Baby on Board - But Is Baby Properly Buckled In Their Seat AAA Newsroom September 20, 2024 Share During National Child Passenger Safety Week (September 15th - September 21st), AAA and the National Safety Council (NSC) are releasing a safety alert for parents. A new AAA analysis of five years of government crash data reveals a concerning trend: child seat and booster use declines after a child turns three, despite the continued need for these safety devices. In Florida, 25.3% of parents and caregivers transitioned their children to a booster seat too soon and 93.5% transitioned to an adult seatbelt too soon. This is alarming, as over four million children aged 11 and under were involved in car crashes, from 2018 to 2022, resulting in 547,000 injuries and nearly 3,000 fatalities. “We know parents and caregivers go to great lengths to protect their children,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Yet, even with the best intentions, parents may unknowingly endanger their children by putting them in the wrong seat or not securing them properly. Since safety recommendations can vary as your child grows, AAA urges parents to take a moment to understand what type of child restraint to use and when.” According to the National Digital Car Seat Check Form (NDCF) database, of the car seats inspected in 2023, 74% were not used properly or incorrectly installed. The three most common misuses were: Car seat installation is too loose. Not using the tether when installing a forward-facing car seat with either the lower anchors or seat belt. The harness is too loose when securing a child in a car seat. When used correctly, car seats, booster seats, and seat belts protect young passengers. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, child restraints reduce fatalities by 71% for infants younger than one and by 54% for children 1 to 4 years old in passenger cars. Child Seat Advice • Find the right car seat. Types of seats vary based on their age, weight and height. Visit: https://www.nhtsa.gov/campaign/right-seat • Install your car seat correctly. Review instructions and video tutorials. • Get your car seat inspected. The placement of the safety harness or seat belt can be critical. • Register your car seat. Sign up for recall notices to receive safety updates. “Parents are often eager to turn their young children forward-facing in their car seats too soon,” Jenkins said. “However, due to their underdeveloped bodies, young children below the age of two who ride forward-facing are at a greater risk of head, neck and spinal cord injuries if involved in a collision.” Which seat should I use? If you’re not sure when to move your child to the next type of car seat, look to these stages: • Rear-facing safety seat: Children should stay rear-facing as long as possible, up to the limits of the car safety seat. This includes almost all children under 2. • Forward-facing safety seat, with harness: Many seats can take children up to 60 pounds or more. When they are ready and exceed the seat’s limits, move to a belt-positioning booster seat. • Belt-positioning booster seat: Use until the vehicle’s lap and shoulder seat belts fit properly—generally when children are at least 4 feet, 9 inches tall (usually 8 to 12 years old). • Front seat versus back seat: All children younger than 13 should be restrained in the rear seats. Young children riding in the front seat can be injured or even killed if an air bag opens. Florida Law on Child Seats Florida’s law on this subject does not reflect best practices. Currently, children riding in motor vehicles are required to be in a safety seat until their 6th birthday. However, AAA feels that law is not strong enough and recommends that children use a safety seat until they are at least 4’9” tall and pass the “Seat Belt Fit Test.” “Seat belts are designed for adults, not children,” Jenkins said. “A seat belt that does not fit correctly, could cause injury in the event of a crash.” Seat belts are about height not age. Check the following before moving your child to an adult seat belt: • Your child’s knees bend at the edge of the seat when the back and bottom are against the vehicle seat back. Feet should touch the floor for comfort and stability. • The vehicle lap belt fits snugly across the hips or upper thighs. • The shoulder belt fits across the shoulder and chest, NOT across the face or neck. • If your child does not meet all three of these conditions, they should continue using a car seat or booster seat until they get taller. According to AAA’s analysis, the latest government data reflects a need for parents to ensure they use the correct child restraint system for each growth phase. Every child deserves protection - Nearly 4 in 10 (37%) children aged 7-11 killed in a car crash were completely unrestrained. For the youngest children, aged 0-3, 1 in 4 (26%) who were killed were unrestrained. Parents and caregivers are good at getting expert help when children are less than one year old or before birth, but they do not always come back for adjustments as the child ages. According to the NDCF, Child Passenger Safety Technicians inspect about five times the number of rear-facing car seats compared to forward-facing car seats, and 83.5% of those were not used correctly. It’s about height, not age - Children are often transitioned out of the appropriate car seats before it is safe. According to the NDCF, 24.9% of children move to booster seats too soon, and 93.6% transition to a seat belt too soon. Many parents may not know that seat belt fit is more about their child’s height than age. Based on their size, some children older than ten years old may benefit from using a booster seat. Most booster seats accommodate children up to a height of 57 inches. Heat it over medium heat. In a skillet, stir the egg whites constantly with a rubber spatula to scramble them. Cook it until the eggs are almost set. Add the beans, stirring until they are combined and heated through. Microwave the tortillas on high for 45 seconds. Transfer them to the work surface. Spread the egg mixture in the center of each tortilla. Top it with the Avocado and the hot sauce, if desired. For each burrito, fold two sides of the tortilla toward the center. Starting from the closest unfolded side, roll the burrito toward the remaining unfolded side to enclose the filling. Transfer it seam side down onto the plates. Aventura Is Coming: The Brightline Station Will Soon Be A Reality July 15, 2021 Share Brightline's Aventura station will open at the 19800 block of West Dixie Highway. Things are warming up, with it’s boots on the ground, as Brightline getting ready to reopen with a brighter, revamped service, this Fall. In the meantime, Brightline wanted to loop you in on their most recent update. They heard you loud and clear, this past year, they have focused on all those expansions that will keep you connected to the people and places that matter the most to you. Aventura Station Located at the halfway point between their Miami and Fort Lauderdale stations, this new 17,500 square-foot station will have unique features that include a new pedestrian bridge over West Dixie Highway and a Miami-Dade Transit bus drop-off canopy. The Aventura station, located just west of Aventura Mall, will be built on three acres of land. The station itself, includes a 860-foot platform, along the tracks to which Brightline and parent company Florida East Coast Railway, have the right-of-way. Construction will also add 240 parking spaces and the site includes, a bus drop-off area. Love to shop? Then you’re in luck, as the station design includes a bridge that will connect to the Aventura Mall in the future. In a recent interview with Eric Claussen, SVP of Design and Deve-lopment, he was asked to give more details about this upcoming station. Why An Aventura Station? The West Aventura location is a great opportunity to serve residents and workers in this area that is midway between the Miami and Fort Lauderdale stops. It is also located in an area with a lot of supporting roadway networks and Miami-Dade County Transit Connect-ions, this makes it easily accessible from any direction. Additionally, the future connection to the mall, makes this location, even more attractive. What Amenities Will The Station Offer? Along with our other stations – we have lounges to accommodate our passengers in air-conditioned comfort, while awaiting their train's arrival. This area is secured, will have grab and go offerings for guests at our newly designed, tech forward, Good to Go Retail Stores. What Inspires The Design of This Station? Movement has always been an inspiration to our station design and can be seen in the dynamic form created by the concrete V-braces, evident on Brightline's stations, both, here and at future locations. What Is The Maximum Capacity of The Station? The lounge seating capacity is roughly 100 seats with adequate standing room, if needed. What Makes You Excited About This Station? It’s an expansion of our family of stations – for me, what I find exciting about this and other expansion locations, is a validation that intercity passenger rail and connectivity of local destinations for shorter trips – either business or pleasure has a demand. Brightline Trains Operating at Top Speeds For the first time since Brightline began testing, trains will be able to operate at the FRA approved and authorized top speeds of 79 miles per hour outside of the specific testing zones and along the entire 67 mile corridor, from West Palm Beach to Miami. Trains will be adhering to quiet zones throughout testing and will not sound horns, in the designated areas. With trains now operating on the tracks at more regular intervals and at top speeds, Brightline is reminding the public, pedestrians, motorists and cyclists to make safe choices around trains and crossings. The safety message is simple: Look, Listen, Live. Drivers and pedestrians should obey all traffic laws around crossings and never stop on the tracks! The Shavuot Holiday: A Unique Crossroad Between Religion and Cuisine By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil June 2, 2022 Share The Holiday of Shavuot marks the celebration of the Giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai some 3,334 years ago, the holiday has become a celebration of fine dairy cuisine as well. Shavuot is celebrated for two days, this year beginning at sundown on Saturday, June 4, 2022 and ending at nightfall on Monday, June 6. That makes it a long 3 day holiday weekend! 50 days after leaving Egypt on Passover, the Jewish people received the Torah from G-d at Mount Sinai on the holiday of Shavuot. Shavuot literally means “weeks” and marks the completion of the seven-week counting period between Passover and Shavuot. Shavuot customs include all-night Torah study, listening to the recitation of the Ten Commandments, the reading of the Book of Ruth, eating dairy products and adorning the home with flowers. With the giving of the Torah, the Jews became obligated to observe the Kosher Laws. As the Torah was given on Shabbat, no cattle or poultry could be slaughtered, nor could we make sure that the animal's insides were healthy and then properly cleaned out as is required in order for the meat to be Kosher. In addition, utensils could not be Koshered, and as such we ate dairy. Exquisite cheesecakes, pesto pastas, lasagna, souffles and of course, cheese blintzes all take center stage during this ancient celebration. When thinking Jewish Holidays, Passover, Chanukah and Yom Kippur usually come to mind first. Nevertheless, Shavuot is considered one of Judaism's main holidays and was in fact a “pilgrimage” when all of Israel would travel to Jerusalem to celebrate in the Temple in Jerusalem. No, it isn't all about the food. What is important is that the community is joining together, hearing the Ten Commandments and celebrating the Torah. But the good food certainly helps. The tradition to learn all night has been practiced ever since we received the Torah. On the very night before G-d gave the Torah, we went to sleep, waking late in the morning. As a symbolic rectification for this, Jews customarily stay awake studying Torah until the morning, on the first night of Shavuot, this year on Sunday night. Since we all stood at Mount Sinai, we must all reaffirm our commitment. On Sunday, June 6th, 2022, the Ten Commandments will be read aloud from the Torah. Special emphasis is placed on including the entire Jewish family, including little babies, the way the Torah’s giving was attended by every Jewish man, woman and child. The word Torah means “instruction” or “guide.” The Torah guides our every step and move through its 613 mitzvahs. The word mitzvah means both “commandment” and “connection.” Through the study of Torah and fulfillment of mitzvahs, we connect ourselves and our environment to G‑d. G‑d’s purpose in creating the world was that all of creation be sanctified, imbuing it with holiness and spirituality. Since Shavuot is also called the “Harvest Festival,” it is customary to adorn the home with fruits, flowers and greens. Most of us will, thank G-d, be able to get out this year and celebrate the way we have for over three thousand years. But for those that are staying home, for any reason, that should in no way stop you from celebrating the holiday, since most of the holiday is super easy to celebrate even while at home alone. Not going to work ✓ Eating dairy ✓ Praying the special holiday prayers ✓ Studying Torah all night ✓ Decorating the home with flowers ✓ The only things that we can't do without a quorum, are hearing the Ten Commandments read from the Torah and praying with a minyan. But you can still study the Ten Commandments from a Torah Book, known as a Chumash ✓. And you can still read Yizkor, even without a minyan ✓. The Smart Stage Matinee Series of school-day performances begins in October with shows that are ideal for charter, private, public and parochial school students and home-school networks. Free study guides called “Curriculum Connections” are available to download on the Broward Center’s website. Families with young children looking for a daytime activity are also encouraged to attend. Many productions offer an optional added Smart Stage Plus interactive learning experience for groups of 20-90 students.
