- Passover Seder 101: Does Your Bread Have An Ego?
Passover Seder 101: Does Your Bread Have An Ego? By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil March 23, 2023 Share The Eight-Day Festival of Passover is celebrated this year from sundown on Wednesday evening, April 5th, 2023, until after nightfall on Thursday, April 13th, 2023, with its highlight, the festive “Seder” dinners on the first 2 nights of the holiday. The Festival of Passover commemorates the freedom of the Jewish nation from enslavement in Ancient Egypt, some 3,335 years ago, in 1313 BCE. After many decades of slavery to the Egyptian Pharaohs, G‑d sent Moses to Pharaoh with a message to: “Let My People Go.” When Moses’ warnings were dismissed, G‑d sent upon Egypt ten plagues, the last one being the killing of the Egyptian firstborn while “passing over” the Jewish homes—hence the name of the holiday. To commemorate the unleavened bread that we ate when we left Egypt, we don’t eat—or even retain in our possession—any leavened grains known as Chametz during the holiday. Chametz includes any food or drink that contains even a trace of wheat, barley, rye, oats, spelt or their derivatives and which wasn’t guarded from leavening or fermentation. Instead, we eat Matzah—flat unleavened bread, at least for the two Seder nights, when it's a Mitzvah (biblical commandment). Our Rabbis explain that Chametz is symbolic of haughtiness and egotism - traits so harmful that they are at the root of all negative traits. This is one of the reasons why even the most miniscule amount of Chametz is forbidden - for these negative traits must be completely nullified. Few Jewish holidays evoke the same warm sentiments as Passover. Memories of family and friends gathered as the four cups of wine are poured, the four questions asked and the Matzah served, all contribute to Passover’s popularity in the Jewish community. Bringing the warmth and tradition of this festival to every major city in the world, Chabad is inviting all Jewish residents and visitors to participate in Community Seders to be held on Wednesday, April 5th, 2023 and Thursday, April 6th, 2023 at locations throughout South Florida. This year’s observance will be even more special as Jews around the world celebrate the year of Hakhel. The Hakhel year takes place every seven years, following the Shemita sabbatical year. In temple times it was celebrated by all Jewish people - men, women and children - coming together to Jerusalem and hearing the Torah read by the king. He would then inspire everyone to continue acting in a proper way, befitting for the Jewish people. Today Hakhel is celebrated simply by Jewish people getting together. In lieu of the king, we try to inspire each other. How much more so when coming together for an inspirational Seder. The Passover Seder is a feast that includes reading, drinking wine, telling stories, eating special foods, singing and other Passover traditions. The central observance of Passover—eating Matzah, the unleavened bread—will take center stage at the Seder, with handmade round Shmurah Matzah, “The Rolls-Royce of Matzah,” available to all. The Seders take participants through the wondrous liberation of our ancestors from Egyptian bondage, while sharing the relevance and beauty of the age-old festival in our modern lives. Included in the Seder will be a delectable catered dinner paired with a variety of fine imported wines and handmade round 'Shmurah' Matzah. Passover is not simply a celebration of the historic liberation of an ancient people. Passover is about our own personal liberation – physically, emotionally and spiritually, a message that rings true this year perhaps more than ever before in our lifetimes as we still face the challenges of the Pandemic. Passover inspires us to break free from the shackles restraining us from reaching new heights – in our lives, relationships and connection with G-d. Chabad's Community Seder is part of a Global Passover Campaign that began in 1954, when the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, launched the Shmurah Matzah initiative. This year, over 600,000 people will participate at Seder at over 4,000 Chabad Centers throughout the world and an estimated four million hand-baked Shmurah Matzahs will be distributed. We encourage you to contact your local Chabad or Synagogue to join the Seder nearest you. You are of course welcome to join us at our Seder in Highland Lakes. - Parking In Hallandale Beach | sun-times
Parking In Hallandale Beach By Hallandale Beach, Mayor Joy Cooper May 29, 2025 Many Residents Have Been Asking About Parking And Enforcement Lately. There Are A Few Rules That Will Apply, And Many Get Into Trouble By Parking In The Wrong Area. On The Street Parking Is Only Allowed In Designated Areas. Paid On-Street Parking Obviously Is Marked And Everyone Must Pay For Parking On The Spot. I Often Get, “I Was Only There For A Few Minutes.” What has changed is all parking is electronic now. With the electronic App our Parking Enforcement is also done electronically. Parking Enforcement vehicles are equipped with License Plate Readers. They read the plate and if the owner has not paid, the officer is automatically notified and they in turn issue a Citation. The Citation process is also online. You can review the ticket and pay online. Obviously, tickets can be challenged but it is rare they are overturned. Our officers do not simply enforce paid parking; they enforce parking throughout the city. Parking within our neighborhoods has become an issue. Residential areas, due to state law, have been inundated with vacation rentals and at home businesses. In the past, rentals were allowed but now they are like hotels daily. Worse, some have become party homes. Homes were allowed in the past to have an office but now that has expanded to allow a business with customers. The business cannot be the entire home. Many municipalities tried to fight these exemptions but failed. The way we can address those adverse impacts is through various code rules which include parking requirements. We have not changed the requirements; we are simply now enforcing what we have had in books. Single Family Homes are required to typically be built with two parking spaces or one with a garage. Parking or storing vehicles on unimproved areas or lots is prohibited. If there is a sidewalk the space between the sidewalk and the street is swale. Some swales are simply grass and overtime have been asphalted. Parking can be done in the area but cannot block that sidewalk. If it is just all asphalt and no sidewalk parking depends on the width and location of the property line. Some neighborhoods have no sidewalks at all. In these cases, if you have a visitor or a family gathering, if a car is parked in the driveway or the grass swale and not blocking the street enforcement will allow temporary parking. As you can see, in some cases it is clear as mud. Many of our Single-Family areas were built at various times so in these cases our staff is trying to give some leeway. It is on a case by case basis, and our Parking Supervisor Harvey Figueroa will review them. While Parking Enforcement is going around every area of our City and will issue tickets in most cases in Single Family neighborhoods it is because of a complaint, or the street is being blocked creating an unsafe situation. Another parking issue that comes up is at condominiums when they need to perform work outside of the building or on their own parking facility. In most cases, the building supervisor will try to accommodate construction by temporarily assigning vacant spots or requesting residents to park in someone else’s spot that is not in use. In the event these options cannot be exercised the building can request temporary swale and or On-Street Parking. With our new parking system, the cars that will be parked on the swale or on the street spot, each car needs to pay for and register in the system. This is typically a $30-dollar fee per car. This gives staff a way to monitor if cars are to be there. If not, the car will be ticketed. If you have any questions about our parking program and policies, please visit our new and improved Website. Staff have compiled a full Neighborhood Enhancement Program Presentation on our Code Enforcement’s Site. Visit: www.cohb.org and search “Code Enforcement.” As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. - ‘Gender Affirming’ What Does That Mean for A Child?
‘Gender Affirming’ What Does That Mean for A Child? By Jane M. Orient, M.D. September 1, 2022 Share The Biden Administration is planning to reinstate rules withdrawn by the Trump Administration that add Gender Identity to Nondiscrimination Protections. It would also expand requirements to include any providers who accept Medicare Part B. It’s not altogether clear what this will mean. There is no evidence that Transgender or Gender-Nonconforming Persons are failing to get Prenatal Care or delivery of babies, treatment for Heart Attacks, Gall Bladder Surgery, Trauma Care, or other types of care that all types of patients might need — though it is possible that some Caregivers might use the “wrong” pronouns. The issue seems to be “Gender-Affirming” Care. Physicians might be pressured to provide care they think is morally objectionable or harmful to a patient. This was the reason why the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) objected to the rule in the first place. But exactly what kind of care? Language is the tool we use for thinking and the meaning of words is critically important. “Affirming” sounds like a good thing, a positive thing. It’s replacing the term “sex change.” Unarguably, it is impossible to change the Biological Sex, to switch out the Y or the Second X Chromosome present in every cell of a person’s body. Also, advocates claim that people “know” themselves “really” to be of a Gender different from the one “assigned at birth,” so the Gender is essentially not being changed. Puberty confirms and exhibits Biologic Sex, but in Newspeak this is not called “affirming.” After going through natural Puberty, the vast majority of Gender-Confused Children accept the Biological Reality that their bodies constantly manifest. So, many Transgender Activists insist that “affirming” therapy must be started before Puberty, using a Puberty Blocker such as Lupron™ (Leuprolide). It works by stopping production of the Pituitary Hormones that tell the Testicles to make Testosterone or the Ovaries to make Estrogen. Its main approved use is in Cancer Chemotherapy. It is also used in Infertility treatments and to delay precocious Puberty. Using it to suppress normal Puberty is an unapproved, “off-label” use. Lupron has numerous severe adverse effects. It stops the maturation of Sex Cells and may result in Sterility. It stunts growth and reduces Bone Density, among other consequences. It is not a harmless on-off switch that can delay a child’s development to give the child time to “explore” Gender Identity. While it may prevent or diminish irreversible changes such as a deepening voice, it causes its own, probably irreversible changes in many bodily systems. The next step is Cross-Sex Hormones to “affirm” (cause), the development of some secondary Sex Characteristics of the Nonbiologic Gender, such as Facial Hair, Voice Changes and Breast Development. But Sex Hormones are not magic potions; many characteristics of the Biological Sex will persist despite years of therapy. The next and clearly irreversible step is Surgery. Surgery does not affirm body parts. Surgery merely removes functional organs and replaces them with non-functional imperfect replicas. For example, a skin-covered wound that requires constant dilatation to remain open will never have the functionality of Female Genitalia. Transgender Extremists may try to steer a child into this course, even without the knowledge or consent of a Parent. Female-to-Male Transgender people might enjoy showing off their “top surgery”—if they had extremely expensive Cosmetic Surgery. If they haven’t, they will not look like the models shown on the internet, but will simply have a flat, deeply scarred, female-sized chest. How many surgeons explain the possible Urinary problems? Some patients will have to spend 10 minutes emptying their Bladder and will constantly drip Urine. “Bottom Surgery” is complex, painful and fraught with complications, while its results are typically far from the wishful expectations. Are these interventions “affirming” – or denying? Biological Women are denied their prospects for Femininity. They can lose their smooth skin, their Breasts, their beautiful Soprano singing Voice and their ability to bear children. They are likely to permanently lose their attractiveness to men who desire a lifelong Female partner, wife and mother. Biological Men are denied their full height and strength, their Potency, Fertility and attractiveness to Women who desire a lifelong Male partner, protector and father to their children. Post “Transition” they will probably still have a distinctly Male Bone Structure and other typically coarser Male features. “Affirmative Treatment” negates the ability to experience intimacy in relationships in the way that normal Women or normal Men do. All patients will need lifelong Medical Care—continuous Hormones and management of adverse effects. But will the “Affirmed” people be happy with their identity and less likely to commit Suicide? We have very little long-term follow-up and for now well-funded Woke Activists are in control of Research, Treatment and are in a position to punish or cancel all Non-Affirming opinions. “Affirming” a delusion and denying reality can only lead to harm. This article has been published Online by the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons at: https://aapsonline.org/what-does-gender-affirming-mean-for-your-child/ Gender-Affirming Care, Defined According To The Department of Health & Human Services Office of Population Affairs Gender-Affirming Care is a supportive form of Healthcare. It consists of an array of services that may include: Medical, Surgical, Mental Health and Non-Medical Services for Transgender and Non-Binary people. For Transgender and Non-Binary Children and Adolescents, Early Gender-Affirming Care is crucial to overall health and well-being as it allows the child or adolescent to focus on social transitions and can increase their confidence while navigating the Healthcare System. The Album Marks The Group’s First Full-Length Release Under Afro Roots Recordings, Solidifying Their Reputation As One Of The Region's Most Spirited And Sought-After Acts. With nine original compositions, The Guajiro Triangle takes listeners on a rich, sonic journey tracing Cuban Son's evolution – from its roots in Santiago de Cuba to its electrifying presence in Miami, with Havana serving as the essential bridge. The album opens with "Aquí Te Traigo Mi Son," a heartfelt homage featuring celebrated Cuban Pianist and Composer Michelle Fragoso. This vibrant track paints a vivid picture of the Son’s origins in the eastern Cuban countryside, setting the stage for the rest of the album’s exploration. Cortadito honors its Cuban heritage with powerful songs like the poignant opening single "A Yemayá," featuring Latin GRAMMY-Winning Flutist Nestor Torres. Another standout is "Guajira en la Madrugada," a Bolero Son collaboration with GRAMMY and Latin GRAMMY Award-Winner Aymeé Nuviola, celebrating Cuba’s natural beauty. - Calling All Big Dog Lovers: You'll Fall In Love With These Big Boys
Calling All Big Dog Lovers: You'll Fall In Love With These Big Boys November 17, 2023 Share Calling all big dog lovers...can Bella (ID 674393) or Scrappy (ID 672002) go home with you? Beautiful Bella would love to go home with you! This sandy, blonde beauty is 73 pounds, 11 months-old and still has some growing to do. Sadly, she was given up because she got too big. Bella is good with other dogs and enjoys playing with dogs her size. Her profile says she is also good with cats, so please do a slow introduction if you have a resident feline. Older kids might be best, we wouldn’t want her to knock down any little ones by accident. Bella can be a little shy at first but give her a few minutes and she warms up and wants to play. Would she be a good fit for your family? Scrappy is an adorable fellow and can’t wait to meet you at the Humane Society of Broward County. Scrappy is a friendly, five-year-old, 72-pound fellow who loves to be petted and hang out with people. The volunteers and staff at the Humane Society of Broward County say he is affectionate, curious, and calm. If you’re looking for a walking partner… he could be perfect for you. A family with older kids might be best, he wouldn’t want to accidentally knock over any little kids. If you have a dog at home, a dog meet would be recommended. It appears Scrappy is not that into toys, he prefers to be where you are and rest his head in your lap. Thanks to our friends at Buy Fire Alarm Parts, they have kindly paid Scrappy’s adoption fee. Could you be the perfect family for Scrappy? If a big feline is your thing than five-year-old Kimura (Kimmy) ID 674446 is a BIG lap cat, who loves attention and pets. She is good with well-mannered dogs, is talkative when she sees you, and she will do best in a home with kids ages 8 and up. Kimura is front declawed. Preparing to Adopt If you lease your home, check with your landlord before adopting to be sure you are allowed to have a pet and can afford all required pet deposits. Pets are sometimes returned because of lease restrictions and/or landlord’s disapproval of the pet chosen. This can be an expensive lesson since the adoption fees are non-refundable and being returned to the shelter can be a stressful experience for the animal. Adopting a pet is not a one person decision. Make sure other members of your household are aware you want to add a pet and should meet the pet before you decide to adopt. Also consider: • Does anyone have allergies? • Are other members of the household, including children, afraid of animals? • Are you expecting other members of the household to share in the care of the pet? Another factor to consider is cost. The initial and on-going costs of a new pet can add up. These costs include: Adoption fees, Food, Grooming, Obedience training, Pet supplies, and Licensing. Additional veterinary care such as diagnostic testing and preventative medication can add up in the future, so make sure to take this all under consideration prior to adopting. These costs can easily be $200-400 or more within the first few weeks of adoption. Other Pets The Humane Society of Broward County recommends that you do not immediately expose your existing pets to a new pet. Consider how you will manage an isolation period and be sure all existing pets are up to date on vaccinations and other routine health care before bringing a new pet home. Facilitating positive pet-to-pet introductions will require some management on your part too. Not all pets are instant friends and may require temporary or intermittent separation to ensure a smooth transition. Some pets are happy to share their home within a week or two, others may take a month or longer to adjust. Our adoption staff will be happy to review steps to properly introduce your new pet to your resident pets. Time commitment All dogs and cats making the transition to a new home will need time to adjust to a new family and may require house training and behavior training to correct problem behavior. If you aren’t prepared to invest your time to teach your new pet appropriate behavior and help the animal adjust, you should not consider adopting a pet at this time. Positive reinforcement-based training is recommended for all newly adopted dogs and puppies. Please make a lifetime commitment to your pet. Remember that the animal you choose has already been abandoned or unwanted at least once in its life. Dogs and cats may live 12 to 15 years or more. Your thoughtful consideration, preparation and commitment will help ensure a lifelong placement. Supplies Before bringing your dog, cat, or critter home, make sure you have the supplies to properly care for the newest member of your household. From toys and leashes to treats and litter pans, the adoption centers have a wide variety of merchandise available for purchase. Their knowledgeable staff can help you find the right products for your pet during the adoption interview process. To meet Bella, Scrappy, Kimura, or any other pet and fill out the Pre-Adoption Application, please visit: www.humanebroward.com - Appointments are not necessary, so stop by the Humane Society of Broward County located at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312. The Adoption Department opens daily at 11:00 a.m. If you have questions, call: (954) 989-3977. Extension#: 6. < Previous News Next News >
- New Data Reveals Which States Are Dangerously Overspending On Consumer Purchases – Is Yours One of Them? | sun-times
New Data Reveals Which States Are Dangerously Overspending On Consumer Purchases – Is Yours One of Them? Sam Bourgi Dec 25, 2025 An Analysis Of Spending Patterns Reveals Differences In How Americans Shop Across Different States, With Some Regions Showing Spending Increases That Far Outpace Income Growth And Signal Potential Financial Danger For Millions Of Households. The research from InvestorsObserver, examining nearly three decades of consumer data, found that while nationwide spending on durable goods increased by 90% since 1997, certain states have seen explosive growth exceeding 600% in the category of telephone and related communication equipment. The study analyzed state-by-state spending data from 1997 to 2024, credit card balance trends, and shifts in consumer purchasing patterns. This allows for identifying which states may be courting financial trouble through unsustainable shopping habits. The States Where Spending Has Exploded The research identifies several states where spending growth strongly exceeds national averages. Multiple states show more than 600% growth in durable goods spending since 1997, with communication equipment and electronics spending surging over 600% in top states: North Carolina 672%, North Dakota 648%, Washington 645%, and South Dakota 614%. “These numbers represent real financial risk for families,” says Sam Bourgi, a Finance Analyst at InvestorsObserver. “When spending growth outpaces income growth by this magnitude, it’s almost always fueled by debt, and that’s a dangerous game to play.” This Might Be the Credit Card Crisis The research found that average credit card balances at major issuers including American Express, Discover, and Capital One have grown at 0.5% monthly since 2020. This translates to approximately 6% per year, with pronounced spikes during the Black Friday season. “What we’re seeing is a storm,” warns Bourgi. “Easy credit, aggressive seasonal marketing, and social pressure to keep up with spending in high-growth states. This can eventually lead to financial difficulties.” A Cultural Shift in Consumer Behavior “The shift from buying a car or jewelry – items that last for years – to constantly upgrading phones and electronics creates a perpetual spending cycle,” explains Bourgi. “In states where this pattern is most pronounced, we’re seeing households trapped in endless upgrade cycles they can’t afford.” The data reveals a huge divide in shopping habits across America. California leading in total durable goods purchases pump billions into the economy but show concerning debt accumulation patterns. Meanwhile, other states have actually reduced spending in certain categories, with some showing 10% to 16% declines in jewelry, watches, and vehicle purchases. “The states pulling back on traditional luxury items might actually be the smart ones,” notes Bourgi. “They’re avoiding status symbol purchases that depreciate quickly.” Post-Pandemic Spending Surge The 2020 to 2024 period had a strong growth in spending across multiple states. North Carolina tops the list with an 18% change from 2020 till 2024 (inflation adjusted), and is followed by Nevada (16%), and Texas (16%). “The pandemic created a pressure cooker effect,” Bourgi explains. “Pent-up demand, stimulus money, and changed lifestyles led to explosive spending growth that’s simply not sustainable. We’re now seeing the consequences as credit card balances climb and savings rates plummet.” Geographic Patterns of Financial Risk Bourgi has identified several warning signs that indicate when state-level spending patterns suggest widespread overspending. If a state’s credit card spending has grown more than three times the national average, when credit card balance growth exceeds 6% annually, when spending concentrates heavily in rapidly depreciating categories like electronics, or when spending growth strongly exceeds median income growth, residents should be particularly cautious. “Knowing your state’s spending patterns is crucial for making smart decisions,” advises Bourgi. “If you’re in a high-spending state, you need to be extra vigilant about not getting swept up in the frenzy.” The Cost of Keeping Up The research highlights how credit card interest can quickly erase any savings through seasonal discounts during Black Friday and Christmas. Various surveys show that consumers can spend months, if not more, paying off holiday debts. If a consumer carries a balance at a 20% annual percentage rate, the interest accrued in just 18 months will erase the benefit of an initial 30% discount. “The most expensive thing you can buy on Black Friday is the illusion that you need to match your state’s spending trends,” warns Bourgi. “Our data shows clear geographic patterns in overspending that suggest social pressure plays a huge role in driving dangerous financial behavior.” Expert Recommendations for Consumers According to Bourgi, awareness is the first step toward financial safety. “If your state’s spending has grown 600%, that doesn’t mean yours should too,” he says, and recommends that consumers in high-risk states consider a cash-only strategy for seasonal shopping and focus on needs rather than wants. The data shows people are abandoning necessities for wants. “Reversing that trend is crucial for financial health. This allows you to shop smart regardless of what your neighbors are doing,” explains Bourgi. About the Research Researchers from InvestorsObserver analyzed American shopping trends over the past three decades. The focus was on state-by-state and national sales data for durable goods, credit card transaction volumes, and shifts in consumer spending across key product categories like electronics, appliances, furniture, sporting goods, and jewelry. The Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) data was collected from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Monthly credit loan issuance data (2018–2025) for American Express, Discover, and Capital One was pulled from Bloomberg. Then, the researchers calculated how expenditures had changed over time (1997–2024). All calculations are inflation-adjusted. - Honoring The Past & Making Changes For The Future
Honoring The Past & Making Changes For The Future By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper October 7, 2021 Share Fellow commissioners and friends paid final respects to former Hallandale Beach Vice Mayor Bill Julian this past weekend. Vice Mayor Julian was the longest serving Vice Mayor in the City’s History, funeral Services & Memorial were held this past Saturday. Services were held at St. Matthews Catholic Church. Following the mass, The Celebration of Life proceeded to the Veteran’s Memorial at Hallandale Beach City Hall where the honor guard paid tribute to Bill's three tours of military service and a wreath was placed next to a memorial brick in his honor, refreshments followed at the American Legion Post 310. In tribute to Bill, donations can be made in honor of his life service and can be made payable to the American Legion Post 310: American Legion Post 310: 225 Southeast 1st Avenue Hallandale Beach, Florida 33009. This past Saturday there was a beautiful mass held at St. Matthew’s Church to celebrate the life of Vice Mayor Bill Julian. Former Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Adams arranged the mass and her granddaughter Sabrina Adams-Oliveras delivered a beautiful eulogy. I was honored to share a message as well. After mass a dedication was held at our Veterans Memorial with the Hallandale ROTC presenting the colors. Many of Bill's friends gathered at the American Legion Post 310, where Commander Ed Pickett made a beautiful historical speech about Bill's rich history in Hallandale Beach. I would like to thank Joy Adams on behalf of the City, the many friends that gathered to honor Bill and he will be missed by many. Chief Sonia Quiñones Retiring: Last week our City Manager received the retirement request from Chief Quiñones, who was made Chief in Transition on September 24th and Deputy Chief Michel Michel was appointed Chief. Chief Quiñones has been with the City for over 28 years. She rose through the ranks as a Sergeant, a Captain, a Major and was made Chief 4 years ago. Throughout her tenure she established many new initiatives and programs to reduce crime. She served as a DEA Agent at one time performing many undercover operations. She will not be formally retired until October 29th, 2021. Dr. Jeremy Earle will be conducting a national search to find a new Chief. Update on our Building Department: Over the past weeks our City Manager has hired Mrs. Shellie Jackson as our Head Building Official. Mrs. Jackson was our building official when City Manager Renee Miller was overseeing our day-to-day operations. We are very fortunate to have her back. The department has expanded to address implementation of the 40 year inspection enforcements. In partnership with the IT Department, we have adapted newer technology to streamline our online application process even further. Due to the increase in staffing our department has been split between the City Hall and the Annex at our Fire Station on Northwest 1st Avenue and Foster Road. The department is open now at the City Hall from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. We do encourage applicants to make an appointment if necessary. Our online system does allow for full access to all of the documents and comments for the status of permits. There is an easy portal where constituents can put in the permit number to find and follow the status. Applicants can upload documents and respond to comments. It is important to note that all contractors should be well versed in the process and of all requirements applicable to the permit itself. South Florida Building Codes are the same as other jurisdictions other than the rule starting with hurricane building standards. Please note that permits do take time. If permits are not filed with even the simplest of information, such as: contractor certifications, insurance and business licenses will hold up the application process. They will receive a denied response and enter it back into the cycle. My colleagues and I have been answering many calls about building permits requests. In these cases I have filled them in most of the time, this is due to the lack of documentation. When this happens, it can set back the applicant for weeks. The typical cycle has been three weeks, but it is actually 12 twelve working days. Our City Hall is open from Monday to Thursday. I will be hosting a Town Hall Zoom Meeting to introduce our new official, the new systems and discuss the 40 year inspection process within the month. As we approach the holidays, many non-profit organizations are having difficulty securing turkeys for their giveaway events. I received a call from Joe Rodrigues from Rodriguez Charites. They are always extremely generous for those in need and typically sponsor a large turkey giveaway at the Cheetah Club here in Hallandale Beach. While they cannot provide a giveaway, he has generously donated the funds so they could be used at our Hepburn Center to supplement our feeding program. Due to COVID-19, we will not be hosting an in person dinner but we will be providing drive through meals, the date, time and details will be forthcoming. As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns and ideas to make our City, a better place, on my phone/text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can e-mail me at: jcooper@cohb.org Please visit my Facebook Page: MayorJoyCooper. Like It! Friend It! Share It! < Previous News Next News >

- Get Up & Get Dancing: The City of Aventura Offers An Opportunity For Better Health
Get Up & Get Dancing: The City of Aventura Offers An Opportunity For Better Health March 18, 2022 Share The City will be offering complimentary Zumba classes to Aventura residents of all ages starting in March and running every Thursday. The new Zumba program will include a certified Zumba instructor teaching this fun fitness class involving aerobic movement and Latin dance. Participants should be ready to bring a positive mood, have fun and bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated. Cost: FREE When: Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Where: Founders Park 3105 NE 190 St. Benefits of Zumba Designed as a combination of salsa and aerobics, there’s no right or wrong way to do Zumba. As long as you move to the beat of the music, you’re participating in the exercise. And since Zumba involves movement of the entire body — from your arms to your shoulders and to your feet — you’ll get a full-body workout that doesn’t feel like work. A small study found that a standard, 39-minute Zumba class burned an average of 9.5 calories per minute. This adds up to 369 calories in total throughout the class. The American Council on Exercise recommends that individuals burn 300 calories per workout in order to promote weight loss and maintain a healthy bodyweight. Zumba fits their criteria perfectly. Evidence also shows that a 12-week Zumba program can provide significant improvements in aerobic fitness. Also, since music played during a Zumba class is relatively fast-paced, moving to the beat can help build your endurance after just a few workouts. You may not realize this but while doing Zumba, your mind and body work quite hard to make sure your movements follow the fast beats of the music and that your steps are aligned with others who are also dancing around you. Regular practice of Zumba boosts your mind-body coordination. Zumba is fast, intense, and rigorous. And Zumba is fun also. This is one of the main reasons why people who practice Zumba keep going back to it. They look forward to attending the class so they can dance away to the music along with their friends and family. Zumba also presents you with opportunities to socialize and make new friends. Registration Aventura residents of all ages welcome, registration is open and spots are limited. All participants must be registered prior to attending. Registration can be completed exclusively online only with a valid and existing account at cityofaventura.com/ors. For more information, visit cityofaventura.com or contact Founders Park at 305-466-0183 or parksrec@cityofaventura.com .
