May 24, 2024
Summer is a great time to catch up with old friends and you’ll find them this June at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts with a fun look back at Black American sitcoms, four bands that created the soundtrack of the '80s, a musical trip under the sea to Bikini Bottom scored by rock legends and everyone’s favorite board game brought to life in a Broadway blockbuster.
Movin' On Up With The Canon Collective
The New Canon Chamber Collective presents a fun, nostalgic and entertaining musical production Remember the Times Live celebrating theme songs from Black American sitcoms from the '70s, '80s and '90s in the Abdo New River Room at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, June 2 at 6:30 p.m.
This joyous, multidisciplinary production of music, theater, dance, poetry and film features a three-part digital documentary produced by opera vocalist and producer, James Binon. Also featured are Darius V. Daughtry, founder and artistic executive director of Art Prevails Project; vocalist JaNia Harden of The Harden Project; and Tanisha Cidel, co-founder and executive director of Evolutionary Arts Life Foundation.
Local music artists Waldron Dunkley II, Sarah Ruff and Jeremy Jordan composed original medley arrangements that will have audiences dancing and singing. Big Band Director for Broward College, Dunkley will serve as the musical director in addition to his creative contributions. Dunkley is a musical performer, talented arranger and multi-faceted instrumentalist whose repertoire includes jazz, reggae, soca, Junkanoo, orchestral and symphony works, r&b, soul and church gospel. The New Canon Chamber Collective’s mission is to shine a light on Black and Brown composers hidden in the shadows and create equitable pay opportunities for Black and Brown classical musicians in South Florida. The Collective’s Executive Director Portia Dunkley is a Miami native with Bahamian and Haitian Caribbean roots. A double bassist, Dunkley started Teeny Violini in 2017, a mobile music education program for preschools and after-school programs, providing music education services for historically underserved communities. That initiative is presented by Baptist Health and JM Family Enterprises, Inc.
Funding for Remember the Times Live is provided in part by the Miami Foundation and is presented as part of the Broward Center’s Arts Access Program, which assists community-based organizations in presenting arts and cultural performances at the Broward Center.
