What Is An IRA? Everything You Need To Know By Miguel Rivera, Bank of America February 20, 2025 Share If you’re an employee thinking about how you can save for retirement, individual retirement accounts, better known as IRAs, are worth considering. Almost anyone with earned income can open an IRA, which makes it different from a 401K, which you can only participate in if your employer offers one. There are several different types of IRAs, each with its own requirements and features, but all offer important tax advantages that could help you save more for your future. The most popular kinds of IRA’s are traditional IRA’s and Roth IRA’s. The combined maximum yearly contribution to both accounts is $7,000 for 2024—or $8,000 if you will be age 50 or older at any time during the calendar year. Here’s what you need to know to help you choose an IRA.1 What are traditional IRA’s? Traditional IRAs provide tax-deferred growth. This means your money grows tax-free until you begin taking distributions, at which point your withdrawals are taxed at your income tax rate.2 What’s more, contributions may be tax-deductible. For instance, if you make $40,000 per year and put $3,000 in a traditional IRA, you will generally receive a deduction against your $40,000 of income. For 2024, if you are covered by a workplace retirement plan, your contributions are at least partially tax-deductible if your modified adjusted gross income is less than $87,000 if you are single or $143,000 if you are married and filing jointly. The income limits are higher if your spouse is covered by a workplace retirement plan but you are not. However, if neither you nor your spouse are covered by a workplace retirement plan, your contributions are tax-deductible no matter what your income is. A traditional IRA can be useful for those who don’t qualify for a Roth IRA (see next section), for those who anticipate being in a lower tax bracket after retirement and for those who want to save outside their 401K. It makes sense to invest enough in your 401K to get the full matching contribution from your employer, if they offer one. Beyond that, IRAs may offer more investment flexibility than many 401K’s, though you should learn the details of your 401K to be sure. Anyone with earned income3 is eligible to open a traditional IRA. If you withdraw funds from your traditional IRA before age 59½, however, you generally have to pay income tax on any tax-deductible contributions and earnings, and an additional 10 percent tax on your withdrawal—though some exceptions may apply. What are Roth IRA’s? Roth IRAs are attractive accounts for those who can afford to pay taxes now for the reward of federally tax-free income later (state taxes may apply). Since contributions to Roth IRA’s aren’t tax-deductible, you pay more in income taxes up front than you would with a tax-deductible contribution to a traditional IRA. The trade-off is when you withdraw your contributions, you get to take home the full amount federal tax-free (as long as at least five years have passed since your first Roth IRA contribution and you’re older than 59½ or you meet another exception). In addition, unlike tax-deductible contributions to traditional IRA’s, contributions to a Roth IRA can be withdrawn at any time, tax-free (including the 10% early withdrawal tax), although taxes (including the 10% early withdrawal tax) may apply to the portion of the withdrawal representing earnings. One other feature that sets the Roth IRA apart from the traditional IRA: There are no required minimum distributions while the Roth IRA owner is still alive. However, to contribute for 2024, you must have earned income, and single tax filers must make less than $161,000 per year, while joint tax filers must make less than $240,000 per year. The IRS adjusts these limits annually. You may contribute to both a traditional and a Roth IRA, though there is an annual contribution limit—for 2024, the maximum combined limit across both accounts is $7,000 (or $8,000 if you will be age 50 or older at any time during the calendar year). What are IRA’s for the self-employed? A simplified employee pension (SEP) IRA can be a good option for those who are self-employed. SEP IRA’s allow you to set aside up to the lesser of (a) 25% of compensation (as determined under the SEP IRA rules),4 or (b) $69,000 through 2024. SEP IRA’s work like traditional IRA’s, which means you don’t pay taxes on your contributions and earnings until you withdraw them in retirement. There is no Roth option for SEP IRA’s. What are savings IRA’s vs. investment IRA’s? Once you determine your account type, you may be able to choose between an investment IRA and a savings IRA. Think about your retirement goals, your financial health and your life stage to help you determine which kind of IRA would be better for you. Savings IRA’s are offered by banks and feature FDIC-insured CDs and money market savings accounts. These are lower-risk accounts that offer the potential for relatively stable, modest yearly returns, often without any annual or custodial fees. Investment IRAs are offered by investment firms and may allow you to invest in stocks, bonds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and mutual funds. These accounts may make sense for those who are willing to accept some risk in their retirement accounts in exchange for the potential for greater long-term growth. Investment IRAs are not FDIC-insured, are not bank guaranteed and have the potential to lose value. No matter which kind of IRA you choose, saving or investing for retirement should be at the top of your list of financial priorities. With retirements lasting longer than they used to, the sooner you start preparing, the better off you could be. 1. This article addresses U.S. federal tax consequences. State and local taxes may also apply. Consult your tax advisor. 2. Withdrawals in excess of non-deductible contributions are taxed. Withdrawals before age 59-1/2 may be subject to a 10% additional tax unless an exception applies. 3. A spouse can also contribute to a traditional IRA on behalf of a spouse who has no earned income, provided the contributing spouse has enough earned income to cover the contributions. 4. Taxpayers typically have until their individual federal tax return filing deadline to make an IRA contribution for the prior tax year. If the taxpayer has filed an extension, then the taxpayer has until the extension deadline, which is usually October 15, to make a SEP IRA contribution. 5. This article does not address SARSEPs (or salary reduction SEPs) or SIMPLE IRA’s which can also be used by those who are self-employed if certain requirements are met. 6. The maximum compensation that can be taken into account for purposes of this calculation is $345,000 in 2024. 7. Tax-free withdrawals (i.e., qualified distributions) are generally allowed if you're 59 1/2, disabled or deceased, and five years have passed since your first contribution to any Roth IRA. 8. Effective 1/1/2023, the required beginning date is April 1 of the year after you turn age 73. You are required to take an RMD by December 31st each year after that. If you delay your first RMD until April 1 in the year after you turn 73, you will be required to take two RMD’s in that year. You may be subject to additional taxes if RMD’s are missed. Please see your tax advisor regarding your specific situation. 9. Starting in 2024, you may be able to pull up to $1,000 from a Retirement Account, without owing the 10 percent penalty, for “unforeseeable or immediate” needs arising from a personal or family emergency. Through New Eyes January 5, 2022 Share Local Artist Has An Exhibition at FLL Broward County's Fort Lauderdale - Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in partnership with the Broward Cultural Division is proud to announce the Terminal 2 Art Gallery inaugural exhibition titled "Through New Eyes" by local artist Nava Lundy. Lundy is a nationally recognized artist best known for her series of large-scale paintings of Muses, which are Greek goddesses of poetic inspiration, featuring strong, intriguing and captivating women, and more recently for her hyper-colored paintings of animals. Located post-security, the Terminal 2 Art Gallery displays a series of animal paintings in the north area and a series of paintings inspired by Muses in the south gate area. The artwork, created exclusively for this exhibit, is layered with nuanced color and texture. Additionally, a three-dimensional element gives it a sense of tactile energy. "Lundy's exhibition brings a sense of joy and excitement to the space with its bright colors and themes that are accessible to all age groups," said Phil Dunlap, Director of Broward Cultural Division. A Broward County resident, wife and mother of three, Lundy paints out of her home studio in Parkland, FL. She received national recognition when immediately following the Parkland mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, she tried to comfort her 17 grieving neighbors by painting and donating portraits of their loved ones. Since 2009, FLL has dedicated space in Terminal 2 to showcase and promote the work of local artists. To date, almost 20 artists have had one-person shows. The Terminal 2 Art Gallery, completed in December, will rotate exhibitions every six months, and artists from Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties are eligible to participate. "Through New Eyes" is a collaborative exhibition presented by FLL and the Cultural Division's Public Art & Design program. Her Inspiration Discovering and creating beauty that goes beyond the superficial and makes you pause is what I set out to do in each and every one of my paintings. I try to listen to my paintings and see what they need. The worst thing for me is being formulaic. It is all about the journey the painting takes you on. About Nava Lundy Nava Lundy was born in New Jersey and raised in South Florida. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Nava has been a professional artist since 1998, and has been painting almost her entire life. She currently resides in South Florida with her husband and three children. Her exploits as an artist have been featured in local and national news. The World May Be A Jungle. But We’re Celebrating Purim March 22, 2024 Share This Purim, Jews around the world will celebrate the holiday commemorating the salvation of the Jewish People in Ancient Persia, with extra meaning. The festival which is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew Month of Adar, begins this year after nightfall on Saturday, March 23rd and goes until nightfall on Sunday, March 24th. It’s one of the most joyous days on the Jewish calendar, celebrating the overturning of a royal decree which called for the extermination of all Jews throughout the Persian Empire in 356 B.C.E. This year, Purim holds heightened significance as Jews experience one of the most difficult times in recent history. The enduring trauma of the Simchas Torah attacks on October 7th, the war in Israel, the perilous fate of the 100+ hostages in Hamas captivity, and the distressing rise of Antisemitism across the globe place a new understanding of the Genocidal Intent of the Purim story’s villain Haman, who sought to enact the elimination of the Jewish People. It also brings hope of the Jewish People overcoming the present challenges and a brighter future, as in the story of Purim, when the table was turned with miracles from the Almighty, the Jews were victorious over their enemies. The relevance and message of the festival of Purim has never been more acute than today. That is, when faced with those who wish evil upon us, the response of the Jewish People is to strengthen our trust in G-d and turn to joy as a way of combating darkness. In 1971, the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, called upon people in Israel to assist the soldiers of the IDF to fulfill the observances of Purim. The Purim Awareness Campaign has since expanded to reach all Jews, and today impacts people at hospitals, nursing homes, children at school and of course regular folks in the streets. The Jewish People are going through a very difficult time, but Purim reminds us that ultimately, through coming closer to G-d and our heritage, G-d will guide us through this time as he did for our ancestors, and this is why, despite all the evil, we will celebrate, as we have done countless times throughout our history. Although the general theme of Purim is all about Joy, the four specific Mitzvahs associated with this holiday are: 1) Giving gifts of money to at least two poor people. 2) Sending food gifts, made up of at least two types of foods, to at least one friend. 3) Enjoy a festive Purim meal, preferably with friends. And 4) Recounting the story of the Purim miracle, by reading the Megilla, also known as the Scroll of Esther. When we take the focus off of ourselves, and instead see how we can help others, by giving charity and giving gifts of food. When our focus is shifted from celebrating in silence, to having a meal with others. When we remember the miracles that occurred, not just to our ancestors many years ago, but also to us, over and over again.. It really forces us to bring out our inner joy, and slowly transform it into a pure joy! I encourage you to contact your local Chabad or Synagogue to see what they’re doing to celebrate. A Beautifully Baked Beef Dinner www.Culinary.net April 6, 2023 Share Many families crave savory and delicious weeknight meals. After a long day of work and school, it’s time to gather around the table to share a mouthwatering meal and memories together. For something truly wholesome, try this Beef Tenderloin with Roasted Cauliflower and Spinach Salad. It’s a full meal the whole family can enjoy, and you’ll be surprised at how easy it makes it to feed all the smiling faces. This meal has layers of flavor and sneaks in a few vegetables like spinach and cauliflower, but even picky eaters can’t resist trying it. Start with a Beef Tenderloin and drizzle it generously with olive oil. Add 2 tablespoons of pepper. Flip and repeat on the other side. Bake for 12 minutes at 475 F. Next, add one head of cauliflower to a mixing bowl with five shallots cut into quarters. Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil; mix well with salt and pepper, to taste. Add this to the baking sheet with the Beef Tenderloin and bake 18-25 minutes. While that’s cooking, add 3 tablespoons of olive oil to a mixing bowl with lemon juice, Dijon mustard, salt, pepper and baby spinach. To plate, add baby spinach salad first then the cauliflower and shallot mixture and, finally, that juicy, perfectly cooked Beef Tenderloin. Garnish with cranberries for a splash of color. This meal is satisfying and only requires some mixing bowls and a large sheet pan to make cleanup a breeze so you can focus on what really matters most: time with your loved ones. Place beef on baking sheet. Rub 4 tablespoons olive oil and 2 teaspoons pepper into beef. Bake 12 minutes. In large bowl, toss cauliflower, shallots, 1 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon pepper to combine. Scatter vegetables around beef and bake 18-25 minutes, or until desired doneness is reached. Allow meat to rest 15 minutes covered in aluminum foil. In medium bowl, whisk 3 tablespoons olive oil, lemon juice, mustard and remaining salt and pepper until combined. Add spinach; stir until combined. Update On Hallandale Beach Issues: First In Person Town Hall Held at Foster Park In Almost Three Years By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper April 21, 2022 Share I want to thank all of the residents that came out to my first In-Person Town Hall held at Foster Park. It was great to see all of you in person to give updates on our City issues and listen to your concerns. It has been difficult over the past few years not being able to meet in person. I’m sure that we all missed the personal interactions and debates that we have together Live and In-Person. Many residents asked me about Foster Park and what is going to be done with the facility. Months ago, our Staff issued a Request For Proposals “RFP” for interested individuals or entities to provide programming at the park. I am not at liberty to discuss the “RFP” as it is a code of silence. I encouraged the attendees to go on our Web-site for all the information. Commissioner Beam Furr joined us for the meeting and updated us on housing issues. The Tuesday before, Broward County had a discussion on how they can legally address the housing crisis. Collectively, we all agreed that this is one of the most pressing issues facing South Florida. They are having the County Attorney look into whether or not they have the ability to implement Rent Caps. In light of this issue, I invited Ralph Stone from Broward County Housing and Finance. He shared that they were at a 55% spike on Rental Costs. Broward County was at the top in the Nation. There are many factors that impact Housing Costs. The main one is inventory. Basically, supply and demand have exacerbated our area. Many people have decided to move to South Florida due to The COVID-19 Pandemic and changes in the workplace. It has become a seller’s market. Homes and apartments once on the market, are selling for asking or even interested parties go into bidding wars. The other issue Hallandale Beach is seeing are large investors going in and buying up apartment buildings. Residents are given notice that the building was sold and then they have limited time to move out. Once purchased, the rents are doubling. For many residents, they have been spending upwards of $1,000 a month for a 1 Bedroom. The cost has now risen to a range of $1,800 - $2,300, which is having a crippling effect on many lower income residents and even harder for those on fixed incomes. Mr. Stone explained that when they provide affordable housing dollars, the units are capped due to agreements to maintain properties as affordable. Our City uses the same practice. They have actually joined with our CRA in certain projects. The most recent is Solaris near Bluesten Park. His division also provides homeowner assistance for down payments, home maintenance and they also have Relief Funds that they are implementing for non-entitlement cities with populations under 50,000. In addition to Commissioner Furr and Mr. Stone, I invited Interim Chief Michel Michel to update our residents on our Police Department. Chief Michel has been actually serving our community for over 18 years and has been Interim Chief for 6 months. Over the past months, he has implemented many projects that have sadly been sitting and collecting dust. He briefed us on the new Shot Spotter Technology. This new system allows our Department to know in real time when a shot is actually fired. Currently, the System covers West of Federal Highway, with the goal of expanding the System to include the entire City. The technology has already assisted in crime fighting. Another program is our License Plate Readers. LPRs do just that. They read plates and send the information automatically to be researched. Stolen vehicles or vehicles tied to a crime, trigger an alert directly to our Patrols. Recently, our Department apprehended a stolen car and one criminal, the other individual had fled. In addition to our technology, there has been a strong push for training. The residents were very happy that we are focusing on de-escalation training. I am also as happy as the residents that we are finally filling Police Department Position Vacancies. At one point, we were down over 22 Positions. We still have some Vacancies, but the Chief hopes to have them filled soon. I do need to note that we do lose officers from retirement and there are simply those that want to transfer to other Departments, which is typical in all Police Departments. Residents shared their desire to be involved with the Chief’s hiring process. I explained that the City Manager is responsible for hiring and firing. The Chief has not established whether he may be going out for a search. I did tell the attendees that I will share their comments. The main point that I heard was that the residents are concerned about hiring someone from outside our agency because that individual will not know our City and more importantly, will not know our residents either. The Chief was modest in his sharing how much he has turned the Department around. I personally believe he is doing an amazing job! It shows in the morale of the Department which is extremely important. In my opinion, we want well trained high caliber Police Officers. More importantly, the Officers need to know that the Chief has their backs, however, he is also willing to make tough decisions. 'Tis The Season For Aventura's First-Ever Winter Wonderland Celebration By Joyce R. Forchion - LOVE Aventura December 12, 2022 Share The holidays are in full effect as the City of Aventura kicked off the season with a rare appearance of SNOW! A simulated snow flurry captivated hundreds of ecstatic parents and children attending Aventura’s inaugural Winter Wonderland ceremony, which made its cheerfully “chill”-y debut on December 6 along the breezeway of Government Center. The family-friendly festivities, which were organized by the City’s Community Services and Public Works Departments, offered Nutcracker-inspired stage performances from tiny ballerinas, along with contemporary dance and vocal presentations from students representing the Aventura City of Excellence School, and participating community groups. Passersby usually recognize Aventura Government Center for its illuminated “Season’s Greetings” sign lining the landscape of the building, along with its gleaming display of palm trees that glisten in white and blue, the City’s traditional colors. Finally, we have an event that’s unique to our City where locals can immerse themselves in the sentiments of this time of year. Amid street construction, new businesses that are relocating to the city, and the annual December traffic jams on Biscayne Boulevard, residents considered the Winter Wonderland event to be a much-needed escape and reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the work week, and a pleasant transition into Christmas and Hanukkah, which were both symbolized with a community countdown to the first-ever lighting of the Christmas Tree and Menorah, both prominently displayed side-by-side for all to see. While a life-sized gingerbread man and dreidel duo happily posed for pictures throughout the night, kids were having the time of their lives capturing their fun times in the revolving holiday-themed photo booth and jumping for joy in the snow globe bounce house. Parents took advantage of the complimentary cookies, candy and treats offered for their children’s enjoyment and marveled at the special surprise of snow, which marked the first time many of them– along with their little ones– have witnessed such elements as sun-loving South Floridians. Aventura has evolved beyond the City with the enormous mall where we shop, dine, and unwind. Thanks to the long-term vision of the City’s leaders, staff, and volunteers, Aventura now serves as a prototype for municipalities seeking to create wholesome family experiences and promote community engagement, consisting of intergenerational activities uniting the entire family and touching each generation in a significant way.
