Hollywood Celebrates Black History Month

The City of Hollywood is celebrating Black History Month with several events happening to commemorate the month. ArtsPark Friday Night Movie - A free movie begins at 8:00 p.m. every Friday at ArtsPark at Young Circle, located at US-1 and Hollywood Boulevard. Bring a blanket or chair for lawn seating. Be sure to bring your reusable containers, as this venue is plastic-free.

Black History Month Series:
• Friday, February 9th – I Wanna Dance with Somebody
• Friday, February 16th – CREED III
• Friday, February 23rd – The Great Debaters

On Sunday, February 11th, the Hollywood Historical Society’s lecture series features the North Woodland Park Cemetery, which was the First African-American Cemetery in Broward County. The Speaker is Roberto Fernandez from Broward Trust. The event takes place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Stirling Road Branch Library at 3151 Stirling Road in Hollywood.

Hollywood’s African American Advisory Council is hosting an event on Thursday, February 22nd at 6:00 p.m. at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center. The program will include a fashion show, dance performances, drumming, poetry and more.

Also, be sure to check out the photo gallery on the second floor of Hollywood City Hall highlighting prominent leaders in Black history. The “Celebrating Black History Month” display will be up the entire month of February.


Hollywood Beach Sweep 
Join volunteers Saturday, February 10th from 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. to gather to collect litter and cigarette butts from the sandy beach. This event happens every second Saturday of the month.

Volunteers meet at Charnow Park at Garfield Street and the Broadwalk, at 7:00 a.m. Please complete the registration form available on the City’s website at www.hollywoodfl.org. Children ages 8 and older are welcome to participate when accompanied by an adult. Gloves and garbage bags will be provided to all volunteers along with safety instructions. Please dress appropriately, wear sunscreen and bring completed registration form. Don't forget, plastic water bottles are prohibited on Hollywood Beach, so bring a reusable water bottle instead.
