- Hey Boomers: The 1980's is Calling: The Newest Addition to the 2024 Summer Olympics
Hey Boomers: The 1980's is Calling: The Newest Addition to the 2024 Summer Olympics May 4, 2023 Share Breakdancing, a dance style that originated in the streets of New York City in the 1970s, and many of us who grew up in the 80's remember Breakdancing as part of our childhood, it was in the streets, in movies, and all over TV. Now it's back and the world is eagerly anticipating its addition in the 2024 Summer Olympics, sports enthusiasts and fans alike are buzzing with excitement over the inclusion of a brand-new "sport" - breakdancing! Also known as breaking, this dynamic and expressive street dance form has gained global popularity and is set to make its Olympic debut in Paris, France, in 2024. The inclusion of breakdancing in the 2024 Summer Olympics is a significant milestone for the dance community, as it marks the first time a street dance form has been recognized as an official Olympic sport. This decision reflects the increasing global appeal and cultural significance of breakdancing, which has grown into a mainstream phenomenon with competitions, events, and communities spanning across continents. The journey of breakdancing to the Olympics has not been without challenges. Over the years, breakdancing has faced misconceptions and stigmas, often being dismissed as a form of "street" or "urban" dance that lacks the technicality and athleticism of traditional sports. However, breakdancers have been tirelessly working to dispel these misconceptions by showcasing the physical demands, artistic expression, and competitive nature of the dance form. The inclusion of breakdancing in the Olympics is expected to provide a platform for breakdancers from diverse backgrounds and cultures to come together and compete on the world stage. It is also seen as an opportunity to promote inclusivity and diversity within the Olympic movement, as breakdancing embraces dancers of all genders, ages, and ethnicities, and encourages individuality and creativity. The road to the 2024 Olympics has been paved with rigorous qualifications and selection processes. National and international breakdancing competitions have been held to determine the top breakdancers who will represent their countries at the Olympics. The competition format will consist of one-on-one battles, where B-boys and B-girls will face off in rounds, showcasing their skills and creativity to impress the judges and win points. The athletes who will compete in the breakdancing event at the 2024 Summer Olympics are expected to exhibit exceptional athleticism, strength, and artistry. They will showcase their mastery of complex moves and combinations, as well as their ability to interpret music and express themselves through dance. The competition promises to be a thrilling spectacle, with breakdancers pushing the boundaries of what is physically possible, and captivating audiences with their electrifying performances. Apart from the athletic aspect, the artistic expression and creativity of breakdancing are also expected to be highlighted at the Olympics. Breakdancers often infuse their performances with their own unique style, incorporating elements of their cultural heritage, personality, and experiences. This artistic freedom is one of the defining features of breakdancing, and it is anticipated that the Olympic stage will provide a platform for breakdancers to showcase their artistic prowess and captivate audiences with their creativity. The inclusion of breakdancing in the Olympics has been celebrated as a historic moment for the dance community, with far-reaching positive impacts expected to ripple through the broader dance world. As an art form that emerged from marginalized communities and has grown into a global phenomenon, the recognition of breakdancing as an Olympic sport brings increased visibility, validation, and opportunities for practitioners worldwide. One of the major positive impacts of breakdancing's inclusion in the Olympics is the potential for increased funding and support for the dance community. Olympic recognition typically leads to increased investment in training programs, infrastructure, and resources for athletes, which can translate into more opportunities for dancers to hone their skills and compete at higher levels. The inclusion of breakdancing in the Olympics is a positive development that reflects the ever-evolving nature of the Games. It acknowledges the importance of urban culture and street dance as legitimate art forms that deserve recognition and respect. By adding breakdancing, the Olympics become more inclusive and diverse, showcasing a wider range of athletic abilities and cultural expressions. It also creates an opportunity for talented breakdancers to compete on a global stage, inspiring a new generation of dancers to pursue their passion and showcase their skills. This move highlights the modernization of the Olympics and its commitment to embracing new cultural expressions. < Previous News Next News >

- Mass Shootings: The Vicious Cycle Fueled By America’s Toxic Cult of Violence
Mass Shootings: The Vicious Cycle Fueled By America’s Toxic Cult of Violence By John W. Whitehead & Nisha Whitehead June 9, 2022 Share We are caught in a vicious cycle. With alarming regularity, the Nation is being subjected to a heartbreaking spate of violence that terrorizes the populace, fractures communities and gives the Government greater justifications to crack down, lock down and institute even more Authoritarian Policies for the so-called sake of National Security without many objections from the Citizenry. Mass Shootings have taken place in Schools, on College Campuses, Movie Theaters, Nightclubs, Grocery Stores, Concert Venues, Bars, Workplaces, Churches, on Military Bases and in Government Offices. In almost every instance, the shooters were dressed in Military-Style Gear and armed with Military-Style Weapons. Take the latest shooting that took place in Uvalde, Texas, when 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, wearing body armor and carrying a Rifle, walked into Robb Elementary School and opened fire, leaving at least 19 children and two teachers dead. This Uvalde Shooting took place ten days after another 18-year-old man, heavily armed and wearing Tactical Gear (including a Tactical Helmet and Plated Armor), opened fire in a Grocery Store in Buffalo, New York, killing 10 people. In 2018, a 19-year-old former student armed with a Gas Mask, Smoke Grenades, Magazines of Ammunition and an AR-15-Style Semi-Automatic Rifle opened fire on students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, leaving 17 people dead. Ten years ago, 20-year-old Adam Lanza—wearing Body Armor and black clothing, armed with Military-Style Weapons—opened fire on students and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, leaving 26 dead. Prior to the shooting, Lanza reportedly spent his days “playing Violent Video Games amid posters showcasing Military Equipment.” According to an FBI Report issued the day before the Uvalde shooting, these kinds of “Active Shooter Attacks” have doubled in recent years. As expected in the wake of such tragedies, there has been a vocal outcry for enacting more strident Gun Control Measures, more Mental Health Checks and Heightened Security Measures. Yet surely there’s more to these shootings than just easy access to Weapons and Mental Illness. Ask yourself: Why do these Mass Shootings keep happening? Who are these shooters modeling themselves after? Where are they finding the inspiration for their Weaponry and Tactics? Whose stance and techniques are they mirroring? When you start to connect the dots, they lead right back to the American Police State and the War-Drenched, Violence-Imbued, Profit-Driven Military Industrial Complex, both of which continue to dominate, dictate and shape almost every aspect of our lives. The United States is the number one consumer, exporter and perpetrator of Violence and Violent Weapons in the World. Violence has become America’s calling card. We are a Military Culture engaged in continuous Warfare. We have been a Nation at War for most of our existence. We are a Nation that makes a living from killing through Defense Contracts, Weapons Manufacturing and Endless Wars. We are being fed a steady diet of Violence through our Entertainment, News, Sports and Politics. It’s estimated that U.S. Military Intelligence Agencies (including the NSA) have influenced over 1,800 Movies and TV Shows. Then there are the growing number of Violent Video Games, a number of which are engineered by or created for the Military as Recruitment Tools, which have accustomed players to Interactive War Play through Military Simulations and First-Person Shooter Scenarios. As Esther J. Cepeda writes for The Washington Post, “Violent Video Games alone do not cause people to go off the rails, arm themselves and open fire on innocent people in Public Places. But there's also no question that there is something wrong with a MultiBillion-Dollar Video Game Industry that sells to young men the ability to Virtually Assassinate a Foe as an escape from Real Life.” The Media, eager to score Higher Ratings, has been equally complicit in making (Real) War more palatable to the Public by packaging it as TV Friendly. The Military has also been firmly entrenched in the Nation’s Sports Spectacles, having Co-Opted Football, Basketball, even NASCAR, “tying the Symbols of Sports with the Symbols of War.” This is how you acclimate a population to War. This is how you cultivate loyalty to a War Machine. This is how you sustain the Nation’s Appetite for War. Do you want to stop Gun Violence? Stop the Worship of Violence that permeates our Culture! Stop treating Guns and War as Entertainment Fodder in Movies, Music, Video Games, Toys, Amusement Parks, Reality TV, Sports and more. Stop distributing Weapons of War (Weapons that have no business being anywhere but on a Battlefield) to the Local Police and transforming Police into extensions of the Military. Stop exposing young people to the Military Industrial Complex’s Pervasive Propaganda. Stop falling for the Military Industrial Complex’s Psychological War Games. Salvador Ramos may have pulled the trigger that resulted in the mayhem in Uvalde, Texas, but something else is driving the madness! We’ve got to do more than react in a Knee-Jerk Fashion. Those who want Safety at all costs will clamor for more Gun Control Measures, widespread Mental Health Screening of the General Population and greater scrutiny of Military Veterans, more threat assessments and Behavioral Sensing Warnings, more CCTV Cameras with Facial Recognition Capabilities, more “See Something, Say Something” Programs aimed at turning Americans into snitches and spies, more Metal Detectors and Whole-Body Imaging Devices at Soft Targets, more Roaming Squads of Militarized Police empowered to do Random Bag Searches, more Fusion Centers to Centralize and Disseminate Information to Law Enforcement Agencies, and more Surveillance of what Americans say and do, where they go, what they buy and how they spend their time. Yet as I point out in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, all of these measures play into the Government’s hands by locking down the Nation without doing anything to address the underlying causes of this madness. What we need is a thoughtful, measured, Apolitical Response to these Shootings that takes aim at the Violence plaguing our Nation by lowering the levels of Violence here and abroad, whether it’s Violence we export to other countries, Violence we glorify in Entertainment, or Violence we revel in when it’s leveled at our So-Called Enemies, Politically or otherwise. Our Prolonged Exposure to the Toxic Culture of the American Police State is deadly. Use the Health Insurance Marketplace: Open enrollment is from November 1st – January 15th, 2025. The federal marketplace (HealthCare.gov) and offer many plans, and you may qualify for tax credits based on household income. Four out of five customers on HealthCare.gov were able to find plans for $100 or less per month after subsidies. 2. Compare Plans: Use comparison tools to examine different plans and their costs. They can be a great option if you need coverage in between other plans. 5. Explore Health Care Sharing Plans: These plans have much lower premiums and deductibles, and flexible networks. Great solution for those not eligible for tax credits. 6. Consider Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs): If you choose a high-deductible health plan, you might be able to use an HSA or FSA to save on taxes and cover some medical expenses with pre-tax dollars. 7. - In The Sunshine: Pembroke Park Commissioners Privately Met About Town Business
In The Sunshine: Pembroke Park Commissioners Privately Met About Town Business November 25, 2021 Share Sunshine laws make meetings, records, votes, deliberations and other official actions available for public observation, participation and/or inspection. Broward Inspector General John W. Scott announced today that the Broward Office of the Inspector General (OIG) issued a final report finding that Town of Pembroke Park commissioners Howard Clark and Reynold Dieuveille violated Florida’s open meetings law (the Sunshine Law) when they met privately in the town hall gym to discuss a matter that the town commission took up the next day. At the time, Clark was the town’s Vice Mayor. He resigned from his seat on September 22nd, 2021, after continuously serving on the Town Commission for over 30 years. The OIG Investigation determined that, on September 22nd, 2020, Clark intentionally spoke privately with Dieuveille about what to do about another commissioner’s official town roles as clerk-commissioner and Police Liaison, given denigrating claims that had surfaced about the other commissioner. Town Hall video footage and Dieuveille’s subsequent statements to town employees corroborated Dieuveille’s interview with the OIG, in which he admitted to the meetings. Clark first approached Dieuveille to speak to him on September 21st, 2020 and again on September 22nd, 2020. At a commission workshop meeting held the next day, on September 23rd, 2020, Clark, using a letter from a former long-time commissioner, which raised the question of whether to remove the other commissioner from his special town roles or not. Clark then set two resolutions for a commission vote on October 14th, 2020, one to replace the other commissioner as clerk-commissioner and one to replace him as police liaison. Those votes ultimately failed. The OIG concluded that Clark knowingly and Dieuveille unknowingly violated Florida’s Sunshine Law that requires certain government business be open to the public, reasonably noticed to the public and recorded through minutes. For this, Clark committed a second degree misdemeanor and Dieuveille committed a noncriminal infraction. In a written response to the OIG’s preliminary report, Clark denied the report’s findings with a version of events the OIG did not accept. In accordance with its charter mandate, the OIG is referring this matter to the Broward State Attorney for whatever action that agency deems appropriate. The OIGs final report can be found at: https://www.broward.org/InspectorGeneral/Publications/20211115OIG20010MFinalReport.pdf < Previous News Next News >

Broward County Transit Keeps Moving, Even During a Storm - A Behind The Scenes Look at BCT During An Emergency By Rachel Richardson and Jose Paz, BCT October 18, 2024 Share When Hurricane Milton threatened the area recently, Broward County Transit (BCT) top administration reported to the EOC, monitored storm conditions and made critical decisions to maintain transit services during the storm. “Even in moments like this, the goal of BCT is to provide 100% on-time service while ensuring the safety of our bus operators and staff,” BCT Deputy General Manager Tim Garling explained. In the fast-paced environment of the EOC, communication is vital. The BCT team relies on real-time reports from operations teams, including bus operators and supervisors in the field. Dispatchers continuously adjust routes based on road conditions. “Another goal for BCT especially during a storm is ensuring the safety of riders while keeping the buses operational,” Garling continued. “We always remain committed to getting people where they need to go safely even during emergencies.” As the storm approached, BCT fully activated its communication strategy to keep the public informed of its operations. It utilized the news media, social platforms, BCT website, and BCT e-newsletter, Transit Flash, which provides subscribers with real-time service changes. BCT 24-hour customer service hotline also remained available to assist passengers with trip-related inquiries. “Every crisis is unpredictable,” Angelica Jones, Deputy General Manager of BCT stated. “Although we have conducted thorough planning for various disasters, we remain prepared to adjust to the unexpected challenges that arise.” Behind the scenes, the BCT team works tirelessly to ensure passengers’ experience is safe and reliable. Throughout the hurricane, BCT remained fully operational to provide residents with uninterrupted access to dependable transit services despite challenging conditions.
