  • Have Allergies? Tips to feel your best indoors and out

Have Allergies? Tips to feel your best indoors and out (BPT) July 8, 2021 Share A runny nose, watery eyes, itchy throat, nagging cough - as the weather changes throughout the year, different allergens can increase, making you miserable in numerous ways. Medications can help, but there are all-natural steps you can take to help you feel your best, whether indoors or outside. Outdoor tips for allergy season Check online for pollen counts in your area. A good place to start is the National Allergy Bureau from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology at https://pollen.aaaai.org/#/ Pollen counts can vary depending on weather and season, so this can help you know ahead of time how severe your allergies may be if spending time outside. Consider planning outdoor activities in the early morning when daily counts are often at their lowest. Keep in mind, windy days spread pollen around and it may be more difficult to spend time outdoors if you have allergies. Rain removes pollen from the air, so after a shower is a good time to head outdoors as pollen counts are typically lower. Take a personal air purifier with you when you're on the go. The LG PuriCare™ Mini Air Purifier is designed to remove up to 99% of ultra-fine dust and reduces allergens and irritants that can be harmful to breathe. Compact, lightweight and portable, this handy purifier displays the air quality and adjusts to filter air at the appropriate rate for up to 8 hours. When you get home, remember that microscopic pollen particles and other allergens are likely stuck on your clothes and body. Especially important on high pollen count days, immediately remove clothes when you get home and place them in a laundry basket to be washed. Consider taking a shower and washing your hair to remove any allergens on your body, helping to reduce the allergens brought into your home from outside. Tips to reduce indoor allergens Keep windows closed to keep pollen out. Clean furniture and floors regularly where pollen, pet dander, dust and other allergens often gather. If possible, wash hard flooring weekly and vacuum carpet and rugs several times a week. Remove clutter and dust regularly to help maintain a clean indoor environment. Invest in an air purifier for your room like the LG PuriCare™ 360 Single Air Purifier that captures six different types of particles to deliver purer, cleaner air. The true HEPA filtration system traps 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns and the deodorization filter removes odors like food, smoke, smog and harmful airborne chemicals. Plus, it's CERTIFIED asthma & allergy friendly® having undergone rigorous scientific testing by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Get some air in your home gym, office, bedroom or even dorm, by improving the air quality around you with an LG purifier. Creating cool, comfortable spaces is vital to enjoying the change of the seasons. LG PuriCare air purifiers will give you a breath of fresh air, whether at home or on the move. To help you sleep well and remove allergens and dust mites, wash your sheets, pillowcases and blankets weekly in hot water at a minimum 130 F. For pillows, stuffed animals and other items that can't be washed, try investing in the AAFA-certified LG Styler. This innovative laundry appliance can give anything from your afternoon outfit, to your shoes, even your kids toys, a fresh clean that eliminates any lingering allergens and dander after a full day outside with the extensive cleaning power of steam. While some moisture in the air makes it easier to breathe, too much moisture can cause mold and mildew to thrive. Be mindful and strive to keep the humidity levels in your house between 20% and 40%. When bathing or showering, use a ventilation fan to remove excess moisture. Additionally, use the stove or kitchen fan when cooking to vent moisture and fumes to help keep air cleaner. More than 50 million Americans have experienced various types of allergies each year, according to AAFA. If you or a loved one have allergies, these steps can help whether you're exploring the great outdoors or relaxing inside. < Previous News Next News >

  • A City Rich In History: Our Community Is Lucky To Have Raised Many Individuals That Have Put our City on The Map

A City Rich In History: Our Community Is Lucky To Have Raised Many Individuals That Have Put our City on The Map By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper March 2, 2023 Share (L) "Smokin” Mike Perkins...He was not just a Champ in the Ring, he was our hometown hero" Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper (Pictured here at age 26 vs Trevor Berbick - 01/17/86) (R) Curci Village held the groundbreaking to kick off the completion of the surrounding grounds and the addition of an exterior elevator so visitors can access the second floor After living 30 years in Hallandale Beach, I have had the wonderful chance to meet many residents including members from the founding families of our great City. I can say I have spent more time in Hallandale Beach than any other community including my hometown of Levittown, Pennsylvania. So, this is home. Through the years I have met so many wonderful people that were born and raised in Hallandale. I have come to learn that there is plenty of rich history particularly in the Northwest and Southwest sections of our City. Our community is lucky to have raised many individuals that have put our City on the map. Many of these residents went to Hallandale High and continue to give back to the City. Sadly, one of these residents, Micheal Leon Perkins was laid to rest this Saturday. He was Might Charger. As a young child and student, he was known for his singing skills that he practiced in Ebenezer Baptist Church. He competed in many talent shows at school and at Dixie Park where he held his first job at 13 as a park aid. Dixie Park is now known as Peter Bluesten Park. While he was known to be a singer, everyone figured he would be an R&B star. God had other plans for him. In 1979 right after high school Mike found a love of boxing. In 1981 he won the Golden Gloves Heavyweight Championship. This opened many doors for him. He relocated to New York City, he trained with and competed with some of the best. At one of his first professional fights, which he lost, he met Sugar Ray Leonard.. After the fight Sugar Ray said to him, “even though you lost you came out smokin.” Since then, the name stuck and he became “Smokin” Mike Perkins. Mike traveled the world and fought locally too. He was the Main Event in many bouts including: The Diplomat, Madison Square Garden, Bermuda, Nassau, Atlantic City and the United Kingdom, just to name a few. Sadly, his trainer suddenly passed away which changed Mike's course. In 1993, Mike came back to Hallandale and married his longtime girlfriend Denise Brown. He continued to train with the hopes of getting back in the ring. He worked many jobs and landed one with North Construction where sadly he was injured and lost mobility. It was then he received the great news that Denise was pregnant and then Mike Jr. was born. Mike was a true pillar of our community. He mentored and continued to be an inspiration to everyone. He was always singing and joking. He was not just a Champ in the Ring, he was our hometown hero. I wish his family peace and love during this sad time. As life would have it, Saturday started out with more history. We held the groundbreaking for Curci Village. Curci Village is where the original 1906 home of the Curci Family was built and remains today. They were one of the original founding families of Hallandale. The Curci Home was restored and dedicated on the National Registry. The home is set up for tours and has many artifacts that give visitors a feel for what life was like back when Hallandale was just in its infancy. While the home was opened a few years back only the first floor was accessible. The groundbreaking is to kick off the completion of the surrounding grounds and the addition of an exterior elevator so visitors can access the second floor. The second floor contains many historical documents. In addition there will be a large patio, gazebo, decorative water fountain to replace the original one and new fencing. The home truly is a gem. The construction is scheduled to be completed within 10 months. Once completed the location will be a wonderful spot for visiting, family gatherings, events and weddings. If you have a passion for history we are looking for volunteers for our Historical Committee. This weekend was “Food and Groove” in Hallandale Beach. Our CRA Staff and the many volunteers outdid themselves this year. The event was sold out with over 1,600 attendees. There was a fabulous dance band and a DJ that kept the party hopping. The food from our many local restaurants was amazing. Special thanks go out to FIU and SOBEWFF for making us part of this amazing event for another year. Also, I would like to thank Gulfstream Park for opening Pegasus Park, which is a wonderful event space. As always, I am available for your questions, concerns, and ideas to help make our City a better place. Please feel free to reach out to me at my office: (954) 457-1318. • ZOA Urges National Council For History Education To Revise Biased, Inaccurate Anti-Israel Lesson Plan | sun-times

ZOA Urges National Council For History Education To Revise Biased, Inaccurate Anti-Israel Lesson Plan Jewish Connection News Aug 27, 2026 Zionist Organization Of America (ZOA) National President Morton A. Klein Released The Following Statement: The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) has urged the National Council for History Education (NCHE), a federally funded non-profit organization that provides resources to educators and educational organizations, to revise a lesson plan riddled with factual inaccuracies and anti-Israel bias. The lesson plan – titled “Plan Displacement and Resistance: The Nakba of 1948 Continues” – downplays and ignores critical facts about Israel in order to deny the Jewish state’s right to exist and its right to defend its people from violence and terrorism. In a letter sent on August 10, 2026, to NCHE, the ZOA noted that the lesson plan violates the organization’s own mission to support “accurate” and “inclusive” teaching and learning of “complex histories.” The ZOA also cautioned that as a recipient of federal funds, NCHE must ensure that its programs and activities are free from antisemitic discrimination as required by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, or risk losing its federal funding. You can read the ZOA’s letter below: August 10, 2026 Ms. Jessica Ellison, Executive Director National Council for History Education 13940 Cedar Road, #393 University Heights OH 44118 Dear Mr. Ellison: We write on behalf of the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) to express deep concern about that National Council for History Education's (NCHE) lesson plan titled "Plan Displacement and Resistance: The Nakba of 1948 Continues." The lesson plan is shockingly inaccurate and biased against Israel. It downplays and ignores critical facts in order to deny Israel's right to exist and its right to defend its people from violence and terrorism. We urge you to ensure that this lesson plan is revised without delay. It not only fails to comport with NCHE's mission to support accurate and inclusive teaching and learning of complex histories, at the expense of teachers who may believe that they can rely on NCHE as a professional, responsible resource. The lesson plans also raises serious legal concerns. The ZOA led the successful battle to ensure that Title VI of the Civil Rights would be enforced to protect Jewish students from antisemitic discrimination. Under Title VI, recipients of federal funding must ensure that their programs and activities are free from antisemitic discrimination, or risk losing their federal funding. NCHE's funding comes primarily from federal grants, including from the U.S. Department of Education. If the lesson plan is not revised, we intend to alert the Department of Education that instead of providing factual and unbiased educational materials to educators and educational organizations, NCHE is using taxpayer money to promote false and unbiased information that encourages hatred of Israel and Jews. Some of the many examples of the problems with the lesson plan are set forth in the attached. We would be pleased to work NCHE to revise the lesson plan so that it satisfies NCHE's mission and its obligations under Title VI. We look forward to hearing from you. Very truly yours, Morton A. Klein National President Susan B. Tuchman, Esq. Director, Center for Law & Justice Inaccuracies and Bias in the National Council for History Education’s Lesson Plan Titled “Plan Displacement and Resistance: The Nakba of 1948 Continues” • The historical context that NCHE gives for what it describes as “Palestinian displacement” paints a factually inaccurate picture of the inhabitants of the Land of Israel. The lesson plan states that Palestinian Arabs were “dispossessed of their land,” omitting the critical fact — backed by mounds of archeological evidence — that Jews are indigenous to the Land of Israel going back more than 3,000 years. It is thus wrong and irresponsible for NCHE’s lesson plan to promote to educators the falsehood that the creation of the state of Israel, the religious and ancestral homeland of the Jewish people, amounted to the dispossession of another people’s land. • NCHE’s lesson plan inaccurately describes the Balfour Declaration as supporting “the statelessness, forced exile, and cultural marginalization” of Palestinian society. It did nothing of the sort. The Balfour Declaration recognized the Jewish people’s ancient connection to the Land of Israel by expressing support for establishing “a national home for the Jewish people” in their ancestral homeland. Importantly, the Balfour Declaration expressly provided that “nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities” in the land — which is the opposite of what NCHE’s lesson plan promotes to educators. • NCHE’s lesson plan inaccurately states that the partition plan to create an Arab state and a Jewish state was rejected by Arab leaders and representatives because they “saw it as unjust.” In fact, the Arabs rejected the partition plan because they refused to accept the existence of a Jewish state in the region, which would be a critical point for educators to understand. • NCHE’s lesson plan inaccurately states that “war broke out between Israeli and Palestinian forces” after the state of Israel was established in 1948. To begin with, the forces were not “Palestinian.” The armies of five Arab nations — Egypt, Syria, Transjordan, Lebanon, and Iraq — immediately invaded Israel to annihilate it. • NCHE’s lesson plan inaccurately suggests that Palestinian Arabs were expelled from their homes and prevented from returning during the Arab war against Israel in 1948. While some Palestinian Arabs were expelled, thousands left of their own volition in anticipation of war, and others left at the direction of Arab leaders. NCHE’s lesson plan fails to make the critical point that had the Arabs accepted the partition plan and a Jewish state alongside another Arab state — instead of launching a war — there would have been no Palestinian Arab refugees. • NCHE’s lesson plan acknowledges the plight of Palestinian Arab refugees after the state of Israel was created in 1948, but neglects to mention the plight of the hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees from Arab countries during the same period. Jews were persecuted in the Arab countries they were living in, some in communities that had existed for centuries. Jews in Arab countries were subjected to anti-Jewish pogroms and their property, businesses, and belongings were confiscated. Over 850,000 Jews from Arab countries were forced to leave their homes, communities, and livelihoods with virtually nothing. But they did not remain refugees for long. Some went to Europe and North America and most rebuilt their lives in Israel. None of the Jewish refugees received any compensation from the Arab countries that oppressed them and forced them out. • NCHE’s description in the lesson plan of the so-called “new Nakba” in Gaza is a complete distortion of the facts. The lesson plan describes in detail Israel’s alleged actions in response to Hamas’ October 7, 2023, massacre in Israel. Yet it makes barely a reference to the events which preceded Israel’s defensive actions. On October 7, 2023, Jews endured the worst massacre since the Holocaust. There is nothing in the lesson plan that addresses the fact that Hamas, which had already been recognized by the United States as a terrorist group since 1997, breached Israel’s border on that day and murdered, butchered and raped 1,200 men, women and children at a peaceful dance festival, and in their homes and communities, and then kidnapped hundreds of men, women and children, including babies, and held them hostage in Gaza, where some were murdered, and all were tortured and starved. NCHE’s lesson plan actually indulges the notion that Hamas’ slaughter and savagery were “a legitimate response to Israeli occupation,” omitting the critical fact that there was no “occupation” of Gaza. On the day of the massacre, there had not been a single Israeli civilian or soldier in Gaza for almost 20 years. Gazans were under the tyrannical, repressive rule of Hamas, not Israel. • NCHE’s lesson plan falsely depicts the effects of Israel’s defensive war against Hamas and its allies in Gaza and blames Israel for the suffering of civilians in Gaza. In fact, Hamas bears primary responsibility for their suffering, by provoking the war and then maximizing the damage to and death of civilians in Gaza. Tons and tons of food and other supplies were delivered to Gaza, but Hamas prevented aid from reaching civilians, instead of facilitating the process. Hamas intercepted and looted food convoys and blocked civilians from getting aid. Also, instead of doing whatever it could to protect its people in a time of war, Hamas deliberately sought to increase civilian casualties by using civilians in Gaza as human shields. It used civilian homes, hospitals, schools and mosques for command operations and to store weapons, launch rockets, and house its soldiers. Hamas soldiers wore civilian clothing to blend in with the population in humanitarian zones. Before launching its attack on October 7, 2023, Hamas spent years constructing hundreds of miles of underground tunnels from which the terrorist group launched attacks, stored weapons, sheltered its soldiers, and hid Israeli hostages. These tunnels were integrated into residential neighborhoods, houses, hospitals, mosques, schools and United Nations facilities. Previous Next

  • Step Into The Victory Garden: An Interactive Sculptural Community Garden Created by Miami-Based Artist

Step Into The Victory Garden: An Interactive Sculptural Community Garden Created by Miami-Based Artist February 3, 2023 Share The Museum Of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) invites the community to experience “Welcome To Paradise,” a dynamic new commissioning program featuring temporary public art projects by local South Florida artists. This program invites artists to create ambitious and experimental art installations to activate MOCA's Paradise Courtyard. The first season centers on artists working at the intersection of ecology and technology. On view through June 25th, 2023, visitors will be able to step into the Paradise Courtyard and discover “Victory Garden,” an interactive sculptural community garden created by Miami-Based Artist Emmett Moore. Drawing inspiration from victory gardens of the past, which were planted during wartime to supplement rations and boost morale, Moore’s “Victory Garden” connects the local community with contemporary art and encourages visitors to reflect on their relationship with the built environment. Utilizing sustainable materials such as repurposed steel drums to form sculptural planters, “Victory Garden” will feature plants native to South Florida and the Caribbean such as Cuban Oregano, Collard Greens, Starfruit, Bee Balm and Everglades Cherry Tomatoes that will be harvested and shared. The exhibition will also include benches and solar-powered USB outlets for visitors to use. The series will continue with “Into The Great Dying: Roles We Play,” a thought-provoking, interactive ceramic sculpture by Miami-Based Artist Beatriz Chachamovits, that engages with the Marine Landscape, highlighting the decline of Coral Reef Ecosystems and the impact of human actions. This installation will be on view from July 5th, 2023 through November 21st, 2023. “At MOCA, we are proud to develop programs like ‘Welcome to Paradise’ that not only reinforce our commitment to supporting local contemporary artists, but also enliven and opens up a space for shared, fee-free access to the museum for audiences of all ages to enjoy,” said Chana Sheldon, Executive Director of MOCA. Complementary to “Welcome to Paradise,” MOCA will offer a diverse array of on-site events and programs, including a member’s event on February 24th, 2023 and a workshop celebrating Earth Day on April 22nd, 2023. “Victory Garden” will be open to the public during MOCA's gallery closure for installation. Welcome To Paradise is made possible with major support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and additional support was provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation For The Visual Arts. General admission to the museum is $10 for adults; $5 for seniors, students and visitors with disabilities and FREE for MOCA Members, residents of the City of North Miami and children under 12.
