Beach Sweep is Back: Help Keep Hollywood Beach Clean March 17, 2022 Share One of Hollywood’s greatest assets is its beautiful, award-winning sandy beach. Travelers from all over the world choose our backyard as their vacation destination. As we make our way out of the pandemic, more travelers are vacationing on our beach. As with any popular destination, the more people who visit - the more debris gets left behind. In addition to the City’s regular beach maintenance, there are dozens of dedicated volunteers who hit the beach every day to pitch in to pick up litter on our beach. The City of Hollywood is pleased to announce the return of the monthly Hollywood Beach Sweep, where volunteers gather every second Saturday of the month to collect litter and cigarette butts from the sandy beach. Hollywood Beach Sweep Clean-Up returns on Saturday, April 9th from 7 – 11 a.m. Volunteers meet at Charnow Park at Garfield Street and the Broadwalk, at 7 a.m. Volunteers are asked to complete the registration form available on the City’s website and children, ages 8 and older are welcome to participate when accompanied by an adult. Gloves and garbage bags will be provided to all volunteers along with safety instructions. Please dress appropriately, wear sunscreen and bring your completed registration form with you. Broward County's Updated Flood Risk: Understanding The New FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps July 11, 2024 Share As of July 31st, 2024, Broward County residents and property owners will be facing significant changes with the implementation of updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These revisions, aimed at accurately reflecting current flood risks, bring both challenges and opportunities for individuals and communities across the region. One of the most notable adjustments in the new FEMA FIRMs is the expansion of the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA), particularly impacting the city of Hollywood. Over 11,000 properties in Hollywood now fall within this high-risk zone, a designation that mandates compliance with stringent flood mitigation measures. Properties within the SFHA are subject to elevated base flood elevations (BFEs), necessitating construction practices that reduce flood risk and ensure structural resilience. Even with all this unrest I like to say, we are the government that provides vital life services. The federal and state government are not worried about keeping your water running, or toilets flushing. Our strategic plan was bold. We stuck to it and made tough political decisions which led to a path of stability. If you recall my theme last year, Promises Made Promise Kept. Cities were finally seeing our tax dollars coming back. This year my motto is “Dig Baby, Dig!” And I do not mean for oil. As a side note, we heard drilling permits were being issued once again. Luckily for us, they will not be digging off our coast. Southeast Florida was off the table during Trump’s first term, and we found out last week the same will hold true. Supply chains had started to free up which meant projects were moving. Even with the cost of construction material going up we can continue with our goals. Dig Baby Dig! 2024 was an election year. People were hurting when it came to our economy. It was a few months ago eggs peaked at $8.17 per dozen and now the average is $4.38 a dozen. In 2020, they were $1.48. Inflation continued wars in Ukraine, Israel, unrest in Africa. Crime in the U.S. was on the rise. National crime statistics show a downward trend in violent crime. The same goes for our city. Grilling fish is different from traditional fare like burgers and steaks, however. One method capturing the attention of chefs and amateur barbecue enthusiasts alike is electric grilling. With technology innovations that enable higher heat and more precise control, along with easy-to-use, guided cooking delivered via smartphone apps, grilling seafood can be simpler than ever. There's a common misconception that all fish can be grilled, but not all fish is created equally. Moisture is not your friend. While you're likely aiming for a fresh, moist flavor when eating fish, that doesn't mean it should be wet when it goes on the grill. There's a sweet spot for grilling fish, whether it's 400˚ F for thinner fish or slightly above 400˚ F for thicker cuts, which is why electric grilling is gaining steam. Grilled Whole Branzino with Fresh Herb Sauce Recipe courtesy of Chef Alton Brown on behalf of Current Backyard Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Serves: 4 Fresh Herb Sauce: 2 Tablespoons of Chopped Dill 1/4 Cup of chopped Parsley 2 Tablespoons of chopped Chives 1 Small Garlic Clove, minced 1/2 Teaspoon of Kosher Salt 1/4 Teaspoon of Red Pepper Flakes 1 Tablespoon of Lemon Zest 1 Tablespoon of Lemon Juice 3/4 Cup of Extra-Virgin Olive Oil Branzino: 2 Head-on Whole Branzinos (about 1 pound each), cleaned and scaled 2 Teaspoons of Kosher Salt 1 Lemon, sliced into six rounds 6-8 Sprigs of Dill 6-8 Sprigs of Parsley 2 Teaspoons of Extra-Virgin Olive Oil To make the fresh Herb Sauce: In a small bowl, combine the Dill, the Parsley, the Chives, the Garlic, the Salt, the Red Pepper Flakes, the Lemon Zest, the Lemon Juice and the Olive Oil; then set them aside. Set both sides of the grill to 650˚ F (high) and close the lid. To prepare the Branzino: Season the Fish inside and out with the Kosher Salt. Fill the cavity of each Fish with the Lemon Slices, the Dill Sprigs and the Parsley Sprigs then tie them with kitchen twine to secure them and refrigerate them until they are ready to be grilled. Evenly coat the skin of both Fish with the Olive Oil. Insert the temperature probe into the thickest part of flesh of each Fish, parallel to the dorsal fin, then place them on the grill with the belly sides toward you. Close the lid and cook them for 5 minutes. Open the lid and gently turn the Fish over with a thin metal spatula or two forks. Close the lid and cook them for 5 more minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 145˚ F. Transfer the Fish to a platter and remove the twine. Serve the Fish topped with the Fresh Herb Sauce. Spray a 9-by-9-inch square pan with the Floured Baking Spray. To prepare the Brownie Layer: In a medium bowl, stir the Brownie mix, the Sweetpotato, the Oil, the Water and the Egg until they are blended. Spread the Batter in the bottom of the prepared pan. However, For Millions Of Families, The End Of The School Year Also Marks The Beginning Of A Stressful Season Filled With Tough Choices, As Children Can Fall Behind In The Months Away From The Classroom. The summer gap begins when the school doors close and many children lose access to the daily routines, educational support and dependable nutrition that help them thrive. For families already juggling tight budgets and demanding schedules, summer can quickly become a season of added pressure and stress. Summer learning loss - or the decline in academic skills and learning during the school break - can have a lasting impact on academic outcomes. Studies show over the summer, students can forget 20-30% of what they learned during the school year. You must register to be entered into the raffle and be present to win. Last week, I had an opportunity to be in our city at a Mayor’s Forum hosted by The Realtors. It is always a great chance to highlight our city and update the Broward County real estate industry on city issues. I had the chance to answer a few questions about affordable housing and homeownership. A representative that services mortgages inquired about how we can better help residents afford a mortgage. Our CRA has many programs to support home ownership. Down payment assistance, Neighborhood Improvement grants, emergency rental assistance and even senior assistant programs. While we have many programs to help our residents, my response included that all clients need to understand home ownership is simply not about a mortgage but the financial stability of the applicant. During the 2008 bubble many applicants were given mortgages that truly could not afford a home. This led to the crisis of 2008. I sat on the Hallandale Beach Housing Board back then and had to tell many applicants even though you are approved your income does not work. All property owners’ single-family, multi-family or condominium have the shared responsibility of maintaining their property. If they are not keeping it in shape they will end up in Code Enforcement. Our city continues to work hard to address many issues, but we cannot do everything. Private property is just that, private. There are shared responsibilities. Property owners must maintain not simply their building but all land including their swales. We do not cut trees nor pick up debris and illegal dumping. The complaint I often get is “It is your swale not mine.” Main corridors like Hallandale Beach Boulevard, Ocean Drive, US1 and the FEC corridors are not owned by the City. We have an interlocal agreement to keep landscaping and in some cases parking with the agencies that do. In all other cases, owners must keep clean and support sidewalks and swales. Another big expense residents are not prepared for is the fact water, sewer and drainage beyond the meter, interconnections and in parking lots are the responsibility of the property owner. If you have a broken line on your property, you must fix it. These types of breaks can cost thousands of dollars. We as a city will not go on to property and fix them. Many single-family owners are not aware that there is Service Line Insurance. There are multiple companies that provide insurance. For years, our city has partnered with the National League of Cities and their Service Line Insurance Program. This program will repair lines that break. The one thing that they will not do is ensure breaks under homes that require extensive repairs to foundations. This would be your homeowner’s insurance. In addition to line repair, the Service Line Insurance offers to reimburse 2500 towards water bills from leaks in your home. A simple break in a pipe can cost hundreds of dollars in bills that must be paid by the owner. In December, I asked that we invite the NLC Representative to provide a presentation to our commission to develop awareness of the earth program and its benefits presentation. As a city, we know many of our city pipes are well over 40 years old. This means many homes have aging pipes. In the State of Florida property owners are not aware that they must now have those pipes inspected and cleaned. I have great concern about the added cost burden this will have on our already struggling families. This program or another that can help offset these types of unexpected costs is the goal. Aventura Police Slingshot Reveal April 7, 2023 Share The Aventura Police Department provides a variety of community programs focused on crime and drug prevention, emergency preparedness, community safety and involvement. The Department has a long history of professionalism and community involvement. In fact, back in 2000, the Aventura Police Department became the youngest agency to ever receive accreditation status through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). The accreditation means the Police Department has been recognized by an independent organization composed of representatives of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Sheriff’s Association, the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, the Police Executive Research Forum and has complied with over four hundred standards that have been established as benchmarks of excellence. Accreditation is a coveted award that symbolizes professionalism, excellence and competence. Even with all the success the Department has achieved since its inception, one of the most shining achievements the Department partakes in is outreach. From the DARE Program, Red Ribbon Week, National Night Out and the Aventura Safe Kids program. The Aventura Police Department is truly a community oriented department. In fact here are some of their outreach initiatives: • Community Patrol Officers volunteer to take on additional duties to assist persons with non-crime related matters. • The Department has been trained in bike patrol methods and tactics and they patrol various areas of the City on bicycles. • The City of Aventura works in partnership with the Miami-Dade Office of Emergency Management to help prepare the community for large-scale emergency events, which may impact police services and the availability of resources for a prolonged period of time. • Officers work in conjunction with the City of Aventura Code Compliance Division to respond to community issues. Many times community outreach is done for specific events but that's all changing with the latest reveal. Now the Department is taking outreach to the next level and are proud to present their newest community policing and recruitment initiative, The Aventura Police Slingshot. Their new Slingshot vehicle will help spotlight what the City of Aventura has to offer its residents and the South Florida community. In addition it assists in building bonds through partnerships, engagement and outreach.
