The Aventura Annual International Film Series returns with EIGHT amazing and award winning films from Italy, France, Iran, Russia, Iceland and more. Film expert Shelly Isaacs, curates the series and hosts each film, with an introduction and a post-screening discussion.

All screenings are GENERAL ADMISSION and are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. The Lobby opens at 6:30 p.m. and the auditorium, opens for seating at 7:00 p.m. The final three films in the series, will be announced soon.

Your Host, Shelly Isaacs:
As well as your host and programmer for this annual series at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, Shelly is the Founder, Programmer and Host, for The Cafe Cinematheque and Senses of Cinema programs at many venues throughout South Florida, including, the Movies of Delray, Movies of Lake Worth and The Boca Museum of Art. He has enjoyed, a 30-plus year career, as a Creative Director/Writer, in advertising with an emphasis on Film, TV, Radio Advertising and Production. Isaacs holds an MA in Media Ecology Studies from New York University, where he served as an Adjunct Professor in Cultural Studies. Presently, he teaches Foreign-Language Film Appreciation, in the Life Long Learning Society at Florida Atlantic University and at Florida International University. In 2009, Isaacs launched Cinematheque at Sea, offering audiences who appreciate Foreign-Language Films, an opportunity to experience his program of specially-selected films, while on a luxury cruise. He is the film expert for Celebrity Cruise Lines, during their annual voyage to the Cannes International Film Festival, as well as, on other scheduled, film related cruises, throughout the world.

The Aventura International Film Series, begins a new season with Martin Eden, winner of the Best Actor Prize at the Venice Film Festival and the Platform Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival. Adapted from a Jack London novel, the film follows an Italian sailor, who rescues a nobleman and gains entry into a polite society, where he finds a world of books and an urge, to become a writer. Not rated, this film from Italy, is shown with English subtitles and is not suitable, for children under 12.

There is No Evil

Tickets: $12
After being banned from filmmaking for life and sentenced to jail, Iranian Director, Mohammad Rosoulof, returned with There is No Evil, the winner of more than a dozen awards at film festivals in the U.S. and abroad, including the Golden Bear Award for best film at the Berlin Film Festival. The film offers four tales, of those given death penalties by the state and those ordered to carry it out. According to Variety, "There Is No Evil,’ comes across as four films for the price of one, none of its segment’s anemic and each contributing fresh insights, to the paradoxes, of capital punishment, in Iran." Not rated, this film is in Farsi with English subtitles and is not suitable, for children under 12.

Woman At War

In Woman At War, Halla, is a popular choir director, when she is not disguised as a bow-and-arrow carrying, environmental vigilante, fighting to bring down power lines. She is also hoping to adopt a child, just as Halla’s identical twin sister, readies to leave for India, for two years. Variety notes of this winner of the SACD Screenwriting Award at the Cannes Film Festival, “Is there anything rarer, than an intelligent feel-good film, that knows how to tackle urgent global issues with humor, as well as, a satisfying sense of justice?” Not rated, this film is from Iceland with English subtitles and is not suitable, for children under 12.

Dear Comrades!

Named as one of the Top Five Foreign Films in 2021, by the National Board of Review in the U.S. and the winner of the, Special Jury Prize for director Andrey Konchalovskiy at the Venice Film Festival, Dear Comrades! has received more than two dozen nominations and awards, at prestigious film festivals, around the world. A devout party activist, has her world view shaken, when the communist government, brutally cracks down on a strike by rebellious workers and then, her daughter goes missing. Not rated, this film is presented in Russian with English subtitles and is not suitable, for children under 12.

Perfumes
Tuesday, February 1st, 2022 at 7:30 p.m.

Perfumes, travels a bumpy road to friendship of two polar opposites, when a demanding fragrance designer hires a chauffeur with too many points on his license and too few customers. Variety calls the film, "A feel-good tale of friendship with a fragrant and very French, backdrop." Not rated, this film is presented in French with English subtitles and is not suitable, for children under 12.

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts manages the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, a 14,864-square-foot, 330-seat waterfront complex, that hosts performing arts, cultural and educational programming, for all ages.

The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center has implemented a number of changes, to ensure an enjoyable experience. Health & safety guidelines have been developed in conjunction with its management company, The Broward Center For The Performing Arts and in collaboration with, The Cleveland Clinic, which have been informed, with the guidance of, Public Health Officials, including The Centers For Disease Control (CDC).
