Consumer Alert: Attorney General Moody Warns of Payment App Hack Attacks November 11, 2021 Share Attorney General Ashley Moody is warning consumers about hackers taking advantage of the increase in mobile payment app usage. The COVID-19 pandemic may have prompted more people to use mobile payments rather than transfer cash, or even credit cards, between individuals to prevent the spread of germs. In 2019, 64 million individuals in the United States used peer-to-peer mobile payments. There are now more than 92 million individuals using peer-to-peer mobile payments and that number is expected to surpass 100 million by the end of 2021. More than 25% of all point-of-sale transactions in 2020 were made using a mobile wallet. This increase of mobile payments could continue with the holidays approaching. Attorney General Ashley Moody said, “Mobile payment app usage is on the rise and with the rapid increase in the popularity of these apps, comes the potential for hackers and scammers to attempt to interrupt transactions. Please be careful when using these apps and take steps to ensure the money you are sending goes to the intended recipient and not to a scammer.” According to reports, a retired couple, Sturm and his wife Aviva from Boynton Beach were victims of a mobile payment app hack. A hacker registered the couple for a Venmo account without the couple’s knowledge and siphoned off $1,500 a week until the bank account was completely drained.Sturm and his wife Aviva said they had no idea hackers had been stealing from their bank account from March until June of this year. "We found out when we paid the rent and it bounced," Alan said. How had the hacker done it? The Sturms said their bank account information apparently was used set up a Venmo account. Venmo is a virtual wallet you use to pay people- usually friends and family members for relatively small things like dinner or a tip. And then they said money from their account was transferred by Venmo to someone else. But the Sturms said they’ve never used Venmo at all. To prevent mobile payment app hacks, Attorney General Moody is providing the following tips to help Floridians use mobile payment apps safely and securely: • Create a second bank account with limited funds to connect to mobile payment applications; • Register a credit card rather than a bank account or a debit card as credit cards provide extra user protections; • Regularly review financial statements to check for signs of fraudulent transactions; and • Verify that money being sent is going to the correct recipient. < Previous News Next News >

Hollywood Resident Is Spreading Peace: Will Be Among The First Peace Corps Volunteers to Return to Service Overseas June 30, 2022 Share Hollywood resident Marquita Rusley is among the first Peace Corps volunteers to return to overseas service since the agency’s unprecedented global evacuation in March 2020. The Peace Corps suspended global operations and evacuated nearly 7,000 volunteers from more than 60 countries at the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic. “I want to build relationships with people in my overseas community by experiencing their customs and daily routines. Through my Peace Corps service, I hope to gain transferable skills that will help me become a teacher after I complete service,” said Rusley. Rusley is a graduate of Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in environment and society. She will serve as a volunteer in Togo in the education sector. “The world is at a critical juncture. The largest global vaccination effort in history is underway while other widespread health, social, political, and environmental issues continue to erode the foundation of our global society. Actions taken in the next few years have the potential to fundamentally impact development trajectories for decades to come,” said Peace Corps CEO Carol Spahn. “Peace Corps volunteers returning to Togo will work alongside community members to support urgent development efforts and build critical connections.” The volunteer cohorts are made up of both first-time volunteers and volunteers who were evacuated in early 2020. Upon finishing a three-month training, volunteers will collaborate with their host communities on locally prioritized projects in one of Peace Corps’ six sectors – agriculture, community economic development, education, environment, health or youth in development – and all will engage in COVID-19 response and recovery work. Currently, the agency is recruiting volunteers to serve in 40 countries around the world at the request of host country governments, to connect through the Peace Corps’ grassroots approach across communities and cultures. Volunteers have already returned to a total of 17 countries around the world. The Peace Corps continues to monitor COVID-19 trends in all of its host countries and will send volunteers to serve as conditions permit. Rooted In Holiday Park’s More Than 75-Year Legacy As Fort Lauderdale’s “Backyard,” The New Y Will Honor The Park’s Rich History While Building A Healthier Future For Generations To Come. This transformational project, with a combined 60,000-Square-Foot YMCA and Broward Health ED, will sit on a 3.5-acre site, donated by the City of Fort Lauderdale. Located adjacent to The Parker, this unique hub is designed to build a healthier community for all ages and bring new programs and services to east Fort Lauderdale. Not only will Fort Lauderdale be the first city in South Florida to have two YMCA locations, but this is also the first YMCA in the country to include an ED as part of its footprint and is the first freestanding ED for Broward Health in Fort Lauderdale. “We are very proud to stand on the grounds of Holiday Park and honored to partner with Broward Health,” said YMCA of South Florida President and CEO Sheryl A. Woods. “We couldn’t do this without our partners and supporters, including the City of Fort Lauderdale. With their support, this new, State-Of-The-Art YMCA will be a destination for all ages, abilities and backgrounds. It will be a real community hub, filled with healthy living, learning and community options and activities.” The 48,000-Square-Foot YMCA will offer a full-service health and wellness facility, including an aquatics center with a six-lane pool, indoor basketball court, State-Of-The-Art Fitness Center, youth sports, summer camps, after school programs, health and wellness programs and community rooms and will annually serve more than 15,000 children and families, including seniors and teens. The adjacent Broward Health 12,000-Square-Foot freestanding Emergency Department will bring full emergency services closer to home for residents including on-site imaging, such as CT scans and X-rays, and lab work and exam treatment areas staffed by board-certified emergency physicians. Broward Health will also occupy 2,000 Square Feet on the wellness floor of the new YMCA.
