Stand Against Hunger: Food Shouldn’t Be an Impossible Choice

August 25, 2022

For many, a daily meal is a simple choice of what to eat. But for people facing hunger, a daily meal poses a very different type of choice. It’s often an impossible choice between food or other crucial needs, such as electricity, childcare or medicine. Make the choice to participate in Hunger Action Month in September and together we can eliminate hunger.

Hunger Action Month is a time dedicated to raising awareness of the hunger crisis nationwide. In South Florida approximately one million individuals face hunger and have no idea where their next meal is coming from. This includes nearly 500,000 children and seniors. Food shouldn’t be an impossible choice. Feeding South Florida works to make food available and accessible to those who need it most. Join fellow South Floridians during Hunger Action Month to take a stand against hunger by sharing, volunteering, donating, fundraising and other actions to draw attention to this critical issue.

Feeding South Florida experienced an unprecedented increase in providing nutritious food to over 1.1 million individuals due to inflation, the strained supply chain, rising fuel prices, increased housing costs and other factors stemming from the COVID-19 Pandemic.

“The community’s support comes at a crucial time, when the demand for food has increased significantly due to inflation at its highest in 13 years and rising food costs,” said Paco Vélez, President and CEO of Feeding South Florida. “Hunger Action Month is a great opportunity for the community to be a part of a month-long initiative that has a real and lasting impact on our mission of ending hunger in South Florida. We are proud to serve the South Florida community for over 40 years and will continue to do whatever it takes to provide access to nutritious food, tools and education for economic growth throughout Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties.”

To commemorate Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative created by Feeding America® to inspire action toward ending hunger in the United States, Feeding South Florida will unveil the winning artwork from its third annual “Feed Your Creativity” Art Competition. Artwork by Caeden Khouri, a sixth grader at Coral Springs Charter School, will be displayed as a truck wrap on one of its 36-foot tractor-trailers that travels throughout Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties.

Feeding South Florida of Pembroke Park will offer a range of events and activities to encourage South Floridians to get involved and “go orange,” the color and call to action of Feeding South Florida. Monetary donations go further during September with the Delta Air Lines one-to-one match up to $25,000. This year’s theme is “Food Shouldn’t Be an Impossible Choice.” During Hunger Action Month, South Floridians can help in many ways including:
