Flexcation (Family Features) May 20, 2021 Share COVID-19 has challenged families in different ways, many had to cancel or reschedule trips during the Pandemic due to travel restrictions. COVID-19 has challenged families in different ways, many had to cancel or reschedule trips during the Pandemic due to travel restrictions, which meant missing out on quality time with loved ones, the mental health and self-care benefits of going on vacation. Although 61% of families had a trip canceled due to the Pandemic in 2020, travel is still top of mind as 82% of families already have travel plans in mind for 2021, according to the 2021 Vrbo Trend Report. The report, which includes vacation rental marketplace data as well as survey data from family travelers, it also revealed some travel habits that arose during the Pandemic, that are likely to remain popular, this year. "Let's face it, the Pandemic makes it tough to predict what travel will look like in 2021," said Melanie Fish, Vrbo's travel expert. "That's why we combined search and demand trends with a first-of-its-kind traveler survey of U.S. families. The combination gives us the most accurate picture possible of the plans that families are making." Consider these Pandemic-Era Trends, as you make your vacation plans moving forward: Staying in the Driver's Seat With travel restrictions and social distancing guidelines in place throughout much of 2020, many families opted to avoid flying and visiting crowded places by instead jumping in the car to hit the open road. This trend is likely to continue in 2021 with 59% of families saying that they are more likely to drive instead of fly on their next trip. A change of scenery can be refreshing and motivating after staring at the same four walls in your home, so consider taking a road trip and exploring a new destination, even if it's just down the road from home. Mixing Work and Play Many people were forced to adapt to working from home or facilitating e-learning for their children due to COVID-19. While turning homes into makeshift offices or classrooms wasn't an easy task for many families, the schedules and flexibility provided by the remote setup, allowed for the rise of the "flexcation" - mixing vacation time with virtual work and school. In fact, 1 in 3 families surveyed, said they were able to travel because they were working from home, 52% of those who took a flexcation during the Pandemic, found the experience to be refreshing with 67%, saying, that they would do it again. Another benefit of flexcations is experiencing amenities you may not have access to at home. Consider some of Vrbo's most sought-after amenities and vacation spots when planning your next getaway: * Splash in the sun in Cape Coral, Florida where 92% of vacation rentals have pools. * Cook over an open fire in Sevierville, Tennessee, where barbecue grills are included at 87% of vacation homes. * Cozy up by the fire with a book and some hot chocolate in Steamboat Springs, Colorado where fireplaces are an amenity offered in 87% of vacation rentals. Seeking Wide Open Spaces Many travelers gravitate toward vacationing in peaceful and picturesque destinations, the open sky, fresh air and scenic views may be even more appealing amid the Pandemic. According to the report, 61% of U.S. families said they are more likely to visit an outdoorsy destination over an urban one, 54% are more likely to head to a national park than an amusement park. • We All Have a Shared Role: Many Are Unaware of What Cities Can & Cannot Do To Address Flooding

We All Have a Shared Role: Many Are Unaware of What Cities Can & Cannot Do To Address Flooding By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper August 3, 2023 Share Over the past few weeks of rain everyone has flooded their minds. I have been following many chats on various Social Media Networks and many residents are frustrated and some are unaware of what cities can and cannot do to address flooding. We all have a shared role when it comes to Flooding and the government must work together with all stakeholders. Cities obviously can do a better job of managing Emergency Incidents. Shutting down many side roads is one that we can do better. Even when closed, there are still those knuckle heads that simply cannot get through their heads the damage they will do to their cars and worse someone’s home or business. Sitting in your home watching the water rise and praying the driver does not create a wake is horrible. If there is Flooding, stay home or pull off to safe higher ground and stay put. Hardening our communities against Floods is a shared responsibility. Governments can build Drainage Projects for Roadways and Government Assets. We do not have the ability to fix everyone’s home or condominium. Private property owners need to understand that they need to harden their homes. There are some Local, State, and National Programs that can assist, but it is still up to the owners. Many are putting in Shutters, Hurricane Windows and New Roofs. Residents need to know they can do more. There are also new technologies and products to help prevent Flood Water from coming into your homes and buildings. A while back we made that decision not to distribute Sandbags any longer. I was apprehensive about the decisions, so I did some research to reassure myself there were better alternatives. Currently online you can find an array of products. Now you can even buy Reusable Water Barriers of all types and sizes. These can be as low as 2 for $25 Dollars. This makes sense. Not only can they be reused, it cuts the time and Stress of waiting in line and then trying to carry two bags of sand to your home. There was always a limit of two per car. While there is a focus on homes many condominiums have had issues. Many residents are unaware that even though you do not always hear about it there are many condo parking lots that Flood into our community and along our beaches. Some of the ground floor units along 12th and other areas have been damaged. It was good to hear that FEMA came through and helped these unit owners. Along the beach it is a different issue. Many of our older buildings have issues with their parking lots. For many years these lots have been draining into the Ocean. In 2008, State Legislators passed a Law eliminating these Ocean Outfalls. The date to come in compliance is 2025. There were some changes to the Law, but all the Drains still need to come into compliance. The biggest offenders were the large Outfalls from Wastewater Plants. They were pumping Pretreated Wastewater right off our shore. Drainage Pipes from condos also put their runoff into the Ocean. Broward County regulates the removal of these Drains. All Condominiums that have Parking Lots or Property Drains that tie into the Ocean must now remove them and install Drainage Wells. The question becomes where in the property can these Wells be placed? Our City has four Beach Access Points plus North and South Beach. The Beach access between the condos is not owned by the City but was established by Right of Way ROW Agreements. They provide the ability for the City to Improve, Maintain and Utilize the areas. One condominium has already contracted to place their Well on Beach Access 4. We were unaware until recently that construction began since the County issued the Permit without the City being notified. The Walkway was closed, and the Well was to be completed by July 31st. As of August 1st, the Well was still not completed and our Parks Director is working with our Building Department to further understand the Construction Process and time frames. It is important to note that Beach Access 1 between Malaga and La Mer will also be shut down for the same type of work. Now that we are aware there will be better coordination and time frames. We know that this will be an inconvenience to our residents to access the Beach from the Westside of A1A. Currently we do have a FREE MiniBus that may be of help. The issue is just new, and I have already spoken to our City Manager about possible solutions particularly for our Handicapped and Senior beach goers. Until we have a better handle on how many Projects will need to take place and how long they will take we ask those impacted to be patient for further information. As always please feel free to contact me anytime with your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place! I am available at: jcooper@cohb.org . Or: joycooper@aol.com . You can reach me at my Office number: (954) 457-1318. Or Cell/Text at: (954) 632-5700. You can always visit my Facebook and follow me at Mayor Joy Cooper. < Previous News Next News >

  • Tel Aviv University’s Dr. Jeffrey M. Hausdorff Discusses His Mobility And Neurological Research | sun-times

Tel Aviv University’s Dr. Jeffrey M. Hausdorff Discusses His Mobility And Neurological Research By Linda Chase - Jewish Connection News Jan 7, 2025 For nearly 25 years, Dr. Jeffrey M. Hausdorff has been directing a research center that studies gait, cognition and mobility at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center. Hausdorff also serves as a professor in the Department of Physical Therapy in the Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences at Tel Aviv University. During our conversation, Professor Hausdorff shared details regarding his background and research. “After completing my formal education in biomedical engineering, I carried out postdoctoral training in aging at Harvard Medical School and carried out research for a number of years at the Margret & H.A. Rey Institute for Nonlinear Dynamics in Physiology and Medicine in Boston. Under the direction of Professor Ary Goldberger, at the Reylab, we investigated research questions, developed and applied innovative research tools based on nonlinear dynamics and fractal physiology. In 2000, I moved to Israel with my family and joined a clinical and research team in the Movement Disorders Unit (MDU) in the Department of Neurology at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center. MDU was led by Professor Nir Giladi and it focused on treating and improving the lives of people with Parkinson’s Disease. Professor Giladi and I shared interests in studying gait and patients with Parkinson’s Disease and Nir allowed me to set up my research lab as part of the MDU. A major advantage of this setup was that our research facility was actually integrated into the clinic. We aim to better understand the physiology of a healthy gait. We have also studied the relationship between genetic mutations associated with PD and their impact on gait in healthy people who have an increased risk of developing PD in the future (single neuron firing in patients undergoing surgery for deep brain stimulation.)” “Early studies of gait focused on biomechanics, muscle strength and movement of the joints,” Hausdorff continued. “One of the major insights we learned is that among older adults and many patients with neurological disease, like PD, biomechanics play a role, however, cognitive function is also critically important to safe ambulation and fall risk. We have spent much of the past two decades characterizing and fine-tuning our understanding of everyday walking where there are obstacles, surprises and many challenges that require many specific aspects of cognitive function. This led us to use brain imaging techniques like MRI (and functional MRI) as well as functional near infra-red spectroscopy (fNIRS) and EEG, allowing us to probe brain function during walking.” “The second broad goal of our research is to develop new tools and methods for quantifying gait and mobility,” Hausdorff continued. “This line of work has emerged as a very exciting field on its own with much interest from the FDA and many others. It has the potential to capture not just what a person can do when he or she is tested in a clinic, but also actual, daily living performance. While capacity is necessary for function, we have shown that there are large gaps between the two. Moreover, function may be more relevant to the patient than capacity. From a clinical trial and drug development perspective, many have suggested that long-term, continuous, 24/7 monitoring could save time and money, potentially shortening the time needed to test the value of a new therapy or drug.” Hausdorff shared his further studies on gait. “Gait speed and a closely related measure of step length, are two very powerful and sensitive measures of gait. Among older adults, gait speed predicts morbidity, mortality, disability, fall risk, cognitive decline and the development of Dementia. In the past, a biomechanical model of gait was used to estimate step length and gait speed from a sensor worn on the lower back during real-world, daily living studies. This was helpful and insightful, however, the model was not very accurate. With the help of a graduate student, Assaf Zadka, and Professor Neta Rabin, an expert in machine learning at TAU, we developed a new approach to estimating step length and gait speed from a wearable sensor. The machine learning approach is about four times more accurate than the biomechanical model.” “Another application of machine learning and wearable sensors was in our recent study of freezing of gait (FOG) among people with PD,” Hausdorff added. “FOG is a mysterious, disabling problem that affects many, but not all people with PD. When it happens, typically in an unpredictable manner, the person reports as if her feet are glued to the ground. This problem markedly impairs function, leads to falls, and, ultimately, confines the person to wheelchair use because of safety concerns. We have shown, for example, the key role of anxiety, depression and certain aspects of cognitive function in this problem. However, in the past, our investigations were limited to snapshot assessments in the clinic or home that do not fully reflect daily living FOG. Combining machine learning, with wearable sensor data, enabled us to quantify this problem in the daily living setting. We found (for the first time) time of day affects therapy treatment and prevention.” Hausdorff explained the therapeutic focus of his research. “Our third research direction is therapy, building on insights from our earlier studies. We aim to develop interventions that improve gait, reduce fall risk, and enhance cognitive function. For example, after learning that certain cognitive functions are crucial in safe walking, we tested cognitive-enhancing drugs like Ritalin and found promising results. We’ve also used non-invasive brain stimulation to explore brain-gait interactions with exciting findings that show the brain's ability to adapt positively, even with aging or neurological disease.” “Together with Dr. Brad Manor at Harvard Medical School, we recently received NIH funding to study the effects of six months of home-based, non-invasive brain stimulation on gait, cognitive function, and Dementia risk in older adults,” Hausdorff continued. “Additionally, with Professor Anat Mirelman, we developed a virtual reality approach that enhances traditional treadmill training. By immersing patients in a VR environment with motor and cognitive challenges, they can improve their walking and thinking skills subconsciously through fun, game-like tasks. In a multi-center, randomized study we led, this VR-based method reduced fall risk by 40% more than conventional treadmill walking. The technology was later transferred to a startup, GaitBetter, which is now used in many Israeli HMOs and gaining traction in the US. The (real-world) results have been even more impressive than in our studies. Patients and therapists are enthusiastic, and the system has significantly reduced falls and related costs. This ‘bench-to-bedside’ success has been deeply gratifying, highlighting the practical impact of our research on the health of older adults. We were also among the first to study the link between cognitive function and gait, which is now widely recognized. Our research shows that the ability to walk while performing another task can predict fall risk five years later.” When asked about the secret to his longevity, Hausdorff smiled. Previous Next

  • How to Find the Right Doctor

How to Find the Right Doctor (Family Features) March 17, 2022 Share Whether you're rarely sick or have conditions that require frequent visits to the doctor, having a trusted and skilled health care provider is an important step in protecting your health. Any number of reasons can result in needing to find a new doctor, such as moving to a new community, changes to your insurance, your old doctor retiring or needing a specialist. These suggestions from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) can help you be more efficient and thorough as you look for a doctor who is right for you. Ask for Recommendations Talk to people you know about whether they have a provider they like. If you're looking for a new provider because of a move or retirement, ask your current doctor for a recommendation. If you need to make a change with your primary care doctor but see specialists or other medical professionals you like and trust, you can also request referrals from them. Check with Your Insurance Company If you have health insurance, you may need to choose from a list of doctors in your plan's network. Some insurance plans may let you choose a doctor outside your network if you pay more of the cost. To find a doctor who takes your insurance, call your insurance company and ask for a list of doctors near you who are in-network or use the insurance company's website to search for a doctor. It's also a good idea to call the doctor's office and ask for confirmation they take your plan. You should have your insurance, Medicare or Medicaid card handy in case the office needs your plan details. Narrow Your Options Some of the providers you consider may not be viable options for simple reasons, like their practice isn't currently taking new patients or they don't have office hours matching your schedule. You can also consider questions such as hospital affiliations and whether other providers can help if you need emergency care and your doctor isn't available. Take a Deeper Look Online research can tell you a great deal about potential doctors, from biographical information and credentials to ratings by former patients. When searching for a new provider, another important area to consider is financial relationships. One resource patients can consider is Open Payments, a national disclosure program within CMS that provides visibility into financial relationships between drug and medical device companies and physicians, and teaching hospitals. The government requires pharmaceutical companies, device manufacturers and group purchasing organizations to report funds they give health care providers in the form of meals, entertainment, travel, gifts, consulting fees, research payments and more, promoting transparency and helping uncover potential conflicts of interest. It's important to know most health care providers receive payments. Just because financial ties are reported does not mean anyone has done anything wrong. However, patients can use the information to talk with their provider about why they recommend certain medications or treatments, including asking about generic options, which are equally as effective as name brands but typically less expensive. It's also an opportunity to start a discussion with a provider about areas of professional interest and expertise based on research or consulting. Listen to Your Gut If you're undecided, request an introductory appointment with a provider you're considering. Look for a clinic where you are treated with respect and the medical team listens to your opinions and concerns. You should feel comfortable asking questions, and the doctor needs to be able to explain things in ways you understand.
