- A Showcase of Skill and Community Spirit: The Broward County Transit 2025 Bus Safety Roadeo
A Showcase of Skill and Community Spirit: The Broward County Transit 2025 Bus Safety Roadeo January 29, 2025 Share Everyday heroes often operate in the background, unnoticed yet indispensable. Such is the case with bus operators, professionals whose expertise and commitment ensure the seamless movement of a bustling community. But once a year, they step into the spotlight for an event that celebrates their skills, precision, and dedication: the Broward County Transit 2025 Bus Safety Roadeo. This year, for the first time, the Roadeo leaves the closed gates of its traditional venue at the Copans Garage and moves to the open spaces of the Amerant Bank Arena Park and Ride Lot at Gate 7. Scheduled for Sunday, February 2, 2025, this historic shift transforms the competition into a public display, inviting families, transit enthusiasts, and curious residents to witness firsthand the incredible talents of BCT’s finest bus operators. The thrill begins as 11 of BCT’s most skilled operators navigate an intricate obstacle course, their movements precise and their focus unwavering. Each turn of the wheel and every maneuver showcase the expertise needed to guide massive buses through Broward County’s busy streets, a task they perform daily with unmatched professionalism. The 2025 competition welcomes "Flash" Jacquan, the 2024 Broward County Roadeo winner and standout participant. In 2023, he secured the Rookie of the Year title at the state level, ranking seventh out of 19 skilled competitors—a testament to his expertise and dedication. Though Jacquan isn’t competing this year, his presence exemplifies the camaraderie and shared passion that makes the Roadeo special. But this isn’t just a test of skill; it’s a celebration for the entire community. The Roadeo has evolved into a family-friendly festival with food trucks offering diverse cuisines, family-friendly games and activities, giveaways, and a festive atmosphere. With live DJ and radio broadcasts, the day promises memorable entertainment for all ages. At the heart of the event is a deeper message: public transit's critical role in connecting people to jobs and essential services. Events like the Roadeo offer a glimpse into the professionalism and dedication behind each bus ride, reminding us of the often-overlooked individuals who keep Broward County moving. “This year’s Roadeo is a unique opportunity to bring our community closer to the transit system,” said Coree Cuff Lonergan, CEO/General Manager of Broward County Transit. “It’s a celebration not just of skill but of the community connection that underlines Broward County Transit.” The day culminates with an award ceremony at 12:30 PM, honoring the operators who have excelled in the competition. Beyond the trophies, the winners earn the privilege of representing Broward County Transit at the 2025 Florida Triple Crown Roadeo in Gainesville later this month. If they win at the State level, they will have the distinct honor of representing BCT at the International Bus Roadeo in Austin, TX in April. So, mark your calendars, grab your loved ones, and head to the Amerant Bank Arena on Sunday, February 2, 2025, beginning at 8:30 AM for an unforgettable day of fun, community, and awe-inspiring skill. - Rethinking Career Decisions: Why College Is No Longer The Unquestioned Path | sun-times
Rethinking Career Decisions: Why College Is No Longer The Unquestioned Path By Feature Impact Jul 23, 2026 For Generations, Students Have Been Told A College Degree Is Key To Landing A Well-Paying Job And Building A Stable Future. Long Treated As The Gold Standard For Post-Secondary Education, Albeit An Expensive One, The Four-Year Degree Is No Longer The Unquestioned Path To Career Success. New research from the U.S. Career Institute, an online career training provider, suggests many Americans are rethinking what education and long-term job security actually look like. While college remains a popular path, 26% of adults surveyed said certifications or skills-based programs are the safer choice. Just 18% said the same about a four-year degree. In fact, if given the chance to do it all over again, 27% of respondents said they would choose a different path entirely, and 33% said they would look for something faster or more affordable. Knowing what they know now, just 17% reported they would make the same choice again; meaning more U.S. adults are now willing to ask if college is the right call. Cost is Getting Harder to Ignore Long sold as an investment that would pay for itself in time, the price tag that accompanies that college degree is increasingly scrutinized. While 38% of survey respondents said paying for college feels like a necessary investment despite the expense, 29% said they question whether it's a worthwhile expenditure. What's more, 32% of respondents said they would reconsider investing in a college education if student loan debt exceeded $10,000, even as the price of obtaining a degree continues to climb. AI is Leading to Job Security Concerns The rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence is adding another layer of uncertainty. In fact, 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. believe office-based and white-collar workers are the type of employees most likely to be replaced by AI in the next five years. As automation becomes a bigger part of workplace conversations, it's also influencing how people think about their futures, with more than half (54%) of respondents reconsidering their education or career path due to concerns about job security or automation. For some, that reconsideration is already translating into action. A quarter of respondents (25%) have already completed a certificate or skills-based training program while another 29% said they've seriously considered pursuing one. Stability is Taking Center Stage Prestige, job title and earning potential have long influenced post-secondary education choices. However, stability has become the most commonly cited factor influencing career decisions today, named by 53% of respondents, ranking it above prestige and status. That same mindset is shaping the advice people give younger generations. For those starting their careers now, 30% of survey respondents said they would recommend a certification or skills-based program while 24% said they'd still recommend pursuing a four-year degree. For many careers, a college degree remains a requirement. However, it may no longer be the only path forward for every student entering the workforce. - Holiday Travel Tips - For Those Traveling with a Loved One with Dementia
Holiday Travel Tips - For Those Traveling with a Loved One with Dementia December 5, 2024 Share One of the busiest travel times of the year is approaching, with nearly 80 million Americans are planning to travel during the long holiday period, according to AAA estimates. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is offering tips to help those traveling with a loved one with a Dementia-related illness make their trip as easy and comfortable as possible. “A family trip to visit a loved one, friend, or favorite destination can be a great way to spend the holiday season, including for those affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and other Dementia-related illnesses, including those affected by Dementia.” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services “Whether traveling near or far, there are preparations and adaptations family caregivers can make to help their loved one feel more comfortable and relaxed throughout the trip.” Before The Trip Make sure travel is advisable. Someone in the early stages of Dementia may still enjoy traveling, but as the disease progresses, travel may become too difficult. Factoring in the trip’s duration and/or the stage of the person’s illness, consult with their physician to make sure travel is recommended. Plan according to the person’s abilities. Plan the travel mode and timing of your trip in ways that minimize anxiety and stress. Assess the person’s abilities and needs when making arrangements; if they travel better at a specific time of day, try to schedule plans for that period of time. Preserve the person’s routine. Small or unfamiliar changes can be overwhelming and stressful to someone with Dementia, so to the greatest extent possible, maintain the person’s routine. For example, if they normally eat at a certain time, build that into the itinerary. Stock up before leaving. Bring snacks, water, activities and supportive items (i.e., a blanket, the person’s favorite sweater, a soft pillow). Include an extra and comfortable change of clothing that adapts to climate changes. Take important health and legal-related documentation, a list of current medications, and physician information with you. If Traveling by Mass Transit Know the security procedures. Check in advance with airports/train stations about security screening procedures and arrive early for a less stressful experience. This way, you can familiarize the person ahead of time about what will happen at the checkpoint. This can reduce potential anxiety. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) offers assistance with the screening process to air travelers with certain medical conditions, including Dementia-related illnesses; contact their TSA Cares Helpline at least 72 hours prior to your flight to learn more. Advise the airline. Let the airline know that you’re traveling with someone who has cognitive impairments and inform them of safety concerns and special needs. If traveling by car build in break time. Take regular breaks on road trips for food, bathroom visits, and rest. Families with questions about traveling with someone who has a Dementia-related illness can speak with a licensed social worker through the AFA Helpline by phone: (866) 232-8484, Text message (646) 586-5283. Or webchat: www.alzfdn.org - The helpline is available seven days a week.
