As a kid growing up in Coventry, England, he had no idea that one day, he would be performing in cirque shows around the world and making a living with magic. Dizzy told us, "I am sometimes asked if I always wanted to be a magician and to be honest, the short answer is no – but I always followed my interests. I started out in martial arts; I just loved the physicality and athleticism it required. My favorite moves were the ones that involved spinning and kicking and jumping, and those movements would soon morph into a love of breakdancing. I taught myself all the power moves, and even though I didn’t have an ounce of rhythm, I loved doing all of the acrobatic tricks. Believe it or not, those tricks landed me a gig as Sir Francis Drake in a stunt show in Majorca, Spain." During this time Dizzy spent several seasons doing backflips and high falls and sword fights with my fellow swashbucklers. When his tenure as a professional pirate eventually came to an end (actually due to a fight with Blackbeard; that’s a whole other story), he wandered into a cirque audition back in London and blew away the casting directors with everything he had learned. As the other applicants were fussing about which music they wanted, he ran up the wall, did a backflip, and when he landed, he had everyone’s attention. As it turns out, in some careers, bouncing off the walls is a good thing. He was hired and moved to Myrtle Beach to work for Le Grand Cirque and was exposed to a myriad of different performers, including some influential magicians (who would eventually become his teachers), and everything just clicked into place. One of those influential magicians was Janna Roukhmanova – she is a world-renowned, multi-discipline cirque performer originally from Moscow, Russia. She also happens to be his wife! Hollywood Loves Pickleball: The Game Is Sweeping The City & The Nation May 17, 2024 Share Pickleball, a quirky-sounding name for a sport that's sweeping across the globe, is a delightful blend of Tennis, Badminton, and Ping Pong. With its origins dating back to the mid-20th century, this fast-paced game has captured the hearts of people of all ages and fitness levels. In a community gathering marked by enthusiasm and anticipation last week, City of Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy welcomed residents to the unveiling of the revamped Stan Goldman Memorial Park. Joined by locals, community figures, and dedicated workers, Mayor Levy underscored the significance of the park's enhancements, particularly the addition of new Pickleball Courts. Stan Goldman Park is a 12 acre passive park which runs along a canal and Interstate 95, connecting Johnson Street and Hollywood Boulevard. The park features a fitness trail, fishing area, playground, picnic areas, dog park, the newly expanded Pickleball Courts, a skatepark and restrooms. It was named after Late City Commissioner Stan Goldman who was a city commissioner for eight years. He was a longtime advocate for the park and worked to expand it. The park was dedicated to him in 1986. The Pickleball Courts expansion was made possible by a capital investment of nearly $300,000 capital injection, with project management led by the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts and the Design & Construction Management Department. Local pride was evident in the involvement of Merrick Industrial Management Corporation, a Hollywood-based contractor tasked with bringing the vision to life. Their contribution underscores a commitment to enhancing the community they call home. How It Started Pickleball traces its roots back to Bainbridge Island, Washington, in 1965. It all began when Joel Pritchard, a congressman, and his friend Bill Bell returned home one afternoon to find their families bored and restless. In an attempt to entertain them, they rummaged through their garage and found some Ping Pong Paddles, a perforated plastic ball, and a Badminton court. Little did they know, this impromptu invention session would lead to the birth of a new sport. Experimenting with various rules and equipment, they created a game that combined elements of Badminton, Tennis, and Ping Pong. They lowered the Badminton Net, modified the paddles, and adopted a plastic ball with holes. As the game evolved, the founders named it after the Pritchard family's dog, Pickles, who had a habit of chasing after stray balls. From its humble beginnings in a backyard on Bainbridge Island, Pickleball quickly gained popularity among friends and neighbors. Within a few years, it spread to other parts of the United States and eventually across the globe. Today, Pickleball is played in community centers, retirement communities, schools, and parks worldwide. Here Are The Rules Pickleball is played on a Badminton-sized court with a modified Tennis Net. The rules are relatively simple, making it accessible to players of all skill levels. Here's a brief overview of how the game is played: Equipment: Pickleball is played with a paddle made of wood, graphite, or composite materials and a plastic ball with holes, similar to a Wiffle Ball. By Aaron Seibert Jul 24, 2026 Veterans With Severe PTSD And Depression Are Increasingly Traveling Overseas For Treatments They Cannot Legally Access In The United States. After exhausting medications and conventional treatments, many are traveling to clinics in countries like Mexico to pursue psychedelic-assisted treatments. Others are seeking underground providers outside any regulated medical system. That should concern everyone -- not because these treatments are necessarily unsafe, but because Veterans are being pushed outside the safeguards of the American healthcare system to access them. If promising medicines exist, the United States has a responsibility to study them and, if they prove safe and effective, make them available through a regulated system here at home. Today, too many Veterans have nowhere safe to turn. Seventeen Veterans die by suicide each day in the United States. Many more live with PTSD and depression that existing treatments fail to address. These are stubborn, complex conditions. Many Veterans spend years cycling through medications, therapy programs, and referrals with little meaningful relief. It has been more than 25 years since the United States has approved a new treatment for PTSD. With conventional treatments failing, some Veterans are traveling overseas to access psychedelic-assisted treatments being used abroad. Veterans are navigating unfamiliar providers and inconsistent standards because they believe these treatments may offer their best chance at recovery. But seeking care abroad comes with a lot of risks. For starters, it's harder to verify if a provider has a legitimate medical license or credentials. Many of these clinics operate outside the oversight and safeguards of the U.S. medical system. As CBS News has reported, there are no standardized health screenings before treatment, required monitoring protocols, or requirements to track adverse effects. That wouldn't be the case on American soil. It is time to create a safe, regulated pathway for Veterans to access these medicines within the protections of the American medical system. For decades, skepticism surrounding psychedelic compounds largely shut down research in the United States. But over the past twenty years, that has begun to change. Major academic institutions have restarted carefully controlled clinical studies. Governments and regulators are beginning to respond. In 2023, Australia became the first country to permit limited clinical use of MDMA and psilocybin under strict psychiatric supervision. U.S. policymakers have recently shown greater openness to expanding psychedelic research. The clinical evidence continues to grow. Psilocybin medicine has produced rapid reductions in symptoms of major depression. MDMA-assisted treatment has shown substantial reductions in PTSD symptoms. In one trial, 67% of participants no longer met the diagnostic criteria for PTSD after treatment. These treatments are being held to the same scientific and regulatory standards applied to any other medicine seeking approval. Nothing should move forward without rigorous FDA review. But if research continues to demonstrate strong results, Veterans should not be forced to leave the country to access care that may help them heal. Veterans are already seeking these treatments. The real question is where -- and under what conditions -- they receive them. They deserve the safest option. Aaron Q. Bringing Joy To Those In Need By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper Jan 1, 2026 Last Week I Had A Chance To Attend The 21st “Hope For The Holidays” Presented By PAL And Hosted By Sandy Atkins Of South Florida Educational Development Center. We Know That Holidays Are Not Always Joyous For Everyone. Many Residents Are Struggling During These Times And Quite Often Christmas Adds More Financial Burden Especially For Families. Sandy Atkins created Hope for the Holidays over 20 years ago. She worked at the time for Broward County addressing homelessness. She has been a member and treasurer of Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church right here in our City. As part of the youth ministries, they founded SFEDC to help young students with hands-on educational help. Since 2009, South Florida Educational Development Center, Inc., located at 620 Northwest 2nd Avenue, Hallandale Beach, Florida 33009, has provided individual and group counseling, nutritional education, HIV/AIDS and STD prevention education, substance abuse counseling, job training, job placement and job retention, homeless assistance, outreach, mentoring and tutoring to over three hundred youth and young adults in Broward County, Florida. They have an excellent track record of results. They have documented an 85% success rate from individual and group counseling, tutoring and mentoring and substance abuse and HIV/AIDS and teen pregnancy prevention programs. They partner with other Non-Profits to leverage support services programs which have resulted in the successful job placement of 90% of young adults into permanent employment and have documented 60% home ownership from our housing program. In addition, we have a 95% success rate among our students who have received tutoring from our staff. A few years back Sandy took a break from Hope For the Holidays. The years of volunteerism had taken a toll. I had watched her hard work and truly loved what they do for our struggling families. I asked her if I could do the event. So for a couple of years I picked up the baton. Gulfstream Park graciously hosted the event. The past three years, I along with the group have done the event. PAL, which is housed at the Dr. Martin Luther King Dream Center, formerly Foster Park, hosted the event once again. Obviously, it takes a village to put together this type of event. I helped with fundraising alongside Sandy. We had many gracious supporters. Westway Towing, Gulfstream Park, Memorial Healthcare System, Wellcare, Florida Thoroughbred Horsemen and FHBPA Association, Eric George Funeral Home, Healing Foundation of America, Design2Form, Jessi Smatt Tennis, many members of the tennis club and myself. This event is not just about toys. They also provided clothing, food, bikes and made sure everyone that attended was able to have lunch. There was entertainment as well as a visit from Santa.
