Marked Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom HaShoah | sun-times

Monday Marked Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom HaShoah By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper Apr 16, 2026 Antisemitism Continues To Rise, Echoing Patterns Seen In The 1930’s. Throughout History, Jews Have Faced Persecution, Displacement And Violence. Monday Marked Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom HaShoah. I Attended A Memorial At Beth Torah, Sponsored By Several Jewish Organizations Including Yad Vashem USA. Some Holocaust survivors, now elderly, shared their stories. The ones alive today were children during the Holocaust. They lost their parents, siblings, and entire families. Over six million people died, including 1.5 million children. While some survived concentration camps, others escaped or were hidden, they still live with the horrors and guilt of surviving. Survivor Regina Behar shared her story. What struck me was she said, “my childhood was stolen.” She, along with others, survived thanks to those who risked their lives to protect them. Rabbi Farber shared an interesting story in regards to what is said in the Bible. There is a passage that every generation will see evil. In other words, there will be another snake that comes out of the ground to attack the Jews. During the times of historical struggles and war many leaders did not choose to be leaders. David, Joseph, and Ruth are some of the heroes that stood up against oppression. They stood up, spoke out, and did what was necessary at personal risk to protect their community. Since World War II the message has been Never Again! Since October 7th we have been saying Never Again is Now! I have listened over the years to many survivors. It is always very emotional but necessary. The pain they endured. Their childhood was stolen from them. The sense of guilt for being the only person to survive. Their words are true. Their words are not some made-up stories that Holocaust deniers like to spin. Florida State Representative Fabian Basabe shared such an amazing speech. I was hoping to get a copy of it rather than just taking bits of it for this article. He made it a point to say, “standing up for truth is not political. Standing up for your community is not political. Speaking out and doing the right thing is not political.“ Other speakers, including him, shared the fact that silence and not speaking out equals utter surrender. If not us and now then when. Mayor Steven Meiner from Miami Beach also shared the same message. He told us when he just became Mayor October 7th occurred. He had to deal with protestors. He had to deal with misguided Palestinian supporters blocking roads and attacking local Jewish businesses. He did not back down. He shared his story when he had first started to set up boundaries for the protesters. They were actually sued for free speech. He did not stand down. He won and his ordinance has become a model for other cities. Even to this day any person that spews lies and hate from the podium in his chambers will never sit silent. Lies need to be called out and corrected. I have said this all along. Supporting the fight against hate is extremely important. It is a start. Inaction or indifference allows lies and misinformation to continue and grow into the hate that we are seeing now. I ask everyone if you see a lie, call it out. These lies create stupidity. Stupidity creates ignorant followers. You may not agree with everything but in a world like today, facts of history matter. As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org . • Four Reasons NOT To Sell Florida Real Estate "Furnished" - Part 1

Four Reasons NOT To Sell Florida Real Estate "Furnished" - Part 1 By Christopher Carter - Real Estate Broker Associate June 13, 2024 Share Mostly due to the many seasonal residents and second homes in Florida, thousands of houses and condos here are offered and sold Furnished or Turnkey every year. While this might sound convenient for some sellers and could even appeal to some buyers, it complicates multiple aspects of the transaction. And some of those complications extend long past the sale's closing. Emptying a house or condo before selling can be time-consuming, inconvenient, and cost money, especially for second home sellers who don't plan on returning to Florida from "up north" before the sale closes. Many sellers also seem to think that offering their property Furnished adds value and makes it more attractive to buyers, justifying a higher price. That is not usually true. In most buyers' minds, furnished real estate asking prices already include additional costs which they may or may not be willing to pay. If they don't want the furniture, why should they be forced to pay for it, then go through the effort of giving it away or selling it? Maybe they already have enough furnishings for a new place, maybe what's there isn't in their style and taste. Personal property (like furniture) should never be written-in and added to a residential real estate purchase contract or an addendum to the contract. Even when a buyer wants the furniture and is willing to pay for it, any agreement for leaving personal property in the house or condo should describe that property in a completely separate document unrelated to the contract. The contract's purchase price should never reflect any added or implied value for included personal property. It is important to recognize that fixtures attached to a residence usually convey without issue. These include lighting fixtures, ceiling fans, window treatments, wall TV brackets, built-in shelving and cabinets, storm shutters, and similar items that are considered part of the house or condo, and specified in the contract's pre-printed language. It is widely accepted that kitchen appliances and water heaters are part of a house or condominium sale. Laundry washers and dryers are included if the contract being used specifically mentions them (some do, some don't). It is important to carefully read the purchase contract to identify which fixtures and appliances convey with the sale. Today we are discussing 2 of the main reasons that furniture and other personal property complicate real estate deals: • Financing • Appraisals & CMAs (current and future) In Part 2 we will go into the reasons which result in higher costs to both sellers and buyers in Florida: • State "Doc Stamps" - transfer taxes on residential real estate • Property taxes - higher from the start due to inflated purchase price There is even a 5th reason in some circumstances: • Sales tax on the personal property's separate value (yes, really) Also in Part 2 we will discuss a few methods to let furniture and personal property remain in the house or condo without violating all the reasons not to do it! Mortgage Financing Banks and Mortgage Companies lend money to buy real estate, not furniture and personal property. In the signed and recorded mortgage document, buyers/borrowers pledge the house or condo to the lender as collateral for the loan. This means if the borrower defaults for any of the reasons laid out in the mortgage agreement, the lender can start the foreclosure process to take back the property. Personal property can be physically removed from a residence at any time, and lenders need to know that if they have to foreclose, all the pledged collateral for the loan amount will still be there. Houses, condos, and the fixtures attached to them usually stay where they were when purchased, which is not always the case with couches, beds and dressers, golf carts, cookware, or pool deck lounge chairs. This is where people (usually real estate licensees) complicate things. When they include furniture, dishes, artwork, towels, golf carts, or write "See attached inventory sheet" in the listing, on the contract, or an addendum, the buyer's mortgage lender will likely red flag the deal and require removal of any reference to personal property, causing delays to the closing timeline. If something didn't have value, it would have been thrown out before the house or condo was offered for sale. Some sellers try to justify including furniture and personal property by saying it is just "for convenience," that any remaining personal property has no contributory value to the transaction. This comment usually involves a wink and a nod between all parties. Everything has value. There are used furniture stores in just about every city and town charging money for items that used to be in other peoples' residences. Lenders require independent verification of a property's value (an Appraisal) before approving a purchase mortgage. This is to establish the Loan-To-Value (LTV) ratio, an important measure in their risk management. To calculate LTV, lenders divide the loan amount by the lower of the contract price or the appraised value. More on Appraisals in a minute. When furniture and other personal property are included in the purchase price, how much of the loan amount is for the house or condo, and how much is for the contents? Another reason mortgage lenders don't allow personal property on a real estate contract is that it is often seen as an added inducement to purchase. This means that a seller may have included personal property to "sweeten the deal," encouraging buyers to make an offer they may not have made without the added value incentive. Appraisals & CMAs As mentioned above, lenders don't just accept the contract price as a property's current value when committing to lend money. An Appraisal is an independent opinion of current real property market value performed under a strict set of standards and methods by a State-licensed Appraiser. Appraisers apply the Sales Comparison Approach which involves comparing similar properties sold within the last 4-6 months or so (comparables). For real estate Appraisals, personal property must be backed out of the purchase price when it is mentioned or referred to in the contract. Licensed Appraisers look closely at the transaction details on how those comp properties were sold. Furniture or other personal property on the contract and/or the MLS listing causes them to investigate further and subtract value from the settled sale price in order to give that particular comp an accurate usable value. When there is no stated value to mention personal property, Appraisers put a reasonable replacement value on it, then deduct that from the comp property's contract sale price. Note that replacement cost is deducted (usually higher), not a rough-guessed value for used furniture (usually lower). Here is an earlier article on property Appraisals: Understanding The Basics Of Property Appraisals - https://thefloridarealestateblog.com/f/understanding-the-basics-of-property-appraisals-- A Comparative Market Analysis (CMA) is an informal range of probable property prices (not values) prepared by real estate licensees to use when talking with sellers and buyers about asking and offering prices. CMAs use previously closed sale prices from the local MLS. Comparisons and adjustments between the subject property and comps are up to the individual preparing the CMA, with NO strict guidelines and standards like there are in Appraisals. It is up to the individual licensee's discretion as to what properties are similar enough to be used and what adjustments are made between them. Real estate licensees and online platforms are known to focus on number of rooms, square footage, updates/upgrades, and features rather than closed transaction details. Rarely do Sales Associate-generated CMAs or online AVMs (Automated Valuation Models) take into account whether any comps used were sold Furnished, Turnkey, or with Seller concessions to the deal. Disregarding closed transaction details can significantly affect CMA and AVM results, and buyers need accurate information when making a decision to purchase Florida real estate. Would they offer the same price if they knew some of the properties used for comparison were sold with furniture? So far we have briefly discussed current and future valuation problems when personal property is included on a real estate sales contract. In Part 2, we will discuss additional costs incurred when personal property is made part of a real estate purchase and sale - closing costs, transfer taxes, increased property taxes, and even State sales tax on the itemized personal property. Stay tuned, Part 2 comes out in a week or so. Editor's Note: Christopher Carter is NOT an attorney. He does not give legal advice. Cafe Avanti seamlessly blends rustic charm, elegance, and vibrancy to create a dining experience that feels both timeless and inviting. The lively backdrop of an authentic Italian kitchen fills the air with the vibrant energy of great food and warm hospitality. At its heart, Cafe Avanti is a family-owned and operated restaurant where personal connections are as integral to the experience as the food itself. This month, Cafe Avanti celebrates its 35th anniversary, marking a milestone not only for its dedication to culinary excellence but also for its unwavering connection to the families and community it serves. The founding of Cafe Avanti began as a dream for Luis Fuentes, a Cuban immigrant who found his passion for the business in the bustling kitchens of Boston’s North End. There, he fell in love with the simplicity and tradition of the Italian way. When Luis relocated to Miami, he envisioned a space where food, family, and community could come together — a place where every meal felt like a celebration of life’s most important connections. Not long after, he turned that vision into reality. “For me, Cafe Avanti represents the true American dream,” says Luis Fuentes. “Starting with a vision and a lot of hard work, we built a place that has become a home for the community. To see generations of families continue to dine with us is the greatest reward.” At its heart, Cafe Avanti is a family-owned and operated restaurant, where personal connection is as integral to the experience as the food itself. Since joining the team in 2010, Jessica Fuentes, who spent eight years in the restaurant business in Boston, has brought her passion for hospitality and family tradition to every aspect of the business. This summer, Jessica’s brother, Nicolas Fuentes, joined the team fresh out of college, eager to learn the business and continue the family legacy. “One of us is always at the restaurant,” Jessica explains. “Being greeted by my dad is part of the experience. We want our guests to feel like they’re visiting family when they walk through our doors.” My dad has always said, “If I make a friend a day, that’s 365 friends at the end of the year.” As one of the city’s most enduring landmarks, Cafe Avanti is one of the original Italian restaurants in Miami’s culinary scene. The Proof Is in the Parm, Cafe Avanti’s menu is one for the Ages, a love letter to Northern Italian cuisine crafted with care and tradition. The Chicken Parmigiana, a golden, cheesy masterpiece, on the menu since day one, remains the most beloved dish. It’s the comfort food that transcends time, offering a bite of nostalgia with every forkful. The favorites list is long; a few standouts include: Veal Meatballs, delicious over pasta, Caesar Salad or on their own, Branzino: Grilled Mediterranean Sea Bass in a Lemon, White Wine and Butter Sauce, topped with Capers and Mushrooms, Linguine Carbonara: In a decadent Cream Sauce with Pancetta and Onions. Every dish tells a story of tradition, evoking the warmth of an Italian kitchen and the memories of meals shared with loved ones. Adding to its allure is a cozy bar, where guests love to gather, share stories, and enjoy some of the best Martinis in town alongside selections from an extensive Wine List. Whether indulging in a classic Dry Martini, a rich Espresso Martini, or an after-dinner Limoncello, the bar offers the perfect setting for unwinding and connecting. Wine enthusiasts will appreciate highlights like Ca’ del Bosco Franciacorta (Italy), a sparkling favorite for celebrations; Chianti, Marchesi Antinori (Toscana), a bold red perfect with hearty pasta dishes; Brunello, IL Poggione (Montalcino), a smooth and elegant choice for Veal and Beef; and Sauvignon Blanc, Cakebread (Napa), a refreshing white ideal for Seafood dishes. Whether enjoying a perfectly mixed Martini or savoring a carefully selected wine, the bar at Cafe Avanti is the ideal place to relax and enjoy the Italian dining experience. Over the years, Cafe Avanti has become more than just a restaurant—it’s a living piece of Miami Beach history. Generations of families have dined here, turning first dates into anniversaries and introducing their children—and now grandchildren—to its welcoming charm and signature dishes. To accommodate guests celebrating life’s special moments, Cafe Avanti expanded to include an intimate bar and private dining spaces designed for gatherings of 12, 35, or 80 guests. These spaces seamlessly blend warmth and elegance, featuring exposed brick walls for a cozy, homey feel and glittering chandeliers paired with Greco-Roman stained glass for a sophisticated yet inviting ambiance, perfect for everything from intimate dinners to grand celebrations. “Cafe Avanti is the Cheers of Miami Beach,” says Jessica Fuentes.“On any given day, you’re sure to run into someone you know.” The staff has worked here for years, and their unwavering dedication and consistency make this place so special. “It’s where locals hang out, families connect, and memories are made — one plate of Chicken Parm, one Martini, and one glass of wine at a time.” This December, Cafe Avanti turns 35 and invites everyone to join the celebration with a special “Early Bird Anniversary Menu.”Available from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the Three-Course Meal includes: a choice of Soup or Salad, The Signature Chicken Parmigiana, and a sweet finish with Tiramisu; priced at $35, it’s a nostalgic nod to the restaurant’s opening year and a heartfelt thank-you to the community that has supported it through the decades. Together, the Fuentes family ensures that Cafe Avanti remains authentic to what has made them a staple. With every visit, bite, and sip, Cafe Avanti feels like coming home. Cafe Avanti is open, Sunday - Thursday: 5:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m., Friday - Saturday: 5:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. located 732 West 41st Street Miami Beach, Florida 33140. • Control 'Bad' Cholesterol | sun-times

Control 'Bad' Cholesterol By Family Features Sep 10, 2025 Getting your Cholesterol checked, and talking with your doctor about steps to control High Cholesterol, could save your life. If you, or someone you love, have experienced a Heart Attack or Stroke, you know how life-changing those moments can be. What many don't realize is high LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) Cholesterol often plays a silent role behind the scenes. Taking control of Cholesterol numbers starts by knowing your LDL number and working with your doctor to put together an appropriate treatment plan. Your body produces all the Cholesterol it needs to stay healthy. Cholesterol helps make new cells, some Hormones and substances that aid in food digestion. However, having too much Cholesterol can contribute to serious health risks. Knowing more about Cholesterol and its role in your body and overall health can help you protect yourself from potential life-threatening conditions like Heart Attack or Stroke - even if you've already had one. Learn more with this information from the American Heart Association's "Lower Your LDL Cholesterol Now" initiative, nationally sponsored by Amgen, so you can take control of your heart health. Know Your Numbers Keeping tabs on your Cholesterol is an important step toward managing potentially serious risks to your Heart, Brain and overall health. LDL Cholesterol, also known as "bad" Cholesterol, can cause fatty buildup called Plaque in your arteries. Nearly 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. has high LDL (bad) Cholesterol, but many don't know until it's too late. Having too much LDL (bad) Cholesterol can silently increase your risk for Heart Attack and Stroke when it goes unchecked, but you have the power to change that. "A lot of people don't realize they have high LDL (bad) Cholesterol because it doesn't have symptoms," said Dr. Amit Khera, American Heart Association National Volunteer Expert and Cardiologist. "That's why I always encourage my patients to get their Cholesterol checked and have honest conversations with their doctors. Knowing your LDL number is one of the most important things you can do to protect your Heart." Studies show an LDL at or below 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) is ideal for most adults. If you have a history of Heart Attack or Stroke and are already on a Cholesterol-lowering medication, your doctor may aim for your LDL to be 70 mg/dL or lower. Get Tested Don't wait; schedule a Cholesterol test as soon as possible. High Cholesterol often has no symptoms, so it's important to get your Cholesterol checked even if you feel fine. In fact, the American Heart Association recommends all adults 20 and older have their LDL (bad) Cholesterol checked every 4-6 years as long as risk remains low. If you have had a Heart Attack or Stroke, talk to your doctor about the right frequency of testing. A blood test to measure your Cholesterol numbers, called a "fasting" or "non-fasting Lipid profile or panel," assesses several types of fat in the blood. The test gives four results: total Cholesterol, LDL (bad) Cholesterol, HDL (good) Cholesterol and Triglycerides (blood fats). Talk to Your Doctor Your doctor is there to help you reach your health goals, including keeping your LDL (bad) Cholesterol at a healthy number. Making decisions together is the best way to create a treatment plan you'll be more likely to stick to. If you don't understand something, ask for further clarification. Discuss your risk factors, including your personal and family medical history. Having a candid conversation about your lifestyle can also help pinpoint potential risk factors and areas you can work to reduce your risk and improve your health. If your LDL Cholesterol number is high, your doctor may recommend treatment options. Together, you can review the benefits, risks and side effects to decide on the treatment plan that works best for you. Take Action Early The sooner you manage high LDL (bad) Cholesterol, the more you can reduce your risk of Heart Attack and Stroke. Proactively monitoring and taking steps to slow or reverse your numbers can halt or delay buildup in your arteries. In addition, treatment options can be more effective when a high LDL number is detected early. Learn more about the steps you can take to combat high LDL (bad) Cholesterol at: www.heart.org/LDL . Living with High LDL (Bad) Cholesterol If your LDL (bad) Cholesterol is elevated, lifestyle changes can help lower your overall risk of Heart Disease, but may not be enough to counteract individual risk factors such as genetics and family history. Check your LDL (bad) Cholesterol number then talk to your doctor about next steps, including these changes to take back control of heart health. Eat a Heart-Healthy Diet From a dietary standpoint, the best way to lower your Cholesterol is to follow a balanced diet, which is low in Saturated Fats, Trans Fats and Cholesterol. Following a heart-healthy diet means limiting your intake of fatty meats and dairy products made with whole milk. Choose lean cuts of meat and skim, low-fat or fat-free dairy products instead. It also means limiting fried foods and cooking with healthy oils, such as liquid vegetable oils instead of butter or coconut oil, which are high in Saturated Fat and Cholesterol. Be More Physically Active A sedentary lifestyle lowers HDL (good) Cholesterol. Less HDL means there's less good Cholesterol to remove bad Cholesterol from your arteries. At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise a week is enough to lower both Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure. Brisk walking, swimming, bicycling or even vigorous yard work can fit the bill. In addition, the American Heart Association recommends adding moderate- to high-intensity muscle-strengthening activity - such as resistance training or weightlifting - at least two days each week. Quit Smoking When a person with unhealthy Cholesterol numbers also smokes or vapes, the risk of Heart Disease increases even more. Smoking also compounds other risk factors for Heart Disease, such as High Blood Pressure and Diabetes. By quitting, smokers can lower their Triglycerides and increase their HDL Cholesterol numbers. Quitting can also help reduce damage and improve how the arteries function. Lose Weight Living with excess weight or obesity tends to raise the chances of increasing LDL (bad) Cholesterol and lowering good Cholesterol. Weight loss of even 5-10% may help improve some Cholesterol numbers and other Heart Disease risk factors. Source: American Heart Association Previous Next
