If You're 65, There Is One Piece Of Mail You Shouldn't Ignore October 19, 2023 Share Are you or someone you love on Medicare? As the Annual Medicare Annual Enrollment Period approaches (it starts on October 15th and runs through December 7th) (BPT) - Are you or someone you love on Medicare? As the Annual Medicare Annual Enrollment Period approaches (it starts on October 15th and runs through December 7th), no doubt your mailbox will be flooded with letters, flyers and postcards from insurance companies and brokers pushing many Medicare options. But the one piece of mail you need to pay attention to is your current Medicare plan's Annual Notice of Change, commonly referred to as ANOC. All Medicare Advantage Plans and Part D Prescription Plans are required to send out this important letter before the end of September. They must tell you if your current plan is changing in any way, because if there are changes that you don't like, you have the right to change your plan during the Annual Enrollment Period. And yes, Medicare plans can change from year to year - and sometimes not for the better. What if your prescription drugs are no longer covered, you will need time to review different policies just to see if they are covered and if so what the costs are? Your doctor leaves the network? Your premium suddenly increases? Your co-payments jump? Protect your health and your wallet ... read that ANOC letter! Each insurance company has their own version of the ANOC letter, which may be up to 20 pages long, so grab a cup of coffee and get comfortable! Here are 6 things to look out for when reviewing your ANOC. • Change in plan premium. It's likely that a plan's premium may change from year to year. How much is dependent on what the individual carrier changes, but you could even see a plan with a $0 monthly premium change to having an actual dollar amount for you to pay. • Drug list changes. It's so important that you look at this list, also called the drug formulary. Prescriptions fall in and out of coverage or change price levels, so please review to see if your drugs are still covered and if there are any new restrictions. • Changes in co-pays. Check to make sure your doctor co-pays, including primary and specialists in and out of network, have not changed. • Network changes. This will show you if your doctors and pharmacies are no longer in your network or are no longer a preferred provider. • Out-of-pocket maximum. This is the amount of money you will pay out-of-pocket for all Medicare-covered expenses. Make sure to review this section to see if your out-of-pocket limit has changed. • Additional benefits in Medicare Advantage plans. For those with a Medicare Advantage plan, you may have coverage for additional benefits like Dental, Vision, Hearing, Telehealth and more. Caution! If you ignore the ANOC letter and you do nothing during the Annual Enrollment Period, your current plan will renew for 2024 - and you won't be able to make any changes until October 2024. Celebrating Shavuot: A Cheesy Jewish Holiday, What's That About By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil May 19, 2023 Share At a unique crossroads between religion and cuisine, the Holiday of Shavuot, celebrating the Giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai some 3,335 years ago, has become a celebration of fine dairy cuisine as well. Shavuot is celebrated for two days, this year beginning at sundown on Thursday, May 25th, 2023 and ending at nightfall on Saturday, May 27th, 2023. 50 days after leaving Egypt on Passover, the Jewish people received the Torah from G-d at Mount Sinai on the holiday of Shavuot. Shavuot literally means “weeks” and marks the completion of the seven-week counting period between Passover and Shavuot. Shavuot customs include all-night Torah study, listening to the recitation of the Ten Commandments, the reading of the Book of Ruth, eating dairy products and adorning the home with flowers. With the giving of the Torah, the Jews became obligated to observe the Kosher Laws. As the Torah was given on Shabbat, no cattle or poultry could be slaughtered, nor could we make sure that the animal's insides were healthy and then properly cleaned out as is required in order for the meat to be Kosher. In addition, utensils could not be Koshered, and as such we ate dairy. Exquisite cheesecakes, pesto pastas, lasagna, souffles and of course, cheese blintzes all take center stage during this ancient celebration. When thinking Jewish Holidays, Passover, Chanukah and Yom Kippur usually come to mind first. Nevertheless, Shavuot is considered one of Judaism's main holidays and was in fact a “pilgrimage” when all of Israel would travel to Jerusalem to celebrate in the Temple in Jerusalem. No, it isn't all about the food. Especially in a year like the one we are currently in, when we remember the Hakhel gatherings that took place in Jerusalem, what is important is that the community is joining together, hearing the Ten Commandments and celebrating the Torah. But the good food certainly helps. The tradition to learn all night has been practiced ever since we received the Torah. On the very night before G-d gave the Torah, we went to sleep, waking late in the morning. As a symbolic rectification for this, Jews customarily stay awake studying Torah until the morning, on the first night of Shavuot, this year on Sunday night. Since we all stood at Mount Sinai, we must all reaffirm our commitment. On Friday, May 26th, 2023 the Ten Commandments will be read aloud from the Torah. Special emphasis is placed on including the entire Jewish family, including little babies, the way the Torah’s giving was attended by every Jewish man, woman and child. The word Torah means “instruction” or “guide.” The Torah guides our every step and move through its 613 Mitzvahs. The word Mitzvah means both “commandment” and “connection.” Through the study of Torah and fulfillment of Mitzvahs, we connect ourselves and our environment to G‑d. G‑d’s purpose in creating the world was that all of creation be sanctified, imbuing it with holiness and spirituality. Since Shavuot is also called the “Harvest Festival,” it is customary to adorn the home with fruits, flowers and greens. Most of us are, thank G-d, able to get out and celebrate the way we have for over three thousand years. But for those that are for whatever reason staying home, that should in no way stop you from celebrating the holiday, since most of the holiday is super easy to celebrate even while at home alone. Not going to work ✓ Eating dairy ✓ Praying the special holiday prayers ✓ Studying Torah all night ✓ Decorating the home with flowers ✓ The only things that we can't do without a quorum, are hearing the Ten Commandments read from the Torah and praying with a minyan. But you can still study the Ten Commandments from a Torah Book, known as a Chumash ✓. And you can still read Yizkor, even without a minyan ✓. No Great Shakes (At Last): Brain Implant Helps Essential Tremor And Parkinson’s Disease Patients Regain Control May 17, 2024 Share Most of what Bob Carlton saw of Vietnam during his two wartime tours of duty was seen from the cockpit of an A-1 Skydiver, which means he played a significant role in saving the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of soldiers and civilians. Bob ran 162 missions across the five years he served as a naval aviator. He also ran a couple of missions that didn’t go quite as planned. Both resulted in crashes that Bob says he’s fortunate to have lived through. “One of the crashes occurred when the catapult on the aircraft carrier failed,” Bob remembers. “That plane went straight into the water. Never even got airborne. The second was the result of an engine fire, so I’m quite lucky to be here.” Luck indeed, but a couple of years ago, Bob began to feel like his luck was running out. A battle with essential tremor, a nervous system disorder that mostly causes involuntary twitching in the hands, was the reason. “For me, the problem started about 30 years ago,” says Bob, now over 70. It started with occasional little shakes in my left hand. Over time it got worse, a lot worse. It moved into both hands and got so bad it was hard to do almost anything. Just about anything you do with your hands, I couldn’t do. I couldn’t hold a fork or spoon or control a toothbrush, so eating and brushing my teeth were very difficult. The problem also made it very difficult to do one of my favorite hobbies, woodworking. Eventually, Bob grew tired of adapting. The shaking in his hands became so bad that after years of trying to control the problem through medication, he finally accepted his neurologist’s advice to try an advanced treatment option for the disorder. Life-Changing Procedure That treatment is called deep brain stimulation, or DBS. It is an FDA approved procedure in which the patient is implanted with a small pacemaker sized device that delivers electrical impulses to the specified areas of the brain. Studies show that within a year of being implanted with a DBS Device, Parkinson’s Disease and essential tremor patients experience a 90 percent improvement in motor function and a 30 percent decrease in medications. Bob underwent the approximately 2-hour DBS Procedure in September 2021. When he was released the next day, he felt “like a new man.” “It’s unbelievable. In three hours, a problem I’ve had for 30 years was fixed.” The impact of DBS has made on Bob’s life is so great that he gladly shares his experience with DBS Surgery to those considering the procedure. “People want to know, what’s the surgery like and does it really work?” Bob relates. “Well, I’ve been through it, so I’m there to tell them what it’s like and that it doesn’t just work, it changes your life. The investigation to find it features songs that provide clues to finding the culprit. Reaching thousands of children around the world, Ruesga is a Four-Time Grammy® Award Nominee for her Afro-Caribbean and Latin American Musical projects for young people from Cuba, Mexico, Bolivia, Puerto Rico, Germany, Sweden, Panama and the U.S. Internationally recognized for the production of several recordings of children's music, she has worked with Renowned Artists such as: Celia Cruz and Ricky Martin, among others. Discover the Arts Day: Gasper Arts Center and WMODA Join Forces In Dania Beach on Saturday, May 14th, 2022 May 5, 2022 Share WMODA is partnering with Gasper Arts to promote creativity in our community. On Saturday, May 14th, 2022, at the two locations on South Federal Highway, visitors can enjoy artist demonstrations and exhibitions for selling ceramics and glass art. The WMODA Museum creates cultural experiences and provides life-long learning opportunities to build the Dania Beach Arts Community. The new Gasper Arts Center expands this experience as an incubator for creativity with hand-on facilities for making ceramics and glass art. Gasper Arts will be open FREE to the public from 12:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with tours of the new studios and shared workspaces plus demonstrations of pottery making, glass mosaics, painting and more. Forman’s colorful impressionist environmentally inspired works will be on display at the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue). “Tim Forman’s summer exhibitions are one of our largest draws and we’re looking forward to showcasing his masterful landscape oil paintings,” said Patricia Zeiler, executive director of History Fort Lauderdale. “As a paintbrush historian, he excels at capturing the timeless beauty and serenity of Florida’s hidden treasures. He first picked-up the brush at nine years old under the instruction of Peter Olsen. By 17, Forman was receiving commissions. He uses field sketches, plein air paintings, and photographs to compose his pieces that are painted in layers with both knife and brush. Keeping Our Children Safe By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper Mar 26, 2026 Spring Break Is A Reminder That It Is Essential To Prioritize The Safety Of Our Children, Particularly Regarding Water Safety. Our City Collaborated With Broward Fire Rescue And Rotary, Alongside The YMCA, To Host A VIP Reception In Support Of Swim For Jenny Week. This Initiative Honors Jenny, A 12-Year-Old Who Tragically Lost Her Life In A Drowning Incident At A Pool Party. I Remain Committed To Advocating That Swimming Be Recognized As A Fundamental Life Skill Taught To Every Child. Given Florida's Abundance Of Water Environments, Including Pools, Lakes, Canals, Drainage Areas, And Oceans, This Education Is Vital. Last year, swimming deaths increased to double digits. The YMCA is now offering free swimming lessons for everyone aged six months and up. It is always possible to learn—years ago, I paid for a woman to take lessons when she could not swim. Additionally, it is essential not only to teach children how to swim but also to commit us to be Water Watchers. Accidents can occur within seconds—a child may unexpectedly fall into a pool. One guest speaker shared an incident with a pool party where everyone assumed that two fathers were supervising the children. Unfortunately, their attention was diverted, resulting in a tragic loss in mere moments. At every event, multiple individuals should be designated to monitor the water vigilantly. Statistics indicate that one in six children may die from drowning, while others are fortunate enough to be rescued. Every minute is critical. The increase in motorized scooters and bikes is a safety concern. Current law prohibits bikes, scooters, and skateboards in parks. At the last meeting, the commission agreed to enforce this policy. Children caught violating the ordinance will be fined, and if their parents are present, they will also be fined. These violations are classified as municipal ordinance notices, not moving violations. As far as on our sidewalks and streets. Hallandale Beach Police Department will be enforcing the law. All self-propelled vehicles must be driven on the street. Just like any other moving violation the operators will be fined, and the motorized vehicles will be impounded just like cars. Minors operating the vehicle will be held until an adult is present. To clarify, if you have bicycles that require pedaling to start, this is considered distinct from other types of vehicles. The same distinction applies to skateboards and push scooters. While enforcing sidewalk regulations presents challenges, our Police Department will be monitoring and addressing instances where individuals are recklessly endangering pedestrians. We encourage everyone to enjoy our city responsibly and, most importantly, to prioritize safety. It is essential that all members of the community learn to share the road. Drivers are reminded to avoid distractions such as mobile phones and to operate vehicles safely at all times.
