  • Holiday Traditions Are Back in Hallandale Beach

Holiday Traditions Are Back in Hallandale Beach Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper December 22, 2022 Share Happy Hanukkah! For years our City had always done Menorah lighting. Sadly, the tradition had stopped. After I was reinstated the COVID-19 Pandemic struck the world and no one was gathering in large groups. This coupled with no budgeting of holiday lights really put a damper on the Holiday Spirit around town. Thanks to Vice Mayor Taub, Commissioner Lazarow and the entire commission the tradition has started again. In addition to placing a Menorah and Manger Scene in front of City Hall last Thursday, on Monday Rabbi Mendy Tennenhaus, Rabbi Miller and others held the lighting of the candles. Along with them were the young students from Chaya Aydel Seminary. This seminary led by Rabbis Yossi Lobovics provides Torah education and many other classes to prepare young women with life skills in Chassedishe. They also prepare them to continue on to college with classes that offer college credit. It is always wonderful meeting these young ladies that come from around the globe. They stay in dorms around our city. In addition to studies, they do many acts of Tzedakah, giving to many needy residents here in Hallandale Beach. They also go around to visit many other homes and local Chabads to learn about our culture. The Cantor sings his beautiful blessing over the candles, National Anthem and the Israeli National Anthem. While I could not be there, I was sent pictures and heard it was once again a wonderful event. In this day and age with the sharp rise in Antisemitism it is so important we learn about all religions and support the free practice of them without hatred. As my husband Dr Cooper always says, “Everyone should be able to practice whatever they want but religion should never be a reason or tool to attack another person.” I believe that the super majority of society believes this. Let us join in celebrating with hopes the bright light of the Menorah continues to shine peace and love throughout the year. A special thank you goes to Vice Mayor Taub for joining with me to provide jelly donuts, a Hanukkah Tradition, and representing our Commission. Another tradition was held last week at the OB Johnson Field. Amsterdam Restaurant and Nightclub once again helped to host the after-school holiday show. This year's Theme was ”International Holidays." Each class participated with a song, dance, or poem. The school also partners with Dreamer Makers, a non-profit that teaches performing arts. Amsterdam provided toys, bounce houses and food trucks for parents and students to enjoy after the show. They also had a visit from Santa. For the past few years some residents in the Palms section of our City have been complaining about the opening of the large football field for free play at OB Johnson. The football field there is used by PAL, Hallandale High School and those that want to rent it out. Residents can enter the OB Johnson office to have staff open the field up to 6 PM or dusk. The logic of not having it totally open was twofold. We did not want the field damaged, which would not only cost money but interfere with planned games. The other reason is liability. It is one thing for a parent and child to have a catch or kick around the ball but is quite different for coaches to come and do practice without proof of insurance. After discussing the issue with the City Manager and Parks Director it has been decided not to require kids to request a key. The park, like others, will be open till dusk. There are lights on the field, but we do not want to create an unsafe environment after hours unless there is a planned permitted activity. If coaches want to provide training, they will need to go through PAL or file a permit with proof of insurance to have the park open and lights to be on. As many are celebrating Hanukkah and preparing for Christmas, I want to wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season. Please remember to support our local shops and restaurants around town. Also, it is the perfect time to be kind. Kindness and a smile do not cost a dime but can mean the world to those that may be suffering. Be on the lookout for the Rotary Santa Sled that will be out touring Christmas Eve. As always, I am available for your questions, concerns, and ideas to help make our City a better place. Please feel free to reach out at my office: (954) 457-1318. On my cell/text at: (954) 632-5700. Or email me at: jcooper@cohb.org . Santa And His Sleigh To Ride Through Hallandale Beach The Hallandale Beach - Aventura Rotary Club will continue with their annual tradition of the holiday sled. The Rotary Club has celebrated over 65 years of service. Santa and his reindeer on his Sleigh will be traveling throughout Hallandale Beach on Christmas Eve, Saturday, December 24th, 2022 with gifts for the children of our City. Please come out to greet Santa when you hear the music that accompanies him as he makes his rounds. This is a traditional event occurring annually for over 60 years in our City, founded and continued through the years by the Rotary Club of Hallandale Beach - Aventura. • FPL Meteorologists Prepare for Potentially Active Hurricane Season

FPL Meteorologists Prepare for Potentially Active Hurricane Season June 6, 2024 Share Growing up in Indiana and then living in Oklahoma -- the heart of tornado alley -- for 15 years, Chris Kerr witnessed just how quickly skies can turn from calm to chaos. He can vividly recall the roaring winds that came with each deadly storm, especially the last EF5 (strongest classification of tornadoes) on record in the U.S. that affected his friends and coworkers in May 2013, but barely missed his home. These memories, etched into his soul, fuel his dedication as a meteorologist today at Florida Power & Light Company (FPL). From afternoon thunderstorms to named hurricanes, he forecasts weather conditions to help restoration crews get the lights back on safely and quickly for customers by informing them of any threats or challenges they may face, like lightning, high winds, storm surge or flooding. “I like being able to see the results from the forecasts and being able to make a difference,” said Kerr while looking through weather tracking models on his various computer screens. The graphics software he and his colleague, Tim Drum, use is just like what the Weather Channel and other media entities use to present graphical weather forecasts. This accurate and timely weather forecasting is crucial, especially as experts predict a well-above-average 2024 hurricane season beginning June 1. Researchers at Colorado State University are forecasting 23 named storms, 11 hurricanes and five major hurricanes. “All the data coming in so far shows this season could possibly be one to challenge some of the records set in recent years,” said Kerr. “Record-high water temperatures out in the Atlantic Ocean and an anticipated La Niña are two factors that are favorable for hurricane development.” La Niña is the periodic cooling of the waters of the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean; and it typically allows for above average tropical cyclone development in the North Atlantic Ocean because of increased thunderstorms and reduced wind shear. Tropical cyclones become stronger when they pass over warm water and areas of low wind shear. By July or August, weather models show La Niña will likely develop and become moderate to strong around the peak of the hurricane season (September to October). FPL tests readiness with simulated storm Regardless of conditions, FPL is better prepared for hurricanes than at any time in the company’s history through its year-round improvements to make the energy grid smarter, stronger and more storm resilient. These investments, including the deployment of smart grid devices and installation of underground power lines, benefit customers by reducing outage times and restoration costs associated with severe weather events. FPL also prepares for hurricane season by stress-testing employees with a week-long, simulated hurricane response, typically in the early days of May just as the start of hurricane season comes into view. While the storm is fictitious, FPL’s response is not. The training scenario feels every bit as real, in part, because of detailed weather forecasts and simulated impacts to the state. “I put together mock scripts and simulated weather shows from our studio to imitate a real-world situation. We take lessons learned from these drills and previous storms to continue improving our response,” said Kerr. His realistic weather updates are relayed to Distribution Operations Manager Casey Sheffield, who oversees the deployment of resources (crews, trucks, and equipment) during day-to-day operations. “During a real storm, the command center team can pre-stage thousands of resources while allowing crews to continue working until Kerr informs us of unsafe weather conditions,” said Sheffield. “At the end of the day, the goal is to always cut down on restoration times for our customers." The drill is a comprehensive test of FPL's storm response capabilities. It involves most departments within the company, such as customer service and communications, ensuring that everyone is aligned and ready to act quickly and safely in the event of a real storm. "Being part of this drill reminds me of the responsibility we have to our customers. We want them to be prepared for anything mother nature may bring this hurricane season, just as we are,” said Kerr. FPL urges customers to be aware of potential safety hazards, especially before, during and after severe weather. Customers can find tips on how to prepare on: www.FPL.com/Storm < Previous News Next News >

  • A Showcase of Skill and Community Spirit: The Broward County Transit 2025 Bus Safety Roadeo

A Showcase of Skill and Community Spirit: The Broward County Transit 2025 Bus Safety Roadeo January 29, 2025 Share Everyday heroes often operate in the background, unnoticed yet indispensable. Such is the case with bus operators, professionals whose expertise and commitment ensure the seamless movement of a bustling community. But once a year, they step into the spotlight for an event that celebrates their skills, precision, and dedication: the Broward County Transit 2025 Bus Safety Roadeo. This year, for the first time, the Roadeo leaves the closed gates of its traditional venue at the Copans Garage and moves to the open spaces of the Amerant Bank Arena Park and Ride Lot at Gate 7. Scheduled for Sunday, February 2, 2025, this historic shift transforms the competition into a public display, inviting families, transit enthusiasts, and curious residents to witness firsthand the incredible talents of BCT’s finest bus operators. The thrill begins as 11 of BCT’s most skilled operators navigate an intricate obstacle course, their movements precise and their focus unwavering. Each turn of the wheel and every maneuver showcase the expertise needed to guide massive buses through Broward County’s busy streets, a task they perform daily with unmatched professionalism. The 2025 competition welcomes "Flash" Jacquan, the 2024 Broward County Roadeo winner and standout participant. In 2023, he secured the Rookie of the Year title at the state level, ranking seventh out of 19 skilled competitors—a testament to his expertise and dedication. Though Jacquan isn’t competing this year, his presence exemplifies the camaraderie and shared passion that makes the Roadeo special. But this isn’t just a test of skill; it’s a celebration for the entire community. The Roadeo has evolved into a family-friendly festival with food trucks offering diverse cuisines, family-friendly games and activities, giveaways, and a festive atmosphere. With live DJ and radio broadcasts, the day promises memorable entertainment for all ages. At the heart of the event is a deeper message: public transit's critical role in connecting people to jobs and essential services. Events like the Roadeo offer a glimpse into the professionalism and dedication behind each bus ride, reminding us of the often-overlooked individuals who keep Broward County moving. “This year’s Roadeo is a unique opportunity to bring our community closer to the transit system,” said Coree Cuff Lonergan, CEO/General Manager of Broward County Transit. “It’s a celebration not just of skill but of the community connection that underlines Broward County Transit.” The day culminates with an award ceremony at 12:30 PM, honoring the operators who have excelled in the competition. Beyond the trophies, the winners earn the privilege of representing Broward County Transit at the 2025 Florida Triple Crown Roadeo in Gainesville later this month. If they win at the State level, they will have the distinct honor of representing BCT at the International Bus Roadeo in Austin, TX in April. So, mark your calendars, grab your loved ones, and head to the Amerant Bank Arena on Sunday, February 2, 2025, beginning at 8:30 AM for an unforgettable day of fun, community, and awe-inspiring skill. • Rethinking Career Decisions: Why College Is No Longer The Unquestioned Path | sun-times

Rethinking Career Decisions: Why College Is No Longer The Unquestioned Path By Feature Impact Jul 23, 2026 For Generations, Students Have Been Told A College Degree Is Key To Landing A Well-Paying Job And Building A Stable Future. Long Treated As The Gold Standard For Post-Secondary Education, Albeit An Expensive One, The Four-Year Degree Is No Longer The Unquestioned Path To Career Success. New research from the U.S. Career Institute, an online career training provider, suggests many Americans are rethinking what education and long-term job security actually look like. While college remains a popular path, 26% of adults surveyed said certifications or skills-based programs are the safer choice. Just 18% said the same about a four-year degree. In fact, if given the chance to do it all over again, 27% of respondents said they would choose a different path entirely, and 33% said they would look for something faster or more affordable. Knowing what they know now, just 17% reported they would make the same choice again; meaning more U.S. adults are now willing to ask if college is the right call. Cost is Getting Harder to Ignore Long sold as an investment that would pay for itself in time, the price tag that accompanies that college degree is increasingly scrutinized. While 38% of survey respondents said paying for college feels like a necessary investment despite the expense, 29% said they question whether it's a worthwhile expenditure. What's more, 32% of respondents said they would reconsider investing in a college education if student loan debt exceeded $10,000, even as the price of obtaining a degree continues to climb. AI is Leading to Job Security Concerns The rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence is adding another layer of uncertainty. In fact, 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. believe office-based and white-collar workers are the type of employees most likely to be replaced by AI in the next five years. As automation becomes a bigger part of workplace conversations, it's also influencing how people think about their futures, with more than half (54%) of respondents reconsidering their education or career path due to concerns about job security or automation. For some, that reconsideration is already translating into action. A quarter of respondents (25%) have already completed a certificate or skills-based training program while another 29% said they've seriously considered pursuing one. Stability is Taking Center Stage Prestige, job title and earning potential have long influenced post-secondary education choices. However, stability has become the most commonly cited factor influencing career decisions today, named by 53% of respondents, ranking it above prestige and status. That same mindset is shaping the advice people give younger generations. For those starting their careers now, 30% of survey respondents said they would recommend a certification or skills-based program while 24% said they'd still recommend pursuing a four-year degree. For many careers, a college degree remains a requirement. However, it may no longer be the only path forward for every student entering the workforce.
