- Your Vote, Your Voice - A Message From The Vice Mayor of Sunny Isles Beach
Your Vote, Your Voice - A Message From The Vice Mayor of Sunny Isles Beach By Alex Lama, Vice Mayor - www.sibfl.net October 18, 2024 Share The general election will be on November 5. Voters will not only decide who will be our next president, but also cast their votes for federal representatives, state representatives, special state legislative, state Supreme Court, ballot measures, county mayor, and municipal government officials. It seems like a lot and one may even wonder what impact our vote has in guiding the direction of this country at a federal, state, and local level. Constituents must understand that they can influence political matters, and the more involved they are, the more power they wield. It all starts by casting your vote. According to Statista, voter turnout in this country for the past three general elections ranged between 56% and 61%, which is similar to voter turnout in Sunny Isles Beach. While this is a positive showing, it means about 40% of registered voters are not being heard. The percentage of people not voting is much higher for primary and special elections. One must note that voting matters because it puts pressure on candidates and elected officials, reminding them that the voter is ultimately in charge. The greater the number of voters, the greater the pressure. The more people who participate in the elections, the more they can influence policies and laws, hold elected officials accountable, decide how their tax dollars are spent, and foster civic engagement. Voting is not only our right but also our civic duty. It’s the most crucial element in maintaining our democratic process healthy. Please vote and be heard. For election information, key dates, and registration, please visit: https://www.sibfl.gov/Resident-Services/Elections - And: https://www.miamidade.gov/global/elections/home.page Thank you for voting! Fashion Icon Elie Tahari Honors Women In Combat With Star-Studded Runway Show Jewish Connection News Nov 20, 2025 On Thursday, November 6th, In Collaboration With St. Thomas University And Soiree Events, Fashion Icon Elie Tahari Unveiled His Latest Designs For The Elie Tahari Collection Runway Show. This Unprecedented Event Was Unlike Any Other He Has Done During His Illustrious Career Spanning More Than Five Decades. This Show Honored The Bravery And Contributions Of Real-Life Heroes, The Courageously Selfless Women Of The Israeli Defense Forces. Fourteen models, including St. Thomas University students, professional models and two IDF soldiers, strutted the catwalk in Elie Tahari couture designs. The show featured a blend of stylish and innovative fashion, reflecting Tahari's signature aesthetic and collection, with heartfelt tributes to women who have made significant sacrifices for their country. The event aimed to raise awareness for causes that support IDF veterans and their families, while also launching Tahari's newest initiative to help provide every woman with clothing and funds through every sale or donation made, highlighting the intersection of fashion and social responsibility. It brings together celebrities, fashion enthusiasts, and community leaders in a celebration of resilience and heroism, making it both a glamorous affair and a meaningful tribute. “Fashion has the power to inspire change and honor courage,” said Tahari. “Through this event, we celebrate women whose bravery reminds us that beauty is also strength.” “We live in an era where fashion brands can no longer depend solely on creativity; they are challenged to reflect and respond to the world’s social and moral climate,” said Tobi Rubinstein. “Faith and fashion together remind us that what we wear—and the brands we stand beside—express more than our personal style; they reveal our values. I’m honored to represent a brand like Elie Tahari, one that leads with integrity, purpose, and heart, standing firmly on the right side of history. The event beautifully captures the essence of my mission through The House of Faith & Fashion—to unite faith and fashion, purpose and beauty, into a single, powerful dialogue that uplifts, inspires, and connects us all.” About Elie Tahari Elie Tahari built a billion-dollar brand by making a name for himself in contemporary women’s clothing and upscale fashion. He is credited with popularizing the tube top. Tahari started reselling them, first at a low price and then by creating a display at a trade show that resulted in thousands of orders, essentially launching his wholesale business. His groundbreaking success with tube tops was the foundation for Tahari's career and the founding of his eponymous brand in the early 1970’s, becoming a hugely successful global designer, amassing more than 920 stores nationwide. He is also known for being in a class by himself in women’s suit designs, gaining widespread accolades for his sophisticated and classic styles. Tahari is also recognized for his innovative use of fabrics and keen attention to detail, which have helped establish his brand as a staple in women's fashion. The brand has expanded over the years, offering a range of products, including dresses, suits, and outerwear. In addition to the clothing line, Tahari has ventured into other areas of fashion and lifestyle. All of the proceeds from Tahari’s online sales are designated for the care and support of the female IDF soldiers. About Tobi Rubinstein Threads of Valor Co-Organizer & Host/The House of Faith & Fashion Founder Tobi Rubinstein began her esteemed career in fashion after being recruited by an exclusive manufacturer for Victoria’s Secret and JCPenney. She went on to partner with Nicole Miller and developed Crunch Gym’s activewear line. In 2001, Rubinstein and her partners launched Chedda, an innovative men’s urban hip-hop brand designed for Kmart—the first women-owned urban brand of its kind in the mass market. By 2009, she expanded her vision through The House of Faith & Fashion, a project that became both a reality TV series on NBC and a successful lecture and radio series. As a lifestyle, fashion, and faith commentator, Rubinstein has appeared on WABC, WNBC, Lifetime, i24, HuffPost, Page Six, and numerous other national and international media outlets. Her goal has always been to fuse spirituality with fashion and other creative industries, interviewing iconic figures such as Patricia Field, Badgley Mischka, and Jonathan Adler about the role of faith in their artistry. In 2014, she founded The Tahor Group, built on the belief that fashion must move beyond the traditional runway and onto more imaginative ground. Most recently, she created Haute and Holy, a fashion and talk series in partnership with Mana Fashion Services, which debuted during NYFW 2022. The series brought her acclaimed book to life through runway presentations and interfaith panel discussions on modesty across religions. This direction also inspired a workshop at St. Thomas University and led to several exciting new projects, including the debut of the TV series The House of Faith & Fashion—continuing her mission to merge spiritual purpose with creative expression. An Orthodox Jewish woman, Rubinstein’s journey deepened after becoming a Rebbitzen and later being ordained, following an in-depth study of Jewish thought and teachings. She is the author of the bestselling book The House of Faith & Fashion: What My Wardrobe Taught Me About G-d, which continues to inspire readers worldwide. Her follow-up book, Haute & Holy, along with her TEDx Talk and TV show, continues her mission to elevate creativity to divine heights. In recognition of her impact, Rubinstein received the Fashion Icon Award during Paris Fashion Week in 2025. Previous Next
- A Potential Ally Against Early Alzheimer's Disease | sun-times
A Potential Ally Against Early Alzheimer's Disease By BPT Jul 3, 2025 In The Relentless Battle Against Alzheimer's Disease, Researchers Are Looking Closely At A Lab-Made Version Of Thiamine (Also Known As Vitamin B1). This Nutrient, Crucial For Brain Function And Energy Production, Is Now In The Spotlight For Its Potential Role In Combating Cognitive Decline. Alzheimer's Disease is a progressive disease that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior that affects nearly seven million individuals in the U.S., and that number is expected to reach 13 million by 2050. The good news is the Alzheimer's Association says this is a time of great promise in Alzheimer's research with increased government and philanthropic funding and a growing community of scientists - all of which are instrumental to finding new treatments to stop, slow and prevent Alzheimer's Disease. Take Carole, wife and mother of two. "I have been living with Alzheimer's disease for three years and while the disease has taken its toll on me, it has really impacted my whole family. I was always the caretaker in our house, but my husband has had to step into that role now. He and my children have become my support system and I know it's not easy for them either. I am hopeful that researchers can discover more and better new treatments for people with the disease." New Research in the Fight Against Alzheimer's Disease In an effort to alleviate the burden of Alzheimer's Disease, researchers have long sought new ways to treat and prevent the devastating disease. Recently, their attention has turned to Thiamine, a nutrient with extraordinary potential. The brain tissue of people with Alzheimer's Disease shows that they have a Thiamine Deficiency, even though they may have a sufficient supply of Thiamine in their blood. This is likely due to a diminished ability to deliver Thiamine to their brain. A lack of Thiamine in the brain compromises memory and cognition. Scientists are cautiously optimistic that boosting Thiamine levels could hold the key to slowing the progression of Alzheimer's Disease. By significantly increasing the amount of Thiamine in the bloodstream, they hope to provide a much-needed boost to brain function and memory retention. Furthermore, they believe that Benfotiamine could work in combination with other existing treatments to offer additional benefits beyond what current therapies can achieve. While the idea of a readily available intervention that helps slow or stop Alzheimer's Disease cognitive decline is appealing, more research is needed to establish the link between Thiamine and Alzheimer's Disease. A new clinical trial, funded by the National Institute of Aging at the National Institutes of Health, is seeking to shed light on this potential connection. This trial will focus on Benfotiamine, a synthetic form of Thiamine specifically developed to enhance its absorption by the brain. For Carole, and countless others like her, this trial represents hope in the fight against Alzheimer's Disease. The possibility of a potential treatment is a ray of light in an otherwise difficult landscape. Impact of Alzheimer's on Different Populations Hispanic and Black communities bear a disproportionate burden of the disease. In fact, studies have shown that older Black Americans are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's compared to older non-Hispanic White Americans, while older Hispanic Americans are one and a half times more likely. In addition, there is growing scientific evidence that biomarkers of Alzheimer's Disease are not the same across populations.[5] In light of these disparities, it is imperative that research into potential treatments like Benfotiamine considers the diverse experiences of those affected by Alzheimer's Disease. "By including all populations in clinical trials to meet their specific needs, we can ensure that no one is left behind in the fight against this devastating disease," said José Alejandro Luchsinger, M.D., MPH, Vice-Chair for Clinical and Epidemiologic Research at Columbia University and a lead investigator in the Benfotiamine trial. Participating in the Benfotiamine Trial The Benfotiamine trial (BenfoTeam Trial) needs people of every race and ethnicity to participate in the study to help find a treatment for Alzheimer's Disease that works for all. The clinical trial is taking place in approximately 40 clinical trial sites across the U.S. and enrolling people who are: • Aged 50-89 • Experiencing mild memory concerns or previously diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment or mild Alzheimer's Disease • Positive Alzheimer's Disease blood test • Stable on current FDA-approved Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (with or without Memantine) for at least three months prior to screening • Living in the community (not in a long-term care nursing facility) • Willing to participate in the BenfoTeam study for up to 18 months (plus screening) To learn more about the study, visit: www.BenfoTeam.org . - ‘Gender Affirming’ What Does That Mean for A Child?
‘Gender Affirming’ What Does That Mean for A Child? By Jane M. Orient, M.D. September 1, 2022 Share The Biden Administration is planning to reinstate rules withdrawn by the Trump Administration that add Gender Identity to Nondiscrimination Protections. It would also expand requirements to include any providers who accept Medicare Part B. It’s not altogether clear what this will mean. There is no evidence that Transgender or Gender-Nonconforming Persons are failing to get Prenatal Care or delivery of babies, treatment for Heart Attacks, Gall Bladder Surgery, Trauma Care, or other types of care that all types of patients might need — though it is possible that some Caregivers might use the “wrong” pronouns. The issue seems to be “Gender-Affirming” Care. Physicians might be pressured to provide care they think is morally objectionable or harmful to a patient. This was the reason why the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) objected to the rule in the first place. But exactly what kind of care? Language is the tool we use for thinking and the meaning of words is critically important. “Affirming” sounds like a good thing, a positive thing. It’s replacing the term “sex change.” Unarguably, it is impossible to change the Biological Sex, to switch out the Y or the Second X Chromosome present in every cell of a person’s body. Also, advocates claim that people “know” themselves “really” to be of a Gender different from the one “assigned at birth,” so the Gender is essentially not being changed. Puberty confirms and exhibits Biologic Sex, but in Newspeak this is not called “affirming.” After going through natural Puberty, the vast majority of Gender-Confused Children accept the Biological Reality that their bodies constantly manifest. So, many Transgender Activists insist that “affirming” therapy must be started before Puberty, using a Puberty Blocker such as Lupron™ (Leuprolide). It works by stopping production of the Pituitary Hormones that tell the Testicles to make Testosterone or the Ovaries to make Estrogen. Its main approved use is in Cancer Chemotherapy. It is also used in Infertility treatments and to delay precocious Puberty. Using it to suppress normal Puberty is an unapproved, “off-label” use. Lupron has numerous severe adverse effects. It stops the maturation of Sex Cells and may result in Sterility. It stunts growth and reduces Bone Density, among other consequences. It is not a harmless on-off switch that can delay a child’s development to give the child time to “explore” Gender Identity. While it may prevent or diminish irreversible changes such as a deepening voice, it causes its own, probably irreversible changes in many bodily systems. The next step is Cross-Sex Hormones to “affirm” (cause), the development of some secondary Sex Characteristics of the Nonbiologic Gender, such as Facial Hair, Voice Changes and Breast Development. But Sex Hormones are not magic potions; many characteristics of the Biological Sex will persist despite years of therapy. The next and clearly irreversible step is Surgery. Surgery does not affirm body parts. Surgery merely removes functional organs and replaces them with non-functional imperfect replicas. For example, a skin-covered wound that requires constant dilatation to remain open will never have the functionality of Female Genitalia. Transgender Extremists may try to steer a child into this course, even without the knowledge or consent of a Parent. Female-to-Male Transgender people might enjoy showing off their “top surgery”—if they had extremely expensive Cosmetic Surgery. If they haven’t, they will not look like the models shown on the internet, but will simply have a flat, deeply scarred, female-sized chest. How many surgeons explain the possible Urinary problems? Some patients will have to spend 10 minutes emptying their Bladder and will constantly drip Urine. “Bottom Surgery” is complex, painful and fraught with complications, while its results are typically far from the wishful expectations. Are these interventions “affirming” – or denying? Biological Women are denied their prospects for Femininity. They can lose their smooth skin, their Breasts, their beautiful Soprano singing Voice and their ability to bear children. They are likely to permanently lose their attractiveness to men who desire a lifelong Female partner, wife and mother. Biological Men are denied their full height and strength, their Potency, Fertility and attractiveness to Women who desire a lifelong Male partner, protector and father to their children. Post “Transition” they will probably still have a distinctly Male Bone Structure and other typically coarser Male features. “Affirmative Treatment” negates the ability to experience intimacy in relationships in the way that normal Women or normal Men do. All patients will need lifelong Medical Care—continuous Hormones and management of adverse effects. But will the “Affirmed” people be happy with their identity and less likely to commit Suicide? We have very little long-term follow-up and for now well-funded Woke Activists are in control of Research, Treatment and are in a position to punish or cancel all Non-Affirming opinions. “Affirming” a delusion and denying reality can only lead to harm. This article has been published Online by the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons at: https://aapsonline.org/what-does-gender-affirming-mean-for-your-child/ Gender-Affirming Care, Defined According To The Department of Health & Human Services Office of Population Affairs Gender-Affirming Care is a supportive form of Healthcare. It consists of an array of services that may include: Medical, Surgical, Mental Health and Non-Medical Services for Transgender and Non-Binary people. For Transgender and Non-Binary Children and Adolescents, Early Gender-Affirming Care is crucial to overall health and well-being as it allows the child or adolescent to focus on social transitions and can increase their confidence while navigating the Healthcare System. GOT OCD - There's Help: Clinical Trial Is Recruiting People With Obsessive Compulsive Disorder August 3, 2023 Share In the world of Mental Health, there exists a silent, yet powerful force that affects millions of individuals around the globe. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is not simply an inclination towards neatness or organization; it is a complex and often debilitating condition that disrupts the lives of those who suffer from it. In this article, we delve into the intricate layers of OCD, exploring its manifestations, impact, and avenues for treatment. Understanding OCD Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is characterized by a relentless cycle of intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and compulsive behaviors. These obsessions, often distressing and intrusive, can range from fears of contamination, harm to loved ones, or even the fear of causing harm to oneself. In a desperate attempt to alleviate the anxiety triggered by these obsessions, individuals with OCD resort to compulsions, which are repetitive actions or mental rituals. These compulsions serve as temporary relief but eventually feed the cycle, reinforcing the disorder. Many misconceptions surround OCD, and it is essential to dispel these myths to better understand the disorder. OCD is not a mere quirk or an idiosyncrasy but a Clinically Diagnosed Mental Health Condition. Contrary to popular belief, OCD is not just about cleanliness or a desire for orderliness; it can manifest in various forms, affecting every aspect of an individual's life. Imagine being trapped in your own mind, unable to escape the relentless stream of distressing thoughts that hijack your consciousness. For those with OCD, this is an everyday reality. It's like walking on eggshells, where even the simplest of actions can set off a chain reaction of anxious thoughts and compulsive behaviors. Meet Sarah, a 32-year-old Marketing Professional, who has been battling OCD since her early teens. Sarah's obsessions revolve around the fear of contamination, causing her to spend hours each day washing her hands. This behavior not only consumes her time but also prevents her from engaging in activities she once loved. Social events become a dreaded ordeal, and her professional life suffers due to constant handwashing interruptions. The Weight Of Stigma The Stigma surrounding Mental Health is often a significant barrier for those with OCD seeking help. Due to the misconception that OCD is a mere personality quirk or exaggerated behavior, individuals may hesitate to share their struggles or fear of being judged. This Stigma can lead to Isolation, worsening the already challenging experience of living with OCD. It is essential to recognize that OCD is not a choice; it is a Medical Condition that requires understanding and empathy. Support from Friends, Family, and Mental Health Professionals can make a significant difference in the lives of those struggling with OCD. While OCD is undoubtedly a source of Immense Pain and distress for those affected, it is crucial to acknowledge that individuals with OCD often demonstrate incredible resilience and strength. Many go on to lead fulfilling lives, pursuing successful careers, and maintaining meaningful relationships. While living with OCD may seem like an insurmountable challenge, there is hope. Various treatment approaches, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Medication, have proven effective in Managing OCD Symptoms. There is even a Clinical Trial to Conduct New Research about the Disorder. Clinical Trial South Florida Research Phase I-IV, Inc. is actively recruiting people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) aged 18-65 for a New Clinical Research Study evaluating the Safety and Efficacy of an Investigational Treatment in adults. OCD is a Mental Health Disorder that affects one in 100 people and occurs when a person gets caught in a cycle of uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts and behaviors. This Multicenter, Placebo Controlled, Phase 3 Clinical Trial is studying Adjunctive Troriluzole to treat the symptoms of OCD by targeting Glutamate. Glutamate is a Chemical found in the Brain that is believed to be a contributing factor to OCD. “Alarmingly, it can take from 14 up to 17 years from the onset of symptoms for a person to get an appropriate Diagnosis and Effective Treatment for OCD,” said Silvia I. Silva-Duluc, Psychiatrist at South Florida ResearchPhase I-IV, Inc. and Investigator in the OCD Clinical Trial. “Unfortunately, one third of people with OCD do not respond to currently available Medications so new therapies are urgently needed. It’s been over two decades since the FDA-Approval of a new OCD Medication, which is why it is so important for people to participate in Clinical Trials. We are hopeful Troriluzole will help these individuals to better manage their Disorder and, in turn, have a better quality of life.” Clinicians at South Florida Research Phase I-IV, Inc. are now seeking eligible participants for the Study. To Enroll, participants must be between age 18 and 65, believe they have symptoms of OCD or have been diagnosed with OCD, and not be taking Fluvoxamine (Luvox). For more information about participating in the Study at South Florida Research Phase I-IV, Inc., call: (305) 418-0841. Or visit: www.ocdtrials.com Study Details The Study will Enroll approximately 2,000 participants between the ages of 18 and 65 who will receive Adjunctive Troriluzole or Placebo for the treatment of OCD. The Efficacy of Adjunctive Troriluzole compared to Placebo will be measured by the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale, a scale designed to rate the severity and type of symptoms in those with the Disorder. < Previous News Next News >
