  • Concerts At The ArtsPark & Commission In The Community

Concerts At The ArtsPark & Commission In The Community May 2, 2024 Share Bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy this show at the ArtsPark at Young Circle in Downtown Hollywood. Two exceptional bands will take the stage this weekend - Cortadito & Samambaia. Cortadito Since its origins twelve years ago, the evolution of Cortadito has led it to become one of the torchbearers of a pop culture phenomenon that is two centuries strong. A traditional folk and acoustic band that focuses on performing one of the earliest styles of Cuban country music known as Son (pronounced sOwn), their sound can best be described as reminiscent of the famed Buena Vista Social Club. This dynamic, Miami-based ensemble has been joined on stage by Grammy and Latin Grammy Award-Winning Singer Aymeé Nuviola, World-Renowned Flutist Nestor Torres, and has performed with legendary member of Buena Vista Social Club, Eliades Ochoa. In October of 2022, the group was invited to perform at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Jose Elias founded the band alongside Julio Cesar Rodriguez Delet, from Santiago de Cuba, in November of 2011 after a 12-year stint with Conjunto Progreso that garnered him a Grammy nomination for the album Masters of Cuban Son. The duo was an instant success and was celebrated for their ability to create a big band sound with such a small lineup. They released their first CD titled Abriendo Caminos in 2012, which featured an original composition by each of the artists “Delicias Caribeña” (Elias) and “Te Lo Perdiste” (Delet). In 2018, the group released their follow-up CD titled Canciones de Julio, which included five original songs and featured the participation of Double Bass Player Yorgis Goiricelaya and Roinel Vega, who performed with the likes of Albita Rodriguez and Oscar De Leon. The current lineup includes Bass Player Alberto Pantaleon, who has toured with the Afro-Cuban All Stars and is currently touring with Eliades Ochoa in the United States. The group also features trumpet player Tony Perigo, who started his professional career at the age of 17 playing with Cuban songstress Omara Portuondo. Rounding off the group on percussion is Santiago McCook, who is referred to as "El Pulpo" (the octopus), due to his one-of-a-kind multi-percussion setup that allows him to play the role of three musicians in one. Next month the group will release their first full-length feature album titled “The Guajiro Triangle.” The album will feature a variety of original compositions that celebrate the traditions of Cuban music in the modern world. The triangle represents the connection between Santiago de Cuba, Havana, and Miami, the group's home and final destination of this musical journey that was established two centuries ago. Samambaia Samambaia captures the essence of classic samba with an elegant and sophisticated twist. Fronted by the enchanting vocals of Rose Max, this ensemble features the elegance of the seven-string guitar, a masterful pandeiro player, an expressive percussive flutist, and a diverse array of Afro-Brazilian percussion. Their music not only embraces the traditional Samba Raiz but elevates it with a contemporary and polished flair that appeals to both purists and new audiences alike. Concerts at the ArtsPark is a free series of family-friendly events at Hollywood’s ArtsPark Amphitheater at Young Circle (Hollywood Boulevard at US-1). • Mom's Brunch Made Easy: It's Simple and It's Scrumptious

Mom's Brunch Made Easy: It's Simple and It's Scrumptious Family Features April 21, 2022 Share A Mother's Day brunch doesn't need to be fancy, plus it gives mom a chance to sleep in. With its prime positioning between breakfast and lunch, brunch is a more casual and lighter alternative to the typical lunch or dinner. When charged with planning this for mom, a little pre-planning can go a long way toward ensuring your brunch get-together is as simple as it is scrumptious. Get creative with decor. When prepping your tablescape, think outside the box. Opt for unexpected serving dishes such as tartlet tins and vases, and transfer syrups and jams from their everyday containers to glass bowls or creamers. Fresh flowers and produce can add natural pops of color to the table and a bowl of fruit can make for an eye-catching centerpiece. Plan a variety of dishes. Make sure you have a mix of both sweet and savory dishes on the menu that can please a wide variety of palates. Earmarking some recipes that can be made ahead, like pastries and casseroles, can be a simple way to avoid waking up extra early to prepare. Save the morning of your event for dishes that are best served fresh, like this Herbed Spanish Omelet, which features potatoes; fresh, spring herbs; and red onions, and packs protein, B-vitamins and cancer-protective phytochemicals. Serve it buffet-style. Setting your spread out on the counter and allowing family to help themselves not only makes it easier for the family to relax, but it allows everyone to customize their meals as they wish and gives the gathering a more casual vibe. Try themed stations, such as a coffee or mimosa bar, parfait bar or bread bar, in addition to more traditional dishes to let everyone take the customization to the next level. For more brunch ideas and recipes, visit http://www.culinary.net/ Herbed Spanish Omelet Reprinted with permission from the American Institute for Cancer Research Servings: 4 1 pound potatoes, peeled and diced or shredded water 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup diced red onion 2 cloves garlic, minced 4 large whole eggs, lightly beaten 2 egg whites, lightly beaten 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh basil 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives salt, to taste (optional) fresh herb sprigs, for garnish (optional) Place potatoes in large pan. • Construction On Ives Dairy Road: The Northeast 203rd Street/Ives Dairy Road Intersection Improvement Project Is Underway

Construction On Ives Dairy Road: The Northeast 203rd Street/Ives Dairy Road Intersection Improvement Project Is Underway February 3, 2023 Share So you take Ives Dairy Road each day and you notice a lot of construction happening in the area, so what's going on? The Florida Department Of Transportation (FDOT) started an intersection project along Northeast 203rd Street/Ives Dairy Road during the middle of November. The project will increase safety and ease traffic flow through this busy intersection by elevating westbound Northeast 203rd Street over the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) tracks and West Dixie Highway, constructing a pedestrian bridge over the FEC tracks, widening the roadway along southbound US-1 and eastbound Northeast 203rd Street, including the bridge, improving drainage along the corridor, updating pedestrian ramps, signage, pavement markings, lighting and installing a bicycle lane along West Dixie Highway, between Northeast 206th Street and Northeast 202nd Street. Travel lanes shall be closed during non peak hours on nonevent days. Non Peak hours are: 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., weekdays - 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weekends - 9:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., Monday through Sunday nights - 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., Friday and Saturday nights. This project will require nighttime full intersection closures that will be noticed in advance and expected to be completed in the summer of 2024. Florida is home to over 22 million residents and in just the first three quarters of 2022, we had nearly 105 million visitors to our state and Aventura has certainly seen a large part of that growth. In 2022, Florida experienced the largest net migration in the country at 1.9%, meaning that Florida’s infrastructure must accommodate more people than ever before. The 20 projects included in the proposal will build more resilient Transportation Infrastructure, which is important to the integrity of roadways and corridors especially during severe weather events such as Hurricanes. Due to this huge growth Governor Ron DeSantis recently announced the Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiatives, a $4 Billion Investment, which will be leveraged for a total of $7 Billion, to expedite projects that will alleviate congestion and prioritize safety. “This proposal will break through bureaucracy that often slows down Infrastructure Projects and allow FDOT to target projects that will ease congestion across the state," said Governor Ron DeSantis. "Expediting these projects will bring them to completion more than a decade ahead of schedule.” “Governor DeSantis’ Moving Florida Forward Proposal is truly historic and the projects included will help relieve congestion while also focusing on safety, resiliency, the supply chain and economic growth. These are important for Floridians’ quality of life and to ensure we maintain a strong transportation system to keep Florida moving forward,” said FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E. “The Department has worked closely with communities and our partners through the years to plan and prepare these projects for construction. Receiving this funding will allow the vision of each project to become a reality in the immediate future to better meet the growing demands in communities throughout the state. Our team is prepared and ready to work with the Legislature to deliver these critical projects and strengthen Florida’s Transportation Infrastructure.” FDOT will continue working on projects currently planned in the existing FDOT Five-Year Work Program in addition to projects included in the Moving Florida Forward package. • State Of The City Of Hallandale Beach Part 6 | sun-times

State Of The City Of Hallandale Beach Part 6 By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper Jul 10, 2025 Speaking Of Codes, We Are In The Final Phases Of Our Code Rewrite. There Is Still Time To Let Us Know What Changes You Would Like To See. There Will Be Another Round Of Follow-Ups With Our Consultants And Staff. Currently, We Are Conducting A Business Survey. Please Visit Our Website And Send In Your Concerns And Ideas. Our Staff in Sustainable Development have been remarkably busy. While waiting for the rewrite we still have made some code changes and regulation changes that have a direct impact on redevelopment. Some highlights from this year include changes to some signal codes and changes for Multifamily Developments including Setbacks, Unit Sizes, Accessory Dwelling Units and Parking Requirements. Regulations for Single Family Homes and Duplexes have not changed. These changes have taken into account the high demand for Affordable Housing. While we were ahead of the curve many developers statewide have continued to be faced with Nimbyism “Not in My Backyard.” As a result, we now have “The Live Local Act.” Limiting local control by adding density without taking into consideration where, how much and the local ability to address impacts creates a whole other list of issues. As a City, we have looked at density with a carrot approach rather than being Nimby’s. If a developer wants housing units for mixed use development, they must include 15% affordable units. Live Local allows for greater density but with 40% of units being affordable. The big issue for many areas is it allows heights as high as buildings within a mile or minimum 3 feet. We know here in Hallandale Beach what it means to produce infill development. We have Implemented Form Base Codes and development areas with a focus on our corridors. But how do you find out what can be built where? As part of our website upgrades, we now have an interactive Planning and Zoning Page. You can visit our Sustainable Development Page where you will find a map. Once there you can click on a parcel, and it will tell you the use and the base zoning is overlay zonings density, heights, setbacks, and other information. As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org . • Mount Calvary Baptist Church Is Celebrating Its 124th Anniversary | sun-times

Mount Calvary Baptist Church Is Celebrating Its 124th Anniversary By John Bernardo Apr 23, 2026 One Of Broward County’s Oldest Institutions Will Soon Celebrate A Long-Awaited Milestone. This May, Mount Calvary Baptist Church In Pompano Beach Is Celebrating Its 124th Anniversary. The Theme For This Year’s Anniversary Is ‘Alignment For Advancement.’ “As we celebrate 124 years, we recognize that every season of growth in Mount Calvary’s history came when the church aligned itself with God’s purpose and the needs of the community,” said Pastor Branden A. Jones. Jones, Mount Calvary’s Senior Pastor since 2021, points out: “When a church aligns spiritually, advancement follows – not only within the walls of the church but throughout the entire community.” Unequivocally, God has blessed Mount Calvary Baptist in that today it’s truly a historical landmark. The church was founded on the fourth Sunday of May 1902, a time when Pompano wasn’t developed but local farmers continued to grow more and more pineapples. Astonishingly, Mount Calvary Baptist was established six years before the City of Pompano Beach incorporated, when worshippers met east of the Florida East Coast Railway at a brush harbor. Reverend Brown was their first pastor and served the church until 1904. A few years later, the house of worship moved across the street to a frame house on Northwest Third Avenue, now named Esther Rolle Avenue. On May 5th, 1957, Mount Calvary members marched to the church’s present site at 800 Northwest Eighth Avenue. As for this year’s anniversary celebration, it will be a three-day event. On Friday, May 22nd, 2026 starting at 6:00 p.m., the church will host “Game Night.” On Saturday, May 23rd, 2026, Mount Calvary will have “Fellowship Saturday” when the congregation and the community will indulge in fun, food, and fellowship. On Sunday, May 24th, 2026, Sunday morning, the church’s worship service will begin at 11:00 a.m. where members will pray, sing songs of praises, and there will be the giving of church offerings. Additionally, during the worship service, Mount Calvary will be inducting one or two families and one or two individuals into its “Hall of Fame.” These are families and individuals who have helped Mount Calvary to become the church it is today. This year the keynote speaker will be Reverend Wayne Lomax, Founder and Former Senior Pastor of the Fountain of New Life Church in Miami Gardens. After the service, dinner will be served. The church expects approximately 250 to 300 people to attend the affair. Those invited include: former Mount Calvary Pastor Anthony Burrell, Broward County Mayor Mark D. Bogen, Pompano Beach Mayor Rex Harden, and Pastor Jones mentioned that what makes Mount Calvary’s history so remarkable is the impact it has had beyond the sanctuary. “As the oldest African-American church in Pompano Beach, over the years, Mount Calvary has been home to many leaders, pioneers, and dignitaries who have made meaningful contributions to the city.” He adds, “Mount Calvary has never only been about worship; it has always been about leadership, service, and empowering people to make a difference.” And regarding Mount Calvary’s partnership with the community today, the church’s relationship with the community is rooted in service. “That means mentoring young people, supporting families, and partnering with organizations that help strengthen the community,” Jones said. Looking towards the future, Reverend Jones’ “missionary-focused” vision for Mount Calvary is to continue strengthening its spiritual foundation while expanding programs that uplift both the church and the community. “I would like to see continued growth in areas such as youth mentorship, leadership development, family support initiatives, and outreach programs.” And according to Jones, Mount Calvary is truly a multigenerational church. “Over the last two years, we’ve seen more younger people getting involved, which brings a renewed sense of energy and vision.” Reemphasizing the congregation, Mother Mary Jefferson is the church’s Elder Mother. Jefferson began serving in their Youth Ministry when she was 14. “This year is special as we celebrate our anniversary under Pastor Branden Jones’ leadership,” she said. Jefferson also recalls Reverend Samuel M. Collier (served the church from 1963 to 1977). “The Mount Calvary pastor that had the most impact on me was Samuel M. Collier. His love of the church and community made him stand out; he was also known for his fight for civil rights.” Another member is Deacon Malcolm E. Roberts. Roberts became an ordained deacon with Mount Calvary in 1988 after he joined the flock in 1976. Like Jefferson, Roberts remembers Pastor Collier’s achievements. “Under his tutelage, during those 14 years, Reverend Collier established the most illustrious legacy both spiritually and financially,” said Roberts. “From a spiritual standpoint, what he taught and the way he carried himself, he left a rich legacy that demonstrated the presence of God through love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and self-control.” He continued, “from a financial standpoint, a service to provide senior citizen homes to our community was his vision for Mount Calvary; to carry out this vision he led the church to purchase nine acres of land directly adjacent to and attached to our existing structure and property.” Deacon Roberts also spoke highly of Mount Calvary’s current pastor. “He (Reverend Jones) has made a difference in helping us determine how we deal with one another,” Roberts said. “Pastor Jones implemented a program that consistently promoted peace and love and these teachings and actions enabled and encouraged each of us to treat each other with respect.” Digressing to the anniversary commemoration, if anyone is interested in attending or needs more information, contact Zadia B. Tyson at: (954) 785-7083. Or email: zadiabt@gmail.com . The current facility is located at 800 NW 8th Avenue. It was renovated to look like this in the year of 2008. The first Mount Calvary Baptist Church located on 3rd Avenue. In the early 1950's, youngsters from Mount Calvary Baptist Church and Bethel A.M.E. Church were celebrating the end of a community Vacation Bible School. In the early 60's, Reverend Collie Pete, his wife, Sister Pete, celebrating the Choir's anniversary.
