January 26, 2024
Miami New Drama is thrilled to present the upcoming production of 'Two Sisters and a Piano', a riveting play written and directed by Nilo Cruz, the Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author of ‘Anna In The Tropics.’ This extraordinary tale of courage and survival is set in 1991 Havana and is slated to run at the Colony Theatre on Lincoln Road from January 25th, 2024 to February 18th, 2024.
‘Two Sisters and a Piano’ takes place in the wake of the Soviet bloc’s collapse. The play follows the story of two women held in captivity for defying an oppressive system, and a lieutenant who comes from a world of strict militarism. But what begins as a dangerous life-threatening scenario slowly turns into something compelling, as the lines between politics and intimacy converge, invoking a world of escape through love and art.
Variety Magazine has already hailed the play “as open as a Havana landscape, with all of its flavors, scents, and sensory overloads at full tilt.”
Nilo Cruz, renowned for his work 'Anna in the Tropics,' brings this compelling narrative to the stage, one that resonates with themes of freedom, resilience, and the human spirit. His direction promises to immerse the audience in an intimate, emotionally charged experience.
“We are honored to bring Nilo Cruz’s vision to life at the Colony Theatre,” said Michel Hausmann, Artistic Director of Miami New Drama. “This play is not just a story; it's a journey through the struggles and dreams that define the human experience, particularly in the context of recent Cuban history.”
The play’s cast features performances by Thais Menendez, a TV, Film and theater actress, as Maria Cela and Stephanie Machado, a former co-star on CBS’s “Evil” as Sofia. Their portrayals of the sisters are expected to be both powerful and poignant. Maurice Compte, known for his roles as Gaff in Breaking Bad, Santiago "Big Evil" Flores in End of Watch, and Colonel Carrillo in Narcos will be portraying Lieutenant Portundo. Gabriell Salgado, who was recently awarded a 'Best Actor in a Male Role' award from the Miami New Times: Miami's Best Of' series for his work in Red Speedo, El Huracan and Anna In The Tropics, will portray Manuel Vincent.
The creative team includes Director/Playwright Nilo Cruz, Associate Director Samantha Pazos, Scenic Designers Christopher Swader and Justin Swader, Costume Designer Michiko Skinner Kitayama, Assistant Costume Designer Nico Walker, Lighting Designers David Lander and Leo Urbina, Original Music and Sound Designer Salomon Lerner, and Fight Director Lee Soroko.
