  • Pet Diarrhea: When to Head to The Vet

Pet Diarrhea: When to Head to The Vet June 8, 2021 Share If a pet has a sudden bout of diarrhea, there are some at-home measures that pet owners can take to help their loved ones. Diarrhea is a natural part of life, all pets (and pet owners) have had it, at some point. While diarrhea can be smelly, messy and potentially, embarrassing, Dr. Michael Hung, a small animal internal medicine resident at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, offers the run down on what causes it and when a pet owner should be worried. Diarrhea is defined as loose, watery, more frequent bowel movements and simply indicates, that something is irritating the GI tract, according to Hung. “It occurs when something either impairs the intestine’s ability to absorb water or causes the intestine to secrete more water,” he said. “This can be from a problem originating within the intestines—such as parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, a sudden change in diet or even, stress.” When diarrhea is caused by something obvious, such as a pet getting into the garbage or eating too many table scraps, intestinal worms or stress from a recent move, the episode passes quickly, it can be considered normal and self-resolving. “However, diarrhea can also reflect a more serious issue elsewhere in the body,” Hung warns. More sinister causes may include: infectious diseases, the ingestion of poisonous substances, a variety of illnesses, such as: Kidney Disease or even, Cancer. “While there are serious causes for diarrhea, the majority of diarrhea cases are uncomplicated and do not require hospitalization,” Hung said. If a pet has a sudden bout of diarrhea, there are some at-home measures that pet owners can take to help their loved ones. Hung says that pet owners can make sure that plenty of water is available to their pets, although, they should never force feed them with water. A bland and low-fat diet, can also be offered for a short period of time. Examples include: shredded, non-seasoned, fully cooked chicken breast or cottage cheese mixed with cooked, plain white rice. Since this diet is not balanced, however, it should not be offered for more than, a couple of days. Pet owners also can try to prevent diarrhea by making sure their pets are on appropriate, thoroughly cooked and balanced diets. “Treats (including human food) should be kept to a minimum,” Hung said. “Any changes to diets, should occur gradually over a couple of days. Pets should also be kept on a consistent parasite preventative regimen and a vaccine schedule.” Occasional diarrhea is unavoidable, a pet may be able to overcome minor bouts on their own or with the help of their owners. “Ultimately, the cure for diarrhea depends on its cause,” Hung said, adding that some pets may need to see a veterinarian for medical help. “Any diarrhea that is profuse and watery, mostly bloody or that lasts longer than seven to 14 days, should be addressed by a veterinarian,” Hung advises. “Because diarrhea can be a warning sign of a systemic disease, if not addressed in a timely manner, these systemic diseases can progress and become harder to treat.” Ongoing diarrhea can result in weight loss, nutrient deficiencies and dehydration. Signs of dehydration, including lethargy, inappetence and unwillingness to drink, also, indicate the need for veterinary attention. “That said, if your pet has diarrhea, but is eating and drinking and seems like themselves, don't panic! Although a pet with diarrhea in the house can certainly be stressful, it is not necessarily an emergency,” he said. “You can schedule an appointment with your family veterinarian and they can help you decide, what is needed for your pet.” < Previous News Next News >

  • Cannabis Straight Talk from Miracle Leaf

Cannabis Straight Talk from Miracle Leaf PROFILES April 24, 2022 Share The annual National Cannabis Day, which is observed on, April 20 has just passed and Geo Tejada of the Miracle Leaf Cannabis Health Center in Hallandale Beach seeks to set the record straight on his products. “There’s a lot of confusion about Cannabis,” he says. “People want to know why they should consider the use of Cannabis. Where can they buy these products? Is Cannabis legal in Florida? Do people need a license to buy it? How can Cannabis products be used?” Tejada explains that Cannabis products come from the Cannabis Sativa Plant, a widely cultivated crop around the world. “It exists in multiple varieties,” he says. THC Vs. CBD Some varieties of Cannabis have Psychoactive Properties that produce a euphoric reaction. They contain a relatively high concentration of a substance called Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The common name for such varieties is Marijuana. Florida Law allows the use of “Medical Marijuana” that is high in THC for certain qualifying conditions, including: Cancer, Crohn’s Disease, Epilepsy, Glaucoma, HIV-AIDS, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Patients must obtain a Medical Marijuana Card and a recommendation from a Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine who have taken a course and passed an exam to receive certification as a Marijuana Physician. Upon being approved, patients join a registry and receive a Medical Marijuana Card. Then they may purchase their recommended THC Products from a Dispensary Licensed by the State. “Today,” Tejada says, “over 500,000 patients are registered in Florida.” The rules are different for other varieties of Cannabis, known as Hemp, that contain only trace amounts of THC. During World War II, the U.S. Government used Hemp to make canvas, rope and uniforms. Today it is a source of products as diverse as biofuel, cement, cosmetics, clothing, insulation, paper and textiles. “Hemp became a Federally Approved Crop under the 2018 Farm Bill and all of our products are Hemp-Based,” Tejada says. “Their primary substance, Cannabidiol (CBD), lacks euphoric properties but still can alleviate symptoms of anxiety, pain and stress associated with a variety of medical conditions. “You don’t need a Medical Marijuana Card and a Recommendation to buy the products we sell at Health Centers such as Miracle Leaf,” he emphasizes. To Smoke Or Not The discussion of Cannabis typically revolves around smoking the flowers, but that’s not the only way to use Cannabis Products. Hemp-Based CBD Products in particular have blossomed (pun intended) in recent years, offering a wide variety of consumption alternatives. Tejada lists Sublingual Tinctures (drops of liquid under the tongue), “Vapes” for inhalation, Edible Gummies and Topical Pain-relief Creams that are popular with the elderly. Cannabis also is a major ingredient in Alice B. Toklas’ Brownies. Alice was the life-mate of Author Gertrude Stein, who reigned over the Parisian Literary Scene between the two World Wars. Google “Alice B. Toklas’ Brownies” to find thousands of entries about this confection. If you make these brownies with Marijuana, limit consumption and beware of the unintended side effects. Hemp is kinder and gentler in this regard. Tejada says his Miracle Leaf store in Hallandale Beach has over 2,000 regular customers. Some are Tobacco smokers who view Miracle Leaf’s CBD Products as a desirable alternative, while others use CBD Products while waiting for their medical Marijuana Cards and Recommendations. “We’re not a Medical Marijuana Dispensary,” he emphasizes, “but we do have Certified Marijuana Physicians on staff to provide assistance to people who come in with specific medical needs. “Most of our customers are older than 45. Cannabis is not just for the young. The elderly have been able to connect with the use of Cannabis. We can’t make medical claims for a cure, but we have been able to help many patients with medical conditions to alleviate their symptoms.” For Fido and Tabby Many pet owners give CBD Products to their dogs and cats, Tejada says. Signs your Canine and Feline friends may benefit from CBD include Arthritis and other Inflammatory Ailments, Chronic Pain, Digestive Tract Upsets, Kidney and Liver Ailments, Separation Anxiety when you leave home and the fear of thunder and other loud noises. Also, while it’s not a cure, CBD may prolong and improve the quality of life for elderly Dogs and Cats with Cancer and other Terminal Conditions. CBD Products sold specifically for Pets include Capsules and Chews, Peanut Butter, Tinctures, Treats and Topical Preparations such as shampoos and balms. Resist the temptation to give your Pets the same products you use, Tejada advises. Look for products specifically formulated and lab tested for Pets and Organically Sourced, which mean they come from Pesticide-FREE Hemp Plants. Dosage depends on your Pet’s size, weight and individual body chemistry. While product packaging and your Veterinarian may offer guidelines, every Pet is different, so start slowly and work up to an Optimal Dosage. National Cannabis Day National Cannabis Day originated with five California high school students who met at 4:20 p.m. on April 20th, 1971, to smoke Marijuana. Today it’s an International Counter-Culture Holiday and an opportunity for the Cannabis Industry to showcase its products and services. “The Industry gives back to the community with big promotions and sales,” Tejada says, adding that Miracle Leaf always participates in the observance in a big way. • Protect Your Right To Vote, Elections Update And Holidays

Protect Your Right To Vote, Elections Update And Holidays Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper October 31, 2024 Share Early voting will continue at our Cultural Community Center until Sunday, November 3rd. Residents registered to vote in Broward can vote from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at this location or the others throughout Broward County for more information visit: https://Browardvotes.gov . It is too late to request an absentee-Vote by Mail Ballot the deadline was October 24th. I would suggest that if you have one do not mail it, drop it off at one of the early voting sites. The mail is slow and if it is not received by 7:00 p.m. on November 5th, it will not be counted. Many of the voting sites are slow and steady. At our voting site at the Cultural Center there have not been lines or waiting. Many voters have been able to walk in, check in, vote and leave. You will need one or two forms of Valid and Current Photo Identification that include a signature. Official Broward County Supervisor of Elections Staff are standing by and ready to assist. As with every election there has been drama created by candidates that do not understand there are rules. The rules have become strict over the past years. Many for a compelling cause. There is a 150-foot rule when it comes to campaigning at polling sites. This is to prevent voter interference and intimidation. Campaigns may share material with you only with your consent and may not ask One candidate was banned from the site due to interference with an election officer. The candidate was allowed back on to city property but was warned that they would be permanently removed if they broke the law again. You have the right to vote. If you have any concerns, issues, or complaints related to an election experience, such as difficulties at polling locations, irregularities you might have observed, or other, you should report them by sending an email to: elections@browardvotes.gov . In your email, include relevant details such as your full name, voter information, a description of the issue, and any evidence or documentation that may help the election officials address your complaint effectively. If you have been the victim of intimidation or threatened by text, phone, email, or in person for your Vote Provisions exist in law, including not limited to, for Felony Offenses for deprivation of or interference with voting (Section 104.0515, Fla. Stat.), intimidation and suppression (Section 104.0615, Fla. Stat.), influencing or interfering with voting (Section 104.061, Fla. Stat.), threatening to control votes of employees (Section 104.081, Fla. Stat.). Contact immediately your local Law Enforcement, Supervisor of Elections' office and/or the Division of Elections (and file an election fraud complaint). Campaign sign laws are a bit different in every city. Some cities do not allow candidate signs at all. Some like us regulate them. It needs to be noted that individual property owners can put up their own sign supporting a candidate or candidates. Signs may be put on your property only with your permission. This is FREE Speech. We have candidates that are claiming their rights are being violated but they simply do not understand the laws. These types of cases have been decided by the Supreme Court. Each candidate executes a sign permit with the rules and regulations before being able to put up signs. The other issue that needs to be clarified is that employees while working or on duty as an officer cannot campaign for candidates. They can campaign in their own time and on behalf of their unions. This is solely up to the individual. I have seen many elections that have been contentious but not one like this where there is total lack of understanding the laws and not respecting them. It has been an extremely challenging two weeks around Hallandale. Our multi diverse city has had many events take place. On October 14th, our city held a Day of Remembrance for October 7th. The event was postponed due to the weather. The art created by children ages 7 to 9 years of age from Sderot Israel, our Sister City is still on display at our Cultural Community Center. Vice Mayor Anabelle Lima-Taub did an amazing job organizing the gathering. October also marked the High Holiday for our Jewish brothers and sisters. It began with Rosh Hashanah the beginning of the Jewish New Year that lasts for eight days until Yom Kippur. These days mark the period when the Jewish people reflect on the past year and ask for forgiveness for all their transgressions. At the conclusion of the 8 days, they ask to be granted another year of life. Obviously, this is an oversimplification of the most significant holiday for Jews around the world. The next holiday is Sukkot where Jews build what is called a Sukkah. It is a handmade, three-sided with wood, grass structure that symbolizes the makeshift tents formed when the Jews wandered in the desert for 40 years of wandering until they built the temple. Families eat and celebrate in the sukkah. It is an autumn festival where we celebrate the harvest from the summer crops. The next holiday that immediately follows with Simchat Torah is the celebration of receiving the Torah from God. It is important to understand that just like there are many different Christian groups there are three Jewish groups. Orthodox, Conservative and Reformed. In our city we have many Orthodox Temples under the Chabad. Orthodox Jews do not drive to temple nor are they to perform labor or activities other than pray during the Sabbath. This is why we see many smaller temples within our community. We also are seeing more celebrations which create our rich culturally diverse city. The harvest festivals are rich in history. Before Judaism there were pagan harvest festivals. We call it Halloween now. People would place whatever they grew and harvested outside their homes to make sure the spirits would remain at rest; in Christian religion the celebration was moved to November 1st and it's called Saint Day to Celebrate all those that had passed on the year before and all the Saints. Many of our friends and neighbors will be celebrating Halloween on the 31st. Our city will hold our celebration at OB Johnson Park from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Whatever holiday you have celebrated or will be celebrating, I hope they are blessed. As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org . • Tis The Season For Holiday Safety & Fun - The City of Hollywood Has Something Hot To Tell You

Tis The Season For Holiday Safety & Fun - The City of Hollywood Has Something Hot To Tell You December 19, 2024 Share The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and warmth. Families gather around festive decorations, twinkling lights, and the comforting glow of candles and in some areas fireplaces. It’s fun to decorate for the winter holidays, but holiday decorations can increase your risk for a home fire. As you deck the halls this holiday season, the Department of Fire Rescue & Beach Safety has some tips to ensure your holidays are not only festive but also fire-safe. Candle Caution: Almost half of the home decoration fires in December are started by candles, with Christmas Day as the peak day for candle fires. Think about using battery-operated flameless candles. Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that burns. Mindful Lighting: Inspect holiday lights for frayed wires, broken bulbs, or any signs of damage before hanging them. Replace damaged lights immediately. Be sure to turn off holiday lights and decorations before going to bed or leaving the house. Consider using a timer to automate this process, ensuring your home is not unnecessarily exposed to electrical risks. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for the number of light strands to connect. Tree Safety: A dry Christmas tree can burn very hot and very fast. Make sure your tree is at least 3 feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles or heat vents. Also, make sure your tree does not block exits. More than one in every five Christmas tree fires were caused by a heat source too close to the tree. Get rid of your tree after Christmas or when it is dry. (See below for tree recycling locations in Hollywood). For more information on how to prevent winter fires, visit: https://www.usfa.fema.gov/prevention/home-fires/prevent-fires/holiday/ - And at: https://www.nfpa.org/education-and-research/home-fire-safety/put-a-freeze-on-winter-fires Chip-a-Tree After the holidays, Broward County Parks & Recreation is offering the annual Chip-a-Tree tree recycling program, where you can bring your tree to one of multiple Broward County parks to be recycled for free.
