Holiday Travel Tips - For Those Traveling with a Loved One with Dementia December 5, 2024 Share One of the busiest travel times of the year is approaching, with nearly 80 million Americans are planning to travel during the long holiday period, according to AAA estimates. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is offering tips to help those traveling with a loved one with a Dementia-related illness make their trip as easy and comfortable as possible. “A family trip to visit a loved one, friend, or favorite destination can be a great way to spend the holiday season, including for those affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and other Dementia-related illnesses, including those affected by Dementia.” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services “Whether traveling near or far, there are preparations and adaptations family caregivers can make to help their loved one feel more comfortable and relaxed throughout the trip.” Before The Trip Make sure travel is advisable. Someone in the early stages of Dementia may still enjoy traveling, but as the disease progresses, travel may become too difficult. Factoring in the trip’s duration and/or the stage of the person’s illness, consult with their physician to make sure travel is recommended. Plan according to the person’s abilities. Plan the travel mode and timing of your trip in ways that minimize anxiety and stress. Assess the person’s abilities and needs when making arrangements; if they travel better at a specific time of day, try to schedule plans for that period of time. Preserve the person’s routine. Small or unfamiliar changes can be overwhelming and stressful to someone with Dementia, so to the greatest extent possible, maintain the person’s routine. For example, if they normally eat at a certain time, build that into the itinerary. Stock up before leaving. Bring snacks, water, activities and supportive items (i.e., a blanket, the person’s favorite sweater, a soft pillow). Include an extra and comfortable change of clothing that adapts to climate changes. Take important health and legal-related documentation, a list of current medications, and physician information with you. If Traveling by Mass Transit Know the security procedures. Check in advance with airports/train stations about security screening procedures and arrive early for a less stressful experience. This way, you can familiarize the person ahead of time about what will happen at the checkpoint. This can reduce potential anxiety. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) offers assistance with the screening process to air travelers with certain medical conditions, including Dementia-related illnesses; contact their TSA Cares Helpline at least 72 hours prior to your flight to learn more. Advise the airline. Let the airline know that you’re traveling with someone who has cognitive impairments and inform them of safety concerns and special needs. If traveling by car build in break time. Take regular breaks on road trips for food, bathroom visits, and rest. Frustration At The Pump - Why Americans Are Exploring Electric Vehicles South Florida Sun Times Jun 4, 2026 For More Than One-Third Of Americans, One Simple Number Is Changing The Way They Think About Driving: The Final Total On A Gas Station Receipt. What was once a routine stop has become a source of frustration for millions of drivers across the country. The rising cost of fuel is no longer viewed as a temporary inconvenience but as an ongoing financial burden that affects everyday decisions, from commuting to family road trips. According to new research from Hyundai Motor America, this growing frustration is pushing many Americans to explore alternatives to traditional gas-powered vehicles, particularly electric vehicles (EVs). For some, the idea begins as a passing thought while standing at the pump. For others, it quickly becomes serious research into what life without gasoline might actually look like. The survey found that 23% of respondents said they have experienced sticker shock at the pump more than once, and nearly half admitted that filling up their vehicle now brings feelings of frustration or outright dread. Drivers are increasingly reaching a point where the numbers simply stop making sense. Many consumers already have a tipping point in mind — a specific gas price where they begin reconsidering the long-term practicality of driving a gasoline-powered vehicle. For 23% of those surveyed, that threshold is $5 per gallon. Once prices climb into that territory, many Americans begin exploring alternatives. What starts as curiosity can quickly turn into action. Some drivers begin comparing vehicle models online. Others visit automaker websites or research charging stations in their area. In fact, 46% of respondents said they would be likely to seriously research an EV. For many Americans, the appeal of an Electric Vehicle goes beyond environmental considerations. Increasingly, the motivation is practical. Drivers are looking for ways to reduce unpredictable fuel expenses, simplify their routines, and gain more control over monthly transportation costs. One of the biggest advantages of driving an EV is the ability to charge at home. Instead of making weekly stops at a gas station, many EV owners simply plug in their vehicles overnight and wake up to a fully charged battery each morning. For commuters, this can fundamentally change the driving experience. Rather than monitoring gas prices or planning fuel stops during busy weeks, charging becomes part of a daily routine similar to plugging in a smartphone. For households with access to home charging, the convenience factor can be significant. The financial benefits can also add up over time. These concerns are especially common among drivers who have never owned an Electric Vehicle before. Questions about charging times, battery range, and Infrastructure availability often create hesitation, even among consumers who are otherwise interested in making the switch. However, charging networks across the country continue to expand, and many newer EV models now offer significantly longer driving ranges than earlier generations. For many daily commuters, modern EV ranges are more than sufficient for regular driving needs, allowing several days of use between charges depending on mileage and driving habits. Say Cheese - Shavuot Holiday 101 By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil May 22, 2025 At A Unique Crossroads Between Religion And Cuisine, The Holiday Of Shavuot, Celebrating The Giving Of The Torah At Mount Sinai Some 3,337 Years Ago, Has Become A Celebration Of Fine Dairy Cuisine As Well. Shavuot Is Celebrated For Two Days, This Year Beginning At Sundown On Sunday, June 1st, 2025 And Ending At Nightfall On Tuesday, June 3rd. 50 days after leaving Egypt on Passover, the Jewish people received the Torah from G-d at Mount Sinai on the holiday of Shavuot. Shavuot literally means “weeks” and marks the completion of the seven-week counting period between Passover and Shavuot. Shavuot customs include all-night Torah study, listening to the recitation of the Ten Commandments, the reading of the Book of Ruth, eating dairy products and adorning the home with flowers. With the giving of the Torah, the Jews became obligated to observe the Kosher Laws. As the Torah was given on Shabbat, no cattle or poultry could be slaughtered, nor could we make sure that the animal's insides were healthy and then properly cleaned out as is required in order for the meat to be Kosher. In addition, utensils could not be Koshered and as such we ate dairy. Exquisite cheesecakes, pesto pastas, lasagna, souffles, eggplant parmesan and of course, cheese blintzes all take center stage during this ancient celebration. When thinking Jewish Holidays, Passover, Chanukah and Yom Kippur usually come to mind first. Nevertheless, Shavuot is considered one of Judaism's main holidays and was in fact a “pilgrimage” when all of Israel would travel to Jerusalem to celebrate in the Temple in Jerusalem. No, it isn't all about the food. Especially in lieu of what's been happening in the world since Simchat Torah on October 7th, 2003, what is important is that the community is joining together, hearing the Ten Commandments and celebrating the Torah. But the good food certainly helps. The tradition to learn all night has been practiced ever since we received the Torah. On the very night before G-d gave the Torah, we went to sleep, waking late in the morning. As a symbolic rectification for this, Jews customarily stay awake studying Torah until the morning, on the first night of Shavuot, this year on Sunday night. Since we all stood at Mount Sinai, we must all reaffirm our commitment. On Monday, June 2nd, the Ten Commandments will be read aloud from the Torah. Special emphasis is placed on including the entire Jewish family, including little babies, the way the Torah’s giving was attended by every Jewish man, woman and child. The word Torah means “instruction” or “guide.” The Torah guides our steps and moves through its 613 Mitzvahs. The word Mitzvah means both “commandment” and “connection.” Through the study of Torah and fulfillment of Mitzvahs, we connect ourselves and our environment to G‑d. G‑d’s purpose in creating the world was that all of creation be sanctified, imbuing it with holiness and spirituality. Since Shavuot is also called the “Harvest Festival,” it is customary to adorn the home with fruits, flowers and greens. Most of us are, thank G-d, able to get out and celebrate the way we have for over three thousand years. But for those that are for whatever reason staying home, that should in no way stop you from celebrating the holiday, since most of the holiday is super easy to celebrate even while at home alone. Not going to work, Eating dairy, Praying the special holiday prayers, Studying Torah all night, Decorating the home with flowers, The only things that we can't do without a quorum, are hearing the Ten Commandments read from the Torah and praying with a minyan. But you can still study the Ten Commandments from a Torah Book, known as a Chumash. And you can still read Yizkor, even without a minyan.
