Have People's Perceptions Changed? Three Florida Retreats Emerge As Top Choices For Vacation Home Buyers

September 5, 2024

The Hamptons, Miami Beach, and Malibu have long been dream vacation destinations for many aspiring vacation homeowners. However, with large parts of America having experienced unrelenting heatwaves, Agent Advice, a real estate resources website, wanted to explore whether people's perceptions of ideal vacation home locations have changed. Traditionally coveted beach destinations may now be less desirable due to Global Warming and recent extreme heat, prompting a shift in preference towards cooler locales.

They ran a survey of 3,000 Americans to determine the most sought-after cooler destinations where people now aspire to own vacation homes. The top 10 were as follows:

#1 Aspen, Colorado

Nestled in the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 8,000 feet, Aspen emerged top as the most coveted location for vacation homes. This winter wonderland turned year-round retreat offers a diverse array of properties, from opulent mountain estates to charming ski chalets. Aspen's allure lies not only in its luxurious amenities but also in its refreshing summer climate and world-class outdoor activities.

#2 Big Bear Lake, California

In second place, Big Bear Lake features a variety of vacation properties, including rustic cabins, modern homes, and charming cottages. Many properties come with large decks, hot tubs, and stunning views of the lake or surrounding mountains. Located in the San Bernardino Mountains, Big Bear Lake enjoys cooler temperatures during summer due to its high elevation.

Homer, ranked third, offers diverse vacation properties. This Alaskan gem features an assortment of unique properties, including off-grid wilderness cabins and elegant waterfront homes. Homer's moderate maritime climate and endless summer days make it an ideal escape for those seeking adventure and tranquility.

Florida had 2 other sought-after cool weather locations for owning a vacation property:

#65 Lake Wales Ridge

Lake Wales Ridge offers a variety of vacation properties including charming cottages, modern homes, and ranch-style houses. Properties often feature large yards, scenic views of the rolling hills, and proximity to local lakes.
