Let's Learn from COVID: Prepare For Future Pandemics Now By Candace DeMatteis, JD MPH April 21, 2022 Share One COVID-19 lesson is already clear: The time to invest in preparedness for the next pandemic is now. A major focus of our preparedness effort must be combating the foes we know -- namely drug-resistant superbugs. Without swift action to address this public health threat, I fear we'll be facing the next deadly pandemic sooner rather than later. Like COVID-19, antimicrobial resistance -- which occurs when strains of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other pathogens develop resistance to the medications used to treat them -- is a global crisis. The World Health Organization has named AMR a top global public health threat facing humanity. Each year, nearly 3 million Americans contract a drug-resistant infection. By conservative estimates, 35,000 of them die. Yet some experts believe the actual toll is much higher -- approaching 162,000 annual deaths in the United States. Antibiotics provide a safety net for infections caused by these superbugs -- and all types of injuries, illnesses, and medical interventions. Our ability to prevent and cure infections is foundational to our safety and health. But any time we use an antibiotic, the threat of resistance grows. That means we must use antibiotics only when needed -- and develop more of them. Without new antibiotics, the risk of dying from infection after routine medical procedures becomes dangerously higher. About 10% of people, including several of my family members, report having allergies to some first-line antibiotics. That makes the need for additional and better options even more important. For example, diabetes, also common in my family, raises risks of all sorts of infections -- foot, kidney, and bladder -- and the seriousness of them. We worry about running out of options for otherwise routine ear, bladder, or strep infections. So should you. People undergoing common dental care to dialysis to chemotherapy all face infection risks and need antibiotics to cure them. But protecting against widespread antimicrobial resistance won't be possible without government support. U.S. biotech firms have the know-how to develop new antibiotics, but the antibiotic market is broken. To prevent or slow resistance, new antibiotics are used rarely -- held in reserve for serious infections. As a result, many firms that have invested hundreds of millions and spent years pursuing novel antibiotics end up declaring bankruptcy because sales of their drug are too small. Policymakers are aware of this problem, but progress is slow and antibiotic development takes time. A bipartisan bill in Congress called the PASTEUR Act would fix these market barriers and encourage much-needed development. Under a "Netflix-like" subscription system, the federal government would pay participating research companies a flat fee in exchange for guaranteed access to a stream of new, innovative antibiotics and antifungals. We've seen the devastating costs of not being prepared. We're closing in on a million lives lost from Covid-19 and economic damages approaching $16 trillion for businesses and families across the nation. Our policymakers need to act now so we are better prepared for the next public health crisis. Making sure we can kill superbugs should be at the center of preparedness efforts. Say Cheese - Shavuot Holiday 101 By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil May 21, 2026 At A Unique Crossroads Between Religion And Cuisine, The Holiday Of Shavuot, Celebrating The Giving Of The Torah At Mount Sinai Some 3,338 Years Ago, Has Become A Celebration Of Fine Dairy Cuisine As Well. Shavuot Is Celebrated For Two Days, This Year Beginning At Sundown On Thursday, May 21st, 2026 And Ending At Nightfall On Saturday, May 23rd, 2026. 50 days after leaving Egypt on Passover, the Jewish people received the Torah from G-d at Mount Sinai on the holiday of Shavuot. Shavuot literally means “weeks” and marks the completion of the seven-week counting period between Passover and Shavuot. Shavuot customs include all-night Torah study, listening to the recitation of the Ten Commandments, the reading of the Book of Ruth, eating dairy products and adorning the home with flowers. With the giving of the Torah, the Jews became obligated to observe the Kosher laws. As the Torah was given on Shabbat, no cattle or poultry could be slaughtered, nor could we make sure that the animal's insides were healthy and then properly cleaned out as is required in order for the meat to be Kosher. In addition, utensils could not be Koshered, and as such we ate dairy. Exquisite cheesecakes, pesto pastas, lasagna, souffles, eggplant parmesan and of course, cheese blintzes all take center stage during this ancient celebration. When thinking Jewish Holidays, Passover, Chanukah and Yom Kippur usually come to mind first. Nevertheless, Shavuot is considered one of Judaism's main holidays and was in fact a “pilgrimage” when all of Israel would travel to Jerusalem to celebrate in the Temple in Jerusalem. No, it isn't all about the food. Especially in lieu of what's been happening around the world with all the antisemetic rhetoric, what is important is that the community is joining together, hearing the Ten Commandments and celebrating the Torah. But the good food certainly helps. The tradition to learn all night has been practiced ever since we received the Torah. On the very night before G-d gave the Torah, we went to sleep, waking late in the morning. As a symbolic rectification for this, Jews customarily stay awake studying Torah until the morning, on the first night of Shavuot, this year on Thursday night. Since we all stood at Mount Sinai, we must all reaffirm our commitment. On Friday, May 22nd, 2026 the Ten Commandments will be read aloud from the Torah. Special emphasis is placed on including the entire Jewish family, including little babies, the way the Torah’s giving was attended by every Jewish man, woman and child. The word Torah means “instruction” or “guide.” The Torah guides our every step and move through its 613 Mitzvahs. The word Mitzvah means both “commandment” and “connection.” Through the study of Torah and fulfillment of Mitzvahs, we reconnect ourselves and our environment to G‑d. G‑d’s purpose in creating the world was that all of creation be sanctified, imbuing it with holiness and spirituality. Since Shavuot is also called the “Harvest Festival,” it is customary to adorn the home with fruits, flowers and greens. Most of us are, thank G-d, able to get out and celebrate the way we have for over three thousand years. But for those that are for whatever reason staying home, that should in no way stop you from celebrating the holiday, since most of the holiday is super easy to celebrate even while at home alone. Not going to work • Eating dairy • Praying the special holiday prayers • Studying Torah all night • Decorating the home with flowers • The only things that we can't do without a quorum, are hearing the Ten Commandments read from the Torah and praying with a minyan. But you can still study the Ten Commandments from a Torah Book, known as a Chumash (which you can download before the holiday at: www.ChabadChayil.org/Chumash) and pray from a Siddur prayer book (downloadable at: www.ChabadChayil.org/Siddur). FPL Shares Tips To Avoid Utility Scams As Florida Leads Nation In Fraud South Florida Sun Times Mar 4, 2026 For The Second Year In A Row, Florida Leads The Nation In Fraud Reports, With More Than 1,200 Scams Per 100,000 Residents, According To The Federal Trade Commission (FTC). During National Consumer Protection Week From Sunday, March 1st, 2026 - Saturday, March 7th, 2026, Florida Power And Light Company (FPL) Is Warning Customers About Utility Scams And Sharing Steps To Help Keep Customers From Being Targeted. Imposter scams are the most frequently reported type of fraud in Florida, according to FTC data, with nearly 50,000 cases of imposter scams between January and September 2025. What are utility imposter scams? Utility imposter scams occur when scammers impersonate trusted companies and demand payment from customers. Scammers are using increasingly sophisticated tactics, including: • Manipulating internet search results to display fake websites or phone numbers. • Posing as utility representatives seeking sensitive personal or financial information from customers who call these numbers unknowingly. • Targeting customers by phone, text, email or even door-to-door, falsely claiming to be an FPL employee. How can FPL customers protect themselves from utility scams? FPL urges customers to stay alert and follow these tips to avoid scams: • Contact FPL directly. Call the number on your bill. Or call: 1 (800) 697-5223 instead of searching online where scammers' numbers may appear. • Don’t rely on caller ID. Scammers can manipulate the name to appear to be FPL. • Be cautious of urgent or odd payment requests. FPL will never demand immediate payment, ask customers to pay through Zelle or gift card, or threaten immediate disconnection. • Trust your instincts. If something feels off, hang up and contact FPL directly. • Delete suspicious texts or emails asking for payment. • Verify representatives at your door. Shut the door and call the police if a visitor without FPL identification tries to collect payment or aggressively sell products. • Spread scam awareness. Talk to loved ones about common scam tactics to keep them from becoming victims. What should customers do if they suspect a scam? Customers who suspect they have been targeted by a scam should immediately report it to FPL and local law enforcement. In case of phone or digital scams, customers should also file a complaint with both the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Florida’s state consumer protection agency. How is FPL mitigating scam activity?
