- Knowing The Signs Of Stroke: If You See Certain Signs You Must Act F.A.S.T.
Knowing The Signs Of Stroke: If You See Certain Signs You Must Act F.A.S.T. By Family Features July 4, 2024 Share Stroke can happen to anyone - it happens to more than 800,000 people every year in the United States. Knowing the signs of Stroke and how to prevent it can help protect you or your loved ones from disabilities caused by Stroke. That's why the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of the National Institutes of Health, created the "Know Stroke" Campaign to disrupt Stroke and help people in your community who might be at risk of Stroke through prevention, treatment and research. "Seconds are critical when someone is having a Stroke," said Dr. Clinton Wright, Vascular Neurologist and Director of the Division of Clinical Research at NINDS. "It's important to know the signs." Know Stroke Most strokes happen when the brain stops getting the blood supply it needs to work properly. Without enough blood flow, the brain starts to lose function. Two million brain cells die every minute during Stroke, which is why Stroke Prevention is important. Preventing Stroke protects you from developing disabilities that Stroke may cause like speech problems, limited movement and memory loss. Know the Signs of Stroke Stroke symptoms often appear suddenly and can be easily missed. Treating Stroke by getting to a hospital quickly is critical to prevent Brain Damage. If you see these signs, act F.A.S.T.: • Face Drooping: One side of the face droops when smiling • Arm Weakness: If both arms are raised, one drifts down • Speech Difficulty: Slurred or strange speech • Time To Call 911: Do not drive yourself or your loved one - call an ambulance immediately if you notice one or more of these signs! Learning these Stroke symptoms can help disrupt Stroke before it disrupts your (or someone else's) life. Other signs to look for include sudden numbness, confusion, difficulty seeing, difficulty walking and severe headache, especially one that occurs in a split second, called a thunder-clap headache. Remember Stroke is always an emergency that requires fast action and medical treatment. Know How To Prevent Stroke Some medical conditions and lifestyle considerations can put you at higher risk for Stroke. For example, High Blood Pressure is the leading cause of Stroke. Stroke can be prevented by effectively treating High Blood Pressure as well as High Cholesterol, Heart Disease, Diabetes, Smoking and Obesity. There are several ways to lower your risk for Stroke: • Treat High Blood Pressure • Exercise regularly • Eat healthy and maintain a healthy weight • Manage Diabetes • Quit smoking • Control Cholesterol Doing your best to prevent Stroke from happening is the Number 1 way to lower your risk of disabilities caused by Stroke. Even if you have had a Stroke before, you can still take steps to reduce your risk of more Strokes. Treating these risk factors may also reduce the chance of developing Age-Related Dementia. For more information on the connection between stroke risk factors and dementia, visit: http://mindyourrisks.nih.gov . Know How To Recover From Stroke As much as prevention helps lower the chances of having a Stroke, it can still happen. Rehabilitation Therapy is usually started in the hospital within 48 hours after a Stroke. Health care workers help Stroke patients relearn skills that were lost from the Stroke or teach them new ways to compensate for remaining disabilities. Researchers continue to investigate how patients can restore blood flow to the brain and how to protect brain cells after Stroke to improve recovery. Know More When you know the signs of Stroke, you can help prevent a life-changing disability for yourself or someone you care about. You could even save a life. - "A Whoville Holiday": The 67th Annual Candy Cane Parade on Hollywood Beach
"A Whoville Holiday": The 67th Annual Candy Cane Parade on Hollywood Beach November 29, 2023 Share In the heart of Hollywood, Florida, a vibrant celebration continues to enchant locals and visitors alike—welcome to the 67th Annual Hollywood Beach Candy Cane Parade. This cherished event, steeped in history and festivity, is a testament to the community spirit that has flourished since its inception in the mid-1950’s. A jubilant extravaganza set against the backdrop of the picturesque Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, the parade promises an evening of joy, wonder, and holiday magic for all who attend. What began as a creative initiative by a group of enterprising Hollywood merchants has blossomed into one of the longest-standing holiday parades in the nation. The inaugural parade was conceived as a clever strategy to entice patrons to peruse the local shops and businesses. Over the decades, this simple yet ingenious idea has grown into a beloved tradition, captivating audiences with its array of brilliantly illuminated floats and vehicles. Scheduled to commence at 7:00 p.m., the Candy Cane Parade is a dazzling spectacle that winds its way along the iconic Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, embarking from Missouri Street and meandering southward to Harrison Street. Anticipation runs high as spectators eagerly gather along the parade route, eager to witness the mesmerizing procession of lighted floats, spirited marching bands, and captivating displays presented by civic, non-profit, and children's groups. For those seeking optimal viewing, the Hollywood Beach Theatre at Johnson Street offers complimentary seating, while guests are encouraged to bring along their own lawn chairs for added comfort and prime parade viewing. Alternatively, reserving a table at one of the charming seaside restaurants promises a delightful vantage point to revel in the festivities. Parking on the barrier island can be challenging during such a popular event. To alleviate congestion, parade-goers are urged to park in the Downtown Parking Garages starting at 5:00 p.m. Conveniently located at 19th Avenue at Polk Street and 20th Avenue at Van Buren Street, these garages offer FREE Patron Shuttles to transport attendees to the beach. Shuttles will operate continuously until the evening's conclusion at 10:00 p.m., following which the final shuttle will depart the beach area. In an admirable effort to preserve the beauty of Hollywood, parade participants have been encouraged to contribute to the city's environmental initiatives by distributing candy directly to onlookers, rather than tossing it from floats. This thoughtful approach aims to minimize waste along the Broadwalk and sandy shores. Additionally, parade-goers can play their part by bringing reusable water bottles, furthering the community's commitment to sustainability. A collaborative effort between the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency and the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts, the Candy Cane Parade epitomizes the city's dedication to fostering joyous communal experiences. For those seeking more information about this signature holiday event, the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts can be reached at: (954) 921-3404. As the 67th Annual Hollywood Beach Candy Cane Parade approaches, the excitement and anticipation reverberate throughout the community. It's a time-honored tradition that brings together residents and visitors, uniting them in the spirit of merriment and spreading cheer that illuminates the season.
