"Can't Help Falling In Love" Start The New Year Off With Music Theater and Comedy

The first two weeks of January are action packed and more than two dozen productions take the stage this January as the Broward Center for the Performing Arts goes to the movies with one of the world’s leading astrophysicists, presents two Broadway tours, legendary comics, iconic musicians, celebrations of some of the greatest rock and roll bands and family theater. Here is the run down for the first two weeks of the New Year.

There is just one more chance to kick off your Sunday shoes and cut loose with Slow Burn Theatre Company’s production of Footloose -The Musical in the Amaturo Theater on Sunday, January 1st, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. The production which opened on December 17th at the Broward Center, is one of the most explosive movie musicals of all time and invites audiences to revel in this throwback to teen romance, angst and of course, the desire to dance! Rock out to the rhythm of the Oscar and Tony®-Nominated Top 40 score (the soundtrack album reached number one on the Billboard charts and has sold more than 15 million copies) elevated with dynamic new songs for the stage musical. Footloose - The Musical celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people and guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind. The 2022/2023 Slow Burn Theatre Season is presented by American National Bank. Tickets are $49-$65.

One of the most dynamic and determined bands continuously touring America since 1989, Donna the Buffalo comes to the Abdo New River Room on Wednesday, January 4th, 2023 at 8:00 p.m. Creating a community environment at their shows through their distinctive, groove-heavy and danceable music, Donna The Buffalo is a band for the people that is accessible, positive and memorable. With roots in old time fiddle music that evolved into a soulful electric American mix infused with elements of Cajun/ Zydeco, Rock, Folk, Reggae and Country, the band drew its original inspiration from a cherished part of the American heritage: the old-time music festivals of the south that drew entire towns and counties together. While simply fun to listen to, the group’s music often contains social and moral responsibility as core beliefs. Tickets are $35 when purchased in advance and $40 day of the show.

The Truist Comedy Series continues as the Broward Center and JS Touring presents Jerry Seinfeld, America's premier comedian, in the Au-Rene Theater on Friday, January 6th, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Seinfeld, hailed for his uncanny ability to joke about the little things in life that relate to audiences everywhere, will be performing his latest standup. He teamed up with fellow comedian Larry David to create what was to become the most successful comedy series in the history of television: Seinfeld. The show ran on NBC for nine seasons, winning numerous Emmy®, Golden Globe and People’s Choice Awards and was named the greatest television show of all time in 2009 by TV Guide and in 2012 was identified as the best sitcom ever in a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll. His latest Emmy nominated Netflix projects include Jerry Before Seinfeld and 23 Hours to Kill along with the highly acclaimed web series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. Hailed by the Associated Press as "one of the best songwriters of her generation," Grammy®-nominated singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier performs an intimate concert with special guest Jaimee Harris in the Abdo New River Room on Saturday, January 7th, 2023 at 8:00 p.m. Following her first nine albums of extraordinary confessional songs, deeply personal and profoundly emotional pieces, she has used her art once again to traverse the uncharted waters of the past few years. Amid dark storms of Pandemic loss, she found and followed the beacon of new love and her gift to us is her 11th album, the powerful Dark Enough to See the Stars, a collection of ten sparkling jewels of songcraft reflecting both love and loss. The album is a follow up to the profound antidote to trauma, Rifles & Rosary Beads, her 2018 collaborative work with wounded Iraq War Veterans which garnered a Grammy Nomination for Best Folk Album, as well as a nomination for Album of the Year by the Americana Music Association. Award-Winning Astrophysicist, Author and Host of FOX's Cosmos, Neil DeGrasse Tyson returns to the Au-Rene Theater with “An Astrophysicist Goes to the Movies II” on Monday, January 9th, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. In this entertaining and enlightening review, Dr. Tyson explores all the science that our favorite movies got wrong and some of the things they got right. This new edition is derived from an entirely different set of 30 films and incorporates the latest releases as well as some classics that you may not have known had any science in them at all, including: The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, Game Of Thrones, Harry Potter and The Lion King. Tickets are $45-$125 with $150 Spirit Club Level Tickets and $250 VIP Tickets that include a post-show Q&A and photos with Dr. Tyson.

Riverdance 25th Anniversary Show returns to the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts from Friday, January 13th, 2023 - Sunday, January 15th, 2023. Become immersed in the extraordinary power and grace of the music and dance, beloved by fans of all ages, in this performance. Fall in love with the magic of Riverdance all over again. The critically acclaimed 25th Anniversary North American Tour was shut down in March 2020 during a sold-out return engagement to New York City’s Radio City Music Hall due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. In 2021, Riverdance celebrated a return to the stage in the United Kingdom, where the iconic show played to sold out audiences in 27 cities across the country. Then followed its debut at Expo 2020 Dubai with a special production of Riverdance presenting a multi-cultural experience including artists from the Middle East region. A highlight of the four-week run was the Riverdance Performance at the USA Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai for their Thanksgiving Day Celebrations. The Truist Comedy Series Presents Pete Correale: Big Rock Show Hits in the Amaturo Theater on January 13th, 2023 at 8:30 p.m. Being married for over 20 years and a father to a young daughter, Correale is never at a loss for material. His conversational delivery and disarming regular New York guy attitude makes audiences feel like they're listening to the funniest guy at a party as opposed to just another comedian on a stage. He is co-host of the Pete And Sebastian Show Podcast with Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco and has filmed three one-hour television comedy specials and released two comedy albums. Audiences will know him from his numerous appearances on The Tonight Show and with Letterman and Conan. Tickets are $25 - $45.
