  • FPL Engineer Chases Gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics

FPL Engineer Chases Gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics August 1, 2024 Share Every day after work, Alonzo Russell trains for the Olympics at Joseph C. Carter Park. When he clocks out of his job as a service planner for Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), where he engineers and designs solutions for the community to receive power, he swaps his steel-toed boots for sprinting shoes – in pursuit of a gold medal. The two-time Olympic sprinter begins his daily four-hour workout at the park’s track, crouched at the starting block, with his fingertips delicately grazing the line where the red track and white line meet. Every muscle in his body is coiled like a spring ready to propel him forward. He mentally prepares like he does before every 400-meter race in the Olympic Games. “I just take a deep breath and walk through the race in my mind before it happens. So while I'm running the race, it's almost like I've already done it,” Russell explains. “As I'm in the blocks, I'm also just thinking about all the pain I'm about to endure.” Russell’s journey to the Olympics began in his homeland, the Bahamas, in the town of Hunter just southwest of the islands' largest city, Freeport City. His passion for running was sparked by his twin sister, Aloniqua, who was on a traveling track team. They would race each other in the backyard to pass the time, but it wasn’t until high school that Russell began training. He quickly became a standout track-and-field student-athlete, earning him scholarships to universities in the United States. His first Olympics representing the Bahamas, the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, was a rollercoaster of emotions marked by a bronze medal win in the 400-meter relay race after overcoming a disqualification from the 4x400 race. “I got disqualified for stepping out of my lane, so I kind of was down about that, but the next race was coming up a few days later,” he recalls. “I regrouped and got ready for the relay, and we ended up winning the bronze. It was a dream come true.” Upon returning home with a win, Russell began training for the next Olympic Games and enrolled in Florida State University (FSU). He decided to pursue a degree in electrical engineering— a subject he fell in love with in high school after studying electrical installation. He graduated in 2021, just before the Tokyo Olympics where he was a semifinalist in the 400-meter race. Russell’s return home also marked the beginning of his professional career as an electrical engineer for FPL. His commitment to excellence is apparent both on the track and at work, where he is part of a team that works every single day to provide reliable electricity to customers. For the past three years, as he resumed his Olympian training by night, by day, he helped plan large-scale developments and construction within his community, like the Broward Health Urgent Care and Baptist Health Hospital. Russell engineers and designs solutions to get customers power in a fast-growing state, and ensures these new facilities are equipped to receive electricity upon completion. < Previous News Next News >

  • Parenting In The Digital Age: Tips To Uphold Kids’ Mental Health

Parenting In The Digital Age: Tips To Uphold Kids’ Mental Health By Merilee Kern, MBA September 19, 2023 Share There has been much critical discourse about the escalating Children’s Mental Health Crisis relative to how benchmarks like Stress, Anxiety and loneliness are driving Depression and other serious Psychological conditions amongst youth populations like never before. Of course, children are not the only ones suffering, as parents and caregivers struggle to prevent, address and treat concerns in order to uphold kids’ Emotional Well-Being. In this process, the adults themselves are suffering in kind—often exacerbating their own Mental and Emotional struggles amid the copious complexities of modern life. This, of course, has a litany of macro-economic implications. As one case in point, a Morgan Stanley Alliance for Children's Mental Health research report : https://www.morganstanley.com/articles/childrens-mental-health-effect-on-parents cited that six in ten of those who are concerned say their Children’s Mental Health has impacted them negatively, with nearly half of those indicating it has affected their productivity at work. The report goes on to reveal that fully 48% of working parents who reported concern said their children’s mental health has impacted their performance at work in some way—including having to deal with disruptions and an inability to concentrate on the job. Some concerned working parents have considered reducing their working hours to support their child(ren) while others have even considered quitting their jobs altogether. Relative to the role Internet use, specifically, plays into the Children’s Mental Health Crisis, other reported research from the Child Mind Institute found approximately half of parents polled expressed concern over the impact of internet use on Cognitive, Social and Emotional Development, visit: https://www.morganstanley.com/articles/family-internet-use-survey “In today's digital age, parents are tasked with navigating an ever-evolving technology landscape to address and safeguard their kids’ Mental Health while also balancing work and parenting—an endeavor that has become a daunting—often seemingly impossible—task that’s ushered in an era of pressure-driven parenting,” says Neuropsychologist, American Mothers New York State “Mother of the Year” Award Recipient and Brilliant Minds Unite Founder, Dr. Jatali Bellanton—Author of Kidpreneurs and Founder of the Kids Who Bank Financial Literacy Program deployed in hundreds of elementary schools across the United States. “It is certainly possible for kids to thrive and deeply benefit from technological advancements. But, parents and caregivers must wholeheartedly commit to not just monitor such usage and activities, but also achieve and sustain healthy boundaries away from screens and buttons—both the kids and the adults. The key is to fill that tech downtime with activities that foster connectivity to, and a reverence for, ‘real world’ experiences. And, when technology is in use, to remain hyper observant and aware ensure it’s not impeding the child’s Mental Health in any way whether before, during or after. If red flags are present, however minor, it’s imperative to address them immediately.” Social Media has long been a culprit of compromising kids’ Mental Health. A new American Psychological Association Health Advisory on Social Media use in adolescence offers the following scientific evidence-based recommendations, visit: https://www.apa.org/topics/social-media-internet/health-advisory-adolescent-social-media-use 1. Youth using Social Media should be encouraged to use functions that create opportunities for social support, online companionship, and emotional intimacy that can promote healthy socialization. 2. Social Media use, functionality, and permissions/consenting should be tailored to youths’ developmental capabilities; designs created for adults may not be appropriate for children. 3. In early adolescence (i.e., typically 10–14 years), adult monitoring (i.e., ongoing review, discussion, and coaching around Social Media content) is advised for most youths’ Social Media use; autonomy may increase gradually as kids age and if they gain digital literacy skills. However, monitoring should be balanced with youths’ appropriate needs for privacy. 4. To reduce the risks of psychological harm, adolescents’ exposure to content on Social Media that depicts Illegal or Psychologically Maladaptive Behavior, including content that instructs or encourages youth to engage in Health-Risk Behaviors, such as Self-Harm (e.g., cutting, Suicide), harm to others, or those that encourage Eating-Disordered Behavior (e.g., restrictive eating, purging, excessive exercise) should be minimized, reported, and removed; moreover, technology should not drive users to this content. 5. To minimize psychological harm, adolescents’ exposure to “Cyberhate” including Online Discrimination, Prejudice, Hate, or Cyberbullying especially directed toward a marginalized group (e.g., Racial, Ethnic, Gender, Sexual, Religious, ability status) or toward an individual because of their identity or allyship with a marginalized group should be minimized. 6. Adolescents should be routinely screened for signs of “problematic Social Media use” that can impair their ability to engage in daily roles and routines, and may present risk for more serious Psychological harms over time. 7. The use of Social Media should be limited so as to not interfere with adolescents’ sleep and physical activity. 8. Adolescents should limit use of Social Media for social comparison, particularly around beauty- or appearance-related content. 9. Adolescents’ Social Media use should be preceded by training in Social Media Literacy to ensure that users have developed Psychologically-informed competencies and skills that will maximize the chances for balanced, safe, and meaningful Social Media use. 10. Substantial resources should be provided for continued scientific examination of the positive and negative effects of Social Media on adolescent development. Dr. Bellanton, also a technology futurist and leading Metaverse influencer, has some additional valuable insights into how parents can navigate this tricky, ever-changing terrain—especially for younger elementary-age children. 1. Ditch rigid schedules. While it's essential to have some structure in your child's daily routine, it's equally important to provide flexibility. Instead of imposing a strict, timed schedule on your child's educational or other activities, Dr. Bellanton recommends creating a more relaxed and flexible approach that fits around the parents’ work schedule. 2. Create Safe Folders for YouTube Videos and Shows that your child is allowed to watch. With the abundance of inappropriate content available on the internet, it can be challenging to monitor what your child is watching. However, by creating Special YouTube Folders and Streaming Media Playlists on Netflix, parents can control the content their children consume and avoid unnecessary worry. 3. Introduce your children to hobbies that require the use of different parts of the brain. Whether it's sculpting, painting, or physical activities that teach children how to utilize new tools, engaging in a hobby at least once every other day can help children develop new skills and foster creativity. 4. Creating a star chart system is another effective way to incentivize and reward children for doing things that do not involve digital devices. For instance, parents can reward their children for cleaning, reading, or playing outside, instead of spending time on screens. 5. Parents can also take advantage of the metaverse by teaching their children how to build and make money through playing video games. Children can be introduced to games that allow them to learn how to make money and build skills while playing. 6. Have conversations with children about online predators and to teach them to be cautious when playing games like Roblox. Parents should also pay attention to the music played in games, as some songs may contain inappropriate lyrics. 7. Put timers on devices to limit screen time. Parents can set a specific amount of time for their children to watch videos or play games on their devices, ensuring they have a healthy balance of screen time and other activities. Parenting in the digital age is a challenge that requires a multifaceted and highly concerted approach with tactical strategies that must be employed with intention and upheld with consistency. Doing so will allow families to embrace the litany of benefits the digital age affords and use them to derive emotional and lifestyle advantages versus impairments. < Previous News Next News >

  • Moskowitz Helps Lead Bipartisan Jewish American Security Act | sun-times

Moskowitz Helps Lead Bipartisan Jewish American Security Act Jewish Connection News Sep 10, 2026 Today, Congressman Jared Moskowitz (D-FL-23) Helped Lead The Introduction Of The Bipartisan Jewish American Security Act, Legislation To Strengthen Federal Efforts To Combat Antisemitism, Protect Jewish Students, Secure Jewish Institutions, And Address The Spread Of Antisemitic Content Online. The Legislation Is Sponsored By 30 Members Of Congress From Both Parties. The Jewish American Security Act would establish new protections for Jewish students on college campuses, strengthen security programs for synagogues and NonProfit organizations, improve federal tracking of antisemitic incidents, and increase transparency surrounding antisemitic content on large online platforms. “Antisemitism is on the rise across our country, and the federal government has a responsibility to help protect Jewish communities,” said Congressman Moskowitz. “When a man in my district made a plot against my life, I got lucky when authorities prevented it. But unfortunately, not everyone’s story ends the same way. The Jewish American Security Act will strengthen critical security programs for synagogues and NonProfit Organizations while also improving how we address antisemitism online. As more Jewish Americans continue to experience the effects of antisemitic hatred, Congress must act swiftly to pass this bipartisan legislation.” Florida is home to one of the largest Jewish populations in the United States, and Congressman Moskowitz has long understood the stakes firsthand. As Florida’s Director of Emergency Management, he oversaw Security Grant requests from places of worship across the state; and saw repeatedly that there was never enough funding to meet the needs of every institution that applied. The Jewish American Security Act is aimed at closing that gap, helping ensure more houses of worship have the resources they need to stay safe. Among other provisions, the Jewish American Security Act would: • Strengthen protections for Jewish students by requiring enhanced Title VI compliance efforts on college campuses and creating dedicated antisemitism coordinators to address incidents of discrimination. • Expand and reform the NonProfit Security Grant Program, authorizing $1 Billion annually to help protect synagogues, Jewish community centers, and other at-risk NonProfit Organizations. • Create new Grant opportunities to support local Law Enforcement efforts protecting houses of worship and vulnerable religious institutions. • Improve transparency and accountability surrounding antisemitic content online while strengthening federal efforts to understand the connection between online hate and real-world violence. Moskowitz is a senior member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, where he serves as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Oversight & Intelligence. He is also a member of the House-Knesset Parliamentary Group and has been a leading voice in Congress combating antisemitism and supporting Jewish communities at home and abroad. In the most recent election Moskowitz defeated 34-year old Oliver Larkin, who was endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America. Moskowitz won more than two thirds of the vote, the latest election results show. “Tonight, Democratic voters sent a clear message. I faced a challenge from the DSA. They threw everything at me and I didn’t change who I am or what I believe, and the voters overwhelmingly chose the independent-minded approach I’ve brought to Congress,” Moskowitz said in a statement. A video of Moskowitz discussing the new legislation can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/RepMoskowitz/videos/in-a-perfect-world-the-jewish-american-security-act-wouldnt-be-necessary-but-we-/1339858918122415/ For more information on the Jewish American Security Act, visit: https://d12t4t5x3vyizu.cloudfront.net/moskowitz.house.gov/uploads/2026/06/JASA.pdf . • Festival Future - Amid Chaos And Anxiety, 'Festival Of The Future' To Focus On Utopian Future; Bringing Calm To The Present | sun-times

Festival Future - Amid Chaos And Anxiety, 'Festival Of The Future' To Focus On Utopian Future; Bringing Calm To The Present By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil May 2, 2025 Amid An Atmosphere Of War, Sickness, And Global Financial Uncertainty, Local Chabad Rabbis Are Leading A Campaign To Raise Awareness Of A Little - Known Jewish Holiday, This Year Dubbed ‘Festival Of The Future,’ Focusing On Bringing A Message Of Hope For The Future And Serenity To The Present. The holiday of Passover — this year began at sundown on Saturday, April 12th, 2025 and ended on Sunday April 20th, 2025 — and its Seder nights are well known — and were observed throughout the great state of Florida with public Seders in almost every city and the distribution of Shmurah Matzah (the Rolls-Royce of matzah) — but the eighth and final day of Passover has its own focus: the utopian future of the Messianic era, when ‘nation shall not lift the sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.’ As the world reels from the devastating effects of conflict, Chabad rabbis throughout the state will lead their Jewish communities in celebrating the future era of peace. During this time of upheaval, it’s crucial that we find ways to bring peace of mind into our lives. On the last day of Passover, our focus shifts from the past redemption of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt to the future redemption and the utopian Messianic era. While we eagerly await this era of global friendship and peace, we can bring its lessons into our lives today. Synagogues everywhere will mark the day by reading the Haftorah and studying the Biblical vision of the Messianic Era, participate in interactive sessions guiding participants in finding ‘Oasis of Calm’ in the current climate. The last day of Passover ("Acharon Shel Pesach") is particularly associated with Moshiach and the future redemption. The Haftarah (reading from the Prophets) for this day is from Isaiah 11, which describes the promised future era of universal peace and divine perfection. Rabbi Yisrael Baal Shem Tov instituted the custom of partaking of a ‘Moshiach's meal’ on the afternoon of the last day of Passover; in addition to the matzah eaten at ‘Moshiach's meal,’ the Rebbes of Chabad added the custom of drinking four cups of wine, as in the seder held on Passover's first days. Local Chabad’s will cap off the day with Seudas Moshiach, a special holiday farewell meal. During this traditional and mystical feast scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday, April 20th, 2025, community members focused on bringing the Messianic message of harmony into their own lives. All are of course were welcome to join us at Chabad Chayil as we closed out the Passover holiday together, enjoying wine, matzah and other Passover goodies, discussing words of Torah with inspirational stories, singing Chassidic melodies and finding out why this day has a special energy related to the coming of Moshiach. There will be a Yizkor Memorial service that Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and the festive inspirational meal was at 6:30 p.m. While our world is still very much an imperfect place, if we look beneath the surface, we can see that we are already on the path towards a more perfect world. Yes, there is still war between nations — but it is condemned by the vast majority of the globe, as peace is valued now more than ever. Yes, there is still illness, but modern medical advances are bringing hope to millions. On the last day of Passover, we will focus on finding the goodness that is already in the world, bringing the serenity and calm of the utopian future for which we hope into our lives today. Faith Through The Lens Of Science - American Researcher Shares Simple Formula He Says Proves God’s Existence Jewish Connection News Jul 29, 2026 Award-Winning Scientist Nathanael-Israel Israel, Ph.D., Was Examining Facts And Figures On The Origins Of The Universe When He Uncovered “A Gold Mine Of Scientific Data Collected Over Centuries That Hadn’t Been Properly Analyzed.” His Interest Piqued, He Dove Deep Into Scientific Literature, Philosophical Texts And Religious Writings, And Became Increasingly Convinced That A Mathematical Bridge Between Science And Faith Was Possible. “For as long as human beings have looked to the stars and down at the words of scripture, two questions have circled each other like restless planets: Where did all of this come from, and does the answer leave room for God?” Dr. Israel said. His latest book, Boldest Scientific Formula of God and Creation, attempts to answer those questions through a simple mathematical formula that he says: • Cracks the universe’s origin at the crossroads of science and faith • Can scientifically demonstrate God’s existence • Proves that the Earth was formed in 2.82 days, the moon in 3.32 days and the sun in 3.69 days • Neutralizes the oil-and-water relationship between faith and science • Reveals a reconciliation of rationality and belief that will change lives forever • Equips children and their parents, whether scientists or nonscientists, with an easy-to-understand story of the universe’s origin. “The war between reason and religion was never necessary,” Dr. Israel added. “If you are looking for a scientifically verifiable cosmological theory that you can trust to prove the existence of God, then get Boldest Scientific Formula of God and Creation and see if it is not the scientific proof both scientists and nonscientists have been seeking.” Boldest Scientific Formula of God and Creation: Live Better by Quickly Mastering the Only Scientific Theory That Evolution, Big Bang, AI, and Some Religions Desperately Ache You Ignore Release date: April 24, 2026 ISBN-13: ‎978-1969961014 Available from: https://www.amazon.com/Boldest-Scientific-Formula-God-Creation/dp/1969961015 About The Author Nathanael-Israel Israel, Ph.D., is the Founder of Science180, where he helps people navigate difficult questions at the intersection of science and faith. Originally from Benin Republic, a French-speaking country on the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa, Israel completed his undergraduate degrees there, before relocating to the United States, where he earned his Ph.D. in Plant, Insect and Microbial Sciences. He claims to be the first person in history to scientifically demonstrate the perfect match between science and the Genesis narrative of creation and says he has the math to prove it without taking sides between science and religion. He is the author of more than 10 books, including Turbulent Origin of the Universe, Reconciling Science and Creation Accurately, From Science to Bible’s Conclusions, Turbulent Origin of Life, Turbulent Origin of Chemical Particles, and Mathematical Proof of God’s Existence at the Intersection of Science and Faith, among others. He maintains active memberships in multiple scientific associations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society, the American Mathematical Society, and the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. • Keller’s Korner - World Baseball Classic | sun-times

Keller’s Korner - World Baseball Classic By Neil Keller Apr 23, 2026 Welcome Back To Keller’s Korner. Another Thrilling World Baseball Classic Has Wrapped Up, With The Semi‑Finals And Finals Taking Place At Loan-depot Park In Miami. In A Dramatic Championship Game, Eugenio Suarez Delivered A Clutch RBI Double In The Top Of The Ninth To Lift Venezuela To A 3–2 Victory Over Team USA. A Lively Crowd Of 36,490 Watched The Action, Including A Two‑Run Homer From Bryce Harper. But as always in Keller’s Korner, I research the Jewish angle and must ask: How did the Jewish players perform at the 2026 WBC? Jewish Players Around the Tournament Team USA – Alex Bregman Alex Bregman of the Chicago Cubs represented Team USA but struggled at the plate, going 2‑for‑14 for a .143 average. Several other Jewish American Major Leaguers—including Max Fried of the New York Yankees—opted not to participate in this year’s tournament. Team Mexico – Rowdy Tellez Rowdy Tellez, whose mother is Jewish and father is of Mexican descent, played first base for Team Mexico. Now with the Atlanta Braves, Tellez finished the tournament hitting .111 (1‑for‑9) with two walks and two strikeouts. Team Israel: A Tournament to Be Proud Of Team Israel entered Pool D facing a gauntlet of powerhouse teams—Venezuela and the Dominican Republic—along with Nicaragua and the Netherlands. Despite having fewer Major Leaguers than their opponents, Israel exceeded expectations and finished third in the pool with a 2–2 record, securing automatic qualification for the 2030 WBC. Brad Ausmus, former All‑Star catcher and current New York Yankees bench coach, managed the squad. He told MLB.com that the team felt tremendous support throughout the tournament: “We see everything up on the scoreboard — people wearing Israeli T‑shirts or holding the Israeli flag. The hope is more players become interested in playing for Israel. Every time an Israeli team wins a baseball game in a big tournament like this, it helps.” Israel’s roster featured MLB players Dean Kremer, Harrison Bader, Spencer Horwitz, Garrett Stubbs, and Robert Stock, along with a strong supporting cast. Ausmus, Kevin Youkilis, Jason Marquis, and others brought invaluable Major League experience to the dugout. Game‑by‑Game Breakdown Game 1: Venezuela 11, Israel 3 Despite the loss, Israel produced memorable moments. Harrison Bader (SF Giants) launched a ninth‑inning home run. RJ Schreck (Toronto Blue Jays) added a solo shot in the sixth. Zach Levenson (St. Louis Cardinals) collected two hits. Game 2: Israel 5, Nicaragua 0 A dominant performance. Dean Kremer (Baltimore Orioles) threw over four scoreless innings to set the tone. Game 3: Dominican Republic 10, Israel 1 Israel fell to a stacked Dominican lineup. Spencer Horwitz (Pittsburgh Pirates) provided the lone run with a fourth‑inning home run. Game 4: Israel 6, Netherlands 2 Israel closed the tournament strong. Jake Gelof (LA Dodgers) drove in three runs. Matt Mervis (Washington Nationals) added two RBIs. Noah Mendlinger (St. Louis Cardinals) led the team with a .455 batting average. The roster featured 30 players: 17 pitchers, two catchers, six infielders, and five outfielders—including a rare brother duo, C.J. Stubbs (Toronto Blue Jays) and Garrett Stubbs (Philadelphia Phillies). Voices of Team Israel – Pre‑Tournament Reflections Ari Ackerman - Minority Owner, Miami Marlins “I’m here to help Team Israel. We’re working on a documentary—this will be the third one. I couldn’t be more excited.” Jake Gelof - LA Dodgers First WBC appearance. “I’m soaked. Super excited.” Adam Gladstone - Director of Baseball Operations Involved since 2012. “This is my third WBC and every time it is more exciting.” Noah Mendlinger - St. Louis Cardinals “Yes, I played in the last WBC. I love representing the flag.” Matt Mervis - Washington Nationals From Potomac, Maryland. “It’s an honor to play for Team Israel.” Barry Weinberg - Head Trainer With Team Israel since 2012. “It’s the greatest stage in the world.” Kevin Youkilis - Bench Coach “It is something special. There’s a lot of energy with our team.” Michael Hoffman - President & CEO, Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County “We are excited for them to be here, especially with what is going on in Israel now.” Randi Salko - COO in Boca Raton Inspired by her father’s love of the Brooklyn Dodgers. “This is my first Team Israel game. I feel very welcome. I love that they played both national anthems.” Final Thoughts Every player, coach, and fan I met radiated pride and passion for Team Israel. Their 2–2 finish, their resilience, and their spirit made this WBC a meaningful success. With continued growth and visibility, I expect Jewish players to make an even bigger impact at the 2030 World Baseball Classic. Neil Keller is a Jewish historian.
