Run Away For Some Fun at The Cultural Center: Aventura Hosts “The New Mr. Vegas,” An Amazing Circus Show & “A Musical Love Letter”

January 31, 2024

The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, which opened in 2010, is an elegant facility, whose mission is: To enhance the quality of life for Aventura by providing a variety of performing arts and relevant cultural programming for audiences of all ages. This month that mission continues to hold true with comedy, wonder and song to hit the stage with George Wallace on February 9, The Great DuBois on February 10 and Sincerely, Sondheim February 4.

Aventura Presents George Wallace
The City of Aventura presents George Wallace in the Aventura Stand Up Comedy Series on Friday, February 9 at 8 p.m. Singer Marieann Meringolow will open the show.

Finding humor everywhere he turns, Wallace derives his comedy from the everyday and shares moments of life delivered with a lightning-quick wit.

Since beginning his career as a writer for The Redd Foxx Show, Wallace has been selling out comedy clubs and concert venues all over the world. He headlined his own show at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas for 10 years, which earned him the nickname, “The New Mr. Vegas.”

Wallace was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2013 Soul Train/Centric Comedy All-Star Awards and won Best Stand-Up Comedian at the prestigious American Comedy Awards after four consecutive nominations. As a veteran radio personality, he has also made appearances on The Steve Harvey Morning Show and was a charter member of The Tom Joyner Morning Show.

Showbiz Weekly proclaimed, “This uncommonly shrewd comedian is known as the guy who can roll the room over if it's dead." This event may contain adult language or content.

The 2024 Aventura Stand Up Comedy Series continues with Elon Gold joined by Stefanie Yunger and Eli Leonard on February 28 and Funny Women of a Certain Age on March 22.

The Great DuBois: Amazing Circus Show
The City of Aventura presents The Great DuBois: Amazing Circus Show, possibly the world’s most unique two-person circus, on Saturday, February 10 at 2 and 7 p.m.

The award-winning combination of Michael DuBois and Viktoria Grimmy, who have five generations of circus performers between them, deliver this fast-paced, high-energy circus show for all ages showcasing incredible feats of juggling, hula hoops, unicycle, aerial, circus stunts, contortion, magic and audience interaction all wrapped up in a blanket of comedy.

Describing the show as “highly entertaining and wonderful for the whole family,” BroadwayWorld reported, “The Great DuBois is not a typical theatrical production, but instead an excellent demonstration of how the circus arts can be used to create a fun family-friendly stage event. Along with his wife, Viktoria Grimmy, Michael DuBois tickles the audience with laughter, love, and creative stunts.”

The duo has been featured in the hit movie The Greatest Showman and have also been seen in the Tony Award-winning Pippin on Broadway, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman, Britney Spears' World Circus Tour and the movie Burlesque. They have also performed with New York City’s Big Apple Circus and the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® show.

“Somethin's Comin', Somethin' Good”
The City of Aventura presents Sincerely, Sondheim: A Musical Love Letter to Stephen Sondheim on Sunday, February 4 at 7 p.m. featuring Nicholas Rodriguez, direct from his performance in the Tony Award-winning revival of Sondheim’s Company.

The evening celebrates the lyrical and musical genius of the late composer of Company, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods and many more who also wrote lyrics to such classics as Gypsy and West Side Story. In addition to singing selections from Sondheim’s shows, Rodriguez pulls from the thousands of handwritten letters to fans and colleagues to use Sondheim's own words to explore the composer’s fascinating relationships with legends such as Oscar Hammerstein II, Jerry Herman, Jonathan Larson, Lin-Manuel Miranda and, of course, his own personal story.

Rodriguez made his Broadway debut in Disney’s production of Tarzan and has traveled the world on tours of Jesus Christ Superstar (Jesus), Evita (Che), Hair (Claude) and, most recently, The Sound of Music (Captain Georg Von Trapp). He has performed at Radio City Music Hall, 54 Below, Feinstein’s and the Metropolitan Room in New York City while his solo shows have enjoyed sold out runs at Birdland, Orlando Cabaret Festival, The MUNY, Signature Theatre, ZACH Theatre and many others. He recently released his debut album based on his one-man show of the same name, The First Time.

Rodriguez is perhaps best known for portraying Nick Chavez on ABC’s One Life to Live for which he received the GLAAD Media Award and the 2009 Visibility Award. On the big screen, he was seen in Sex and the City 2 and is also featured on the film’s soundtrack.
