He Was Born On May 5, 1976, In Livingston, New Jersey, Is One Of The Rare Jewish Head Coaches In Major College Football. Among The 136 Teams In The FBS, Jedd And Ryan Silverfield Of Memphis Are The Only Two Jewish Head Coaches, A Fact That Highlights Both His Personal Achievement And The Small But Meaningful Presence Of Jewish Leadership In The Sport. Jedd grew up in Livingston, where he did not play high school football but excelled in Tennis at Hanover Park High School, earning all‑State honors. His father, Jeffrey, who played Rennis in college, was a major influence. When I was covering the Maryland vs. Washington football game in October 2025, Jedd told me he still plays Tennis today. Jedd credits his parents, Jeffrey and Deby, as they both emphasized education and athletics. After his parents divorced, his mother remarried high school football coach Bill Rocca and being around that football program sparked Jedd’s interest in coaching while he was still in high school. Jedd added, “When I was a little kid I watched films all day long with Bill. It was cool being a ball boy for all the games when I was just eight years old and up. I really learned the love of the game.” Jedd also had a shout out for the University of Washington men’s and women’s Tennis teams for hitting balls with him at 7:00 a.m. as it helps him mentally to be on the court. He told his father of his dream and Jeffrey suggested he go to the best school possible to help him become a football coach. Jedd chose the University of Florida in Gainesville because he admired Coach Steve Spurrier and wanted to be in the best environment to learn how to coach. He volunteered on the Gators’ staff starting as a sophomore, roomed with future Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, and graduated from Florida in 1998. He immediately continued in coaching for the Gators while earning a Master’s Degree in Sports Management, reflecting his parents’ emphasis on education. By 2002, at just 26, Jedd moved to the National Football League (NFL) as a defensive quality control coach with the Houston Texans. Over the next few years he accumulated experience with several NFL franchises, including the Baltimore Ravens, Los Angeles Rams, and New England Patriots, while also holding college positions at Michigan and UCLA. In 2017 he served as interim head coach for UCLA and guided the Bruins to a bowl game. In 2018, Jedd was on the Rams’ staff for Super Bowl LIII, a game notable for the Patriots’ Jewish wide receiver Julian Edelman earning MVP honors. Jedd’s first major head‑coaching role came in 2021 at Arizona in Tucson, where he led the Wildcats for three seasons; his final season there saw Arizona nationally ranked and playing in a bowl. In 2024 he accepted the head coach position at the University of Washington in Seattle, stepping into the Big Ten’s elevated competition. In his first season with the Huskies, he led Washington to the Sun Bowl, and this season the Huskies are rolling again. Jedd engineered a second‑half comeback against Maryland - a bittersweet loss for me as a Terps alumnus, but one I quickly congratulated him on the field after the game. Washington’s Director of Football Operations, Deborah Goldstein, is also Jewish and hails from southern California. Deborah has been with UW football for 16 seasons and added, “This is my fifth head coach I have worked for at Washington, and it has been great,” In a post‑game conference I could see why his players love him as Jedd expresses such enthusiasm. I asked Jedd whether he had encountered anti‑Semitism in football; he answered, “no.” I left the game at College Park, Maryland very impressed by Jedd, Deborah and the entire Huskies’ program and wished them continued success. The Permanent War Government: Who’s Really Calling The Shots In Washington? By John & Nisha Whitehead Jun 4, 2026 Who Is Actually Running The Government? That is no longer a rhetorical question. As America’s war with Iran lurches from escalation to ceasefire to renewed threats of military force, Americans are being asked to trust that someone, somewhere, knows what they are doing. But who? This is the constitutional crisis hiding in plain sight. The question is not merely whether Donald Trump is fit to lead. The question is whether any president still leads in any meaningful constitutional sense once the permanent war government gets moving. The Iran war is merely the latest test case. If the war machine keeps moving even when the public cannot tell who is steering it, then what remains of constitutional government? This is the nightmare Rod Serling warned about in Seven Days in May. Released in 1964, Seven Days in May imagined a dramatic military coup: generals plotting in secret to overthrow an unpopular president because they believed they knew better than the American people what was best for the nation. The coup is eventually foiled. The republic is saved. The Constitution survives. At least on screen. In the real world, the plot has thickened and spread out over decades. The old fear was that the military might seize power from the civilian government. The modern reality is that the permanent government does not need to seize power. It already has it. The coup no longer requires generals in smoke-filled rooms plotting to overthrow the president at midnight. It does not require tanks on Pennsylvania Avenue or soldiers storming the Capitol. It does not even require an official suspension of the Constitution. All it requires is secrecy, fear, endless war, executive power, emergency declarations, classified intelligence, compliant courts, cowardly legislators, corporate profiteers, militarized police, and a public too distracted, exhausted or frightened to resist. That coup has been underway for decades. It is the coup that occurs when Congress surrenders its war powers to the president. It is the coup that occurs when presidents of both parties wage war without meaningful constitutional authorization. It is the coup that occurs when intelligence agencies spy on the American people and then hide behind national security. It is the coup that occurs when federal agencies arm themselves like military units. It is the coup that occurs when local police are transformed into extensions of the military. It is the coup that occurs when whistleblowers are punished, dissenters are surveilled, protesters are treated like enemies, and the public is told to trust whatever version of events the government chooses to release. It is the coup that occurs when unelected bureaucrats, contractors, data brokers, intelligence analysts, defense executives and crisis managers exercise more practical control over government policy than the voters do. This is how freedom disappears: not all at once, not in one dramatic seizure of power, but incrementally, bureaucratically, profitably and in the name of national security. Dwight D. Eisenhower warned us about this in 1961. A five-star general who understood war better than most modern politicians ever will, Eisenhower cautioned Americans to “guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex.” The danger, he warned, was that “misplaced power” would endanger liberty and democratic processes. He was right. The military industrial complex has become one of the most powerful governing forces in America. This is not a left-right problem. Both parties built this. Republicans and Democrats alike have funded the wars, renewed the surveillance powers, armed the police, expanded executive authority, protected intelligence agencies, rewarded defense contractors, and treated the Constitution as an inconvenience whenever fear could be used to silence dissent. One president abuses power. The next one inherits it. The next one expands it. The next one normalizes it. The next one weaponizes it. This is how emergency powers become everyday powers. This is how temporary measures become permanent law. This is how the president becomes a king in all but name. And this is how the people become spectators in their own government. This is exactly where we are. We have allowed the government to wage war without declarations of war. We have allowed intelligence agencies to operate behind walls of secrecy. We have allowed presidents to rule by executive order. We have allowed Congress to become a spectator. We have allowed the courts to defer to national security. We have allowed police to become soldiers. We have allowed corporations to profit from fear. We have allowed unelected officials to make decisions that alter the course of the nation. And then we act surprised when no one seems to know who is actually in charge. The answer is as obvious as it is disturbing. The permanent war government is in charge. This is the coup that does not end. This is the lesson of our age: the greatest threat to freedom is not always a madman seizing power in a single moment of crisis. Sometimes it is a bureaucracy that never sleeps, a war machine that never stops, a security state that never shrinks, and a political class that never says no. So what do we do? We stop allowing the government to turn every crisis into a blank check for more power. And we start insisting, relentlessly, that those who claim to defend the United States must defend it with the tools the Constitution supplies. If the government wants war, make Congress vote on it. If the government wants surveillance, make it get a warrant. If the government wants to police dissent, make it answer to the First Amendment. If the government wants to spend trillions on war, make it explain why the American people are being robbed blind to enrich defense contractors. If the government wants emergency powers, make it prove the emergency and surrender the powers when the crisis passes. If the Pentagon wants to run foreign policy, remind it that in a constitutional republic, the military answers to civilian authority, and civilian authority answers to the people. The permanent war government has given us endless wars, bankrupting debt, militarized police, mass surveillance, constitutional erosion, fear-driven politics, and a republic that increasingly resembles an occupied territory. If we are to remain free, the war machine must be brought back under constitutional control. The generals, bureaucrats, contractors, intelligence agencies, police forces and presidents must all be reminded of the same truth: They do not own this country. Fort Lauderdale Sailor Supports U.S. Navy Fighter Jet Mission By Ensign Andrew Hanchar, Navy Office of Community Outreach Jul 30, 2026 Every Sailor’s Story Of Naval Service Is Unique. For Hospitalman Asharia Hostzclaw, This Story Has Ties To Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Where Skills And Values Learned There Are Foundational To Success In The Navy. “I was a cheerleader in high school,” Hostzclaw said. “Being part of a team and having people rely on you and working together for a common goal helped prepare me for the Navy and working with other sailors.” Hostzclaw graduated from Dillard High School in 2024. Hostzclaw joined the Navy two years ago. “I joined the Navy to make my family proud,” Hostzclaw said. “I always knew I wanted to go into the medical field and wanted to go to college. The Navy lets me do both at the same time and is paying for my degree.” Today, Hostzclaw serves as a corpsman assigned to Naval Medical Readiness Training Unit Fallon onboard Naval Air Station (NAS) Fallon. The air station provides joint and allied nation rotational forces the unique opportunity to train in realistic combat scenarios while employing every element of an air carrier wing. It is the only facility in the world with this ability. The aircraft stationed at NAS Fallon support aircraft carrier missions around the world. NAS Fallon is host to 21 tenant commands, including the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center (NAWDC). As the Navy’s premier tactical air warfare training center, NAWDC is home to multiple weapons training schools, including TOPGUN. In 1969, TOPGUN was introduced with the mission of reducing casualties of naval aviators sustained during the Vietnam War. Within a year, this goal was reached with the United States having one casualty for every 12 enemy deaths. Since then, TOPGUN has continued to train the finest naval aviators and has inspired two blockbuster movies, one released in 1986 and its sequel released in 2022. Carrier strike groups and the embarked aviation squadrons are the cornerstone of U.S. naval power projection and sea power. They can quickly maneuver thousands of miles with the world’s most capable warships and top-notch sailors, remaining on station in areas of interest without relying on land bases or overflight agreements. U.S. Navy aircraft carriers are the most adaptable, lethal, and survivable airfields in the world and their presence serves as the most credible commitment to our allies and partners. Naval aviation provides the Navy and our nation with a flexible, adaptable and lethal force to preserve peace, respond in crises and win decisively in combat. The U.S. Navy maintains and operates more than 2,000 aircraft to fulfill various mission sets in order to preserve the American way of life and ensure freedom, security and prosperity. With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber-optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America. Hostzclaw has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service. “I am very proud to say that I made it through boot camp and am now out in the fleet,” Hostzclaw said. “I would have never thought I would have made it through and been this far away from my family and still be able to learn and accomplish so much.” Hostzclaw serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation’s prosperity and security.
