South Florida Sun Times

As The South Florida Sun Begins Its Slow Descent, Casting Golden Reflections Across Tranquil Lakes And Winding Garden Paths, An Evening At The Morikami Museum And Japanese Gardens Transforms Into Something Quietly Magical. On Thursday, April 23rd, 2026 From 5:30 p.m. To 8:00 p.m., Guests Are Invited To Experience That Magic Firsthand During The Beloved Sunset Stroll—An Immersive Cultural Event That Blends Nature, Music, Folklore, And Cuisine Into A Serene Twilight Escape.

Located in Delray Beach, Morikami is already known as one of the most peaceful and visually stunning destinations in the region. But during Sunset Stroll, the gardens take on a new life. The fading daylight softens the landscape’s edges, lanterns begin to glow, and the atmosphere shifts into something more contemplative—yet vibrantly alive.

This April’s theme, “The Mysteries of Yokai,” invites guests into the fascinating world of Japanese folklore. Leading the exploration is Marcela Lopez Bravo, Director of the Asian Studies Graduate Program at Florida International University. Through engaging talks held in the museum’s theater, Lopez Bravo will unravel the origins and cultural significance of yokai—supernatural beings that range from mischievous spirits to eerie shape-shifters. Deeply embedded in Japanese storytelling traditions, these figures offer a window into how folklore reflects societal fears, humor, and imagination across centuries.

While the lectures provide intellectual intrigue, the rest of the evening is a sensory journey. On the terrace, the powerful rhythms of Fushu Daiko will echo through the gardens. Celebrating more than 35 years of performance, this premier taiko drumming group is known for its electrifying shows that combine precise choreography with thunderous beats. Their performances are both primal and celebratory—an exhilarating contrast to the otherwise tranquil surroundings.

Inside the Sakai Room, guests can experience a more delicate musical tradition with performances by Emiko Koto. The koto, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument, produces soft, flowing tones that seem to drift effortlessly through the air. The intimate setting allows listeners to fully appreciate the instrument’s nuanced beauty, offering a moment of calm reflection amid the evening’s varied programming.

Of course, no cultural event is complete without culinary delights, and Sunset Stroll delivers with a thoughtfully curated selection of Asian-inspired food and beverages. The on-site Cornell Cafe will offer light bites and refreshments, while guests can also sample premium sake from Niigata Sake. For heartier fare, Kaminari Ramen—recently named “Best Food Truck” in the 2026 Palm Beach Post Community Choice Awards—will serve up steaming bowls of ramen packed with rich flavors. Those with a sweet tooth won’t want to miss Akiko-ya Japanese Sweets, which showcase traditional treats that are as visually appealing as they are delicious.

What makes Sunset Stroll particularly special is its ability to appeal to a wide audience. Families, couples, and solo explorers alike can find something to enjoy, whether it’s learning about folklore, listening to live music, or simply wandering the gardens at dusk. Children are especially welcome, with free admission for members’ kids 17 and under and affordable pricing for general admission families. It’s an accessible way to introduce younger visitors to Japanese culture in an engaging and memorable setting.

The event is also designed with ease and comfort in mind. Rain or shine, the stroll continues, encouraging guests to embrace the gardens in all their moods—whether bathed in golden sunlight or shimmering under a gentle drizzle. However, those interested should plan ahead: tickets are limited and will not be sold at the door, adding an element of exclusivity to the experience.

Beyond April, the Sunset Stroll series continues throughout the year, with upcoming dates scheduled for Thursday, May 21st, 2026, Thursday, June 18th, 2026 and Thursday, September 17th, 2026. Each installment offers its own unique theme and programming, ensuring that no two visits are exactly alike. It’s this evolving nature that keeps the series fresh and continually draws both first-time visitors and returning guests.

Events like Sunset Stroll are made possible through community support, with sponsorship from organizations such as JM Family Enterprises and Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC. Their involvement underscores the importance of cultural programming in enriching the local community and preserving opportunities for cross-cultural understanding.

In a fast-paced world, evenings like this offer a rare chance to slow down. To walk beneath swaying trees, listen to ancient rhythms, and immerse oneself in stories that have traveled across oceans and generations—it’s an experience that lingers long after the sun has set.

For those seeking a blend of beauty, culture, and quiet wonder, the Sunset Stroll at Morikami is more than an event. It’s an invitation to step into another world, if only for a few hours, and leave with a renewed sense of curiosity and calm.
