Respect: A Musical Journey Of Women “Above All, RESPECT Is A Celebration Of The Collective Strength Of Women" South Florida Sun Times Feb 27, 2025 From Lily Langtree to Cyndi Lauper and Betty Boop to Tina Turner, or from Rosie the Riveter to Britney Spears, female singers and pop stars and their music provide a vivid reflection of how much has changed for women since the beginning of the 20th century. RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women, the fourth production of the Pompano Players’ inaugural season, will open on March 28th at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center and run through April 6th. RESPECT : A Musical Journey of Women which has evolved from a one-woman dissertation by Dr. Dorothy Marcic to an international hit musical revue since its 2004 debut in South Florida, is an entertaining, exuberant, and exhilarating look at the lives of women as reflected in the popular music of the times. Featuring an ensemble cast of four: Dalia Aleman, Noelle Nicholas, Heather Simsay, and Anneliese Wolfanger and a live band, and combining excerpts from 60 songs including “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “I Will Follow Him,” “These Boots are Made for Walking,“”What’s Love Got to Do with It,” and “Brave with women’s own stories about finding dreams, lost love, relationship issues, entering the workforce, gaining independence, and more, RESPECT has resonated with audiences around the world. Men as well as women have no trouble at all identifying with the messages of encouragement and empowerment that RESPECT portrays. “RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women is more than just a jukebox musical – it is a celebration of resilience, empowerment, and the evolving role of women through the decades,” says the show’s Director, Jeremy Quinn. “Through the powerful lens of music, this production tells the story of struggle, triumph, love, and identity, all woven together by the unforgettable songs that defined generations. “As a director, my vision for this production is to honor the spirit of the women who lived these stories while making them deeply personal and relevant for today’s audiences,” he continues. “Each song – from “I Will Survive” to “You Don’t Own Me” – is more than just a melody; it is a testament to the voices that refused to be silenced, to the dreams that refused to fade, and to the ongoing fight for equality and respect. “This show is a journey – one that takes us from the innocent love songs of the early 20th century to the powerful anthems of independence that fuel modern movements. My goal is to craft a production that is not only entertaining but also thought-provoking, one that sparks conversations and reflections about how far we’ve come and the work that remains,” he says. “Above all, RESPECT is a celebration of the collective strength of women. It is a reminder that music has the power to inspire, to heal, and to unite. I am honored to bring this journey to life on stage and to share in this tribute to the voices, past and present, that continue to demand—and deserve – respect.” “I loved the show. • Preserving Legacy Or Inviting Litigation - How Well-Meaning Estate Planning Language Can Either Preserve Family Harmony Or Become Evidence In Probate Court | sun-times

Preserving Legacy Or Inviting Litigation - How Well-Meaning Estate Planning Language Can Either Preserve Family Harmony Or Become Evidence In Probate Court By Merilee Kern, MBA Mar 26, 2026 As Wealth Transfers Accelerate And Multi-Generational Planning Becomes More Sophisticated, Families Are Increasingly Looking Beyond Traditional Wills And Trusts To Articulate Values, Purpose, And Long-Term Vision. One Tool Gaining Attention Is The Family Mission Statement. While Often Viewed As A Unifying Document Designed To Preserve Legacy And Harmony, Estate Litigation Attorney Don Ford Cautions That These Statements Carry Legal Implications That Families May Not Fully Appreciate. When Disputes Arise, Even Informal Writings Can Influence How Intent Is Interpreted In Court. Estate planning disputes rarely begin with bad intentions. According to Probate, Trust and Estate Planning Attorney Don Ford, Managing Partner at Ford + Bergner LLP, most probate and trust conflicts arise because family members disagree about what someone meant, what they wanted, or how much discretion a fiduciary was expected to exercise. Ford, a seasoned Probate and Trust Litigation Attorney, frequently speaks about the growing use of family mission statements in estate planning. While these documents are not legally binding in most jurisdictions, he explains that they can significantly influence how courts interpret intent when disputes arise. “A family mission statement can either clarify a legacy or complicate it,” Ford says. “It depends entirely on how it is drafted and whether it aligns with the governing estate documents.” A family mission statement typically outlines a family’s values, long term priorities, and philosophical approach to wealth. It may address stewardship, philanthropy, education expectations, work ethic, entrepreneurship, or the broader purpose behind trusts and multi-generational planning. Unlike a will or trust, it is generally informational rather than legally enforceable. However, Ford cautions that informational does not mean irrelevant. “In litigation, anything that sheds light on intent may become evidence,” he explains. “If a dispute involves discretionary distributions or fiduciary judgment, opposing parties often look for supporting language wherever they can find it.” When carefully coordinated with estate planning documents, family mission statements can reduce the likelihood of conflict. They can provide context for trustee decisions, clarify why distributions are structured a certain way, and help beneficiaries understand the reasoning behind unequal allocations. According to Ford, clarity often discourages litigation by managing expectations early. At the same time, poorly drafted statements can create problems. If the language contradicts a will or trust, beneficiaries may argue that the legally binding documents do not reflect the decedent’s true intent. Vague phrases such as treating everyone fairly or supporting family success can invite competing interpretations in court. “Ambiguity is the oxygen of litigation,” Ford notes. “The more room there is for interpretation, the greater the risk of dispute.” He also warns against attempting to impose moral or lifestyle directives through non-binding language. Beneficiaries may challenge fiduciaries who try to enforce expectations that lack legal authority, while others may accuse fiduciaries of ignoring stated family values. Generally speaking, family mission statements are not enforceable unless their provisions are formally incorporated into a valid will or trust. Even so, courts may consider them when evaluating fiduciary discretion or alleged breaches of duty. This makes alignment between the statement and the estate plan essential. Ford advocates what he calls litigation aware estate planning. “Estate planning is not just about transferring assets,” he says. “It is about anticipating human dynamics. If you understand how disputes unfold in court, you can draft documents that reduce the risk of conflict.” For families considering a mission statement, Ford recommends ensuring it aligns with all governing documents, clearly stating that it is non-binding, avoiding subjective language, and reviewing it periodically as circumstances change. “A thoughtful mission statement can strengthen a legacy,” Ford concludes. “But it must be drafted with precision and with an understanding of how it could be used in a courtroom.” About Merilee Kern, MBA Entrepreneur Leadership Network member Merilee Kern, MBA is an internationally-regarded brand and leadership strategist who reports on noteworthy industry change makers, movers, shakers and innovators across all B2B and B2C categories. • Blown Away: A True Cinderella Story at WMODA

Blown Away: A True Cinderella Story at WMODA By Louise Irvine - www.wmoda.com September 1, 2022 Share It’s true what Cinderella says, “One shoe can change your life!” and we have 50 of them at WMODA! Thanks to the brilliance of Miami Glass Artist Rob Stern, our latest exhibition caught the attention of Deco Drive, the daily entertainment news magazine program on Channel 7 which reports on trends and celebrities in South Florida. WSVN Reporter Alex Miranda visited WMODA and was so dazzled by Stern’s Stilettos, he reenacted Carrie Bradshaw’s urban shoe myth scene from Sex & The City. Rob’s new obsession with designer shoes was inspired by his wife’s vast collection which includes: Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo and Alexander McQueen. However, Rob’s stilettos are even more extreme in glass with wild bejeweled designs to make even Lady Gaga swoon. His play on words and punning titles bring an entertaining new dimension to the designer shoe fetish. Step into WMODA soon to see Stern’s Stilettos. You will also be amused by his wiener dog inspired by Jeff Koons’ balloon sculptures. Rob’s “hot dog” has become the museum’s new mascot and helps us explain the glassmaking process to kids. It is just like blowing up a balloon or a bubble of soapsuds although the shards are very sharp when the bubble bursts! Over 25 summers, Rob has had lots of fun blowing giant glass bubbles at Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State where he began as a student and became a master gaffer and teacher. Rob Stern has been exploring glass “beyond the bubble” at WMODA ever since we launched our Art on Fire Exhibit in 2019. We were excited to discover that he was trained by the modern maestros of glass, including Dale Chihuly, Pino Signoretto and Lino Tagliapietra. In fact, he was in Pino’s Studio on the day that the three masters began collaborating on the Venetian Putti series. We invited Rob to talk about his relationship with his mentors at our spectacular Chihuly & Chocolate event in 2019 and began to showcase some of his work in our Hot Glass Gallery. A new star was born at WMODA when we installed Rob’s Constellations of Windstars which are dedicated to his father, a consummate stargazer fascinated with the cosmic phenomenon. Rob has been involved in our museum events and exhibits celebrating art and nature, including Out of this World and Earth · Air · Fire · Water where he presented his leaves of glass, bamboo forest, and giant shells. At one of these events, Arthur Wiener, the founder of WMODA, became enamored with Rob’s work. He acquired many of his favorite pieces for the museum’s permanent collection, including the conceptual Memory Loss symbolizing Dementia. Rob was born in Miami and grew up in Atlanta where he trained initially for a career in the performing arts and toured as a singer, dancer and actor. It was during his art studies at San Francisco State University that he discovered glassmaking. After a five-year apprenticeship at an industrial glass casting facility in Oakland, California, he toured glass factories in Europe before coming under the spell of Dale Chihuly, Pino Signoretto and Lino Tagliapietra. Rob has also been influenced by the Bohemian glass-making tradition. He was a teaching assistant to Petr Novotny, also a Chihuly collaborator and worked for several years at the Ajeto Glassworks in the Czech Republic. Rob returned to Miami in 1997 to complete his MFA at the University of Miami and he helped develop and run their glass sculpture program for many years. In 2000, he set up his own Studio in Wynwood, Rob Stern Art Glass, where he works with his team making signature works, site-specific installations and lighting designs. Rob exhibits his work widely and has been invited to give demonstrations and workshops at famous glass institutions around the country as well as international symposiums. For the Glass Art Society Conference in Murano, Rob created a mirrored top hat and illuminated suit in honor of his mentor Pino Signoretto. Rob’s work is sold through the Studio Collection at the WMODA Shop. You can also commission custom designs through the museum, including wall art, lighting installations and garden sculptures. The WMODA (Wiener Museum of Decorative Arts) is a world-class museum in South Florida. The museum features thousands of works from the world’s most renowned ceramic and glass artists. The WMODA (Wiener Museum of Decorative Arts) is located at 481 South Federal Highway, Dania Beach, Florida 33004 inside the Gallery of Amazing Things. Forchion - LOVE Aventura February 16, 2023 Share On February 25, 2023 at 8:00 pm, Aventura Arts & Cultural Center audiences will be enchanted by the robust vocal prowess of singer-songwriter Kimberley Locke, the front-running American Idol alum and recording artist who many of her loyal fans consider as entertainment’s quintessential “8th World Wonder.” After gracing the Aventura mainstage a decade ago, Locke will return to the Center to premiere her critically-acclaimed one-woman show, “The Sum of All Parts.” Through selections of storytelling and songs, the performance will chronicle various moments of her life and reveal her introduction to some of her favorite luminaries including Nina Simone, Judy Garland, and Etta James. The musical production will be arranged with a live, 12-person orchestra and staged in an intimate manner reflective of her desire to connect with her audience on a deeper level. “The one-woman show is something that I always wanted to do and I finally developed the confidence to do it,” said Locke. “Once I decided to tell my story, I wrote the show with a close friend of mine with the purpose of diving beneath the surface in terms of a story to share information about myself personally, and not just musically. You’ll surely learn something about Kimberley Locke once you leave the performance, which is the goal.” “The Sum of All Parts” was first conceptualized and performed by Locke in front of a sold-out New York City audience in February 2020– one month before the world’s stage changed forever and theaters went dark due to the pandemic. After headlining Norwegian Cruise Line’s seabound version of the Tony Award-nominated musical “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical,” Locke is energized and prepared to bask in the spotlight once again. “I want people to be curious about who I am as a person, which will explain who I am as a singer,” she said. Locke views the timing of her premiere during Black History Month as ideal in not only sharing her own story, but also amplifying the voices of significant Black women in hopes of introducing the Aventura audience to new and different perspectives. “My show presents an opportunity to spotlight some important Black women in music who found it crucial to use their voices to tell their stories, and how they were able to move people and penetrate different social issues during their time,” she said. “I’m honored to be on stage to tell these stories while I tell my own story, which creates a richer experience for everyone.” Through her display of vulnerability beyond the bright lights, Locke hopes that her one-woman show will inspire audiences to tap into their inner abilities to heal certain aspects of their own lives. “Over the years, I’ve learned that by sharing, we not only heal ourselves, but it helps other people heal as well. Being more vulnerable in 2023 is something I wish to do, both mentally and emotionally, to open the book of my life for people to read.” Locke anticipates an incomparable exchange of energy between herself and her show’s attendees. “There’s something magical about being aligned and in tune with a live orchestra, and I can’t wait to bring the experience to Aventura,” she said. “When people come to my show, I want to tell a story as a person while the audience receives the joy of my gift.” Tickets for “The Sum of All Parts” can be purchased at Ticketmaster, or from the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center box office. Additional event details, such as the availability of VIP and premium packages, can be found here. For more information on Kimberley Locke’s premiere, please visit www.aventuracenter.org . • The Tragic Event of Champlain Towers Is Still Resonating Around The Globe

The Tragic Event of Champlain Towers Is Still Resonating Around The Globe By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper July 1, 2021 Share CADENA Israel is a nonprofit organization dedicated to assist in emergencies and prevention of natural disasters around the world. ( Cadena Israel Facebook Photo June 26th Surfside Fl - www.facebook.com/cadenaenisrael/ ) Words cannot express the deep sadness many of us felt when we heard the news. As of Monday, there was still hope and officials continued search and rescue operations. Our prayers need to continue. I am so proud of our City and the help that we are providing to assist Mayor Burkett and their staff. A special prayer also goes out to all of the first responders that have been working around the clock. A special thank you goes to Cadena Israel, a special search and recovery team from Israel and there are others from around the state that came to help. The speculation and theories that have been presented over the building failure, is now on all of our minds. I want to inform our Residents and Our Staff, that on Thursday, when we went to work to evaluate all of our condominium's statuses and audits of those that have or have not filed building inspections. In 2005, Broward County adopted the 40 Year Building Safety Inspection Program. It was created after a tragic building collapse in Miami. In 1974, there was a garage collapse that killed seven people, as well as numerous balcony collapses. Ironically, Dade County, has had a program since the 1970’s, which provides mandatory inspections of structural, integral and electrical of all buildings that are 40 years old, except for single family homes. We are different from Dade County, which has set a threshold 6 stories or more. There is an annual schedule that has been established by the County. Every June, The Property Appraiser, sends a list to the Board of Rules and Appeals. BORA is a separate, statewide agency that has individual boards in each County which regulates building codes and standards. Each BORA, sends the city building departments their list of buildings due for inspections. Each building official, in turn, sends written notifications to each building by August. Upon receipt of the notice, building boards have 90 days to hire an engineer, provide the completed building's inspections check list and if there are findings, then the building has 180 days to complete all of the repairs. As with any regulations, there are some interpretations that impact repairs that are dependent on the engineer’s report. Repairs that are deemed eminent or life threatening are prioritized, those that are not are handled differently. These decisions are the building official’s responsibility. There is a point in which the official report can reveal any unsafe building structures. The building officials can also deem emergency closures of the buildings. Over the years, I have heard complaints from so many unit owners about condo boards and having to pay assessments for repairs. Sadly, due to this event, hopefully it has driven home, that the fact of living in a condo, your responsibly does not stop when you shut your front door. Monthly maintenance payments do not mean, that you have paid for everything to maintain your building's safety structures. Just like a single-family home, you need to replace the roof, the paint, sealant and repairing of structural issues. On the other hand, we also have boards that do not do their jobs in ensuring their buildings are maintained. Many buildings waive reserves that result in large lump sum assessments and then many unit owners cannot pay. I blame our state legislators for this issue and those that lobbied for this waiver. As we have heard, out of Surfside, there are two buildings that were built the same way, at the same time, but they were maintained differently and they are in different conditions. Even putting off painting and sealing, can have adverse impacts and the worse impact structural integrity, which can lead to failure, as we have witnessed with this grave tragedy. Even though our Commission takes a break over the 4th Of July holiday, I along with my colleagues are following up on these issues. I am sure, that we will be working with Broward County and other cities, who are evaluating the current programs, to see if there is a need of much more rigorous inspections, particularly for those along the coast. I want to thank our City Manager Earle and Assistant City Manager Sandoval for being very proactive by doing an audit of our buildings. I also want to recognize the hard work of Commissioner Lima Taub. We joined together, to make sure the Condominium Transparency Act was passed in our City. Each Condo is required to register on-line with our City. Included in the registry is: Whether or not, the building has had its forty year inspection, current projects, budgets and other critical information, this will assure residents of what is, or is not taking place in their respective buildings. This program has been endorsed by realtors in Broward County, Miami-Dade County and Palm Beach County, I am sure we will be looking at it again. Wishing you all, a very safe and blessed 4th of July! • Attention Condo Residents: A New Regulation Will Impact Every Condominium With Three Stories or More

Attention Condo Residents: A New Regulation Will Impact Every Condominium With Three Stories or More By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper July 14, 2022 Share During the Special Session, our State Legislators Passed a new Regulation that will impact every Condominium with three stories or more. We know about the tragedy of Champlain Towers. As we heard more about the collapse, we understood how Boards Deferred Maintenance. Also changed Boards to stop Assessments and or watered down what truly needed to be done. While one may argue that the original construction was at fault the reality is continued maintenance of a building is essential. Items as simple as painting and waterproofing are needed to preserve a building's integrity. This is even more important with buildings that are along our Coast. I want to make something extremely clear. As cities our Building Departments are Required to make sure that Florida Building Codes are followed. This is for everyone’s Safety. Permits are Required. Most Contractors know, understand and follow the Rules. There are some that simply do not want to File Permits or do not have the capacity too. They file with mistakes or omissions that delay the Permits. This is often blamed on the City when it is simply finger pointing. The responsibility does not simply lay with the City or Contractors. Condominium Boards, Maintenance Staff and Residents all have a role to play in the process! Daily maintenance and observation of areas of concern are vital. Residents must understand that monthly maintenance does not cover major items. Reserves are what is put aside to make sure roofs, building envelopes and systems can be fixed or replaced. Once these Reserves are Waived it simply means that what should be done is kicked down the road. The result is Deferred Maintenance and then large lump sum Assessments. The ability to Waive Reserves has set up the type of disaster we saw play out in Surfside. Thankfully, the new Law that was passed has broad financial impacts to every building. Work must be performed. Condominium Buildings with three or more stories are now subject to “Milestone Inspections,” meant to ensure their structural Safety. A Licensed Architect or Structural Engineer must complete this Inspection. During the Inspection, the Architect or Structural Engineer must first complete a “Phase 1” Inspection of the building, which consists of a Visual Inspection and a Qualitative Assessment of the building’s condition, documented in a Written Report. That Report must be given to both the Associations and any Local Building Official who has Authority over the Association. Our City, thanks to the work of Commissioner Lima-Taub, has an On-Line database already setup that provides Condominium Documentation. We also have set up an inventory of buildings citywide covering 40 year and 50-year Inspections. This new Law Requires direct distribution to all unit Owners and Renters. The result must be posted in a conspicuous place on the property and on the Association’s Web-Site if it has one. In addition, it must be maintained in the Association’s Records for at least 15 years. If any Structural Deterioration is noted during that first Inspection, then an additional “Phase 2” Inspection is Required. “Phase 2” includes any Supplemental Testing that is Required in the Initial Inspection Report. The Inspection Requirements also include: any other item with deferred Maintenance or Replacement Expenses in excess of $10,000 which, if not performed, would negatively impact the aforementioned components. Visual Inspection must be performed by a Licensed Architect or engineer, but other “qualified” persons can perform other portions of the Reserve Study. For example: Electrical and Plumbing. While many buildings have or are doing their Inspection the need to save for future needs has changed. Also, buildings with Certificates of Occupancy issued prior to July 1st, 1992, the Initial Inspection is due on December 31st, 2024, and every ten years thereafter. The Law also speeds up and changes new Building Requirements. Condominiums and Cooperatives with CO’s issued on July 1st, 1992, or after Inspections due by December 31st of the year in which the building reaches 5 years of age. For buildings within three miles of Coastline, or 30 years of age and for buildings not within three miles of Coastline every 10 years thereafter. Upon Notification from the Enforcement Agency of a Past-Due Milestone Inspection, the Association must submit the Inspection Report within 180 days. There are also now teeth that impact every board. Willful and knowing failure to obtain Milestone Inspections Constitute a Breach of officers and directors’ fiduciary duties. Repairs recommended pursuant to Milestone Inspection must commence within the earlier of 365 days from submission of the report. If it is deemed by the Local Authority repairs will be required sooner. Failure to perform repairs within the mandated time period requires the Local Enforcement Authority to Conduct a Review to determine if the building is Unsafe for Human Occupancy.
