For Our Kids By Nicole Carter - City Of Hallandale Bch June 3, 2021 Share We Need To Get This Summer Right Even under normal circumstances – pre-pandemic, that is – research showed that students in afterschool and summer learning programs get better grades For students and educators alike, this school year has been a seemingly endless grind, presenting one trauma-inducing challenge, after another. School schedules have been in flux, safety protocols have been an adjustment, screen time has been on overload and throughout, this specter, of a horrible disease has loomed over us. Many students have felt isolated, some haven't done as well with on-line learning – either for reasons of access or simply, because, it just didn't click for them. Others have been entirely left behind and in short, we have a lot of ground to make up. So, as summer approaches, our schools and families face painful challenges, as they work to bring students back together. Our children need the chance to make up any lost ground and reconnect with classmates. But, we need that to happen in a way that doesn't burn out students and teachers, all of whom, have been through the ringer, this past year. With a boost from the American Rescue Plan, the latest COVID relief bill from Washing-ton, many children and families will find that summer learning programs are the solution, if we ensure, that they are structured to meet at the moment. Now more than ever, we need to pay attention to the full range of our children's needs. Getting back on track academically, is surely part of the puzzle, but, it's not the only part. We also want them to reconnect with classmates and educators, create forums for them to talk about their Pandemic experiences, do hands-on, team-based learning, get some exercise and experience as much normalcy, as it can be found. Come fall, the status of the Pandemic, permitting, we want the children to be ready to resume, to a normal school schedule and not to be burnt out, on the first day of school. That's why, summer learning programs have such a vital role to play. They mix learning and fun in exactly the ways our kids need it, in this most unusual time. In addition to help with academics, they give students the chance to learn new skills: Creating Web-sites, Com-puter Coding, Making Videos, Planting, Maintaining Community Gardens, Learning Photography, Building Robots and so much more. They make sure students have plenty of time to run around and be kids – playing individual and team sports, splashing in swimming pools, shooting baskets or playing volleyball. They connect children with community organizations for service projects, take them to visit local businesses, science centers, libraries, museums, colleges, parks and more. Our summer learning program at the City of Hallandale Beach After School Tutorial and Enrich-ment Program will include project-based learning, activities in science, technology, engineering, the arts, mathematics (STEAM), cultural and performing arts activities, swimming lessons and field trips. We have 180 students enrolled and are staffed with seven certified teachers, seven teacher assistants, five teacher aides and seven summer youth aides. Even under normal circumstances – Pre-Pandemic, that is – research has shown, that students in after school and summer learning programs get better grades, are more excited about learning and participate more, in school. That's not just because of the specific information they learn in summer and after school programs, but because of the skills they build, including teamwork and problem-solving, for example. In recent years, one significant reason that many children did not participate in summer programs, was that there weren't programs to be found. The American Rescue Plan provides significant funding to states that can be used to support summer learning programs. As a result, school districts and state education agencies can support summer learning programs, after school programs that will supplement classroom education, serving more kids, in more places, for longer periods of time and by using the best evidence-based, practices. It's been a hard year for everyone and we've got a lot of ground to make up. We'll need every player in our children's learning ecosystem – schools, summer learning programs, youth-serving organizations, parents and families – to play a part in the recovery process. New resources make that possible, thank goodness and now, we need to make sure that we bring everyone to the table! Aventura Uproar: Founders Park South Changes Have Many Residents Upset July 18, 2023 Share The City of of Aventura Was Excited to share the first renderings of the plans for Founders Park South. Many residents took to social media to voice their opinions on the upcoming changes. "Placing a tennis court – which inherently creates noise, requires bright lighting, and demands hard surfaces – adjacent to the community gardens disrupts the essence of what these gardens represent: TRANQUILITY, relaxation, and a place to connect with nature. The city is already packed with tennis courts and it's only one community garden as such!" Angie Ross "This is a terrible idea, and it’s one of the reasons that Aventura property values are sub-par compared to places like Coral Gables, where the city government is marginally more concerned with the benefits of quiet, green spaces (rather than building on every available open area and packing as many activities as possible into a finite space). Aventura is going down the toilet, mainly because a few special interests have managed to sleaze their way to get their way." The city is working with a landscape architect and has consulted a horticulturist to help us select vegetation that will attract butterflies. When the renovations of Founders Park South are complete, three tennis courts and five pickleball courts will be ready for Aventura’s residents to play. With mother nature’s help, we expect the park to reopen in early 2024." What Could Possibly Go Wrong: Do You Need Travel Insurance For Your 2023 Vacation? He's still working out some of the details, but one thing he is sure of: getting travel insurance. Graham can't imagine traveling without it. "We feel better knowing we have the safety of insurance," says Graham, a retired telecommunications worker from Danville, California. And who can blame him? The Pandemic made travel insurance a must-have item for many travelers, including people like Graham, who fit the "must be insured" profile (retired, overseas travel, cruising). Others who are planning their 2023 trips may still be on the fence. I can help you decide. It's going to be another interesting year for travel, experts say. "Between flight disruptions, weather issues, and unexpected medical emergencies, travel is unpredictable and will continue to be so in 2023," says Carol Mueller, a Vice President at Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection. It's natural for people to think about travel insurance. But what should they do? Graham's concerns are common. For example, what if there's another COVID-19 Outbreak or the war in Ukraine affects his cruise? He's also worried about a possible trip disruption or medical emergency. Those are issues that a standard travel insurance policy can address. But there are so many choices. "Travelers are more interested in purchasing travel insurance than ever," says Karisa Cernera, a Director at Redpoint Travel Protection, a travel insurance company. "But choosing a travel protection plan can be overwhelming." What kind of insurance is available for your 2023 trip? If you're planning to spend more than $5,000 on a trip and you have prepaid, nonrefundable expenses like airfare and a hotel, you need some kind of insurance. Here are your options: • Most standard travel insurance policies cover "named" perils such as trip cancellation, delays, medical emergencies, medical evacuation, interruptions, and lost luggage. They cost between 5% and 7% of your nonrefundable, prepaid trip expenses. • A "cancel for any reason" policy covers all of the above -- plus, you can cancel your trip for any reason and get anywhere between 50% and 75% of your money back. A "cancel for any reason" policy costs between 9% and 12% of the cost of your trip. • You may also have coverage through your homeowner's or renter's insurance, auto insurance, or credit card. You're already paying for them, so you may be able to skip a separate policy. Before you buy anything, you owe it to yourself to check the type of insurance you already have. It may be enough. That's what Anand Kumar, a program manager from San Ramon, California, discovered when he booked a Baltic cruise. "I concluded that my credit card provides reasonable travel insurance as well as other benefits, so long as I booked my trip with the card," he says. Why should you buy travel insurance in 2023? Do you need a travel insurance policy? That depends on who you are -- and your circumstances. Here's a checklist. If any of these apply, you may need a policy. Peace of mind. That's the number one reason people buy insurance. "They want assurances that if the worst happens, they're covered," says Dan Richards, CEO of Global Rescue, a company that provides medical, security, evacuation and travel risk management services. That's top of mind for 2023, with a war and instability continuing to threaten many vacations. Medical coverage. That's a lesson Francesca Owens, a travel coach who moderates Travel The Inside Out Facebook group, learned while traveling internationally. She says she "stupidly" skipped insurance and had to pay cash to settle her hospital bills in Prague. Now she insists that her clients always get insurance. "If they won't buy insurance," she says, "I won't work with them." Trip interruption and travel delay benefits. Last summer's airline disruptions made travelers think about ways of avoiding the chaos. "Travelers want security," explains Terry Boynton, president of Yonder Travel Insurance. "They want to know that if the travel industry is still still not fully stable in 2023, travel insurance will help foot the bill for trip interruptions, travel delays, and lost or delayed baggage." Cancellation protection. If you can't if you can’t afford to lose the money you paid toward your trip, then you might want to splurge for a more expensive "cancel for any reason" policy, say experts like Melissa Beers, Co-Owner of: https://myjourneybeginstravel.com/ Anything else can be a headache when you file a claim, and there's no guarantee you'll be covered. "Generally, you have to back it up with medical information and other proof before a travel insurance company will pay the claim," she says. But do the math before you buy one: You may be spending more than you would get if you file a claim. How do I know what kind of insurance I need? Which policy is right for you? That isn't easy to answer because each traveler is different. If you're a 20-something adventure seeker, you'll need a policy like Redpoint's Ripcord policies, which include rescue. If you're retired, you'll want a comprehensive policy. For example, Graham has decided to buy a policy through Seven Corners, which he found after extensive research. It covers the basics, "and it has a good reputation for claims," he says. Consulting with a travel professional can help. But don't rely on a travel agent. Instead, conduct independent research online. (I publish a free guide on travel insurance that may help.) Geoffrey Millstone, a travel advisor with Clarksburg Travel, says travel insurance has changed since the Pandemic. Regular "named perils" policies have new rules that make claims more tedious, and lately travel insurance companies have been slower because of this summer's travel disruptions. He warns that you have to read the fine print carefully. "Cancel for any reason policies work, but they can take between 60 and 90 days to process the claim," he adds. Whether or not you buy travel insurance for your 2023 trip, travelers say you should at least consider it. Ross Copas, an industrial electrician from Tweed, Canada, says he had a close call on a recent polar cruise that reminded him of the importance of insurance. "There were a few anxious days before we were tested for COVID-19 and boarded the ship," he remembers. "We had not bought cruise cancellation coverage for that cruise and were looking at losing a significant amount of money if we tested positive." Most major travel insurance policies cover COVID-19 but require you to be hospitalized. There's a workaround. You can also buy travel insurance through a company like Covac Global, a membership program that specializes in covering infectious diseases like COVID-19 and medical evacuation without hospitalization requirements. Fortunately, Copas tested negative. But he learned an important lesson: Always consider your travel insurance options before you book your trip. Sasa Italian Gourmet Opens in Downtown Hollywood on Harrison Street May 30, 2024 Share He's lived in three countries and many cities. He's had multiple businesses, ranging from fashion boutiques to furniture manufacturers to restaurants, in even more cities. He's a businessman, an artist, and a risktaker, but Hollywood is the only place to which he has ever come back to reinvent a business and make it even better. He's Salvatore Savarese, better known as Sasa, the owner of the former eponymous restaurant located in a little house on South 20th Avenue at Van Buren Street. Now he's back with a newer, better version of the restaurant, Sasa Italian Gourmet, at 2000 Harrison Street #2 in Downtown Hollywood. Never one to repeat himself, though, Sasa (the man) has created the new Sasa (the shop), to be even more than its predecessor, with an Italian market in the front, and a bright, art-filled cafe in the back. There, he and his wife, Loiris Lakatos, sell the paninis, salads and Italian desserts for which the original restaurant is known, while in the market, they offer a unique variety of wines, cheeses, handmade pastas and flatbreads, and other items that cannot be found anywhere else nearby. "We started with a boutique on Hollywood Boulevard," recalled Sasa, who has been in the US for over 20 years. "Then we began looking for our next adventure, and my wife said 'Why don't we make a place for coffee and breakfast?' And then we found the charming little house where we began with coffee, then expanded with food. We were there for seven years but left when the house was sold. It took two years to find a new place." He continued, "I like a place with music. And, of course, if you are in Italy and you find a romantic restaurant, it's not only the food; it's the music, the atmosphere that makes you stay. It's beautiful this place where you spend one or two hours and relax; it's like being on vacation. I love this! This is my conception of a restaurant." That concept is evident at Sasa Italian Gourmet. In the cafe, Sasa serves a simple fare of paninis, salads, flatbreads, and Italian desserts. Favorites from the original location have returned, including the Sasa Appetizer ($21 per person, minimum 2 people). And for dessert, the Sasa Cake, the couple's unique creation of chocolate cake with classic Italian custard crema, orange, and Amaretto liquor ($8.50). "A lot of Amaretto," Lakatos added. "This one is not for kids." "And there is music," confirmed her husband. "No TV." The new part of the business, the market, sells a host of mostly Italian specialty products. "We have Italian mineral waters, and we chose the best wines from all over Europe and South America," Savarese explained. "They're not too expensive and not too cheap — we start at $20 and go up to $45 or $50 a bottle. "The food though, it's all Italian. 99.99% Italian. We have fresh mozzarella, ricotta, caciocavallo, pecorino Romano, we have parmesan. I buy all these fresh. "We have wine, we have cheese, and we have pasta, pasta, pasta. We have a dry pasta and fresh-made pasta. We have two types of flatbread. It's crispy, it's beautiful because it's not like normal flatbread — it's different and is a specialty from Roma." At the restaurant, as a painter, as a designer, Savarese puts all of himself into his work, and it's easy to see when you visit Sasa Italian Gourmet. "In any work in my life, my hand is my soul," he asserted. "At Sasa Italian Gourmet, my concept is Soul Amore. My concept is me giving you something special because it is something that I would make for myself." "However, being prepared with the right remedies, listening to your body and its symptoms and remaining diligent with a healthy routine is just as important as treating symptoms head on." To help navigate this Cough, Cold and Flu Season, consider these tips from Tiutan and the experts at Mucinex. Prepare And Prevent You won't find a foolproof way to keep germs away, but you can lessen your chances of getting sick and make sure you're equipped to weather an illness. • Practice healthy habits. Keeping your body in prime condition can help ensure you're in the best condition possible to fight back when germs attack. That means keeping up with exercise and ensuring you're getting enough Vitamins and Nutrients through a well-balanced diet. • Get a Flu Shot. Although colds are inconvenient, they are far less likely to develop into anything more serious, as the flu can. What is a Cold? Generally, colds are milder than the flu, and more likely to cause runny or stuffy noses (while the flu can cause stuffy or runny noses, it's less likely to do so). You won't feel good, but you'll probably be able to do some or all of your daily tasks. The Flu typically hits harder, making it difficult to go to work or follow your usual routine. What is the Flu? Stephen Cummings Receives Award June 8, 2021 Share Stephen Cummings receives an award from Key Club LT Governor Shana Xia from American Heritage High School for his philanthropy toward the key clubs in Broward County Stephen Cummings, has been an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach since its inception, in 1994. He has served Kiwanis in many capacities and chartered the Hallandale High School Key Club in 2003, watching many young adults blossom through community service. In 2010, an award was established in his name recognizing the most philanthropic Kiwanis member in Broward County who assisted students with service projects, district convention expenses and college scholarships. In 2017, he absorbed the entire cost of chartering eight luxury buses, enabling 400 Key Club members and faculty advisors to travel at his expense to their State Convention, in Orlando. He has frequently purchased pizza, chicken wings and cheese platters for meetings, so the students enjoyed some nourishment and has purchased hundreds of club shirts for Key Club members at Hallandale High School. Cummings has watched many of his Hallandale High School Key Club members flourish, but is most proud of Past Club President, Sabrina Javellana, who, became the youngest Hallandale Beach City Commissioner in 2018, at the ripe old age of twenty and former, standout member, Noemi Lopez, who, has become a filmmaker, she is producing and directing, she has been forming her own company. It has been a great honor for Stephen, to be presented with an award with his namesake for 2020-2021, for his continued financial support of our aspiring youths, in Broward County. The Kiwanis Name The name “Kiwanis” means “we trade” or “we share our talents.” It was coined from an American Indian expression, Nunc Kee-wanis. Kiwanians are volunteers changing the world through service to children and communities. Kiwanis members help shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, mentor the disadvantaged, and care for the sick.
