In Sync - Niki Haris & Shelly Berg Live - A Night Of Synchronicity And Soul Presented By Gold Coast Jazz Society

South Florida Sun Times
Jan 1, 2026
When Niki Haris — The Radiant Spirit Of Soul — Meets Shelly Berg — The Maestro Of Motion — The Result Feels Nothing Short Of Inevitable. Some Collaborations Are Carefully Arranged; Others Appear As If Called Into Being, Sparked By An Unseen Rhythm, A Shared Pulse, A Glance Across A Piano And A Microphone. The Partnership Between Haris And Berg Belongs To The Latter. Their Music Is Effortless, Luminous, And Profoundly Alive. Don't Miss This Duo On Wednesday, January 14th, 2026 At Broward Center For The Performing Arts In Fort Lauderdale, Florida As Part Of The Gold Coast Jazz Society's Sizzling Season Series.
Haris, daughter of the legendary Gene Harris, was raised in a world where melody was as natural as breath and Gospel grounded her. Jazz expanded her reach. And her years performing alongside icons — from Madonna to Ray Charles — widened her artistic horizon. “I don’t think music should ever lose its joy,” she has said, and her voice proves it. Warm, vital, and generous, Haris sings with the emotion of soul, the storytelling of the blues, and the unbound freedom of jazz.
Berg meets her fire with a fluid brilliance of his own. A five-time Grammy® nominee, Steinway Artist, and Dean of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, Berg is known for playing with both wisdom and wonder. Bill Kohlhaase of the Los Angeles Times once described him as “a whirlwind of motion on the piano bench,” and yet beneath the movement lies depth, poise, and clarity. His mastery allows him to listen deeply — to shape the moment while letting others shine.
This spirit of musical interplay is precisely what the Gold Coast Jazz Society has championed throughout its history. Together, Haris and Berg embody that mission: creating music that is evolving, expressive, and alive in every measure. “The beauty of jazz,” Berg has said, “is what happens between the notes.” In those spaces, the duo finds connection — yielding performances that breathe, open and unguarded, moving through the room with ease. When the final note lingers, audiences don’t simply applaud; they exhale.
Joined by Chuck Bergeron on bass and Gary Novak on drums, the Shelly Berg Trio provides the steady roots beneath Haris’ radiant bloom. In their shared synergy, something takes hold — a seed planted in sound, unfolding long after the last note fades.
