Dr. Steve Fein: Founder of Fem Infusion Centers May 15, 2024 Share Iron Deficiency, A Growing Concern Among Women. Women have hematology concerns throughout life, including clotting, bleeding, and abnormal blood counts. Many experience weakness, headaches, dizziness and many more symptoms that affect their quality of life. In a recent article published by The New York Times on October 17, Alisha Gupta shed light on a concerning statistic: 35% of young women in the United States are grappling with low iron levels. Despite its prevalence, the issue often goes undetected due to a lack of awareness among women and their healthcare providers. According to the latest guidelines from the FIGO Ob/Gyn society, it is recommended that all women undergo iron testing "throughout their life," especially during pregnancies, to combat this pervasive problem. Since 2020, efforts have been underway to raise awareness about the seriousness of Iron Deficiency. The ramifications are substantial; women suffering from Iron Deficiency experience fatigue and cognitive impairment, while pregnant women face an increased risk of complications during childbirth. Moreover, babies born to mothers with Iron Deficiency are at risk of developmental issues, and the mothers themselves may experience Postpartum Depression. This issue also exacerbates gender and racial inequalities. Women are expected to have lower blood hemoglobin levels than men, affecting their ability to concentrate at work and potentially leading to more missed days. Furthermore, teenage girls with low iron may struggle academically, perpetuating educational disparities. Iron Deficiency disproportionately affects Hispanic and African American women and their infants, highlighting broader racial inequalities in healthcare. Traditional oral iron supplements often fall short in addressing Iron Deficiency due to poor absorption and insufficient iron content. Instead, iron infusions have emerged as a more effective and safer alternative, steadily gaining popularity among women and their healthcare providers. However, overcoming this public health challenge requires addressing various barriers, including the lack of awareness, understanding, and access to infusion centers. In response, the establishment of Fem Iron Infusions Centers in 2021 has aimed to bridge these gaps. By offering education, telemedicine consultations, and iron infusions, these centers have already made a significant impact, having administered 10,000 infusions and improved the lives of 5,000 women and their children. Their team is made up of experienced and knowledgeable infusion nurses, advanced practice providers, and physicians. They are passionate about helping their patients achieve their health goals, and are committed to providing the highest quality care and customer service. To tackle this epidemic collectively, it is imperative to encourage young women to undergo Ferritin testing for iron levels, either through their healthcare providers or dedicated facilities like Fem Iron Infusions. Together, let us confront this pressing issue. - THE BROADWAY BEAT GOES ON
THE BROADWAY BEAT GOES ON By Phyllis Green - Theater Critic March 21, 2024 Share It's like riding a bike! Once a dancer, always a dancer. And what an inspiration to watch 40 plus gorgeous, talented youngsters, ages 55 to 95, strut their stuff in "The New Florida Follies." Playing to a packed house at The Parker in Ft. Lauderdale, "The Broadway Beat" opened with a warm welcome from the Follies Director/Choreographer, Cheryl Steinthal, a striking lady, outlining the outstanding charities they support devoted to the well-being of children. And now, as she says, on with the show 'cause there's no biz like show biz! With an incredible bevy of beautiful babes, and a couple of good 'ole boys, it was a rare treat to watch as they tapped and traversed in and out of dazzling, glitzy headdresses, and short sequined costumes, some of which were created by the gals themselves. Conversely, there was "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" from "South Pacific," done in towels and headbands; to the umbrella routine from "Top Hat;" to the sexy black outfits with groovy gloves and garters from "Cabaret;" to the hip western shorts and cowboy hats from "Will Rogers Follies;" to a full stage vignette from "Into the Woods" to the very stylish blond and brunette coifs; down to the finest detail of proper dance foot-wear. All that with triads, synchronized lines and high kicks and the fastest costume changes and segues Flo Ziegfeld would ever have seen! These ladies, former Rockettes, showgirls and gypsies were the epitome of presentation, performance, and precision. And now, the cherry on the top of this delicious, sweet confection; the appearance of Guest Stars: M&M, Michael Kessler and Melinda Jackson. Equipped with the longest legs ever, the gorgeous, magnificent Melinda graced the stage as if floating in the air, while muscular hunk, Michael, sang and danced his unique style. Suggesting that even Gower and Bennet, and Fosse came to mind, Michael’s rendition of "Rich Man" from "Fiddler" by far exceeded any other choreography; and the famous character, Tevye could have used some of those endearing moves! With some cheeky jazz in "Razzle Dazzle" from "Chicago;" high kicks, top hats and reminiscent steps from "One" in "A Chorus Line;" this show- stopping duo shined with M&M's interpretation of Broadway musicals with unequaled panache. Melinda, on pointe, at the ballet barre, was joined by Michael, with the most exquisite patterns. They performed a highly sophisticated adaptation of "Do You Love Me" from "Fiddler," emotionally packed with those meaningful lyrics and amazing moves that captured the talent, heart and love this couple generates. Kudos to M&M; stars that brought a little Vegas to this already perfect show. In a flag filled finale, the company marched in formation with a salute to all the branches of the Armed Forces, America, and the Great White Way. A standing ovation proved the "The Broadway Beat" goes on and ON! last chance to catch this feel-good show on Sunday March 24 at 2 PM at the Countess de Hoernle Theater, Boca Raton. - Don't Worry About What Other People Think
Don't Worry About What Other People Think By Bryan Golden March 2, 2022 Share We grow up being taught to worry about what other people think. Are you concerned about what other people think about you and how you lead your life? Are your decisions influenced by the way you anticipate other people will see them? Are you worried about criticism? Does ridicule bother you? Why are you concerned about someone else's thoughts or opinions anyway? We grow up being taught to worry about what other people think. How many times did you hear, “What will the neighbors think?,” “What will your friends think,?” “What will the relatives think?,” or “What will people think?” in response to something you did or wanted to do? When you adjust your behavior to conform to what others think, you stifle your goals and restrict your happiness. Continually striving to meet someone else’s goals in place of your own, causes you endless frustration. Too many people structure their entire lives in response to their concern for the opinions of others. Where they live, who they marry, their occupation, and who they associate with, are just some of their decisions determined by what other people think. Why do we fall into this trap and what can we do about it? It starts with our craving for acceptance. As children we seek approval from our parents. Over time this need spreads to friends, relatives, and even strangers. Additionally, the hunger for acceptance is combined with seeking to avoid criticism, ridicule, and rejection. These are powerful emotions because they are based on the fear of “what if.” What if people make fun of me? What if I’m not included? What if people don’t invite me? What if people don’t approve of what I’m doing? The list is endless but the result is the same: conforming to what other people might think ultimately makes you unhappy. The irony is that even when you do what you think other people want, they either don’t care or aren’t satisfied anyway. So, after adjusting your life, nothing has changed except the fact that you are continually unhappy. So, in the end, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. Today is the day to break free in order to start living on your terms. You begin from where you are right now. There’s no point to lamenting any past decisions. Your objective is to avoid repeating past mistakes while moving forward. It doesn’t matter if you are criticized for taking control of your life. After all, attempting to avoid criticism didn’t work out too well. There is no obligation to explain why you are changing direction. You don’t have to convince anyone that this is the right course for you. Where you want to go from here is based on an honest assessment of yourself. What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? What do you like? What do you dislike? What are your goals? If you don’t know the answers to these questions, it’s essential that you take time to figure them out. Next, you need to formulate a step-by-step plan to get where you want to be. Each step must be small enough to be manageable. If one step seems too big, break it down into smaller sub-steps. Now it’s time for action. The formula for success is taking one step at a time. Don’t worry about what other people think. The direction of your life and your happiness is your responsibility. Setbacks are a normal part of goal attainment. Yet, this is the point at which you will be inundated with negative advice, criticism, and even ridicule. Ignore all of it. When you stumble, get up, dust yourself off, and resume your journey forward. You will be very pleasantly surprised by how much more joy you experience by not worrying about what others think. - How Do You Treat Waiters? | sun-times
How Do You Treat Waiters? By Bryan Golden Sep 17, 2025 The Way You Treat Others Offers A Window Into The Type Of Person You Are. Your Interaction With People, Whose Job It Is To Serve You, Reflects On Your Character And Offers A Glimpse Into The Way They Will React To You. When you behave in a condescending manner, you are sure to elicit a negative reaction. Immediately, the person you are talking down to will be put off, even if they don't show it. You will squelch any inclination for the other person to go out of their way to help you. At most, they will do no more than the bare minimum necessary to keep you mollified. Corporate CEOs like to observe how job candidates treat waiters. These corporate captains have found that how a prospective employee treats a waiter offers a clear picture of the type of person he or she is. Someone who is polite to you but discourteous to a waiter does not have desirable interpersonal skills. They tend to be abrasive, causing friction among coworkers and subordinates. Your treatment of waiters isn't just significant in business settings. A survey by a dating service discovered that being rude to waiters tops the list as the worst dining etiquette. It is a real turnoff to be in the company of someone who is mean spirited. Anyone can treat a waiter well when there are no mishaps or mess-ups. The real indication of a person's true nature is how they react when there are problems. What do they do when a waiter makes a mistake or their meal is not what they had hoped for? Do they get indignant, make a scene, and jump down the waiter's throat? Or are they gracious and magnanimous? No one likes to be berated when they make a mistake. Some waiters are better than others. Some are more conscientious. You can't manage their behavior, but you do control yours. If you can't handle a problem when you are eating out, how can you be depended on to handle life's real predicaments? People, who are rude to waiters, erroneously believe they are displaying power and authority. They mistakenly think their behavior will impress others. Anyone who attempts to elevate their status by stepping on others will ultimately fall flat on their face. People with integrity and character treat everyone with courtesy and respect, regardless of their occupation, financial, or social status. They don't view themselves as being above or below anyone else. The way you treat people determines to a large part how they treat you. Not everyone will respond to kindness and consideration. But everyone will react negatively to berating. Your best bet for bringing out the best in people is to treat them with respect. If you expect the worst from people, your attitude will project this and your low expectations will usually be met. If you anticipate the best, people tend to try to live up to those expectations so as not to disappoint you. People crave approval and recognition. If you start out rejecting someone, they will feel there is no chance to please you and won't even try. However, when you say please, thank you, and can you help me, others will make an extra effort to accommodate you. Treat waiters, and everyone you encounter, with dignity. In doing so, your relationships with people, even strangers, will improve. You will still find some individuals you just can't deal with. But they will be much more of an exception. You can never go wrong by treating another person well. Bryan is the author of "Dare to Live Without Limits." Contact Bryan at: Bryan@columnist.com . - Beach Renourishment Project: To Transform Hallandale Beach With Federal Support
Beach Renourishment Project: To Transform Hallandale Beach With Federal Support By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper November 17, 2023 Share On November 1st, Broward County began logistically staging Segment III Beach Renourishment here in our City. Associations along the east side of Ocean Drive received a letter from our City sharing the information and directing boards that no chairs will be allowed to be stored on our beach. Obviously we have all been anticipating this project, but notice could have been timelier and broader. Our City Staff is responsible for cleaning the beach, but the beach is actually under the jurisdiction of the state. Broward County is the lead agency in the agreement for renourishment and the coastal cities sign on to the agreement as partners. Hallandale Beach actually has to apply for a State Permit to do beach cleaning and to do anything on the beach. It is highly regulated due to Turtle Preservation. The biggest complaint has been the timing of the project. We have zero control over when the project begins. Turtle Season ends on November 15th that is why it is taking place at this time. The contractor was able to receive permission to begin early to stage the project. The good news is that the project will only take 3 months and the beach will remain open. Trucks will be coming to the South City Park and then travel down the beach to begin placing sand at the Broward/Dade County Line and work their way back to South City Park. Then they will remobilize and begin to sand fill from South Beach Park upwards to Hollywood. There will be flag people directing beach goers around the trucks. We are asking all residents to follow all directions of the contractors and their personnel to avoid any injuries. For more information about the Beach Renourishment Project and its impact on Hallandale Beach, visit: www.coHB.org/Beach There has been another issue along A1A, speeding. Over the past year, two individuals were struck by cars at the crosswalk at our South City Beach. One has recovered and one is now in a wheelchair. These tragedies led to a petition to call for a Red Light Camera. When I received the petition I was shocked as Red Light Cameras have been a lightning rod in cities around the state. To have the table turned and actually receive a request for one was a surprise. I believe in Public Safety Technology. The reality is we simply cannot have a police officer on every corner. Camera technology strategies are a way to have more eyes on the road and in our cities. I shared the concern with the Commission. A few made it clear that they do not like cameras but since there was a petition, it authorized me to work with Staff to research the possibility of placing one on the crosswalk. A1A is a state highway so my first call was to the District Secretary who informed me they do not allow cameras on their roadways. He did tell me he would look at the crosswalk to see what could improve it. Cities can place cameras on their right of way and in partnership with private property owners. Staff proceeded to work with one of the companies that installs cameras. It was found that cameras could be placed in our parking lot, and another would have to be placed on the private property of the Prince George Condominium. The company would not cover the installation nor the equipment as it was not a traditional intersection. The model is Ticket Revenues generated are meant to cover the costs. In this case, the City would have to pay the costs of $100,000 and then a minimum of $3,000 dollars a month for the service. Revenues over $3,000 would be shared with the City. Not the best news for the residents that support placing one at the crosswalk. I will continue to work with Staff and the Commission to look at how we can improve this and other crosswalks to improve safety. This will include requests for beefed up Police Enforcement, roadway improvements and or more signage. As we begin to prepare for our Holiday Season please remember to be safe! While driving put your phone away. If you must be on a call use your handsfree mode. There are effective Laws that you can be stopped and ticketed if you are driving distracted. Please feel free to contact me anytime with your questions, concerns and ideas to make our city a better place. I can be reached at: jcooper@cohb.org . Or: joycooper@aol.com . You can always call me at my Office Number: (954) 457-1318. Or Call/Text me on my Mobile Phone at: (954) 632-5700. Working for You! Always Have! Always Will! < Previous News Next News >
