- Holiday Travel Tips - For Those Traveling with a Loved One with Dementia
Holiday Travel Tips - For Those Traveling with a Loved One with Dementia December 5, 2024 Share One of the busiest travel times of the year is approaching, with nearly 80 million Americans are planning to travel during the long holiday period, according to AAA estimates. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is offering tips to help those traveling with a loved one with a Dementia-related illness make their trip as easy and comfortable as possible. “A family trip to visit a loved one, friend, or favorite destination can be a great way to spend the holiday season, including for those affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and other Dementia-related illnesses, including those affected by Dementia.” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services “Whether traveling near or far, there are preparations and adaptations family caregivers can make to help their loved one feel more comfortable and relaxed throughout the trip.” Before The Trip Make sure travel is advisable. Someone in the early stages of Dementia may still enjoy traveling, but as the disease progresses, travel may become too difficult. Factoring in the trip’s duration and/or the stage of the person’s illness, consult with their physician to make sure travel is recommended. Plan according to the person’s abilities. Plan the travel mode and timing of your trip in ways that minimize anxiety and stress. Assess the person’s abilities and needs when making arrangements; if they travel better at a specific time of day, try to schedule plans for that period of time. Preserve the person’s routine. Small or unfamiliar changes can be overwhelming and stressful to someone with Dementia, so to the greatest extent possible, maintain the person’s routine. For example, if they normally eat at a certain time, build that into the itinerary. Stock up before leaving. Bring snacks, water, activities and supportive items (i.e., a blanket, the person’s favorite sweater, a soft pillow). Include an extra and comfortable change of clothing that adapts to climate changes. Take important health and legal-related documentation, a list of current medications, and physician information with you. If Traveling by Mass Transit Know the security procedures. Check in advance with airports/train stations about security screening procedures and arrive early for a less stressful experience. This way, you can familiarize the person ahead of time about what will happen at the checkpoint. This can reduce potential anxiety. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) offers assistance with the screening process to air travelers with certain medical conditions, including Dementia-related illnesses; contact their TSA Cares Helpline at least 72 hours prior to your flight to learn more. Advise the airline. Let the airline know that you’re traveling with someone who has cognitive impairments and inform them of safety concerns and special needs. If traveling by car build in break time. Take regular breaks on road trips for food, bathroom visits, and rest. Families with questions about traveling with someone who has a Dementia-related illness can speak with a licensed social worker through the AFA Helpline by phone: (866) 232-8484, Text message (646) 586-5283. Or webchat: www.alzfdn.org - The helpline is available seven days a week. Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is a Non-Profit Organization whose mission is to provide support, services and education to individuals, families and caregivers affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and related Dementias nationwide and to fund research for better treatment and a cure. Its services include a National Toll-Free Helpline: (866) 232-8484 staffed entirely by licensed social workers, caregiver support groups, educational programs and publications for caregivers, Dementia-care training for healthcare professionals, the National Memory Screening Program, and more. - Frustration At The Pump - Why Americans Are Exploring Electric Vehicles | sun-times
Frustration At The Pump - Why Americans Are Exploring Electric Vehicles South Florida Sun Times Jun 4, 2026 For More Than One-Third Of Americans, One Simple Number Is Changing The Way They Think About Driving: The Final Total On A Gas Station Receipt. What was once a routine stop has become a source of frustration for millions of drivers across the country. The rising cost of fuel is no longer viewed as a temporary inconvenience but as an ongoing financial burden that affects everyday decisions, from commuting to family road trips. According to new research from Hyundai Motor America, this growing frustration is pushing many Americans to explore alternatives to traditional gas-powered vehicles, particularly electric vehicles (EVs). For some, the idea begins as a passing thought while standing at the pump. For others, it quickly becomes serious research into what life without gasoline might actually look like. The survey found that 23% of respondents said they have experienced sticker shock at the pump more than once, and nearly half admitted that filling up their vehicle now brings feelings of frustration or outright dread. Drivers are increasingly reaching a point where the numbers simply stop making sense. Many consumers already have a tipping point in mind — a specific gas price where they begin reconsidering the long-term practicality of driving a gasoline-powered vehicle. For 23% of those surveyed, that threshold is $5 per gallon. Once prices climb into that territory, many Americans begin exploring alternatives. What starts as curiosity can quickly turn into action. Some drivers begin comparing vehicle models online. Others visit automaker websites or research charging stations in their area. Even those who are not immediately ready to buy often find themselves thinking more seriously about Electric Vehicles than they expected. In fact, 46% of respondents said they would be likely to seriously research an EV. For many Americans, the appeal of an Electric Vehicle goes beyond environmental considerations. Increasingly, the motivation is practical. Drivers are looking for ways to reduce unpredictable fuel expenses, simplify their routines, and gain more control over monthly transportation costs. One of the biggest advantages of driving an EV is the ability to charge at home. Instead of making weekly stops at a gas station, many EV owners simply plug in their vehicles overnight and wake up to a fully charged battery each morning. For commuters, this can fundamentally change the driving experience. Rather than monitoring gas prices or planning fuel stops during busy weeks, charging becomes part of a daily routine similar to plugging in a smartphone. For households with access to home charging, the convenience factor can be significant. The financial benefits can also add up over time. While electricity prices vary by region, charging an EV is often less expensive than paying for gasoline, particularly during periods of high fuel costs. Many utility companies also offer discounted overnight charging rates, allowing drivers to save even more by charging during off-peak hours. In addition to fuel savings, EVs typically require less routine maintenance than traditional gas-powered vehicles. Because Electric Vehicles do not rely on internal combustion engines, they eliminate the need for oil changes and reduce wear on several mechanical components. Over the life of the vehicle, these savings can become meaningful for drivers looking to lower overall ownership costs. For drivers with long commutes or families constantly on the move, the idea of reducing both fuel expenses and maintenance appointments can be particularly appealing. Still, the transition to Electric Vehicles is not without concerns. According to the survey, charging access and range anxiety remain the top barriers for 28% of potential buyers. Many Americans continue to worry about whether charging stations will be available when needed or whether an EV can comfortably handle long-distance travel. These concerns are especially common among drivers who have never owned an Electric Vehicle before. Questions about charging times, battery range, and Infrastructure availability often create hesitation, even among consumers who are otherwise interested in making the switch. However, charging networks across the country continue to expand, and many newer EV models now offer significantly longer driving ranges than earlier generations. For many daily commuters, modern EV ranges are more than sufficient for regular driving needs, allowing several days of use between charges depending on mileage and driving habits. Public charging options are also becoming more common in shopping centers, office buildings, parking garages, hotels, and along major highways. While gasoline stations remain deeply familiar to American drivers, the charging landscape is evolving rapidly as consumer interest grows. Another factor influencing EV interest is predictability. Gas prices can fluctuate dramatically due to seasonal demand, global events, or supply disruptions, leaving drivers vulnerable to sudden spikes in transportation costs. Electricity costs, while not immune to change, are often viewed as more stable and easier to budget around. That predictability matters for households already navigating rising costs in other areas of life. For some consumers, switching to an EV represents less about adopting new technology and more about creating consistency in their monthly expenses. The emotional experience of driving also plays a role. Many first-time EV drivers describe the vehicles as quieter, smoother, and more responsive than they anticipated. Instant torque and simplified drivetrains can create a different kind of driving experience that surprises consumers who originally focused only on fuel savings. As automakers continue introducing new EV models across a wider range of price points and vehicle categories, consumers are finding more options that fit their lifestyles. Compact sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, and luxury vehicles are all becoming part of the growing electric marketplace. Still, experts note that the decision to switch remains deeply personal and often gradual. Most consumers do not move directly from frustration at the pump to purchasing an EV overnight. Instead, the process typically begins with awareness. A high gas bill leads to online research. Research leads to comparisons. Comparisons lead to test drives and conversations. Over time, what once felt unfamiliar can begin feeling increasingly practical. For many Americans, the shift toward electric vehicles is no longer being driven solely by environmental messaging or future-focused innovation. It is being shaped by everyday experiences and household economics. The gas pump, once viewed as an unavoidable part of driving, is now becoming a moment of reconsideration. And for a growing number of consumers, that reconsideration is opening the door to Electric Vehicles. - Say Cheese - Shavuot Holiday 101 | sun-times
Say Cheese - Shavuot Holiday 101 By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil May 22, 2025 At A Unique Crossroads Between Religion And Cuisine, The Holiday Of Shavuot, Celebrating The Giving Of The Torah At Mount Sinai Some 3,337 Years Ago, Has Become A Celebration Of Fine Dairy Cuisine As Well. Shavuot Is Celebrated For Two Days, This Year Beginning At Sundown On Sunday, June 1st, 2025 And Ending At Nightfall On Tuesday, June 3rd. 50 days after leaving Egypt on Passover, the Jewish people received the Torah from G-d at Mount Sinai on the holiday of Shavuot. Shavuot literally means “weeks” and marks the completion of the seven-week counting period between Passover and Shavuot. Shavuot customs include all-night Torah study, listening to the recitation of the Ten Commandments, the reading of the Book of Ruth, eating dairy products and adorning the home with flowers. With the giving of the Torah, the Jews became obligated to observe the Kosher Laws. As the Torah was given on Shabbat, no cattle or poultry could be slaughtered, nor could we make sure that the animal's insides were healthy and then properly cleaned out as is required in order for the meat to be Kosher. In addition, utensils could not be Koshered and as such we ate dairy. Exquisite cheesecakes, pesto pastas, lasagna, souffles, eggplant parmesan and of course, cheese blintzes all take center stage during this ancient celebration. When thinking Jewish Holidays, Passover, Chanukah and Yom Kippur usually come to mind first. Nevertheless, Shavuot is considered one of Judaism's main holidays and was in fact a “pilgrimage” when all of Israel would travel to Jerusalem to celebrate in the Temple in Jerusalem. No, it isn't all about the food. Especially in lieu of what's been happening in the world since Simchat Torah on October 7th, 2003, what is important is that the community is joining together, hearing the Ten Commandments and celebrating the Torah. But the good food certainly helps. The tradition to learn all night has been practiced ever since we received the Torah. On the very night before G-d gave the Torah, we went to sleep, waking late in the morning. As a symbolic rectification for this, Jews customarily stay awake studying Torah until the morning, on the first night of Shavuot, this year on Sunday night. Since we all stood at Mount Sinai, we must all reaffirm our commitment. On Monday, June 2nd, the Ten Commandments will be read aloud from the Torah. Special emphasis is placed on including the entire Jewish family, including little babies, the way the Torah’s giving was attended by every Jewish man, woman and child. The word Torah means “instruction” or “guide.” The Torah guides our steps and moves through its 613 Mitzvahs. The word Mitzvah means both “commandment” and “connection.” Through the study of Torah and fulfillment of Mitzvahs, we connect ourselves and our environment to G‑d. G‑d’s purpose in creating the world was that all of creation be sanctified, imbuing it with holiness and spirituality. Since Shavuot is also called the “Harvest Festival,” it is customary to adorn the home with fruits, flowers and greens. Most of us are, thank G-d, able to get out and celebrate the way we have for over three thousand years. But for those that are for whatever reason staying home, that should in no way stop you from celebrating the holiday, since most of the holiday is super easy to celebrate even while at home alone. Not going to work, Eating dairy, Praying the special holiday prayers, Studying Torah all night, Decorating the home with flowers, The only things that we can't do without a quorum, are hearing the Ten Commandments read from the Torah and praying with a minyan. But you can still study the Ten Commandments from a Torah Book, known as a Chumash. And you can still read Yizkor, even without a minyan. To learn more about Shavuot and the many customs associated with it, visit: www.ChabadChayil.org/Shavuot. There you can also get delicious dairy & dairy-like recipes, send free holiday greeting cards, download the prayers & suggested all night Torah study. If you are able to go out, then you should certainly make sure to attend services this holiday, at least to hear the Ten Commandments read from the Torah on Monday morning and of course to thank G-d that you're feeling well. Both concerts will start at 7:30 p.m. A pre-concert chat with Dr. Alan Mason will take place 30 minutes before the show at New World Center featuring in-depth conversation and insights about the work and composer. "Mozart was the original rebel - bold, unapologetic, and well ahead of his time," says Maestra Alfonso. "Conducting his Requiem feels like stepping into the final moments of one of music's greatest icons - his passion, urgency, and soul laid bare for all to hear. Paired with the fire of his renowned Symphony No. 40, this program beautifully demonstrates Mozart's genius at his most human, most profound and most enigmatic. I can't wait to perform it." Mozart’s Requiem is one of the most iconic classical compositions ever, with the "Lacrimosa" movement standing out as one of classical music's most popular movements. Together, Requiem and "Lacrimosa" have approximately one billion views on YouTube and on Spotify, "Lacrimosa" alone has garnered over 91 million streams. The work’s profound emotional depth has led to its inclusion in various films and adaptations by contemporary artists, including Come and See (1985), The Big Lebowski (1998), Eyes Wide Shut (1999), and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021). Enveloped in intrigue, the 1791 piece was left unfinished at Mozart’s untimely death, sparking rumors and legends about its creation and completion. Characterized by its sorrowful yet transcendent melodies, powerful choral passages, and orchestral depth, the haunting beauty and emotional intensity of Mozart’s Requiem Mass, coupled with the enigma of its origins, have captivated listeners for centuries, solidifying its place as a masterwork that transcends time and continues to inspire both reverence and curiosity. His ever-popular Symphony No. 40 in G minor cements Mozart’s place as one of music’s greatest innovators. Daring, evocative, and dripping with emotion, it beautifully exemplifies his prodigious status. - Big Hearts, Little Paws - Meet Big Mac And Marvelous Monroe, Two Pets Ready To Seal Yours | sun-times
Big Hearts, Little Paws - Meet Big Mac And Marvelous Monroe, Two Pets Ready To Seal Yours South Florida Sun Times Jun 26, 2025 If You’ve Been Searching For A Furry Friend To Add Joy, Laughter, And Unconditional Love To Your Home, The Humane Society Of Broward County Has Two Irresistible Candidates Waiting To Meet You. Whether You’re Looking For A Spirited Sidekick To Keep You On Your Toes Or A Pint-Sized Cuddle Bug Who’s Content To Nap On Your Lap, Big Mac And Marvelous Monroe May Be The Perfect Match For Your Family. Big Personality in a Fun-Sized Package Let’s start with Big Mac (ID 700043), a 27-pound bundle of joy wrapped in wiry fur and boundless energy. With his scruffy coat and lively eyes, Big Mac might be part Cairn terrier or perhaps schnauzer — but what really defines him is his big personality. Despite his compact frame, this little guy makes a mighty impression. Big Mac arrived at the Humane Society of Broward County after being transferred from another shelter. His background remains a mystery, but his journey has clearly molded him into a resilient, charming pup with an eagerness to love and be loved. Like many rescue animals, Big Mac was a little wary at first. Who wouldn’t be, landing in an unfamiliar place surrounded by strangers? But as he settled in, Big Mac began to shine. The staff has seen him go from nervous newcomer to social butterfly in just a few weeks. Big Mac adores attention, thrives on interaction, and would be a wonderful companion for an active family with older children or adults looking for a cheerful walking buddy. He’s the kind of dog that makes you laugh every day, whether he's proudly carrying around a plush toy twice his size or flopping on his back for belly rubs. A Tiny Gem with a Heart of Gold On the other end of the size spectrum is Marvelous Monroe (ID 697889), a delicate little kitten who’s already living up to her name. At just 11 weeks old and a mere two pounds, Monroe is still in the early stages of life, but she’s already mastered the fine art of stealing hearts. Monroe’s start was a bit uncertain. When she first arrived at the shelter, she was too small to be adopted, so she was placed in a volunteer foster home where she received around-the-clock care, love, and attention. It’s clear that this early nurturing made a big impact — Monroe is sweet, gentle, and enjoys being held. She’s a cuddler through and through, the type of kitten who wants nothing more than to nap on your chest or curl up beside you at bedtime. Despite her tiny size, Monroe is full of curiosity. She’s playful in that delightful kitten way — batting at feathers, chasing string toys, and tumbling around like she owns the world. But her greatest joy is simply being close to her human. Monroe would thrive in a calm, loving environment where she can continue to grow and explore safely. Whether you’re an experienced cat parent or a first-time adopter, this little lady is ready to make herself at home — preferably yours. Adopt, Don’t Shop The Humane Society of Broward County, located at 2070 Griffin Road in Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312, is open daily at 11:00 a.m. and offers a welcoming environment for anyone looking to adopt. If Big Mac or Marvelous Monroe seems like the right addition to your family, you’re encouraged to fill out a pre-adoption application online at: www.humanebroward.com before visiting in person. Every pet adopted from the shelter is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before going home — setting both the animal and adopter up for success. In addition to adoptions, the shelter provides a walk-in vaccine clinic six days a week, offering essential preventative care like rabies shots, microchipping, and flea and tick treatments. No appointment is necessary, and services are priced affordably to help all pet owners provide for their animals. Changing a Life — Theirs and Yours Every pet has a story, and while Big Mac and Monroe’s early chapters may be unknown or filled with uncertainty, the rest of their stories could be full of love, laughter, and companionship — with you. Rescuing a pet doesn’t just change their life; it transforms yours as well. There’s a unique joy in watching a once-timid animal blossom in your care. From Big Mac’s goofy zoomies across your backyard to Monroe’s soft purring as she dozes beside you, these little creatures offer big love. So, if you have room in your heart and home, come meet these two wonderful animals. Whether you're looking for a dog with a spark of mischief or a kitten with a heart full of warmth, you might just find your perfect match waiting behind the doors of the Humane Society of Broward County. And who knows? Maybe Big Mac or Marvelous Monroe is the companion you didn’t know you needed — until now.
